Hanes has generated a lot of

Opposing perfect games
MIKE GODARD
Strikes n' Strokes editor
Greg Doak and Kyle Boros were matching strikes for strikes in the
Wednesday night Central League at Stardust Lanes.
Bowling against each others, both bowlers carried their perfect
game bids into the final frame.
“I just wanted to make sure I got the ball off my hand clean,” said
Doak, who was bowling second for his team. “I had one or two
balls early in the game that came up light but carried. In the 10th
they were all there. I had to keep up with the other team (strike for
strike). You don't see that very often (opposing 300 games in the
same game).
It was Doak's fourth perfect game, who also had one in the same
league last March.
For Boros, it was his first certified perfect game.
“I wanted to make sure not to pull the ball in the 10th frame,”
Boros said. “The first ball was good but I sure missed on the second
ball . . . about eight boards. (that ball carried for his 11th straight).
The last ball was right there.
“That was a lot of fun,” he added. “He (Doak) was bowling second and I was bowling third,” he added. “I'm always rooting for the
other guy to do well. I was watching him the whole time.”
Boros was cleaning out his closet a couple of weeks ago.
“I was looking to recycle some of my equipment,” he said. “I
pulled out my Emerald (Green Vibe) and used it for about three
weeks. I don't think that I am going to recycle it anytime soon.” ♦

Nick Stockford put his bowling
on the back burner for
the 2014-15 bowling
season. When Stockford returned to bowling in a substitute role
on the Tuesday night
Metal Casting League
at State Lanes, he
burned the lanes with a
749 series.
Not bad for the 198 average
right-hander, who hadn't rolled
a bowling ball in at least six
months.
“I hadn't bowled since the end
of our Wednesday night Merchants Industrial League,” Stockford said. “I also didn't bowl dur-
ing the summer at all.
“We have a boat and normally
we focused on me bowling during
the winter, and the kids during the
summer,” he added. “I
really wasn't abandoning my fun.
“It's my boat, too,”
he laughed. “I have fun
with it. Summer is a
great time to spend time
with the family.”
Stockford
stepped
onto the lanes a week
after his 749 series and rolled
games of 268, 190 and 202.
“Our team moved from Wednesdays to Tuesdays,” he said.
“But, I am only going to sub
once in a while. These two weeks
were like I never left the lanes. It
really felt great to bowl again.” ♦

Golden Opportunity Golden
Passbook
DAVE GEHRING
Strikes n' Strokes
Golf course discounts come in several shapes and sizes, and golfers appreciate them all. One somewhat hidden gem is the Golden Passbook to
Michigan Golf put out by the Michigan Golf Course Owners Association
(MGCOA).
The Golden Passbook allows public play golfers to experience a wide
variety of quality courses at greatly
reduced rates.
Kate Moore, Executive Director of
MGCOA, states that “It’s like joining a golf club, but having about 85
different golf courses that you can
play”!
There are three Golden Passbooks
available; East, West and North, so
depending on your location and desires, you can pick the books that
work for you.
New this year is the Platinum Passbook which offers rounds of golf absolutely “free” with almost no time
restrictions! Coupons are good from
2 to 4 players, depending upon the
golf course.
Each year the Golden Passbook
(and now the Platinum Passbook) has
grown and adjusted to the needs of its
users.
In 2015 you can purchase one or
more of these different books with
more savings depending upon how
many different books you get. This
is all available at even lower prices
from 2014.
They make great gifts for the devoted golfer. For anyone who might
be interested, don't hesitate, as they
only print 200 of each book (150 of
the Platinum Book). Just check their
website at www.mgcoa.org or call
1.800.860.8575.
The Michigan Golf Course Owners
Association uses proceeds from the
books to be “The Voice of Michigan's
Golf Business”, a 2.2 billion dollar
industry.
The golf courses donate the greatly
discounted rounds to MGCOA so
that they can be an advocate for their
industry. This starts with government regulations and fees, along with
fighting unfair legislation.
They also provide their members
with operating solutions, educational
seminars, communications, insurances and much more. Many “Corporate
Members” also take advantage of the
MGCOA and its many benefits.
They are a non-profit organization
which originated in the mid-1970s. ♦
NEW FOR 2015
In addition to the Golden Passbook, we are now
offering the Platinum Passbook to Michigan Golf.
The Platinum Passbook has nearly 30 golf courses
around the State where golf is TOTALLY FREE. There
is no cart fee and limited restrictions for 2 or in some
cases 4 players. The Golden Passbook again this year
will come in 3 separate regions; North, East and West.
There are lower service/cart fees and the restrictions
have been limited. There is weekend play in both the
Golden and Platinum Passbooks which is a value for
both weekly and weekend golfers alike. We will only
be selling 150 of each book, so get you order in today!

