In October, I was privileged to go with Bishop Larry Silva and several others on pilgrimage to the Kaluapapa on the island of Moloka’i in Hawaii. The first thing that surprised me was that one cannot simply go to Kaluapapa. You have to be invited. The reason for this becomes evident when you get there. Unbeknownst to many, there are still nine surviving members of the leper colony that is still there to this day. Most of them are in there 80’s but the youngest is 72 years old. These are the folks who arrived before the policy of mandatory isolation was ended in 1969, which would have put them in their 20’s and 30’s when they arrived. Kaluapapa is their home. And while Hansen’s disease can now be controlled, they have chosen to stay there. For the past 50 or so years, it is the only home they have known. I had originally decided to go to see the place where Sts. Damien deVeuster and Marianne Cope had lived, worked and died. What I did not expect was how I would be affected when first I came face to face with those who had the disease. They were singing. It was in the church of St. Philomena where St. Damien had begun his ministry in 1873. Appropriately, we were celebrating Mass and they were the choir. There were three women in their 80’s. Incidentally, they were quite good. Unfortunately, they had other obligations right after Mass and so I did not get to meet them. It was not until later, when we went to the other side of the peninsula where the present day settlement is, that I met “Boogie”, the youngest patient there. It was in the bookstore as we were getting ready to depart. Boogie was standing at the counter. Like the other patients, he still bore the marks of the disease that left him deformed before treatment became widely available. He solidly build and about 5’8”. He was bald as an egg and had a gravelly voice that laughed and joked as he asked where we were from. His enthusiasm was infectious. We chatted a bit and then he looked at my purchases, a biography of each saint, and said, “Yeah, those are the best ones.” Then he looked me in the eye and said, “Hey, are you a priest?” “Absolutely,” I replied. “Say, could I get a blessing?” “Sure!” I said, and gave him my best while stretching out my hand and placing it firmly on his bald head. When I was finished, he said, “Thanks, Father!” and vigorously shook my hand. As we departed, I thought about how much things had changed in the last 50 years. With the development of sulphone-based medications, Hansen’s disease is no longer the horrifying phenomenon that it once was. I didn’t think twice about touching a “leper” because lepers in the sense that the word is used in scripture simply don’t exist in modern society. There is no need for those with Hansen’s disease to cry out “Unclean! Unclean!” When Jesus touched the leper, he himself became unclean physically and ritually. He could no longer enter the Temple area. When the man who was healed publicized the event, the tables were turned and Jesus became the outcast and could no longer move about freely. We have other outcasts now. But Jesus still reaches out to touch them. Let us pray that we have the grace to let him use our hands to do so. Listen to Fr. The Office of EVANGELIZATION CATECHESIS Bob McMORROW, Director Oriele JONES, Youth Ministry Dr. Bob SCHIHL, Adult Ministry 273-15572 [email protected] 273-1541 [email protected] EVANGELIZATION Having a knowing and loving relationship with Jesus from His Word - the Bible “ . . . And the Word was God.” (John 1:1) ROLE OF THE EUCHARIST Eucharist – the Center of the Evangelized Life. The evangelized Catholic respects the SACRED ENVIRONMENT of the Church and people who are there to spend time with Jesus in silence and prayer. Outside of the Mass, we center on the Tabernacle and Jesus’ Presence. SILENCE is the first and honored sign of respect acknowledging the Presence of Jesus. As evangelized believers we understand what Christ’ Presence means. He is present! This sacred space is NOT a place for profane conversation; in fact no conversation should be tolerated at all unless necessary. We all wish and need to be able to find a place of solitude from the world. Where else can we find such an atmosphere? This space is a place of retreat and quiet. 273-1541 [email protected] CATECHESIS Catechesis echoes the Word of God from the Bible in the teachings of the Church. “He who hears you, hears Me.” (Luke 10:16) CONFRATERNITY OF CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE (CCD) FAMILY FAITH CATECHESIS Who: Kindergarten thru eighth grade and their parents.
