Better that only a few Catholics should be left,
staunch and sincere in their religion, than that they

the open foes of our faith.

CHURCH COLLECTION
We appreciate the generosity of you, our parishioners. When
we have a second collection, people tend to split their usual
offering between the two collections, which is understandable
given the pressure of our economic times. However we rely on
the first collection to keep the parish and school going and pay
the bills. We ask that if there are two collections you include the
usual amount you give in the first collection and do the best you
can with the second if you are able to.

FROM THE DESK
OF FR. MIZZI-GILI
Christmas 2014
Dear Parishioners;
As this is my first Christmas letter to
you, allow me, first, to extend a warm
appreciation to you for all that you have done
for our parish of St. Eugene and your warm
reception given to me as your administrator.
Thank you for your generosity and support.
Reflecting on the past, I look back at past
Christmases and how each passing year brings
about a sense of renewal. A renewal with the
celebration of the Incarnation- God making His
dwelling amongst us and with family.
Christmas is my favorite time of the year
because not only do we get to sing our favorite
Christmas songs but we have a chance to reflect
on what Christmas is really about- a time of life
and of love with those who mean so much to us
and remembering on that most sacred night
where the King of kings and the Lord of lords
came down to us in the form of a baby. Why a
baby? A baby because like our faith, a baby
needs to be nurtured and protected so that the
child may grow and become that valued
member of society. Our faith in Christ Jesus
needs to be met with that tender loving care
that we approach when taking care of any baby.
My hope is that this Christmas and the
Christmases yet to come, are met with a hope,
the grace and peace of our Saviour be felt in
your hearts and minds and that it spread
throughout your family, friends and to the
world.
May the intercession of the Holy Family,
Jesus, Mary and Joseph be our model and guide
this Christmas.
To you and your families, a very Blessed
and Holy Christmas.
Sincerely in Christ,
Rev. Anthony Mizzi-Gili, Jr.
Administrator
WHAT DOES THE SOLEMNITY OF MARY
MEAN?
Ginny Kubitz Moyer Answers:
The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God is a
liturgical celebration observed on January 1st. It
is a holy day of obligation for Catholics,
meaning that Mass attendance is required
(though the Mass obligation is sometimes
waived by the bishop for various reasons; when
in doubt, check with your parish.)
The use of the word “Solemnity” here is not a
statement about Mary’s personality. It is a
designation used for certain days within the
liturgical (church-based) calendar of the
Church. Solemnities are the highest rank of
liturgical celebration, higher than feast days or
memorials. By celebrating a solemnity
dedicated to Mary’s motherhood, the Church
highlights the significance of her part in the life
of Jesus, and emphasizes that he is both
human and divine.
Though New Year’s Day may seem more like a
day for football and hangovers than for Mary,
there’s a beautiful spiritual significance in
celebrating her during the heart of the
Christmas season. Pope Paul VI, in his
apostolic exhortation Marialis Cultus (1974),
called the Solemnity of Mary “a fitting occasion
for renewing adoration of the newborn Prince of
Peace, for listening once more to the glad
tidings of the angels (cf.Lk 2:14), and for
imploring from God, through the Queen of
Peace, the supreme gift of peace.”
