2009 MINNESOTA VIKINGS
MAN OF THE YEAR
Dear Minnesotans,
For Minnesota Vikings fans and the entire Vikings organization, 2009 was a year to remember and was
highlighted by one of the most exciting seasons in franchise history. With a 12-4 regular season record, our
2nd consecutive NFC North Division title and an appearance in the NFC Championship Game, we believe the
Vikings took another step toward the ultimate goal of becoming a championship-caliber team built for longterm success.
As excited as we are about the on-field success, please know that our goal of creating a championship
organization in Minnesota transcends the boundaries of a football field and extends into the community.
Austin, MN
Philanthropy and commitment to community are core values of our family and the Vikings organization. We
are passionate about combining our desire to make a difference in people’s lives with the Vikings rich history
of civic involvement. Our players, coaches and staff volunteer their time each year to make a difference in the
Minnesota community and that is a source of pride and inspiration for our ownership group.
In addition to donating our time, the Vikings give generously to many charitable causes. Our devotion to
giving continued this past year in several forms, such as the Minnesota Vikings Summer Lunch program,
NFL Play 60, numerous children’s hospital visits and many other initiatives.
Another vital component of our commitment to community is the Vikings Children’s Fund (VCF), the charitable
arm of the organization for players, coaches, cheerleaders, staff and their families. The VCF allows the entire
Vikings organization and our supporters to focus their support to help children. Since its inception in 1978,
the VCF has raised more than $9 million and has donated more than $5 million to the University of Minnesota
Department of Pediatrics.
As dedicated members of the Minnesota community, we pledge to continue to use our influence to make a
strong and direct impact in this great state. Building an NFL roster is an endless endeavor, and so too are our
efforts to make a positive impact on the quality of life in our community.
Marshall, MN
Please enjoy reading about the wonderful ways the Minnesota Vikings have touched our community this past
year. Thank you for your support!

ALS Association of Minnesota
Prior to the Chicago Bears game, Vikings owners Lenny Wilf, Mark Wilf and Zygi Wilf (L to R) presented ALS Association of
Minnesota Executive Director Sue Spalding with a check for $10,000. The disease has impacted Vikings alumni Orlando Thomas and
Wally Hilgenberg. Members of their respective families were on hand as part of the presentation. “The ALS Association appreciates not
only the generosity of the Wilf family and the Minnesota Vikings for their financial support of those living with ALS, but the opportunity to
spread ALS awareness to a greater audience throughout Minnesota and the country. The Minnesota Vikings support is key to helping us
find a cause and cure for ALS,” said Spalding.

“Owner Zygi Wilf, Visanthe Shiancoe and Sidney Rice were a big hit
as they interacted with over 400 kids that attended the program.
They displayed a strong passion for giving back to the community
as they encouraged the kids to get up and be active for at least 60
minutes per day. They’re on target with the YMCA’s effort to engage
kids in active play to curb the increasing rate of childhood obesity.
I applaud their effort to inspire kids to get more physically active.”
– Mark Bjorlie, YMCA of Austin
“We are proud of our partnership with the Minnesota Vikings for
so many reasons. From the staff and players’ enthusiasm
around the Vikings Children’s Fund Summer Lunch Program,
to the excitement surrounding the Taste of the NFL, the Vikings
organization as a whole is making a tremendous impact on the lives
of our hungry neighbors. We look forward to continued success in
the coming years.”

Haiti Earthquake Relief
Generous Vikings fans donated more than $7,500 to The Salvation Army
“Haiti Relief Fund” prior to the Dallas Cowboys playoff game at Mall of
America Field. “Vikings fans inspired us with an outpouring that helped us
rush aid to Haiti,” said Major Darryl Leedom, Commander of the Twin Cities
Salvation Army.
“Brett Favre’s impact on our community has been tremendous, not
only for his superb athletic prowess on the field, but also for the way
he utilizes his opportunities off the field to work with organizations
like the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Minnesota. He generously
offers his time and understands the value that joy holds in the lives
of our wish families.”
– Barb Koch, Make-A-Wish Foundation of Minnesota
“The Minnesota Vikings have been a valuable partner to the City
of Brooklyn Park. The team has proven itself time and time again
that it’s an inspiration on and off the field. From the players helping
us build a brand new playground at Crest View Elementary, to
tight end Visanthe Shiancoe taking the time to spend Christmas
with local children, we know the Vikings are not just your ordinary
professional sports team. It’s a world class organization that cares
about its communities.”
– Mayor Steve Lampi, City of Brooklyn Park
“The Minnesota Vikings are a tremendous health and wellness
partner. Midwest Dairy is active in schools because our dairy
farmers are committed to teaching kids about good nutrition and
being active. The Minnesota Vikings have the same commitment to
the children of Minnesota. Through the ‘Eat Right, Get Movin’ with
Viktor School Assembly Program, Viktor the Viking and his friends
brought the healthy eating and activity messages of the ‘Fuel Up
to Play 60’ program to more than 21,500 Minnesota students
this school year. It’s a fun and educational way for the Vikings and
Midwest Dairy to get Minnesota kids excited about physical activity
and eating healthy.”

