This past year we initiated an evaluation process to discover how our program impacts
our members’ lives. For many years we have heard anecdotally how Krempels Center is
a life-improving experience for our members — a safe haven where people “get” you
and support you as you
strive to rebuild a new life
of meaning and purpose.
This new initiative —
seeking
quantitative
data to support our
stories and anecdotes
— launched with the
belief that the data
would tell its own story.
And preliminary results
align with that belief: in
stark comparison to the
literature, our members
show a remarkably
positive quality of life in
the areas of basic needs,
psychological
health,
physical health, and
social relationships. We
are looking forward to exploring our results more deeply in the upcoming year, and
sharing the news with our supporters and the brain injury community.
We couldn’t do this great work without you — our friends. You are volunteers, you
are students, you are non-profit partners, you are donors. Our members thank us very
often for what we do. We hear that we are a unique and innovative program. This is
both gratifying to hear and dissatisfying. There are so few programs like Krempels
Center because there is so little funding for programs like ours that fall outside
the medical model. So we are very thankful for your support — your financial and
in-kind giving that allows us to offer this program. We want to commit to you that we
will do our part — through quantifying the results of our program, reaching out to our
greater seacoast community to assure those in need are aware of our services (a new
initiative this upcoming year), and sharing our model — to have the greatest impact
on brain injury survivors. You will continue to hear stories of triumph — such as the
ones you will read in these pages — and you will begin to hear about our desire to
make a greater impact on the local, regional, and national brain injury community.

Back to Independence
Three years ago the one thing that provided Robin Whittaker with a
feeling of exhilaration and freedom was the very same thing that took it
all away. Snowboarding.
She was a successful businesswoman, running the Isles of Shoals
Steamship Co., and the annual two-week snowboarding vacation was a
tradition before the start of the busy tourist season. “That amazing sense
of freedom and independence -- key characteristics of my spirit -- I’d
always had disappeared after my accident. I was stuck at home.”
But not for long. Robin’s children first took her to Krempels in a wheelchair
but once she mastered walking with a cane and could be dropped off
she felt independence and a sense of freedom return. “Krempels Center
represents for me much needed independence, and a relief for my kids
because they knew it was a safe place.”
Robin’s growth and independence didn’t stop there. She is a compelling
speaker on brain injury, commanding the attention of college students
on the topic and inspiring several of the future occupational therapists
to choose Krempels Center as their internship site as a result. She walks
in the organization’s 5K fundraiser, and was one of the first to sign up
for the inaugural adaptive bike ride that is an important part of the
Krempels King of the Road Challenge.

And now she can add published writer to her resume. A writing workshop
at Krempels inspired her essay “The Nature of My Motivation” about the
beauty of the morning on the day of her snowboarding accident. It was
one of 101 pieces chosen for Chicken Soup for the Soul: Recovering
from Traumatic Brain Injuries.

There is nothing “dry” about our financials. Each dollar — in kind or cash —
contributed to Krempels Center comes from a caring individual or group of individuals. Our students and community volunteers commit significantly to supporting
our program — and help us to stay financially “lean.” Our members, when they
are able, contribute $5 or $500 each month to participate in this life-enhancing
experience. And our donors — through an annual or multi-year gift, participation
in the Runner’s Alley Red Hook Memorial Road Race or the Krempels King of the
Road Challenge, or a community or corporate grant — take the time to give in
a way that is meaningful to them — aligning our services with their values and

Redefining Support
Life is very different than it was three years ago for Tracy Halkovitch but
staying in bed is never an option.
“I can’t afford to get angry or resentful. It’s not sad. It’s unfortunate and
it’s not the way things were supposed to be – me changing light bulbs,
doing the taxes, painting the kitchen, rewiring the dog fence after it
gets hit by lightning – but we can joke about it and that’s what keeps
us going.”
‘It’ is her husband Bill’s diagnosis of MELAS syndrome, a very rare, fatal
disease with no treatment and no cure. An engineer, he had what they
later learned was his first massive stroke while driving home from a
business trip. The diagnosis came after the third stroke, all before he
was 50. But finally having a diagnosis helped.
And Krempels Center has too. Bill has become more social and the
program has provided him with a routine, something that was very hard
for him to lose when he could no longer work or drive. It also reduced his
dependency on Tracy and gave him something that’s his own. “That’s
been huge. I wish there was a Krempels Center on every corner.” Bill
loves education, learning everything new he can about his iPad, talking
sports, and bird watching. He and Tracy have worked hard to keep the
diagnosis from altering their son Will’s life. He is currently a sophomore
at the University of New Hampshire studying psychology.
Krempels has also provided Tracy with support, and she is eager to see
a second support group added, one that focuses on spousal caregiving.
“A mother’s love is a mother’s love. It’s unconditional. But your spouse
is your partner, your best friend. That is a very different loss.” She and
Bill have become good friends with another couple at Krempels, and
they often go out together socially. “Caregivers really are the forgotten
ones and knowing someone understands is good for Bill and it’s good
for me.”

Compelled to Help
Daniel Fraser was no different than a lot of teenagers. A bit of a rebel,
struggling to find his place in the world. It wasn’t in high school and it
wasn’t in a job training program. He dropped out of both but had found
his passion — boxing. It helped him manage stress and provided focus.
Just days from his first big match as an amateur boxer after three solid
months of full-time training, Daniel was 18 and in the best shape of his
life. He was also a newly licensed driver, and when his brother lent him
the car one January night everything changed in an instant.
“I regret how everything impacted my family. My family has taken a big
hit. They just didn’t understand me and our relationships changed. I
want to help families of survivors because I know how important family
support is.”
Daniel wouldn’t be stepping into the boxing ring. Instead he spent two
and a half weeks on life support in a Boston hospital followed by two
months in a rehabilitation hospital. He found Krempels Center two years
later.
“I was lonely. I came home from rehab with high hopes. I had no clue it
was going to be so hard. My friends stopped calling. I couldn’t do the
things I could before. Krempels is more than the program. It’s welcoming.
You feel like you’re in a place where you can open up because everyone
can relate. It’s a place where you’re part of a community.”

Life continues to be a struggle, but Daniel keeps moving forward. He
has reconnected spiritually with his old church and at Krempels he has
found a great outlet for his energy in sports activities, for sharing his
story in the writing group and therapy in music, particularly a recent
program with ukuleles. He talks about taking college classes, doing
peer-to-peer support, maybe a job helping animals or in a rehabilitation
facility. So many ideas because he is compelled to help others. “It’s
what I’m meant to do.”
“I’ve discovered what I can do and how I can
help others. It’s what I’m meant to do.”

Krempels Center is fortunate to be involved with two magical events every
year: the Runner’s Alley/Redhook Memorial 5K, and the Krempels King of the
Road Challenge. One is a run and the other a bike ride, both help to raise a
tremendous amount of money for Krempels Center. Both are led by amazing
people dedicated to helping our program thrive. Krempels Center members
are involved in everything from biking, walking, raising money, volunteering,
and bringing friends and family to these two events. Rich in resources and
goodwill, these events align perfectly with the mission of Krempels Center. All
involved help to improve the lives of people surviving brain injury.

Founder
Founder David Krempels survived a traumatic car accident resulting in a brain
injury in 1995. Since then, he has dedicated his life, time and resources in support
of other brain injury survivors and their families.

Krempels Center can serve more than 100 brain injury survivors and their families
