What a year it has been! Our financial position is outstanding and we have many exciting changes planned for 2015. The renovations at Tradies Helensburgh are almost complete with the new R & R Catering Café open, R & R Catering running the Bistro, the kid’s playground, Max’s World and internal upgrades. We’ve had great feedback from the community on the new facilities and we’re looking forward to a successful 2015 in Helensburgh (Page 4). Tradies Caringbah has experienced impressive growth in membership and visitation throughout the year, which has allowed us to improve our food and gaming offerings as well as update the façade of the building. Since our amalgamation back in 2009, Tradies Caringbah has gone from strength to strength and in 2014 it has once again delivered a great financial result. Despite delays in securing approval from Council, we are now ready to start work on a series of significant improvements at Tradies Gymea. This is a very exciting time for Tradies and I encourage you to continue to visit us and watch the changes unfold. 2014 was a busy year for Tradies out in the community with many events, including our recent Girls Morning In fundraiser (see page 8), the annual Relay For Life in May and our first Schools For Cambodia Gala Dinner in August. We are continually impressed by the support and generosity shown by Sutherland Shire residents and we thank you for your dedication to the community. In addition to participating in and organising fundraising events, Tradies donated more than $600,000 in financial and in-kind contributions to community organisations in 2014. Our ClubGRANTS funding vastly exceeds the legislated requirements and we are looking forward to continuing our community relationships and building new ones in 2015. From the President On behalf of Tradies Board of Directors, I’m very happy to inform our members that we will be upgrading our dining facilities in 2015. In order to increase our selection of food offerings, we have recently commenced work in the current Whitlam Room to transform the area into a new Asian restaurant, which is scheduled to open in March 2015. This new restaurant will provide our members with a third dining option when they visit Tradies Gymea. Once the Asian restaurant is open, the current Brasserie will also experience an upgrade. The renovations will lift this area to the high standard set by the West Wing, which opened in 2012. Due to its popularity, the Gymea Café will also be included in the renovations with an expanded seating area and fresh look. The plans presented by the Red Design Group are very impressive and we’re looking forward to offering our members a whole new experience here at Tradies Gymea. For more information on the renovations at Tradies Gymea, please see page 5. The Board wishes all Tradies members and their families a Merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year. On behalf of our Management and Staff, I thank all our members and guests for their continued support throughout 2014 and we look forward to seeing you in 2015. What you might not know is that Ron recently celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary with his wonderful wife Lynn. From everyone at Tradies, congratulations Ron and Lynn! They met at a church dance when he was 18 and she was 15 and it was love at first sight. “I first asked Lynn to marry me when she was 15,” says Ron. “It was very romantic, we were sitting in a bus shelter!” Despite the ‘unromantic’ first proposal, Ron and Lynn tied the knot on the 17th of October 1964 at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church in Kensington. We asked Ron what the secret to 50 years of wedded bliss was and his answer was simple, “I hide all the knives,” he said with a wink. Luckily, we’ve seen Ron and Lynn together and we think we’ve worked out their secret: love, a sense of humour and simply enjoying life together. For many years, sub branch member Mr Giles, who is an avid lover of history, worked towards the installation of this plaque along with Sutherland Shire Council’s former Mayor Steve Simpson and parks administrators. Caringbah RSL Sub Branch is the first in the Sutherland Shire to hold the Anzac Day Dawn Service, which in 2015 will commemorate 100 years from the first solders landing in Gallipoli. The march starts at 4.15am on the corner of Kingsway & Denman Ave on the 25th April 2015 and will parade to the Caringbah Memorial Park where members of the public including local politicians, schools, council members, Rotarians and others will lay wreaths to honour those who have served and died for their country in all conflicts. It was in 1945 in the kitchen of Arch Tickner’s home, that the first meeting of the Caringbah RSL was held with 9 members in attendance. A venue was sought for future meetings and the old Caringbah Hall with its rental of one shilling a week was selected. The Caringbah Hotel now stands where these first meetings took place. For more information on laying a wreath or becoming an RSL member please contact the RSL Sub branch Secretary The first land donated to the RSL, housed a garage which Bob Tuckwell at [email protected] was replaced by an army hut purchased from the Holsworthy Army barracks in November of 1946. From the original 9 members to the 100 strong today, the Sub branch is now housed in the thriving Tradies Caringbah on Banksia Road within the original building, built in 1958. Members today include serving members, members from the 2nd World War, Vietnam War, newly recruited affiliate members including those whose forbears date from the first and second world wars. 14 14 Staff Awards The annual Tradies Staff Awards Night Catering Award Rabindra Bhandari Rookie of the Year Kerri Anthony is a fabulous night that the whole team looks forward to!