The Vikings organization will reflect on its past frequently
in 2010 as the franchise celebrates its 50th season. What
won’t be lost in this celebration, though, is the future. And
the organization realizes the key to our future is the wellbeing of our children.
Ben and Abby Leber continued to lead the season-long
player and Vikings Women’s Organization (VWO) visits to the
University of Minnesota Amplatz Children’s Hospital. Heath and
Julie Farwell were regular participants as well.
A crucial component to the Vikings commitment to
community has been its work with children. In an effort to
further emphasize its desire to making a positive difference
in the lives of children, the Vikings organization established
the Vikings Children’s Fund (VCF) in 1978.
The VCF is a means for Vikings players, coaches,
cheerleaders, staff and their families to focus their
community support on helping children. Since its inception,
the VCF has raised more than $9 million to give back to
those in need. This past year, the VCF donated $205,000
to the University of Minnesota Department of Pediatrics,
increasing the total support to more than $5 million.
Eric Frampton, Husain Abdullah, Heath Farwell, Ben Leber,
John Sullivan, Sage Rosenfels and VWO members posed for a

fans, allows the VCF to remain generous in its
commitment to benefiting children.

Taste of the NFL
A highlighted and successful annual event during Super Bowl week, Taste of the NFL has raised
more than $6.8 million for hunger relief since being established in Minnesota as part of Super
Bowl XXVI. Many NFL cities and states, including Minneapolis and the Vikings, now host their own
celebrity events during the football season to support this great cause. The Vikings 2009 local Taste
of the NFL was held at International Market Square in November and featured appearances from
Vikings alumni, players – including Kevin Williams – and cheerleaders, sample food from 14 top
area restaurants, a silent auction and autograph sessions. Proceeds went directly to the Vikings
Summer Lunch Program.
Arctic Blast
The 15th annual Minnesota Vikings Arctic Blast Snowmobile Rally, an event that features
snowmobile giveaways, an ice fishing pond, outdoor BBQ and other special games and events at
various “Blast Points,” was held at Lake Mille Lacs in February. Current and former Vikings players,
along with the Vikings Cheerleaders, Viktor and team executives, joined fans and Vikings supporters
at the event. Alumni Chris Doleman and Henry Thomas traded stories of battles in the NFL
trenches with Defensive Line Coach Karl Dunbar.

Playground
Vikings and Toro team up to build playgrounds and communities
“Toro is proud to partner with the Minnesota Vikings and KaBOOM! on the playground project at Crest View
Elementary. Building a playground is more than putting up a structure; it’s building a healthy community.”
– Mike Hoffman, Chairman and CEO, Toro Company
Vikings players and coaches spend much of the offseason building a team that will contend
on the field. But each offseason they also take time from their schedules to build a more
noble cause in a local community.
In collaboration with KaBOOM!, more than 250 volunteers, including Vikings players,
coaches, as well as the entire staff, joined forces to build a new and safe playground at
Crest View Elementary School in the northwest suburb of Brooklyn Park.
KaBOOM! is an organization that uses an innovative community-building model to bring
together business and community interests to construct new playgrounds, skateparks,
sports fields and ice rinks across North America.
“I’m absolutely overwhelmed with the kindness and
generosity that’s been displayed throughout this entire
project. I want to thank Toro, and I want to thank the
Vikings. Without them, this would not happen.”
– Suzette Erickson, Principal, Crest View Elementary School
The playground was designed by kids but was built entirely by volunteers in one day. It
now provides hundreds of children at Crest View Elementary School and the Brooklyn Park
community a safe place to play.

The total cost of the construction of the playground was split between the Vikings and their
community partner – Toro.

Marketing/CMO Steve LaCroix participated in the Vikings
fourth annual playground build.
Toro CEO Mike Hoffman and Vikings Owner/President Mark Wilf dug

SUPPORTING OUR TROOPS
The analogy of a football player being a “soldier” or a football game being a “war” is one we see
often, but it’s also one the Vikings organization rejects. Although our players perform like warriors
on game days, we recognize the men and women who risk their lives on a daily basis in the
military are the true heroes.