Flint area bowler developed a 'back-up' plan to his delivery
MIKE GODARD
Strikes n' Strokes editor
Talk about creativity.
What started out as way to pick
up the 10- pin more consistently,
has now become a part of Jon DeMott’s game.
DeMott throws a back-up with
power and accuracy that has him
averaging in the high 220s at
Richfield Bowl and high 2-teens
at Grand Blanc Bowl.
He also has a natural righthanded delivery that he can throw
and not lose any pins off his average.
And, because he uses the same
hand for each type of delivery, it
is legal.
“I was having trouble with the
10-pin, so I tried throwing the
back-up at it more,” he said.
“That was about seven or eight
years ago. After playing with it
a little, I started to find out that I
could score with it.
“Sometimes, bowlers get upset
about it,” he added. “But I find it
to be an advantage at times.”
Recently, while bowling in a
Thanksgiving eve tournament,
DeMott found that bowling on
the “burn” from the “left” was
advantageous for him. He was
able to qualify for the elimination round but lost a close match
in the first game.
“If I have no look from the
left side of the head pin,” he
said. “I’m not afraid to make the
switch. It also helps me on pins
on either side of the lane. And,
with the splits, I can play the an-
League openings available

FROM COVER STEPEHN Kearsley bowler gets his first 800 series
last 29 or 30 balls, once he found
the line.
His two 300 games doubled his
total to four in his young career.
With the high school season just
started, Stephen is bowling with
the Flint Kearsley team. He is a
junior this year and was a member
of last year's Conference, Regional and State Championship team.
“It was a really cool experience
last year,” he said. “We lost our
first match (in early December)
but it was a close one. We only
lost one player from last year's
team. We are looking forward to
another good season.”
Stephen, 16, has developed a
very high backswing.
“I bowled in a league with Andrew Anderson,” he said. “He was
kind of like my idol. I used to bowl
very slow (speed). That (height of
swing) gave me more power in my
swing.”
While Stephen is a on a good
start to this season, he has a couple
of goals.
“I want to stay consistent,” he
said. “And, I want to have a good
attitude. Sometimes, things get
into my head real quick and that
messes up my game.” ♦

Short stint on the job turned into a career
MIKE GODARD

Sue Wakeman has been a fixture at Rollaway Lanes in Davison for nearly 35 years. She started as a part-time bartender.
“I had always wanted to try my
hand at bartending,” she said. “But
my husband didn't want me to for
obvious reasons. But they needed
a bartender and since it was at the
center (Rollaway Lanes), my husband was okay with it.
“I think he thought it was only
going to be to the end of the season,” Wakeman added. “But it
wasn't, so here I am.”
Wakeman, 75, who still tends
bar two nights per week, spends
most of her hours working
with the Rollaway Lanes youth
leagues.
“I run the junior program three
days per week,” said Wakeman,
who took over the junior program a couple of years ago. She
runs the Tuesday, Wednesday and
“I always liked bowling,” she to be able to carry this on. Even
added. “My father, Charles Zeil- though I'm not a good bowler, I
inger, did a lot for the Franken- have always loved to bowl.

the Saturday morning programs.
On Friday, Wakeman gets the junior program started and lets the
“kids” take it over.
The Rollaway Lanes junior program is strong.
Tuesdays is a small squad with
10 kids but Wednesdays has a
large squad with 48 in number.
Friday has 24 youth bowlers, with
30 on Saturday.
There are no double-ups this
year bowling on two or more different days.
The weekday programs are
right after school and the masses
arrive after a short walk from the
schools to the lanes.
