From the Vicarage
A Very Happy New Year to all the readers of the Bridge and Three Village News.
Some thoughts for the coming year.
Be always at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbours, and let each New
Year find you a better person.
Benjamin Franklin from ‘Poor Richard’s Almanac’ 1755
It seems to me that we can never give up longing and wishing while we are
thoroughly alive. There are certain things we feel to be beautiful and good and we
must hunger after them.
George Eliot ‘Mill on the Floss’ Book V Chapter VI
Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,
The flying cloud, the frosty light
The year is dying in the night;
Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.
Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells, across the snow:
The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true.
Ring out false pride in place and blood,
The civic slander and the spite;
Ring in the love of truth and right,
Ring in the common love of good.
Ring out old shapes of foul disease,
Ring out the narrowing lust of gold;
Ring out the thousand wars of old,
Ring in the thousand years of peace.
Lord Alfred Tennyson ‘In Memoriam’ from Canto CVI
Both bad and good. Last season's fruit is eaten
And the full fed beast shall kick the empty pail.
For last year's words belong to last year's language
And next year's words await another voice.
T. S Eliot from The Four Quartets: Little Gidding’ Section II
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t
do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe
harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

The Cook
As so many of us still insist on choosing turkey instead of beef or any other meat at
Christmas, I thought I would give you another recipe for using up the leftovers, so try
this one!
Turkey goulash
Ingredients
2 tbsp olive oil,
1 large onion peeled and sliced,
2-4 garlic cloves, peeled and sliced,
350g / 12oz potatoes peeled and diced,
450g / 1lb fresh diced turkey,
1 tbsp paprika,
2 tbsp plain flour,
450ml /1 pt turkey or chicken stock,
1 tbsp tomato puree,
salt and freshly ground black pepper,
4 tomatoes, chopped,
a few drops of Tabasco sauce.
1 green pepper, deseeded and chopped soured cream and snipped chives to garnish,
warm crusty bread to serve.
1. Heat 1 tablespoon of the oil in a large frying pan and gently sauté the onion and garlic
for 5 minutes or until softened. Add the potatoes and saute for 2 more minutes.
Remove from the pan with a slotted draining spoon and reserve.
2.Add the remaining oil to the pan and seal the diced turkey on all sides then return the
vegetables to the pan and sprinkle in the paprika and flour. Cook for 2 minutes stirring
frequently, then gradually stir in stock, the tomato puree and seasoning to taste.
3.Bring to the boil, stirring occasionally then lower the heat. Add the chopped tomatoes
to the pan and Tabasco sauce to taste, then simmer for 20 minutes.
4. Blanch the green pepper in boiling water for 4 minutes, drain and add to the pan.
Adjust seasoning, then cook for 5-10 minutes or until the turkey is tender. Turn into a
warm serving dish, top with small spoonfuls of soured cream and sprinkle with the
snipped chives.
Serve immediately with warm crusty bread. This at least will be tasty!

Thanks to the generosity of the public and local businesses, and the diligence of

Anniversary Year.
The total donated by you wonderful people for the welfare of our ex-Service

They can’t thank you personally, but we are sure the beneficiaries of your openheartedness are very grateful for the rehabilitation and support they receive as a

Dorset Education Partnership
The Pamphill Christmas Carol Concert
By Lily Carter and Freya Wakeham
On Tuesday 9th of December 2014, Pamphill School did their Christmas
nativity called “Children of the World” at Wimborne Minster. Mr. Davies,
our head teacher, welcomed all the parents before Mrs. Royle did some
readings from the Bible and then we started our performance.
First the candle lighters went up to the front on to the stage to say their
lines and light their candles with Mr. Davies. Then we all sang “Away in a
Manger” for the opening song. That’s when the three narrators started
presenting the show up in the pulpit.
Gabriel joined the narrators in the pulpit to announce that seven angels
would get to visit six countries. Angel 1 went to Poland, Angel 2 went to
China, Angel 3 went to Australia, Angel 4 went to Africa, Angel 5 went to
USA and Angels 6 & 7 went to Ireland.
Next the children from Poland came up on the stage and said their way of
saying Happy Christmas which is “Wesolych Swiat!”
Then it was the children from China and their way of saying happy
Christmas is “Sheng dan kuai le!”
Australia was next and they speak the same language as us so all they say
is “Happy Christmas everyone!”
The African children followed and their way of saying Happy Christmas is
“Khilisimasi Yabwino!”
After that was the USA and their language is a bit like the Australians so
they say, “Happy Christmas everyone have a nice day!”
Finally, but not least, it was Ireland’s turn and they say “Nollaig Shona”.
All the children sang the song ‘Children of the World’ together to end the
concert.

