Whether they were painting in the summer or doing general chores, the elders are always around to lend a hand. Now, with winter in full swing, they’ve begun clinics in the library with two very unique goals. “We call the first one the Techno Challenge,” said Elder Elliot. “We sit down in the library on Tuesdays and help people learn to use their technology. “We help with IPhones, computers, everything … We just want to make sure people know how to use whatever technology they do have.” Elliott says it all started when the librarian asked for help. “We helped her with her cell phone for a couple of minutes, and she asked if we knew a lot about these types of things,” she said. “We had played around with this type of stuff before, and she asked if we’d help people with it.” So Elder Elliott and Elder Wiltse began their clinic, which runs Tuesdays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. “It’s postponed right now until the new year, but that’s usually when it is,” said Elliott. “It’s inconvenient if you don’t know how to work technology. Times are changing and everything evolves.” The second clinic is a genealogy one on Fridays from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. “We teach the basics of people’s family history. We show people what websites to us, how to get information and offer a starter course,” said Wiltse. The church uses familysearch.org, a free service that can find a number of ge- Vitamins, Minerals, Supplements, Herbs, Cosmetics, Appliances, Natural Foods We Carry Wine Making Supplies and Accessories SYDNEY JONES CLINE HUTCHISON GULL LAKE, SK 306.861-8753 [email protected] Christmas is Our Specialty Yours Trulee GifT shop 147 Central Ave. N. • Swift Current Health Foods DisCouNts For seNiors Bill Siever, Proprietor 222 Central Ave. N., Swift Current, SK 306-773-1266 Registered Massage Therapist Gull Lake - tuesday - thursday hazlet - mondays & Fridays 1-306-671-7192 Call or Text nealogical facts for users. “The library also has a version of ancestry.ca, but it’s not like a platinum membership. You can do basic things on it. We get to help people by doing this and it gets people into the library,” said Elliott. While Elliott was interested in people learning how to use the products and sites to find out about genetic diseases or traits, Wiltse was more interested in finding people’s ancestral stories. “You hear lots of stories and can find out a lot about yourself. Sometimes it could be things you don’t want to hear, but it’s interesting to learn your history.” Elliott remembers fondly one time in particularly where their help paid off. “People from our church do some indexing and finding of records. Some work might already be done on your family,” said Elliott. “So a woman put in a name, and the computer gave her a suggested person. She clicked it and it exploded with information. There was a line back to 860 A.D.” The response from people who have utilized the service has been good, and the elders are happy to provide it. “People who come in and very excited and happy they did it. We’re happy to help everyone. It’s what we’re here for.” Look for the clinics to start back up in the library in the new year. Q: What do you get from sitting on the snow too long? A: Polaroids!
