When we were married, my
husband and I gradually worked
out and grew in our relationship.
Four of the characteristics St.
Paul mentions in today’s reading
from
Colossians
were
particularly helpful for us:
patience, forgiveness, love, and
gratitude. They helped us
overcome the challenges of
building a life together, and each of our children gave
us ample opportunity to practice them over and over
again.
By God’s grace and with hard work, we’ve been
together more than thirty years. Sometimes I think,
“How did we do it?” We did it together, and we did it
with God, and I’m so grateful for my husband and for
two wonderful daughters who come back home at
Christmas and call just to say hello.
So it makes sense that we dedicate one Sunday to the
Holy Family. We don’t know a lot about Jesus’
childhood, but today’s gospel tells us that, as unusual
as the circumstances were, Mary and Joseph worked
with each other and with God to do the right thing for
Jesus. They followed the prescribed law, they listened
carefully to the prophecies and rejoicing of Anna and
Simeon, and they raised God’s Son to adulthood—
when he showed the world who he was.
Even after that, Mary was with him, loving and
grieving for him even at the end. What parent would
have done less?
The Holy Family undoubtedly practiced love,
patience, forgiveness, and gratitude with one another,
even as the Lord taught us to do. We honor them by
doing the same.

Matthew 2:1-12
The magi from the east followed the star until it
stopped still over the house. They entered, found the
child with Mary, prostrated themselves, did him
homage, and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and
myrrh. But because of Herod, they returned to their
home country by another way.
THE ARRIVAL OF THE MAGI
The arrival of the “magi” and their
inquiry regarding the child born to be
“king of the Jews” strikes fear in the
heart of Herod and all his minions.
Immediately, he seeks information
about the prophesied birth of the
Messiah, so Herod fears not some
future human usurper, but the divine
will itself that place a true and eternal king upon the
throne of David. The sad details of the story tell of this
tragic king’s futile efforts thwart the will of God
through schemes and subterfuge. But we’re left with a
hopeful image of a child in his mother’s lap piled with
gifts that foreshadow his destiny as King and Savior.

This feast is known as the Solemnity of the Blessed
Virgin Mary, Mother of God has an interesting history
that dates as far back as the fifth century. The liturgical
reforms of the Second Vatican Council restored the
original Roman practice, which replaced the
pagan celebration of the New Year,
with this day in honor of Mary.
MARY IS WITH US IN OUR STRUGGLES,
POPE FRANCIS TEACHES
“Mary accompanies us, struggles with us, sustains
Christians in their fight against the forces of evil.” The
trials and challenges of the conflict between God and Satan
is faced by every Christian disciple, and “Mary does not
leave them alone,” Pope Francis said. “The Mother of Christ
THE CHRISTMAS SEASON IN SLOW MOTION
We spend so much time preparing for Christmas and
so little time actually celebrating Christmas. Think of
the time we spend shopping, cooking, wrapping,
cleaning, and practicing for Christmas. Then
Christmas comes, and with a whirl it’s all over. We
need to celebrate Christmas in slow motion.
Mary Is Our Model
Mary is our model for a slow-motion celebration of
Christmas. On this feast day of hers, we are reminded
of Mary’s reaction to the original Christmas. Today’s
gospel tells us that “Mary treasured all these things
and reflected on them in her heart” (Luke 2:19).

Mary treasured her Christmas memories like parents
treasuring their family’s photo albums and souvenirs.
Mary thoughtfully sorted through the sounds and
sights of that first Christmas, spreading them out on
the wide table of her great heart, looking at them from
new angles, finding new meaning in them, reliving
them. Mary would never let Christmas rush past her
like a New Year’s resolution--made today, forgotten
tomorrow.

when we take an hour a day or a whole day each
month to treasure and reflect on God’s gifts to us!
Slowly and surely we will become more like Mary and
more like her son, Jesus.

the “Big Night” takes time, patience and a lot of work.
Many of you have seen some of our busy “elves” doing
their thing. We would like to take this opportunity to
say thank you to them. Our maintenance staff (Ralph,
Joe, James & Nick), under the direction of Billy
Connors, is the best. Their tireless work preparing the
Church, cleaning and shining everything is greatly
appreciated. Thanks guys!! Our “Church Ladies”
prepare the altar, water the flowers, and keep
everything in order. Thanks Ladies!!

the Queen of Peace Choir. Your joyful music is an
inspiration to us all.

