Day after day, Cynthia (Sidse Babett Knudsen) and Evelyn (Chiara D’Anna) act out a simple yet provocative ritual that ends with Evelyn’s punishment and pleasure. Cynthia is around ten years older than Evelyn. Her cold and unscrupulous conduct belies her elegance, yet Evelyn tolerates the ill treatment. Cynthia subjects Evelyn to increasingly humiliating treatment. The tasks she has to perform become increasingly intimate, bordering on degrading, only she never protests. Eventually, it becomes apparent that the two women are engaged in a ritual of role-play involving dominance and subservience. As Cynthia yearns for a more conventional relationship, Evelyn’s obsession with erotic spells quickly becomes an addiction that may push the relationship to a breaking point. From Peter Strickland, the award-winning writer and director of BERBERIAN SOUND STUDIO and KATALIN VARGA. (UK, 2014) “Another vampire movie? Yes, but Ana Lily Amirpour’s debut feature…demonstrates that there is still room for invention in this ancient and ubiquitous genre. Her vampire is a solitary walker in a sad world populated by pimps, drug addicts, a possibly decent guy and a cat that might be searching for Llewyn Davis. Shooting in black and white in a Los Angeles that looks like Iran, as imagined by a Czech New Wave renegade, Ms. Amirpour has made a rock ’n’ roll Persian feminist fable in which the character evoked in the title, an emblem of female vulnerability, is also an agent of revenge. The film’s anger is balanced by a Jim Jarmusch-like cool and by a disarmingly innocent outlaw romanticism.” —A. O. Scott, THE NEW YORK TIMES “This super-stylish and spellbinding Persian take on the vampire genre doubles as a compact metaphor for the current state of Iran. Ana Lily Amirpour’s debut feature guides us on a dreamlike walk on the wild side, into the nocturnal and sparsely populated underworld of ‘Bad City,’ an Iran of the mind that nevertheless rings true. In a cool and brooding scenario that involves just a handful of characters, an alluring female vampire stalks potential victims with a judgmental eye—but isn’t immune to romantic desire when it presents itself in the form of a young hunk who’s looking for a way out of his dead-end existence. With to-die-for high-contrast black-and-white cinematography and a sexy cast that oozes charisma, horror has seldom seemed so hot.”—NEW DIRECTORS/NEW FILMS www.shorts.tv/theoscarshorts www.ifcfilms.com films.vice.com/a-girl-walks-home Song of the Sea What We Do in the Shadows Zero Motivation STARTS FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 6 • ONE WEEK STARTS FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 20 • ONE WEEK STARTS FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 27 • ONE WEEK WINNER! WINNER! PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD (MIDNIGHT MADNESS) TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL “Dazzling! A marvel to behold!”—Peter Debruge, VARIETY “Magical! Visually rapturous!”—Mark Adams, SCREEN DAILY “Wondrous! Delightful!”—Boyd van Hoeij, THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER “A timeless delight for all ages!”—Todd Brown, TWITCH “Stunning! Song of the Sea should remind everyone why animation, when done as flawlessly as it is here, is such an incredible medium.”—Carlos Aguilar, INDIEWIRE From Tomm Moore, the Academy Award-nominated director of THE SECRET OF KELLS, comes a beautiful new adventure rooted in Irish folklore. SONG OF THE SEA tells the story of Ben and his little sister Saoirse—the last Seal-child—who embark on a fantastic journey across a fading world of ancient legend and magic in an attempt to return to their home by the sea. The animated film takes inspiration from the mythological Selkies, who live as seals in the sea but become humans on land. Features the voices of legendary Irish performers Brendan Gleeson and Fionnula Flanagan, as well as music by composer Bruno Coulais (CORALINE) and Irish band Kíla, both of whom previously collaborated on THE SECRET OF KELLS. (Ireland/Luxembourg/Belgium/France/Denmark, 2014) www.songoftheseafilm.com BEST NARRATIVE FEATURE “One of the flat-out funniest films in ages.”—Mark Olsen, LOS ANGELES TIMES HHHHH! “The best comedy of the year. It’s brilliant, bizarre and very funny.” —Peter Bradshaw, THE GUARDIAN “Full of unexpected twists and turns...In this militaristic Office Space, the mayhem can only escalate.”