FEAST and CELEBRATIONS
The Octave of Christmas - From the Latin word, Octava, comes the ancient practice
of celebrating Christmas for eight wonderful days. We would like to invite you to join our parish
in allowing Christmas its proper observance - by continuing the celebration for eight days. We
are celebrating the Word made Flesh! Can we properly celebrate this unfathomable mystery in
just one morning? By observing the Octave, we hope to “re-order” our Christmas observance,
quite frankly, away from the modern American practice of celebrating Christmas during December
(when the Church observes Advent) while disregarding the Christmas Season. By December 26,
the candles are snuffed, the weight has been gained, and we cast a forlorn look toward spring as
so many are burned-out on reindeer, elves and candy canes.
Assist your family in their return to the ancient practices of this worthwhile observance and
root them more firmly in the Christian tradition. Respect is due to the practices you and your family
have developed at home. The traditions you have developed are not, in some way, incorrect. Yet,
adopting some of these practices suggested below will unite your family to the traditions and
customs observed for centuries by our Catholic ancestors.
Why celebrate for eight days? The practice actually is as ancient as the Old Testament.
The Hebrew people observed many of their feasts for a period of eight days. The “Feast of
Tabernacles” and the “Dedication of the Temple” are two of the more notable. Later, the Roman
Emperor Constantine continued the tradition by celebrating the dedication of basilicas in the
Christian World for the same period of eight days. Prior to the Second Vatican Council, which
closed in 1965, the Church granted certain feasts the dignity of an octave. In addition to the more
prominent liturgical observations of Easter, Pentecost, Epiphany, the feasts of Sts. Peter and St.
Paul, St. Lawrence, and St. Agnes were observed. Today we celebrate two feasts with Octaves:
Easter (being the more prominent) and Christmas.
Again, so why celebrate for eight days? Life in the ancient world was so hectic and filled with
pressure and families had grown apart and were being swept up in the older pagan traditions,
the Church granted a period of eight days in order to contemplate the mysteries experienced in
the Church’s liturgy. Comparatively speaking, we obviously need the Octave even more than
the Christians of the ancient world! The ancient world did not have television, shopping malls,
internet, cell phones, fast food, automobiles, magazines and newspapers… if the Ancients were
busily distracted, what has become of us!? We need to enjoy this time! If you need, take off
work, visit family, feast, attend Mass, praise God, visit the poor, celebrate charity, and most of all
be humbled before the Mystery: The Word of God has become man!
January 1 - Mary, the Holy Mother of God (a holy day of obligation)
On New Year’s Day, the octave day of Christmas, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the
Holy Mother of God, the divine and virginal motherhood of the Blessed Virgin.
It is the highest title of the Blessed Virgin Mary: Theotokos, Mother of God. This title was
given to Mary at the Council of Ephesus in 431 A.D. The council taught, however, that the
humanity and divinity of Jesus could not be separated and that they exist in one person, with the
momentous implication that we can rightly give Mary the title of Mother of God. Mothers bring
life, a gift from God, into the world. That’s why you sometimes hear the Church referred to as
“Mother”. The Evangelist, Luke, describes her as the silent Virgin who listens constantly to the
Eternal Word, who lives in the Word of God.
This feast is the celebration of Mary’s motherhood of Jesus and is the oldest feast of Mary
celebrated by the Catholic Church. Mary has an important role to play in the Incarnation of the
Second Person of the Blessed Trinity. She consents to God’s invitation conveyed by the angel.
(Luke 1:26-38).
Elizabeth proclaims: “Most blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your
womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For at
the moemtn the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.
Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.”
And Mary said: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God, my Savior.

The Feast of the Epiphany of Our Lord Jesus Christ is one of the oldest Christian feasts, though,
throughout the centuries, it has celebrated a variety of things. Epiphany comes from a Greek verb
meaning “to reveal,” and all of the various events celebrated by the Feast of the Epiphany are
revelations of Christ to man.
In many parts of Europe, the celebration of Epiphany is at least as important as the celebration
of Christmas. In Italy and other Mediterranean countries, Christians exchange gifts on Epiphany—
the day on which the Wise Men brought their gifts to the Christ Child—while in Northern Europe,
it’s not unusual to give gifts on both Christmas and Epiphany (often with smaller gifts on each of
the twelve days of Christmas in between).