Community Outreach – Devoted to Volunteering
For the third consecutive year, every player on the Vikings season-long 53-man roster participated in the team’s community outreach efforts. The Vikings receive
thousands of requests each year from a wide range of worthy organizations and the players help as many people in the community as possible. From visiting
hospitals, to building a playground at an elementary school, to assisting those in need at local shelters, Vikings players enjoy bringing smiles to others but also take
seriously the responsibility that comes with being a Minnesota Viking.
Make-A-Wish Foundation
Prior to joining the Vikings, quarterback Brett Favre had granted more than 200 Make-A-Wish experiences. He continued that commitment in 2009, bringing smiles to many children and encouraging
them to maintain their positive attitude. Christa and Jim Kleinsasser served as co-chairs for the Make-A-Wish gala “Wish Ball” in 2009. Jim and Christa have been longtime supporters of Make-AWish of Minnesota. Chad and Jenni Greenway will serve as co-chairs for the “Wish Ball” in 2010.

In addition to our charitable outreach, the Minnesota Vikings
are pleased when asked by different organizations to use our

message to Live United. Madieu was selected for this campaign
because of the fact that he DOES Live United. Williams recently
built a school in his hometown of Freetown, Sierra Leone in
memory of his mother. In addition, Madieu pledged $2 million
to the University of Maryland toward global health initiatives.
Locally, Madieu partners with the North Community YMCA
Youth and Teen Enrichment Center.

E.J. HENDERSON
Man of the Year
E.J. Henderson has progressed from a second round pick
in 2003 to a team leader and middle linebacker on one of
the NFL’s top defenses. During that time, Henderson has
also been an active member of the team’s outreach and he’s
established himself as a leader off the field and in
the community.
In recognition of his commitment to community, Henderson
was named the Minnesota Vikings 2009 Community Man of
the Year.
In recognition of his community service, E.J. Henderson
was presented the 2009 Minnesota Vikings Community Man
of the Year award by Vikings Executive Director of Community
Relations Brad Madson.
Henderson was active in the community early in his career,
volunteering his time with local organizations such as the
United Way, Police Athletic League, Minneapolis Park and
Recreation Board, Arc Greater Twin Cities and Boys & Girls
Clubs of the Twin Cities.
But Henderson took his volunteerism to a new level in June
of 2007, when he established the E.J. Henderson Youth
Foundation to benefit underserved Twin Cities urban youth,
an effort that was aided by a $100,000 personal donation.
The Foundation’s programming centers on the mind, body
and soul by providing academic enrichment, intensive
physical workouts and life skill sessions at its facility in
Eden Prairie.
E.J. is also a strong spokesperson for the NFL’s “Play60”
message, which encourages youngsters to be active for at
least 60 minutes a day.
E.J., along with his brother Erin, distributed
500 turkeys to needy families at Cub Foods on
West Broadway in North Minneapolis.
This past summer during Vikings Training Camp in Mankato,
Henderson invited athletes from the E.J. Henderson Youth
Foundation onto the field following practice to meet other
Vikings players and chat about their progress.
Viktor the Viking, Fred Evans, E.J. Henderson,
Bryant McKinnie and Tremaine Johnson posed
with youngsters from United Way agencies as part
of the United Way “Hometown Huddle.” The Vikings,
through NFL Charities, contributed $10,000 toward
a new Vikings-themed Fitness Zone at Henderson’s
Youth Foundation facility in Eden Prairie.

The NFL Selected Minnesota Vikings to Host National
In 2009, through the commitment of the Wilf family to
support youth football, the NFL selected the Minnesota
Vikings to host the NFL National 7-on-7 Tournament at
Winter Park. More than 150 of the nation’s elite high school
football players came to Minnesota July 10-11. Teams
from 8 AFC and 8 NFC markets participated. To qualify
to represent an NFL market in the National Tournament,
each player had to complete the NFL HSPD program that
includes character development. Local entrant Lakeville
South High School and Coach Larry Thompson posted
several victories in round robin qualifying. The two teams
that made it to the finals—Atlanta and Miami—displayed
tremendous talent and sportsmanship, with Miami
prevailing 48-38.
Coach Childress gave the players an inspiring message,
encouraging them to focus on their assignments and
work to improve each game over the weekend.
Lakeville South represented our state in strong fashion
by advancing through several rounds.
All-Pro Steve Hutchinson served as the keynote
speaker at the evening welcome dinner. Hutchinson
spoke about the importance of making the right choices
in life.
Mark Wilf was presented the “Appreciation Award” for his
support of youth football by the Army National Guard.
22
All-Pro Adrian Peterson spoke to the athletes about
goal setting and encouraged the athletes to write their
goals down so they can see them each day. Afterward,
Adrian stayed around to check out the action.
The athleticism of our nation’s elite high school
playmakers was on display July 10-11.
7-on-7 Tournament in 2009...
Members of the St. Louis Rams team enjoyed a hearty meal after the
first day of competition. Meet Minneapolis organized the dinner at
the St. Anthony Main Event Centre.
HSDP 7-on-7 teams consist of a 10-man roster with 7 players on
the field at a time. The games are 20 minutes long and are played
on a 50-yard field.
Approximately 10,000 high school football players nationwide
were enrolled in the HSPD program.
2009 NFL HSPD 7-on-7 National Champions-Miami Dolphins
The Miami Dolphins entrant won the 2009 title with a 48-38 victory over the
Atlanta Falcons in a see-saw battle. The Miami team was made up of players from
Palm Beach County, many of which have Division I scholarship offers on the table.
The top high school players showcased their skills
and made many new friends during the tournament.
Miami’s passing attack proved too much for the tenacious
Atlanta defense in the Championship game.