WALKIE TALKIES TRAMPS PAMPHILL
November’s walk saw us start at the big gap
(technical walking expression!) between the school
and The Vine on the clearly marked Stour valley
Way. This path leads right out to the B3082 at
Hillbutts which was the noisiest part by far!
Most of the land we walked on belongs to the National Trust, but it was a little
discomforting to actually walk through a private garden at one point, even if it is
a right of way. We then walked past Pamphill Village Hall, stopping for a
welcome coffee at Pamphill Dairy Farm Shop as it had got a bit chilly. From
there past St. Stephen’s Church (built by Henrietta Bankes of Kingston Lacy
House in memory of her husband in 1906-7) and into All Fools Lane.
The Trust have obviously done some major drainage work on this pretty little
lane which sometimes resembles a stream when the rains come. At the end of
the lane we turned left and followed the Waymark signs past ‘The Moot’ and
ended up passing ancient Pamphill School which was built in 1698.
We have a plethora of drover’s paths and byways in our area but you have to
leave the car at home to find them. We covered about 3 ½ miles and it took a
couple of hours, got some much needed exercise and had a jolly good natter
along the way. You could join us next time!

Sturminster Marshall Evening WI
We certainly have some very talented and artistic ladies in our WI – in
November Lesley Kemble showed us how to assemble a Christmas
Door Hanger using the humble spud as the base. The hall was awash with foliage raided
from gardens and hedgerows; baubles, ribbons and twinkly lights were plentiful and from
the chaos, chatter and laughter some beautiful decorations appeared.
Heather advised the members that we have recently joined the Woodbury Hill Group of
Women’s Institutes for which we need to appoint two representatives to attend group
committee meetings and report back. The next meeting of the Woodbury Hill Group is
in March.
The next event being organised by the Woodbury Hill Group is the Centenary Baton
visit to Sturminster Marshall on 28 January 2015 from 11.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. To reflect
the austerity of 100 years ago the theme will be a ‘soup kitchen’ and members are
invited to dress to represent that era (Daisy to Lady Grantham).
Our January 2015 meeting will be on Thursday 15th at 7.30 pm in the Memorial Hall.
There will be a baking demonstration by three of our members. Please come along and
join us, you can be assured of a warm welcome.
Just a gentle reminder that renewal subs will be due in January.

A Personal View - by Vera Ricketts
Well, may I be the first to wish you all a Happy New Year, and hope that 2015 will be a
very good year for all of us. I would like to thank all those involved in the ‘Bridge’, either
editing, sending in items for each edition, publishing and delivering it. You all do a great
job, and I know it is well read and enjoyed by most people. Sometimes there are not
quite enough to go round, and other times more than we need, but that is how it is
sometimes. Like life . . . . . we think of it as all plain sailing then something happens and
it all goes pear-shaped,
but we get to rise above it.
When we start a new year we always look back to the last year and, as always, last year
was a busy one but not everything went to plan. But that is how it is, that is the tapestry
of life. Just when you are thinking all is well then something looms up and you are back
to the start, but as always you get up, dust yourself off and start again. Someone once
said to me “I wish I knew what is going to happen” but I don’t know about that, because
if we did know, would I would we really want to? I know I wouldn’t, because then things
would not be a surprise, would they? Well, life is not like that, we must not only be
patient but go with the flow. We don’t know what this year will bring, we only know for
sure that we will muddle through whatever the days bring. But I will meet the year with
hope and carry on with help from others. Oh, yes, following up from last month’s Bridge
I am still feeding the birds and ‘Silver back’ the pheasant has brought a couple of friends
with him. Also, I have seen a pair of green woodpeckers and other birds seem to be
pairing up already! Happy New Year to everything.

STURMINSTER MARSHALL JANUARY PARISH JOTTINGS
Following these jottings are two pieces of information we would like you to pay special
attention to, the first is the new Playground Fence proposal which we would like your
views on especially if you have any issues with this. We are hoping to be able to put a
document showing the plan for the fencing on the Parish Website and on Parish
Noticeboards. The second is the list of Flood Wardens and their contact details. We
are very grateful to these seven villagers for agreeing to take on this important role
especially in light of the weather we have experienced in recent years.
We have recently received funding of a total of £2,500.00 towards the new Playground
fencing with the help of our District and County Councillors Mr Paul Bennett and Mr
Robin Cooke, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for the support.