—Ronnie Scheib, VARIETY “An absorbing office saga and diverting dark comedy”—Rodrigo Perez, THE PLAYLIST The creators of HBO’s hit series “Flight of the Conchords,” Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, co-write, co-direct and co-star in this hilarious comedy in which an endearingly unhip quartet of vampires squabble over household chores, struggle to keep up with the latest trends, antagonize the local werewolves and deal with the rigors of living on a very, very strict diet. Flatmates Viago, Deacon and Vladislav are just trying to get by in modern society; from paying rent and sticking to the housework roster to trying to get invited into nightclubs, they’re just like anyone else—except they’re immortal and must feast on human blood. When their 8,000-year-old flatmate Petyr turns 20-something human hipster Nick into a vampire, the guys must teach him the ropes and guide him through his new found eternal life. And in return they are forced to learn a thing or two about modern society, fashions, technology and the internet. But it’s the introduction of Nick’s human friend, Stu, that really changes the vampires’ lives and attitudes. When Stu’s life is threatened, the vamps show us that maybe humans are worth fighting for, and that even though your heart may be cold and dead, it doesn’t mean you can’t feel anything. (New Zealand, 2014) ZERO MOTIVATION is a unique, sharply observed, sometimes dark and often hilarious portrait of everyday life for a unit of young female soldiers in a remote Israeli desert outpost. Playing out like M*A*S*H meets “Orange Is the New Black,” writer/director Talya Lavie’s brilliant debut details the power struggles of three women with different agendas and very little to do. Pencil-pushers in the Human Resources Office, best friends Zohar (Dana Ivgy) and Daffi (Nelly Tagar) spend their time playing video games, singing pop songs, jousting with stationery and dreaming of Tel Aviv. The indolent twosome are watched over by their aspiring senior officer, Rama (Shani Klein), who dreams of a higher position and a significant military career, but with a platoon of unskilled, idle female soldiers without any drive under her charge, her ambitions for promotion are constantly thwarted. With shifts of tone that go from slapstick to satiric to horrifying with fluid ease, and with a superb supporting cast of characters, ZERO MOTIVATION is destined to be one of the most talked about films of the year. Winner of the Best Narrative Feature Award at the Tribeca Film Festival, and 6 Israeli Academy Awards, including Best Director, Screenplay and Actress (Ivgy). Both a hell of a lot of fun and consistently intellectually and emotionally rewarding… One of the best films I’ve seen this year.”—Jason Gorber, TWITCH “A full-on modern spaghetti western from former Dogme director Kristian Levring.” —Ed Frankl, CINEVUE “One of the slickest, most entertaining entries in recent memory…This film rocks!” —Jake Howell, MOVIE CITY NEWS From first rehearsal to world premiere, BALLET 422 takes us backstage at New York City Ballet as Justin Peck, a young up-and-coming choreographer, crafts a new work. BALLET 422 illuminates the process behind the creation of a single ballet within the ongoing cycle of work at one of the world’s great ballet companies. New York City Ballet, under the artistic direction of Peter Martins, boasts a roster of more than 90 elite dancers and a repertory of works by many of the greatest choreographers in the history of the art form. When 25-year-old NYCB corps de ballet dancer Peck begins to emerge as a promising young choreographer, he is commissioned to create a new ballet for the Company’s 2013 Winter Season. With unprecedented access to an elite world, the film follows Peck as he collaborates with musicians, lighting designers, costume designers and his fellow dancers to create Paz de la Jolla, NYCB’s 422nd new ballet. BALLET 422 is an unembellished vérité portrait of a process that has never before been documented at New York City Ballet in its entirety. Directed by Jody Lee Lipes. (USA, 2015) The mighty Mads Mikkelsen (CASINO ROYALE, THE HUNT, “Hannibal”) unleashes a maelstrom of bloodshed in 1870s Wild West America in this white-knuckle tale of revenge. When he lays waste to the scoundrels who killed his wife and son, a Danish ex-soldier (Mikkelsen) incurs the wrath of a sadistic gang leader hell-bent on hunting him down. Exploding with eye-popping action, dazzlingly dramatic frontier landscapes and a smoldering performance by Eva Green (CASINO ROYALE, 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE, “Penny Dreadful”), THE SALVATION is a rip-roaring, blood-spattered saga of sin and redemption. Also starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Eric Cantona, Douglas Henshall and Jonathan Pryce. Directed and co-written by Kristian Levring (THE INTENDED, THE KING IS ALIVE). SHE’S BEAUTIFUL takes us from the founding of NOW (National Organization for Women), when ladies wore hats and gloves, to the emergence of more radical factions of women’s liberation; from intellectuals like Kate Millett to the street theatrics of WITCH (Women’s International Conspiracy from Hell!). Remarkably, there has never been a theatrical documentary about the astonishing early days of women’s liberation. SHE’S BEAUTIFUL aims not to romanticize the early movement, but to dramatize it in its exhilarating, quarrelsome, sometimes heart-wrenching glory. The film does not shy away from the controversies over race, sexual identity and leadership that arose in the women’s movement. It captures the spirit of the time—thrilling, scandalous and often hilarious. Featuring Rita Mae Brown, Susan Brownmiller, Ellen Willis, Eleanor Holmes Norton, Alix Kates Shulman and Fran Beal.
