Christmas 2014 Our finest selection of delectable gifts and delicious wines Simon Berry CHAIRMAN In the wintery light of St James’s, our Georgian shopfront, with its glowing windows and the gas-lit square of Pickering Place beyond, has a distinctly atmospheric appeal. It is, perhaps, this Dickensian charm, along with the inviting prospect of good things within, which makes a Christmas visit to Berry Bros. & Rudd so very special. The seasonal packing of parcels and furnishing of tables with wonderful things to drink brings with it a sense of cheer that’s hard to resist. Especially for wine merchants. In the hope that we can bring a taste of Christmas at Berry Bros. & Rudd to your home, we have compiled a handsome selection of hampers, gifts, wine and spirits over the following pages. Amongst their number, we hope you will find presents that will be a delight to give and wines that will be a pleasure to drink. With very best wishes for a happy Christmas. Alongside our expertly chosen collections of wine and spirits, we have worked with a superb range of suppliers to provide sweet and savoury treats, including fine pâtés, flavourful oils and condiments, bonbons, indulgent chocolates, cakes and assorted delicacies. We hope you find something to inspire… SHERRY & NIBBLES CHAMPAGNE & TRUFFLES NO.3 & TONIC Savoury and moreish, this Fino Sherry from the prestigious Bodegas Emilio Lustau has to be the ultimate appetite sharpener, especially when accompanied by sweetly salty almonds and plump olives. The Fino style – bone dry, with a saline lick and delicate, nuanced flavours – is best enjoyed lightly chilled, and is the perfect gift for foodies. This double-act of indulgence makes a deliciously decadent present. To accompany our acclaimed Grand Cru Champagne, we have selected a gift box of sumptuous truffles from award-winning British chocolatier Rococo. Made with Valrhona’s milk chocolate and topped with popping candy, these silky ganaches are the most opulent we’ve tasted. Recently awarded another gold medal to add to its clutch of accolades, our No.3 Gin is a superb iteration of the London Dry style, which has juniper – with its heady aromas of pine and spice – to the fore. In addition to our elegant Grand Cru Champagne, we have included an intense Australian Riesling which – with its taut flavours of apple and stone-fruit and racy acidity – is an excellent conversation piece. Redefining richness and indulgence, this hamper – created with the Francophile in mind – includes delicacies such as a sumptuous jar of Lafitte foie gras which is ideally suited to the complex, almost tropical flavours of Ch. de Cérons’s Semillondominated blend. In addition, we have sourced a deliciously aromatic olive oil from the makers of Ch. Lynch-Bages and a lovely Beaujolais that’s just right with goose. For those who may wish to indulge their sweet tooth this Christmas, the Italian hamper is the perfect choice. Combining traditional delicacies such as a rich panettone and soft, fruity nougat, this year we have also introduced some playful (yet thoroughly grown up) praline ‘‘Funghi’’ chocolates from luxury chocolatier Rococo. Our wine choices for the hamper are true classics: a fine Chianti and a lemon-zest light Fiano di Avellino – delicious. Showcasing a brace of excellent bottles from our award-winning Spanish wine selection, this hamper features a traditionally made savoury and soft Rioja and an elegantly aromatic Verdejo from Bodegas Belondrade y Lurton. With an embarrassment of riches to select from on the food front, we eventually decided upon three favourites: Andalucían olive oil, palate-sharpening olives from Brindisa and some especially delicious salted almonds. With treats crossing the spectrum of taste from sweet to savoury, we’ve included balsamic pearls and white truffle honey, piquant harissa paste, intense chocolates and lemon grovekissed olive oil. The three wines selected span the globe but are united in the fact that they absolutely sing when matched with the right food: a Burgundy which has a hint of bacon fat on the nose; a full-bodied Australian red for richly flavoured fare and a mouthwateringly soft and complex Tuscan red. To mark the impressive progress that the English winemaking scene has made in recent years, we are proud to put our name to this hamper which includes some of the best Cornish, Sussex and Kentish wines we have had the pleasure of drinking. In addition to our three elegant wines, we have selected treats from a range of fine British purveyors, showcasing some of the delicious culinary diversity on offer such as tasty accompaniments to seasonal cheeses, luxurious chocolates and distinctly moreish biscuits. We feel this traditional selection includes all the seasonal treats one might hope for. The classic wine regions of France are handsomely represented