Growing in Faith
Dear Padre!
How do I teach my children about the works of mercy?
I’ve been trying to teach my children about the corporal and spiritual
works of mercy. Any suggestions?
It’s easy to teach young children about the works of mercy as long as
you keep it simple and call their attention to what they’re doing.
When they set the table and pour drinks, tell them they’re feeding the
hungry and giving drink to the thirsty. When they bring homework to a sick
classmate, they’re visiting the sick. If they go to a funeral, they’re helping
bury the dead.
When they make up with their siblings after a fight, they bear wrongs
patiently and forgive all injuries. Siblings who help each other with their
homework are instructing the “ignorant.” Children who soothe someone
who’s been hurt comfort the sorrowful. Praying for anyone, living or dead,
is a spiritual work of mercy. Listening when someone confides in them is
counseling the doubtful. Talking a friend or sibling out of doing something
wrong is admonishing the sinner.
As your children get older, volunteer as a family with organizations that
build homes for low-income families and help the children of prisoners.
Performing the corporal and spiritual works of mercy, whether for each
other or with each other, will bring you closer as a family as well as closer
to God.

How long does the Christmas season last?
The Church’s real Christmas season starts on Christmas Day and lasts
until the Baptism of Our Lord. By celebrating the whole season, you can make
your Christmas joy last long after you’ve taken down the tree. Here are some
highlights of the season:
Feast of the Holy Family, December 28 - Gather for a special meal with
family or make contact with out-of-town relatives.
Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, January 1 - Dedicate a special rosary
to the Blessed Mother asking her to help you grow in love and trust.
The Epiphany, January 4 - The example of the Magi honoring Jesus has
become a symbol of sharing him with the world. This is our chance to think
about the way we live so that we can better reveal Christ to our world.
The Baptism of Our Lord, January 11 - Baptism is our entry into the
Kingdom. Take time this day to renew your Baptismal vows and decide what
you can change in your life to help you live as Christ did.

When we were married, my husband
and I gradually worked out and grew in our
relationship. Four of the characteristics St. Paul
mentions in today’s reading from Colossians
were particularly helpful for us: patience,
forgiveness, love, and gratitude. They helped
us overcome the challenges of building a life
together, and each of our children gave us
ample opportunity to practice them over and over again.
By God’s grace and with hard work, we’ve been together more than
thirty years. Sometimes I think, “How did we do it?” We did it together,
and we did it with God, and I’m so grateful for my husband and for two
wonderful daughters who come back home at Christmas and call just to
say hello. So it makes sense that we dedicate one Sunday to the Holy
Family.
We don’t know a lot about Jesus’ childhood, but today’s gospel tells
us that, as unusual as the circumstances were, Mary and Joseph worked
with each other and with God to do the right thing for Jesus. They followed
the prescribed law, they listened carefully to the prophecies and rejoicing
of Anna and Simeon, and they raised God’s Son to adulthood—when he
showed the world who he was.
Even after that, Mary was with him, loving and grieving for him even at
the end. What parent would have done less?
The Holy Family undoubtedly practiced love, patience, forgiveness, and
gratitude with one another, even as the Lord taught us to do. We honor them
by doing the same.

Christmas is our Epiphany
“Epiphany” is defined as a sudden revelation or insight. The celebration
we call “The Epiphany” commemorates the moment when three foreign kings
visited the newborn Jesus and experienced the revelation that he was a divine
king.
The visit of the Magi was prophesied in the Old Testament. “The kings
of Tarshish and the Isles shall offer gifts, the kings of Arabia and Seba shall
bring tribute. All kings shall pay him homage, all nations shall serve him”
(Psalm 72:10-11). “Caravans of camels shall fill you, dromedaries from Midian
and Ephah; all from Sheba shall come bearing gold and frankincense, and
proclaiming the praises of the Lord” (Isaiah 60:6). St. Matthew recorded that
they brought three gifts: gold - the gift for a king, frankincense - the gift for a
priest, and myrrh - a burial ointment.
The kings witnessed to the presence of the Messiah on Earth, and the
fulfillment of God’s promise of a Savior. Christmas is our reminder that God is
always faithful.
Christmas is our epiphany into God’s eternal love.

uninsured/underinsured and who meet eligibility criterion. This includes
assistance with prescriptions, dental services, physician visits, and other
