ST. PAUL’S LUTHERAN CHURCH 548 OLD SWEDE ROAD DOUGLASSVILLE PA 19518 Telephone (610) 385-6616 Fax (610) 385-6690 www.stpaulsdouglassville.com [email protected] The Rev. Gregory W. Frey, Pastor JANUARY, 2015 Mr. Gates doesn’t find church an efficient use of his time. In a way he is right. As society measures efficiency (time is money), it isn’t efficient. In a book on worship titled, A Royal “Waste” of Time, Marva Dawn describes how our culture, and especially our most recent market culture, is training us to think first and foremost only about OUR immediate needs. It’s easier to sell more products to people who already have enough of just about everything if you can convince them that because they are the center of the universe they deserve the newest and best of everything. To such a market self-sacrifice is a mortal enemy, and institutions that don’t reinforce our selfcenteredness are a useless waste of time. Now is the acceptable time… (2 Corinthians 6:2) Need we be reminded that God is the Master of Time, not us? In fact, if you are like me you often feel like a slave to time. The clock is always ticking, and there is never quite enough time left. It seems that we are always running out of time. Time passes so quickly. Deadlines are upon us before we know it and we feel the intense pressure and stress that these fixed moments in time cause us. If only we could in some way s-t-r-e-t-c-h time. But we cannot. The founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates, a man who has amassed around $81 billion in personal wealth, was asked what one thing he wanted. He replied, “More time.” Indeed. We would all like more time. Time is a ruthless taskmaster. Mr. Gates, by the way, has also been quoted as saying attending church is not an efficient use of his time. Personally, I don’t want “more” time. I tend to think the maxim is true that “A task tends to expand to fill the time allotted to it.” Time is like storage space. If there were more time, say an eighth day or a twentyfifth hour, we’d just end up with more “stuff” to fill up that extra time. In a culture never truly satisfied, but always wanting more; more money, faster technology, more this, that and the other thing, it’s not surprising we should want more time. But the fact is, we’re not gonna get it! And we don’t need more time, we need to decide what’s really important in our time and make sure we have time for those important things. From this perspective, which of course, is far more subtly suggested than the above, genuine, selfless worship is a “waste” of time. It is a waste of time because true worship is not centered on us but on God. While church worship surely does meet our most basic need, communion with God and one another, this can only truly be realized when our devotion is taken off ourselves and directed toward God alone. In a way, we lose ourselves for at least one hour a week. Some call this an unnecessary waste of time, others have come to recognize that this time is what gives true meaning and purpose to all the other time and activities of their lives. As we enter the New Year let us take up the cause of Jesus for a new and acceptable time. Let us commit ourselves to “wasting” time together by turning our whole attention and our worship to the creator and sustainer of us all at least once a week. By doing so you will not gain more time, but the time you have will take on greater significance and have deeper meaning. Happy New Year, may God bless your time by his presence in it. --Pastor Frey WORSHIP IN JANUARY January 3 January 4 January 10 January 11 January 17 January 18 January 24 January 25 6:00 P.M. – Holy Communion 8:00 & 10:30 A.M. – Holy Communion 9:15 A.M. – Sunday School 6:00 P.M. – Holy Communion 8:00 & 10:30 A.M. – Worship 9:15 A.M. – Sunday School 6:00 P.M. – Holy Communion 8:00 & 10:30 A.M. – Holy Communion 9:15 A.M. – Sunday School 6:00 P.M. – Holy Communion 8:00 & 10:30 A.M. – Worship 9:15 A.M. – Sunday School FROM THE PARISH RECORDS…………………………………. If you again are making a resolution to read the Bible, the Christian Education Committee has some offerings to help you with your resolution. Every Sunday morning at 9:15 am includes Sunday Church School and Adult Forum along with catechetical instruction. The 3rd Monday from 6-8 pm gather for a light supper and a theme for the evening discussion. If you want a more organized form I have several in my files, just ask. The ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) for several years has been working on a nation-wide campaign Always Being Made New. January 25 will be Always Being Made New Sunday. Our guest for the day will be the Rev. Dr. Michael Bennethum. He will be with us for both worship services and discussion time during the Adult Forum between services. As members of the ELCA we proclaim Christ in many parts of the world not only with our words but with our active participation in the needs of the world. “We are a church that rolls up our sleeves and gets to work.” The campaign includes ways to renew congregations, creating new congregations, finding ways to support disability ministries, financially assist promising leaders responding to God’s call to serve in congregations, expanding work with youth and young adults on their faith journeys, fighting hunger and poverty in the world, continue to fight malaria with bed nets, calling international leaders especially women by increasing education opportunities, and supporting missionaries and young adults in global mission. Pastor Bennethum will have a huge job sharing how we are working together to fulfill the nation-wide campaign as we “do God’s work in Jesus’ name throughout the world”. EVENING BIBLE STUDY – MONDAY, JANUARY 19… CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER…………………………………………………. The Twelve in the Bible, Tradition and Legend… The 12 Disciples of Jesus, for how important they are within Christianity, garnered very little ink in the New Testament. Who were these twelve (thirteen counting Judas) men and what can be known about their lives and ministries from the Bible, Christian tradition and legend. As the season of Epiphany focuses on the early ministry of Jesus, including the calling of the twelve, this is a good time to think about who these guys were and what we can know about and learn from them. Supper at 6:00 followed by the study. We welcome 2015 and wish everyone a happy and healthy year. We would like to thank everyone for supporting the Scholastic Book Fair this holiday season. The proceeds were used to purchase new books for all of the classrooms. We are also very grateful for the generous toy donations that we were able to collect for the Pottstown Head Start Program. WOMAN’S GROUP Tuesday, January 27 @ 7 pm-- Working on program. Watch the bulletin and Eblast for details. LABYRINTH GROUP…Monday, January 12, 10:00 A.M…. Meet in the parking lot or in the church if inclement weather to walk. Travel to Penn State Berks campus labyrinth, if inclement weather we will have a program in the Fellowship Hall. --YTD Giving thru November, 2014 – Offerings Renov. Contr. Hello … for those of you who do not know me, my name is Michele Fisher. You can usually see me at the 10:30 am service. I am a lay reader, cup bearer, children’s sermon and director of VBS. I serve on Church Council and am on the Christian Education Committee. I am looking to start a small group of people … men and women … who would be willing to take care of the coffee hour between services on Sunday mornings. It would be nice if we could get enough volunteers so that all of us would only have to do it about 4 - 6 times per year … maybe less if we get enough volunteers. I have volunteered to try to get a schedule established and set up a rotation plan … for at least the next 6 months. The first Sunday of every month is already being handled by Connie Hunter. So we only need to do the other 3 Sundays. What this entails is to make several pots of coffee – regular and decaf – and the coffee and cream are provided in the kitchen … along with all the other condiments, cups and stirrers. We also ask that you provide a salty snack such as pretzels, crackers, Goldfish, etc. Feel free to bake something or purchase something sweet. If you purchase things, keep the receipt and you will be reimbursed the full amount unless you wish to donate it. We usually try to provide for at least 40 people … unless you are told otherwise. It all needs to be setup by 9:00 am and cleaned up by 10:30 am. Please check your calendars and you can email me at [email protected] or my phone # is 610-468-3668 when you would like to do this. You can do it alone or you can ask a friend or fellow parishioner to do it with you. However you choose is fine. Thank you so much for considering, Michele Fisher CONTRIBUTIONS FOR 2014 ………………………… Contributions to the church for the year 2014 must be received before December 31 in order to be credited to your statement for 2014.