Youth Football
The Vikings are proud to work with USA Football,
the sport’s national governing body on youth
and amateur levels, on several initiatives. Each
year youth football leaders from across the state,
consisting of league commissioners, presidents
and board members, gather at the USA Football/
Minnesota State Leadership Forum to discuss the
state of the game and ways youth leagues can be
improved.
“With the support from the Vikings and the
University of Minnesota, USA Football is helping
unify the sport on youth levels. Ultimately it’s the
kids who love to play football who benefit from these
meetings—they’re going to enjoy the game more
when their coaches and league commissioners are
prepared,” said Joe Owens, USA Football Central
Regional Manager.
Minnesota Football Coaches Association
Tight Ends Coach Jimmie Johnson presented at the annual
Minnesota Football Coaches Association clinic on the finer points of
tight end play. Ron Stolski, the Executive Director of the Minnesota
Football Coaches Association, thanked Jimmie for instructing.

USA Football “All-Fundamentals” Team
In July, the Vikings hosted the annual USA Football/Minnesota Vikings Youth
Coaching Clinic at Winter Park. More than 100 youth coaches participated and
enjoyed hearing Heath Farwell’s presentation on overcoming obstacles and
ways for coaches to motivate different personalities.
Through his play on the field and commitment to helping
others off it, Steve Hutchinson was named to the inaugural
USA Football “All-Fundamentals” Team. Offensive Coordinator
Darrell Bevell presented Hutchinson with the award. Only 26
NFL players were selected for the honor.
“The Minnesota Football Coaches Association (MFCA) is proud of and thankful for its partnership with the Minnesota Vikings, and their exemplary
commitment to community service; their constant and consistent example of giving back. The MFCA motto-The Keepers Of The Game- has
its roots in a commitment of service to the coaches, players, schools, and communities of our state. In a similar fashion, the Vikings’ service to
patrons, organizations and communities certainly qualify them to be recognized as keepers of the marvelous culture that is the very fabric of
Minnesota life.” – Ron Stolski, Executive Director, Minnesota Football Coaches Association

Cheerleaders and Viktor
The Minnesota Vikings Cheerleaders (MVC) and Viktor the Viking are charged with energizing passionate Vikings fans on
Sundays. But their contribution and commitment aren’t limited to game day or a football field – these talented women
and Viktor spend time in the community, appearing at more than 300 events each year. The MVC and Viktor continued
to be in demand for corporate, community and charity events around the state and beyond. This commitment has
even crossed borders with trips to support our American troops in Iraq, Japan and other countries as well as work with
international dance and cheer teams in Mexico.

“No matter the public glory available for football quarterbacks, it’s nothing compared to the personal
gratitude a “community quarterback” gets from the people who are desperate for a second chance.
Because of Joel Abrahamson’s time, talents and ideas, the Harbor Light Shelter has dramatically
improved its quality of service to people in crisis. We are thankful for Joel and all he has done for us.”

The state of Minnesota is fortunate to have thousands of
residents who are committed to volunteering. The Vikings
recognize one individual annually who goes above and beyond
all expectations to aid a community and make a difference in
the lives of others. This person is honored as the Minnesota
Vikings Community Quarterback.
In 2009, we were proud to honor Joel Abrahamson, who for
years has volunteered countless hours of his time and legal
services at The Salvation Army Harbor Light Center—the
oldest and largest homeless shelter in the state of Minnesota.
Joel has also been an active member of its Advisory Council.
The Salvation Army is a strong community partner and friend
of the Minnesota Vikings. In addition to Joel’s service, we
would like to highlight some of the ways the Vikings and The
Salvation Army partnered in 2009.
