A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PASTOR
As we have celebrated the Feast of Christmas, we continue to reflect on the many ways that
we experience Christ's presence in our lives and in our world. We must never lose sight of the great
gift that Jesus is to us. We have experienced a God who comes to save us. Christmas can only have
meaning when we make Christ the center of our lives and recognize that his birth has changed our
lives forever. The Messiah brings hope to all people. We have hope that sin and darkness are not the
final word. We have hope in the promise of salvation.
The gift of Jesus shows us how much God loves us and cares for us. The Christ Child who came
2000 years ago never stops coming to us in our daily lives. He walks with us always and leads us to
the Father. He gives us the strength we need to face any challenges that come our way.
May the newborn Savior fill each of us with deep peace and everlasting joy!
In Christ,
Msgr. Emery

Everyday Evangelizing for Everyday
Catholics:
Earlier this month we celebrated the Feast of
the Immaculate Conception. In this we
see Mary's brave acceptance of our Lord's call
to become the mother of Jesus his son. We
hear her words, " Behold the handmaid of the
Lord, be it done to me according to thy word".
Oh, how wonderful if we could respond like
this to another Divine command, "Go and make
Disciples".
CYO Basketball Food Drive

RE-GIFTING PROJECT FOR THOSE IN
NEED
This year Our Lady of Sorrows will again be
participating in a Re-Gifting Project. Few of us
"need" all of the gifts we receive at Christmas,
and sometimes we receive gifts we do not want
or can't use. But instead of rushing back to the
store right after Christmas to return or
exchange these gifts, or letting them gather
dust on a shelf, why not share our Christmas
joy by giving to others what we do not want to
keep? This is an opportunity to give to those in
need at a time when many are struggling
during these challenging economic times, and
it is a great lesson for adults and children alike
to look at all of the gifts they have received and
offer one to someone who may have none at
all.
Your donated gifts may be brought to
church at all of the Masses this weekend and
next weekend (January 3/4). Please place the
gifts in the church vestibule (where the
presents for the Giving Tree were placed).
There is no need to wrap the items. The
collected gifts will be distributed among various
social service agencies who will want to be
able to see the items before they are
distributed. Volunteers are needed to help with
packing up and transporting the items to St.
Mary's at Newark Abbey next Sunday, January
4. To volunteer to help pack or transport the
items, or if you have any questions, please
contact Anna Nelson at: 973-378-3136 or
[email protected].
The Scholarship Fund for Inner-City
Children – which provides partial tuition
scholarships for low income students in grades
K to 12 to attend Catholic schools – will hold its
12th annual High School Basketball Festival on
January 2 and 4, 2015 at Kean University in
Union. The teams playing include; Saint
Anthony HS, Roselle Catholic, Hudson
Catholic, Seton Hall Prep, Mt. St. Dominic, St.
Benedict’s Prep, Marist, Union Catholic, St
Dominic’s Academy, Paramus Catholic, St.
Joseph’s Regional and Marist. For complete
game schedule, times and information on
ordering tickets, please visit
www.sfichoops.com or call (973) 497-4279.
Sponsor Certificates
A reminder that in order to receive a sponsor
certificate for baptism or confirmation you must be
registered in the parish for a minimum of six
months. Sponsor Certificates state that the
individual is a registered member of our parish and
is a Catholic in good standing.

Reflections on the Catechism Family
2206 The relationships within the family bring an
affinity of feelings, affections and interests, arising
above all from the members’ respect for one
another. The family is a privileged community
called to achieve a “sharing of thought and common
deliberation by the spouses as well as their eager
cooperation as parents in the children’s upbringing.”
2207 The family is the original cell of social life.
It is the natural society in which husband and wife
are called to give themselves in love and in the gift
of life. Authority, stability, and a life of
relationships within the family constitute the
foundations for freedom, security, and fraternity
within society. The family is the community in
which, from childhood, one can learn moral values,
begin to honor God, and make good use of freedom.
Family life is an initiation into life in society.

My Catholic Faith? There’s an APP for that!
Did you ever wonder:
How can I find out more about my Catholic
faith?* How do I pray the Rosary? * How can I
grow in my faith? * Where I can meet likeminded Catholics? * What is a disciple of Jesus
Christ – am I one? * What is the Pope saying
today? Check out the free new mobile app
“Newark Evangelization” at your App Store.
This free app found on the App Store at
“Newark Evangelization” will be the resource
in the palm of your hand which will allow you
to answer these questions and many more. It
will be a fountain of information and
inspiration for anyone interested in the
Catholic faith. The site also offers helpful
information to inquiring non-Catholics or
inactive Catholics.
Electronic Parish Giving
Please consider making your offerings to our parish
through our "Electronic Funds Transfer". This
allows parishioners to make weekly/monthly
donations to the parish that will be taken directly
from your bank account or credit card account once
a month. Electronic Parish Giving is easy and
convenient with no additional cost to you as you
support your parish. It can be accessed through our
parish web site (www.olschurch.com). You may
still receive envelopes in the mail and if you wish
you could turn them into the collection on Sunday
and simply write "Parish Giving" on them. Please
consider enrolling today as a way to enhance your
personal stewardship to our parish. If you begin to
use Electronic Giving and do not wish to receive
envelopes (which will save the parish money)
please contact the parish office. Please know that
it may take a month or two for the envelopes to
stop coming.
Support groups for Parents Grieving the
