Church Etiquette
The presiding priest should be the last one
entering the church, and the first one to be leaving the
church.
If you are arriving late for Mass, please choose
an appropriate time to enter the church, such as when
everyone is standing, but not during the readings or
prayers. Please know that it is better to be present at
Mass, even if you are a little late, than not to be
present at all.
Please be respectful and courteous when
entering church by turning off ALL cell phones
and beepers. Church is a place of worship and
should be treated with reverence. Thank You.
St. Monica’s is fully handicap
accessible. Dedicated in 1988, St. Monica
Church was the first in the Archdiocese
of Chicago to be fully accessible to people
with disabilities. There are no steps, all
doors have levers instead of knobs, and
the sanctuary is ramped.
Weekend Mass Schedule
Saturday at 4:00 p.m.—English and 6:00 p.m.—Polish
Sunday at 7:30 a.m., 9:00 a.m., 10:30 a.m., and 12:00 Noon.

exceptions due to Holy Days and liturgical celebrations).
SACRAMENTS:
Anointing of the Sick
The special grace of this Sacrament offers the
Lord’s healing strength, peace and courage to anyone
who is seriously or chronically ill, hospitalized or about
to undergo surgery. Please contact the Parish Office if
you wish to have someone anointed.
Baptism
The Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated twice a
month: the first and third Saturday of the month at 11:00
a.m. (some exceptions due to Holy Days and liturgical
celebrations). Please call the Parish Office to register for
the program and to set a date for the Baptism.
Marriage
Archdiocese of Chicago guidelines for marriage
preparation ask that a minimum of six months be set
aside for preparation for marriage. No firm date for a
wedding will be set until the conclusion of the couple’s
first meeting with the parish minister. At least one of
the engaged persons (or their parents) must be a
registered and active parishioner of St. Monica. No Sunday
weddings are scheduled.
Ministry to the Sick/Homebound
If you or a family member are in a local
hospital or are homebound and would like to have a
visit from a priest, please call the Parish Office to make

bring Communion to those who are confined at home
and are unable to attend Mass, either temporarily or on
a continual basis. Please call the Parish Office to
schedule a visit.

C
hristmas is finally here, and all the work is finished. The hustle and bustle along with
all of the work that is associated with celebrating Christmas is done. We are now in the
liturgical, or Church season of Christmas. You know the "Twelve Days of Christmas." Now we can
finally pause to really celebrate the spirit of Christmas and take time for some reflection and
appreciation. Christmas is about gifts. Some gifts are large and some are small, and some have
more significance than others. Hopefully, the greatest gift of Christmas is the most obvious; the
birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and the hope He brings us. The rest of the gifts we
receive are more personal and some of the best ones are intangible. I'd like to share my gratitude
for the gifts I have received this Christmas.
First, we need to thank those who decorated our church, especially Darlene O’Donnell, Tom
Hojnacki, and the entire crew of “elves” too numerous to mention. They took the time out to make
our church look beautiful. Thank you all very much.
Secondly, we thank our musicians, choirs, and cantors who lead us in joyous song this
Christmas season. A special thank you to Mr. Jon Callahan for the time, effort, and patience he put
into the musical preparations.
Thirdly, we would like to thank our maintenance staff who gave the church extra polish and
sprucing up for the Christmas season.
Our thanks to the Liturgy Committee, Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, Servers, and all who
came through with a little extra effort to help Christmas be the beautiful season it is.
Thank you to Fr. Andrew and our Parish Office Staff who kept the “Spirit of Christmas” in
spite of all the extra hassles that are “just a part” of Christmas at the parish; extra phone calls,
time crunches, early deadlines, extra responsibilities and duties, etc.
Finally, I am deeply grateful to all of the parishioners of St. Monica for their generosity to
our parish this Christmas. Thank you all very much for your support.
On Wednesday, we will begin a new year. This is a time for new beginnings, new hopes and
new dreams. On behalf of the entire parish family, let me wish each of you a very happy, and holy
New Year. May God bless you all throughout the New Year with his love and peace.
Fr. Fred Tomzik
and the St. Monica Parish Staff
Following Our Faith . . .
The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph
WE ARE GOD’S HOLY FAMILY
The scriptures of Israel are filled with many stories of barren couples who were miraculously granted the gift of
children by God. Surely the best known among these is the first reading from today, from which Luke took
inspiration when he recounted the miraculous birth of John the Baptist to Zechariah and Elizabeth, and the more
miraculous birth of Jesus to Mary and Joseph. In each instance, we are given examples or role models of those who
trusted in God. More than examples of those who trust, they are models of self-surrender. They abandoned their own
presuppositions and prejudices about the workings of the world and turned their lives over to belief in a God who can
make life grow where none ought to; a God who can turn death around into a new and unimagined life; a God who
can, today, take a tiny child of humble parents in an insignificant town and make him into a light for all the world.
This is what we, as God’s holy family, are called to do each day: to trust not in ourselves and the way we think things
should be, but to open ourselves and surrender ourselves in faith to a God of endless promise.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
In the last century, a few new feasts were blended into the Church year, including today’s. After World War I,
the chaos of daily life in Europe made its impact felt on the family structure. Partly to offer Christians an image of
hope and holiness in married family life, and also to promote the welfare of children, today’s feast was “invented”
in 1921. In 1969, it became a feast of Christmas.
The prayers today remind us not only of family life, but of life in the community of faith. We ponder the
mystery of a God who loves us dearly enough to embrace the struggles, joys, and daily sorrows of family life. The
message of Christmas shines through: God-with-us is available to us in the ordinary patterns of our lives and
commitments. The lives of people who raise their children in difficult circumstances, and of people who remain
faithful to life in the Church in spite of some of their own family struggles, occupy a special place in our hearts
today in prayer.
—Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
REFLECTING ON GOD’S WORD
Could any period in history have been more difficult than the one in which we live when it comes to raising
children, keeping marriages together, or maintaining ties among adult family members? Our whole culture often
seems to be working against us. The Christmas season, especially, magnifies the differences between the values
that we Catholic Christians hold and the values of the ordinary world. And not all the stresses are external. Many
of our troubles arise from the differences among people within our families. Christmas can also exacerbate those
internal tensions. Sometimes we just want to run away and hide from the dual struggle with the bad influences of
the world and the strains of family life!
The feast of the Holy Family gives us much needed encouragement. The Gospel story shows Joseph and Mary
fleeing to Egypt to keep Jesus safe, and then returning to Nazareth in Galilee to raise him in their Jewish culture.
Jesus was protected by his parents from danger of death. Yet they did not keep him sequestered forever. As a child
growing up, he lived out his call to holiness while dwelling in the midst of the Galilean Jewish community, with all
its positive and negative influences. The readings from Sirach and Colossians illustrate how our own call to
holiness can be lived out in our everyday lives. This feast reminds us that in Christ, the divine and the human, the
holy and the ordinary have been forever linked. Whether it is in our nuclear family, our extended family, our
parish family, the family of Christians, or the human family, today we celebrate the holiness that is to be found
within our ordinary human families and communities.