Last month we had a multi-agency meeting to express our concerns over various parish
issues. Among many things discussed was the flooding of the A31 at Vines Close, this is
currently being investigated with regard to drainage running underneath the highway,
along with flooding of the A350 opposite the Fish Farm. We brought up about the
flooding in village generally especially after heavy rain and requested that the drains be
cleared. The flooding issues experienced in the area of the Church end of the village are
also currently being investigated by Flood Risk Management at County. Wessex Water
proposed works in the village that were reported in last months jottings are still at the
planning stage and unlikely to take place until next year.

NEW PLAYGROUND FENCE PROPOSAL
After a number of consultations / site visits with suppliers, discussions are well
advanced to install a 1.2 m high metal bow top railing fence to completely

means of two self-closing gates.
Installation will take place within the first three months of 2015. Any questions
or feedback to the proposals would be welcome by 31 January. Please direct
these to the Parish Clerk.

+ STURMINSTER MARSHALL DAYTIME W.I.
Our year ended pleasantly with a Celebration Christmas Lunch
and then we retired to the Memorial Hall to deal with any
business, we understood. However a pleasant surprise awaited us when we
were asked to sing the carol Good King Wenceslas, then Liz and Ann performed
an extremely funny skit based on the carol but with a theme of modern
officialdom and the art of competing with computers. Flowers were presented
to Birthday girls, Frieda and Moira who had attained the grand age of 90 years.
A special candle was lit on a cake for her and we all enjoyed a slice with a cup of
tea.
Branch business was then dealt with but on January the 28th when the W.I.
Centenary Celebration Baton comes to our village on its way around the
country there is a lot of planning to do. We are being joined by members of
branches around this area who have not been chosen to host the event so it is
quite an honour for Sturminster Marshall.
The big problem at the moment is not knowing what time the baton will arrive
here but hope to be advised soon. Plans are underway to await the arrival with
light lunches, hot drinks etc. Possible entertainments are being investigated.
However if you feel you would like to join the celebration we plan to put a
notice on the Hall Notice Board when a programme has been arranged. Our
W.I. Branch has been part of the village since 1919 and feel it would be nice if
the village could be involved in the event.
Our first branch meeting of 2015 will be on January 14th with a talk and
demonstration on Pottery by Linda Browne and our Exhibition - an unusual
ceramic vessel.
Wishing you all a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous 2015.
Rita Coomer – Sturminster Marshall Women's Institute.

STURMINSTER MARSHALL SHORT MAT BOWLS AND SOCIAL CLUB
We are currently looking for new members, no experience necessary We pride
ourselves as being a very sociable, friendly and non-League Club; our aim is to have
fun and enjoy our game.
The Club plays on the following days:Monday and Thursday afternoons 2.00pm – 5.00pm,
Thursday evenings
6.15pm – 9.15pm,
All sessions are held in the Sturminster Marshall Memorial Hall.
It is a great sport for all ages and we would welcome some younger players, so do
come along. The club owns several sets of bowls and these can be lent to players
who do not have their own, but they must remain on the premises. Completely flat
shoes must be worn on the mats.
We are a mixed club and we do not compete in leagues, so the emphasis is on
pleasure and not pressure. We do join other local clubs for just friendly matches.
INTERESTED ! – come along, your first three sessions will be free, so give it a
try.

English Usage - a personal view by Michael Evans
Specialist vocabularies
Many occupations, trades and professions have their jargon, which is fine if they
keep it within their own circles. It’s when they use it to speak to the general
public that I feel impatient and sometimes have to ask for a translation into plain
English. But I am amused rather than irritated by the jargon used by weather
forecast presenters on TV. They usually start by telling us what the weather has
been like, which is hardly a forecast, and pepper their talk with phrases one
doesn’t normally hear in everyday speech. In a single broadcast recently I noted
these:Patchy rain (could it be repaired?)
Spits and spots (of rain) (Not very nice manners)
A weather front is slicing its way over the North Sea,
Misty and murky or Mist and murk (what’s the difference, I wonder?)
Temperatures will struggle to go higher (Clever! How did they train them to do that?)
As we head through the afternoon . . (with our heads lowered against the wind, I
presume)
It will be a usable day tomorrow (applies to any day in my life!)
Into next week it remains cold (perhaps for fear of saying “it will be cold”?)
These are often accompanied by balletic waves of the wrist and fingers, and you
can be so fascinated by the funny diction and movements that you don’t
remember what weather they actually tried to forecast.

