Wild weekend at Winnekenni Castle
Winnekenni Castle hosts two great events this weekend.
Wild Animal Kingdom Day on Sunday at 1 p.m. allows visitors
to get acquainted with reptiles and furry friends, followed by
live owl presentation. Admission is free for children and $5 for
adults. At 2 p.m. Monday, the venue hosts a free blues concert

film, yet equally the genre that
frustrates me most with what it
typically has to offer.
For the most part, romantic
comedies have been dumbed

nothing more than a happy ending with a few cliché complications along the way. Love is not
what most romantic comedies
depict, which is why the R-rated
“Going the Distance” comes as
such an inspired breath of fresh
air.
Love is hard, brutal at times.
Timing and circumstance are two
of the strongest contributing factors as to whether a relationship
will prove successful. “Going
the Distance” is written with a
focus on just this type of a relationship; in this case, a long-distance romance between aspiring
journalism student Erin (Drew
Barrymore) and music producer
Garrett (Justin Long).
The movie doesn’t beat around
the bush in asserting the difficulty of such a bond. It highlights
a balance between budding love
and crippling circumstance with
such honesty that we can root
for Garrett and Erin, and sympathize, too.
These are characters so lovable
and veraciously designed that
their love seems real; Barrymore
and Long are flawless lovers in a
romance filled with flaws.
The film is driven by laughter
and love, more often than not
combined. When Erin and Garrett first meet and bond through
a night of beer, bar trivia, and
discussing the genius of Tom
Cruise’s “Top Gun,” their chemistry glows. For a minute, I
almost forgot I was witnessing a
performance.
Erin is only in New York City
for six more weeks after initially meeting Garrett, having to
return to California to complete
grad school.
The weeks pass and as their
relationship blossoms into love,
they both decide upon their
good-byes that the distance
between them shouldn’t prevent
them from being together. Cue
the complications: They rarely
see each other, airfare is expensive, and the time difference and
conflicting work schedules limit
contact to a minimum.

The Immigrant City again
hosts its Labor Day weekend
ethnic festivals: the 87th Feast
of Three Saints at Holy Rosary
Church at Corpus Christi Parish and the 38th Mahrajan
over at St. Anthony Maronite
Catholic Church.
The Feast started in the
1920s, when Sicilian immigrants began to recreate the
celebrations they grew up with
in the old country.
The three saints in question are brothers Alfio, Cirino
and Filadelfo, who died rather
than renounce their faith more
than 1,700 years ago. Today
the event combines religious
and cultural activities in a big
party atmosphere, featuring
food, rides , music and more.

and debuting their new hit song,
“London to Lawtown.”
“We have a food court of
vendors who have Caribbean and
Middle Eastern food and BBQ,”
Beauchesne said. “It’s festive and
happy. Everyone is out for a good
time. It’s a very family friendly
atmosphere. Families can bring
a blanket or chair for a lot of the
performances.”
Beauchesne said the festival marks a landmark event in
American labor history.
“It included women mill workers, and strikers brought attention
to issues like child labor,” he said.
“It is known for the use of song by
the strikers as a means to bolster
their spirits. And it is for that reason we commemorate with musical
and dance performances on three
stages through the afternoon.”

of it. Why can’t people realize
this scar saved my life and stop
staring at it? Please, I need

your scar because it is different.
They do not mean to stare or
make you uncomfortable. A way
to take control of the situation
would be, when you see someone looking at your chest, to
say, “I had open heart surgery.
This scar saved my life.” If you
are asked about it, answer any
questions honestly. That will
take the mystery out of it — and
word will get around.
