On December 14 at 4:00 p.m., First Presbyterian Church is going to have a Service for the Longest Night. While the Christmas season is primarily a joyful time, it can also be a difficult reminder of the losses we have experienced. For some people, the absence of loved ones or the reminder of other losses can be painful. This is a service of healing and wholeness designed to acknowledge the complex array of emotions of the Christmas season. We seek to give voice to the pain as well as to the joy of Christmas. The 2014 Advent Choral Service will continue our tradition of tracing the Biblical account of the birth of Christ using scripture followed by contemplative contemporary readings. This year the music will celebrate the wonderfully rich heritage of carols from around the world. Ƭȶȳ ȻȽɀȼȷȼȵ̃Ɂ ɁȳɀɄȷȱȳ ɅȷȺȺ Ȱȳȵȷȼ Ʌȷɂȶ Processional Alleluia for handbells and choir. traditional French Christmas Carol paired with a thought-­provoking text by an Anglican clergyman, Frank Houghton (1894-­1972). Houghton wrote the text to honor fellow missionaries, John and Betty Stam, who were martyred for their faith in 1934 in China. Miraculously, their three-­month-­old daughter, Helen, sɃɀɄȷɄȳȲ ȶȳɀ Ⱦȯɀȳȼɂ̃Ɂ ɂɅȳȺɄȳ-­mile death march hidden in a sleeping bag. I eventually followed him into the textile business where I worked for 34 years, the last 18 as president of a small dyestuff and chemical company until 2009 when I retired. I live on 7th Street with my stepson, Daniel (who also attends First Presbyterian) plus 2 dogs and 2 cats. Many of you know my Zoe, as I take her with me everywhere. SNL Recap On November 1-­‐2, three high school youth from First Presbyterian Church attended a presbytery-­‐wide retreat at Camp Pee Dee in South Carolina. Holland Currie, Virginia Currie, and Anna Wainwright spent the weekend meeting new people, worshiping, singing, and talking about God. The theme for the weekend was Called Out. We spent time discussing the gifts ƚŚĂƚ'ŽĚŚĂƐŐŝǀĞŶƵƐĂŶĚŚŽǁǁĞĐĂŶďĞƐƚƌĞƐƉŽŶĚƚŽ'ŽĚ͛ƐĐĂůůƚŽƵƐĞƚŚŽƐĞŐŝĨƚƐ͘tĞĂƌĞŚŽƉŝŶŐƚŚĂƚƚŚŝƐǁŝůůďĞĂŶĂŶŶƵĂl retreat for high-­‐schoolers, so keep your ears open! On November 9, SNL spent the afternoon raking the yards of several members of First Presbyterian Church. High schoolers and middle schoolers spent time at the houses of Joyce Burris, Betty Lynn Fort, Doris Forte, Blue Honeycutt, and Dick Liles. Three youth from the FPC Youth Council joined Matt and attended the SALT conference at Massanetta Spring Camp and Conference Center over the weekend of November 14-­‐16. This is a leadership conference (Serving And Learning Together) designed for youth and adults involved in leading youth ministry. Kalyn Caudle, Virginia Currie, and Ben McLeod spent the weekend attending keynotes, workshops, and worship services focused on teaching them how to be leaders in their church and youth group. On November 23, families of SNL gathered to have a special Thanksgiving celebration. People brought their favorite Thanksgiving dishes to share with one another. It was a wonderful gathering! On November 30, members of SNL will help with the annual Loaves and Fishes 5K which benefits the Central Elementary School Backpack program. *****************************************************************************

Much of the time at Youth Club this month will be spent preparing to present the Joy Gift Program on Sunday, December 14 during worship. Also, the children will share their giving spirit with some Angel tree children this Christmas as they return with their gift and pray for the receiving family. Trusty Travelers (Grades K-­‐3rd) will be working on their Mwandi well project fundraiser called Roots to Water this month and will be selling those at First Family night and a couple of Sundays during the month. Just like the roots of this Paper white bulb grow downward to find water, the sale of this bulb helps our neighbor in Mwandi grow closer to clean drinking water. This month we will explore the issue of joy. We will begin reading the book Pictures of Hollis Woods by Patricia Reilly Giff. If you have not read this wonderful book, we encourage you to check out a copy and join us in reading this heartwarming story. This Newbery Honor Book thoughtfully explores Hollis' life within the foster care system. During this Advent season, we will begin to explore ways in which we can bring joy to others. For our monthly outing, we will visit The Children's Theatre of Charlotte for a performance of Scrooge in order to discover what this classic story has to teach us about Ebenezer Scrooge's spiritual growth. Cub lessons in November centered around three themes. The first theme was God Blessed Us By Making Us All Special. He loves and knows us. The children made shape people, playdough people, and painted. The second theme centered around our being kind to one another. To honor God, we must show love to each other. The story of Joseph and his coat of many colors was told as a flannelboard story. We decorated a paper coat and acted out the story with a robe of many colors. Our third theme was that of Thanksgiving. The story told to illustrate this was the account of the ten lepers who were heald by Jesus, yet only one returned to give thanks. The children learned that we should remember to give thanks as God has blessed us all. Thanksgiving books, songs, and poems were added along with a turkey art project and thankful bracelets.
