Holy Families
Well, Merry Christmas—Day 4! Indeed, having left behind the “Holiday Season”,
we are now full into the Holy Season of Christmas! I may even start my Christmas
cards this week. :-)
By tradition, the first Sunday after Christmas celebrates the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. There are lots of options for the readings today and as you can see, the Church uses them not
only to remind us of the qualities of the Holy Family, but also to help us to become “holy families”
living in a world, that often admires, but does not always understand what we are all about.
The first thing we learn is that faith is the bedrock on which a family is built. Joseph and Mary are
pious Jews and they take their faith seriously. No surprise then that the first recorded act of the Holy
Family after the events surrounding Jesus’ birth is to be faithful to God by dedicating him in accordance with the Law of Moses. Of course, it never seems to go according to plan for Jesus, Mary and
Joseph. It is in the temple that they encounter Simeon and the prophetess Anna. Not your normal
dedication in the temple, to be sure.
Thus, the second thing that a holy family needs is flexibility and an openness to the will of God.
We make a lot of plans in life, for ourselves and for our children. But just as often as not, things
don’t always go according to plan. Life intervenes, sometimes in subtle and sometimes in jarring
ways. But a family of disciples learns over time that God uses the unexpected, the hilarious, and yes,
the tragic to bring out the best qualities latent in every family member. Flexibility and an openness to
God’s will built on the trust that comes from faith is essential. Of course, this assumes that they are
listening.
Which brings us to the third quality that makes a family holy. As Paul intimates, there needs to be
a certain order to the life of the family. First, roles need to be defined so family members know what
to expect. Paul described what worked in his day. In the same way, each modern couple needs to
figure out what works in their situation. There also needs to be order to the day. Structure is good for
discipleship. There needs to be an established time and place for family prayer, for essential work
(chores), and for recreation. Holiness is too important to be left to chance.
As we see in Scripture, the Holy Family was a lot like every family, because every family is
called to be holy.
Merry Christmas!

Pilgrimage to Italy
Your Invitation
My Dear Friends in Christ, I am delighted to be able to share with you this "Pilgrimage of Faith" to Rome, Assisi and Subiaco. On this pil‐
grimage, we will encounter the ancient world in which the Church found itself in first century Rome. We will visit the tombs of Sts. Peter and Paul and many other Chris‐
an martyrs. In Assisi, we will pray in the places that led St. Francis and St. Clare to their lives of singular devo‐
on to Christ. Finally, in Subiaco, we will experience the place where St. Benedict entered into the eremi cal life before becoming the Father of Western monas cism. I am confident that this pilgrimage will bless you in many ways and help you enter into a deeper communion with Christ and with these saints who are so much a part of our Catholic heritage. I look forward to making this pilgrimage with you. In Christ, Fr. Leo Walsh Registration forms are in the back of church!