Forged from the voices of Hannah James (Kerfuffle, duo with Sam Sweeney),
Hazel Askew (The Askew Sisters, The Artisans) and Rowan Rheingans (The
Rheingans Sisters, Nancy Kerr band), Lady Maisery explore vocal harmony to
breathtaking effect, through their fresh interpretations of songs and ballads.
They released their debut album 'Weave & Spin' in 2012 and as a result they
were nominated for a BBC Radio 2 Folk Award. 2013 saw the release of their
critically acclaimed second album 'Mayday', which reached the number one slot
in BBC Radio 3’s Late Junction ‘Top 10 Releases of the Summer', was made a
‘Top of the World’ album by Songlines magazine and was given 5 stars by The
Financial Times. All three members are musicians as much as vocalists, which
can be seen not just in their tune singing, but also in their intelligent, striking
arrangements on fiddle, harp, banjo accordion and foot percussion. Be prepared
to be enchanted by rich harmonies and sumptuous clashes as Lady Maisery
emerge as one of the most original new groups on the UK folk scene.

Furnishing The Winter Garden by Lys de Bray
Solid evergreen shapes are what matter in the winter garden, so have a look round now
to see where you could put them. Substantial blocks of healthy evergreen/grey/yellow
make good garden furniture and though they are best bought small they will grow, they
will, they will! For a colourful and vigorous shrub, choose Elaeagnus pungens `Maculata'
(4m x 5m) if you let it be. It doesn't mind a bit of shade and is useful as a cover-up to
something unlovely that can't be moved. It has leathery bright yellow leaves edged with
green, excellent as a fill-in to a vase of the first daffodils. (Soon, soon!). Keep it tidied up
and watch out for the thorns. Pittosporum tenuifolium - (10m x 5m) is special-looking
when grown in isolation because of its wavy-edged glossy leaves which catch the light but
make sure it is sheltered from cold winds. The variety P. t. `Nigricans' has black twigs
and shiny purple foliage. Most of the members of this family have tiny scented flowers in
summer and the foliage is a flower-arranger's stand-by. Cryptomeria japonica Elegans' (6 10m) is a soft-looking conifer, green in summer but usefully turning bronze-crimson in
winter. It can grow too big for its boots in the average garden, so enjoy its seasonal
changes for a while and then take it out and start again if you like it and miss its bulk.
Chamaecyparis pisifera `Filifera Aurea' (12m) is a feathery yellow conifer, good against a
dark-green background. It is slow-growing, tolerates any soil but will eventually have to
go when it outgrows the available space. There are several really 'blue' conifers, very
beautiful in the winter garden and always a better blue on acid soil. You can have a lot of
fun with ivies because they are so good-natured, responding well to twining, twiddling,
tying and pruning. Set a pair of stout posts on a corner-site, staple or tie some chicken
wire to encircle each and set a pair of same-variety ivies to grow up each post; tie to
grow in opposing spirals. Choose either green or variegated but don't have different
varieties on the posts, the statement made by ivy pillars all of one kind is much more
emphatic. Resist any temptation to grow 'something else' up the posts, it's the ivy that
will make the impact both in winter and summer.
Try a holly, or, better, two, for possible berries. Hollies are fairly slow-growing and
respond well to topiarising. Choose plants labeled male or female to be sure of berries
and check with garden-centre staff because some names are odd/daft - for example, Ilex x
altaclarenis `Golden King' is a lady and I. aquifolium 'Silver Queen' is a male, though 'she' is
sometimes listed as 'Silver King'... but don't let nonsensical nomenclature stop you from
choosing nice plants for your garden. It might be a good idea to go to Hilliers at Romsey
to have a look, they used to do group walks and you could ask questions (if you could
keep up...). Yew is always good, responding well to clipping or topiarising. Choose a
fastigiate green variety such as Taxus baccata `Fastigiata' (10m) or the smaller golden T. b.
`Standishii (1.5m). Don't choose in a hurry, make sure yours is the best in the row and
not growing crooked even as a young plant, it is going to be with you for a very long
time. Site all corner-planted shrubs and trees well back because they will eventually
billow over the path edge and there is nothing uglier than an unevenly clipped focal
specimen!