PREPARING FOR MASS BY PRAYING AT HOME
The joy of being a Catholic is in the Eucharist. The
eucharistic life begins on the way to church. Go to
church with a heart made ready for the mystery. Begin
at home by reading the texts appointed for the day’s
Mass: First Reading, Responsorial Psalm, Second
Reading, and the Gospel. Let the word of God slowly
resonate in your heart; read the texts aloud, slowly and
with attention. Repeat the phrases that strike you. Let
the word itself become your prayer; send back to God
the word he has addressed to you. Then, for a few
moments, remain is silence. Adore the God who has
spoken to you. Ask him to give you hunger for the
“daily bread” (Luke 11:4) you will receive at Mass. Go
to church with hunger and desire; you will not be sent
away empty (cf. Luke 1:53) for God will fill you with
good things (cf. Luke1:53).

THE TRUE 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS!
“It ain’t over till it’s over” So said the great NY Yankee “theologian” Yogi Berra. What can be said
about baseball can be said about Christmas as well. The Season of Advent teaches us to wait,
to contemplate our steps on the way to Bethlehem, to build up slowly to the momentous occasion
of the Savior’s birth. Then Christmas comes and what a wonderful celebration we have for 24 hours.
But the next day the stores open stripped of their decorations to accept returns and exchanges,
Christmas trees are unceremoniously dumped at the front curb, and most of us breathe a sigh
of relief and forget about Christmas for another year – or until the credit card bills start
coming in February. But Christmas isn’t over till its over. And Christmas isn’t over on December 26th. In the historic
calendar of the Church, on December 25th we just begin Christmas. We then enter the twelve days of Christmas.
In much popular understanding, the twelve days of Christmas are the twelve days leading up to Christmas; but in the
historic Christian understanding the twelve days of Christmas begins with Christmas Day and ends with the Epiphany on
January 6th. There is much to gain from this realization. Christmas carries into the New Year. Before we take down the tree
too soon, we should celebrate a little longer! Advent teaches us to wait; Christmas teaches us to linger.
When most people hear The Twelve Days of Christmas they naturally think of the song. This song had its origins as a
teaching tool to instruct converts in the meaning and content of the Christian faith. From 1558 to 1829, Roman Catholics
in England were not able to practice their faith openly, so they passed on their faith by other more innovative methods.
One interpretation of The Twelve Days of Christmas from the era is an example of how they did so:
On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me…The True Love represents God and the “me” who received these
gifts is the Christian. Now try to think about the twelve gifts this way:
1. Partridge in a Pear Tree – Jesus Christ who died on the cross.
2. Two Turtledoves – represent the Old and New Testament.
3. Three French Hens – the three gifts of the Holy Spirit…Faith, Hope, and Charity.
4. Four Calling Birds – the four Gospels which sing the song of salvation through Jesus Christ.
5. Five Golden Rings – are the first five books of the Bible, also called the books of Moses.
6. Six Geese a laying – are the six days of creation as described in the Book of Genesis.
7. Seven Swans a Swimming – are the seven last words of Christ as He hung on the Cross.
8. Eight Maids a Milking – the Beatitudes.
9. Nine Ladies Dancing – are the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit.
10. Ten Lords a Leaping – are the Ten Commandments.
11. Eleven Pipers Piping – are the eleven faithful disciples.
12. Twelve Drummers Drumming – are the twelve points of the Apostle’s Creed.
This interpretation of the famous song calls us to celebrate all “twelve days” of the Christmas season from a distinctly
Christian viewpoint. Perhaps it would be good not to rush the seasons…keep in mind the Christian calendar with its keen
sense of timing and rhythm that tells the great gospel story throughout the year and beckons us to live our days under the
Lordship of Jesus Christ.

The St. Vincent DePaul Society extends their
thanks to everyone that so generously donated
food items for Christmas baskets and
participated in the Christmas Gift Project. These baskets and
gifts were given to the needy in our area.
We would also like to extend a thank you to the
parishioners, participants in An Act of Giving Campaign, the
schools in North Arlington, senior clubs, Women's Club,
Elks, and any other civic organization that has contributed
to the Queen of Peace Food Pantry this year. God bless you
