For the most part, romantic comedies have been dumbed d ow n t o Movie review PG-13 fluff ‘Going the pieces: distance’ pop-songsturned1/2 movies out of four stars that dish up love as nothing more than a happy ending with a few cliché complications along the way. Love is not what most romantic comedies depict, which is why the R-rated “Going the Distance” comes as such an inspired breath of fresh air. Love is hard, brutal at times. Timing and circumstance are two of the strongest contributing factors as to whether a relationship will prove successful. “Going the Distance” is written with a focus on just this type of a relationship; in this case, a long-distance romance between aspiring journalism student Erin (Drew Barrymore) and music producer Garrett (Justin Long). The movie doesn’t beat around the bush in asserting the difficulty of such a bond. It highlights a balance between budding love and crippling circumstance with such honesty that we can root for Garrett and Erin, and sympathize, too. These are characters so lovable and veraciously designed that their love seems real; Barrymore and Long are flawless lovers in a romance filled with flaws. The film is driven by laughter and love, more often than not combined. When Erin and Garrett first meet and bond through a night of beer, bar trivia, and discussing the genius of Tom Cruise’s “Top Gun,” their chemistry glows. For a minute, I almost forgot I was witnessing a performance. Erin is only in New York City for six more weeks after initially meeting Garrett, having to return to California to complete grad school. The weeks pass and as their relationship blossoms into love, they both decide upon their good-byes that the distance between them shouldn’t prevent them from being together. Cue the complications: They rarely see each other, airfare is expensive, and the time difference and conflicting work schedules limit contact to a minimum. Erin’s sister (a lovely Christina Applegate) worries about her, while Garrett’s friends Dan (Charlie Day of “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia”) and Box (Jason Sudeikis) realize their Please see review, Page 14 tour, which will wrap up in time for her to head out on tour with her mother, Naomi. The Immigrant City again hosts its Labor Day weekend ethnic festivals: the 87th Feast of Three Saints at Holy Rosary Church at Corpus Christi Parish and the 38th Mahrajan over at St. Anthony Maronite Catholic Church. The Feast started in the 1920s, when Sicilian immigrants began to recreate the celebrations they grew up with in the old country. The three saints in question are brothers Alfio, Cirino and Filadelfo, who died rather than renounce their faith more than 1,700 years ago. Today the event combines religious and cultural activities in a big party atmosphere, featuring food, rides , music and more. Events take place on Common Street, primarily between Jackson and Union streets. What it’s about: The feast celebrates the martyrdom of brothers, who faced torture and death in third-century Sicily, rather than deny their faith. Don’t miss: “American Idol” contestant Ayla Brown in concert Friday night; the Torchlight Parade on Saturday, when the formerly mildmannered march to the intersection of Newbury and Common streets, shouting “con vera fede” (with the true faith) and “viva St. Alfio” (long live St. Alfio); and standing with crowds when statues of the saints are marched into the streets by about two dozen men for a parade at 3 p.m. Sunday featuring cheers and showers of money and confetti. What’s worth the 5 extra pounds: Heck, at this festival, plan to gain 10. There will be crispellis, a cross between a doughnut and fried dough, made plain or filled with ricotta and anchovies (those with a sweet tooth can add powdered sugar); breaded and deep-fried rice balls covered in sauce; authentic Italian sausage smothered in peppers and onions on (what else) Italian bread; roasted chestnuts; Italian ices; and delectable cannolis, biscotti and other treats from the local Italian bakeries. Featured performers will include Bread and Puppet, a politically radical puppet theater company, Grupo Fantasia, and Bylli Crayone, a native of Lawrence, featuring Samantha Fox and debuting their new hit song, “London to Lawtown.” “We have a food court of vendors who have Caribbean and Middle Eastern food and BBQ,” Beauchesne said. “It’s festive and happy. Everyone is out for a good time. It’s a very family friendly atmosphere. Families can bring a blanket or chair for a lot of the performances.” Beauchesne said the festival marks a landmark event in American labor history. “It included women mill workers, and strikers brought attention to issues like child labor,” he said. “It is known for the use of song by the strikers as a means to bolster their spirits. Judd combines captivating, superstar talent with down-toearth performances, which is fitting for a show at the gorgeous, yet intimate, Music Hall. “I’m thinking that Wynonna is really going to connect with the audiences. She’s a real people person. She changes her show; she doesn’t just play a set list of songs,” Lynch promises. “She’s spontaneous, very much into audience interaction, so I think this is going to be a perfect place to see her because the Music Hall is so intimate and the connection that the performers feel with the audience is palpable.” Lynch says “Intimately Yours” is getting really popular with artists who normally play larger venues, because of The Music Hall’s beauty, history, acoustics, and location. Later this fall, the series will feature The Indigo Girls, Art Garfunkel, Chris Isaak, and other artists. “This series is what it’s titled: ‘Intimately Yours,’” says Lynch. “It’s a real opportunity to see performers that you might normally According to Beauchense the festival also represents Lawrence’s diversity, then and now. “We have something called L aw r e n c e H i s t o r y L ive , ” Beauchesne said. “It is a forum for labor history and contemporary labor issues, as well.” Though this year’s festival hasn’t yet happened, Beauchesne already is thinking about a future festival and how to make it bigger. “We are two years away from the 100th anniversary of the Bread and Roses Strike,” Beauchesne said. “We, along with other organizations, are well into the process of planning a major celebration for a scaled up 2012 festival.” Continued from Page 13 decided to scale back on the big Friday night concert this year, to offer more entertainment in the main parts of the feast over the weekend.