with a Premier Cru white Burgundy, a sensational red Bordeaux and one of our favourite non-vintage Champagnes from Billecart-Salmon. The gastronomic treats have been selected with festivities in mind, from crisp and intense after-dinner mints to the best Piccalilli we’ve tasted to set off those cold cuts. We have included a decadent millennium Champagne for an opening salvo, some of Burgundy and Bordeaux’s top names for furnishing the table and a vintage Port and Armagnac to savour long into the night. From white truffles and foie gras to Burgundy and Bordeaux wines, each item selected for Le Grand is a byword for excellence. The wines are an embarrassment of riches: delicate Gosset from one of the foremost recent vintages; a beautifully aged Pomerol from a crème de la crème producer; a muscular Grand Cru red Burgundy from lauded vineyard Chambertin Clos de Bèze; a yellow-fruitladen Premier Cru Puligny-Montrachet from rising star producer Bernstein and a superlative vintage Port, mellowed for more than 40 years. Our five-star Champagne from the Grand Cru village of Mailly is beautifully rich and balanced with flavours of lemongrass, brioche and honeysuckle. There is no better signal that Christmas festivities are well and truly underway than popping the cork on a remarkable jeroboam of Grand Cru Champagne. Whether you want to give a gift that makes an extremely favourable impression, or just want the bubbles to keep flowing in style, the contents of this bottle – an elegant and refined wine – is every bit as impressive as its appearance. Contains one magnum (150cl) of the following: − Berry Bros. & Rudd United Kingdom Cuvée, Grand Cru, Champagne Mailly − Presented in a gift box Code: X00311 Code: X00313 Price: £60.00 Price: £150.00 bbr.com/xmas | [email protected] | 0800 280 2440 Contains one jeroboam (300cl) of the following: − Berry Bros. & Rudd United Kingdom Cuvée, Grand Cru, Champagne Mailly − Presented in a wooden gift box 15 CHRISTMAS FIZZ LUXURY FIZZ Champagne can start conversation as well as keep it flowing, especially when the bottles in question are something out of the ordinary, such as these two artisan wines. At René Geoffroy, just down the road from Dom Pérignon, winemaker Jean-Baptiste is making Pinot Noir-dominant Champagnes which are universally superb. J.L. Vergnon, meanwhile, showcases long-matured, ripe Chardonnay in his expressive fine wine. A decadent pairing of two sumptuous styles from Champagne’s leading houses: the 100 percent Chardonnay blanc de blancs represents Billecart-Salmon’s most elegant expression, while the Bollinger Rosé beguiles with a combination of refinement and richness typified by flavours of plums and patisserie. We’ve selected these two powerhouse Champagnes for those who appreciate both style and substance. Contains one bottle (75cl) each of the following: − Champagne René Geoffroy, Expression, Premier Cru − Champagne J.L. Vergnon, Conversation, Brut, Grand Cru − Presented in a gift box Contains one bottle (75cl) each of the following: − Champagne Billecart-Salmon, Blanc de Blancs, Grand Cru − Champagne Bollinger, Rosé − Presented in a wooden gift box CHRISTMAS CLARET MAGNUM CHRISTMAS BURGUNDY MAGNUM A good Bordeaux at Christmas takes some beating – especially as it is the natural partner to mouthwatering winter roasts, pies and savoury puddings. A magnum adds a little more theatre to any dinner (and is all the more impressive to give), especially when the wine in question is as serious as this 2004 Ch. Potensac. With a decade of ageing under its belt, this blackcurrant-forward Médoc is just getting into its stride. At Christmas, little can match Burgundy as the source of sublime wine to drink alongside succulent goose or roast turkey. With juicy red-berry fruit and a sophistication that allies it more with a Premier Cru vineyard than a village wine, this Volnay from flourishing producer Maison Roche de Bellene would be an excellent choice for your festive feast. Contains one magnum (150cl) of the following: − 2004 Ch. Potensac, Médoc, Bordeaux − Presented in a gift box Code: X00314 Code: X00315 Code: X00335 Code: X00312 Price: £62.00 Price: £120.00 Price: £50.00 Price: £60.00 16 Free UK delivery on Christmas gifts included within this brochure bbr.com/xmas | [email protected] | 0800 280 2440 Contains one magnum (150cl) of the following:: − 2010 Volnay Réserve Spéciale, Maison Roche de Bellene, Burgundy − Presented in a gift box 17 CHABLIS & CLARET SPANISH STARS BERRY BROS. & RUDD OWN SELECTION TRIO FRENCH CLASSICS Traditions come alive at Christmas - not least when it comes to wine choices such as this classic pairing of Chablis and Claret, packaged in a gift box. The Chablis represents Chardonnay at its most elegant - an excellent match with seafood, shellfish, or even turkey – while the Bordeaux offers darkly fruity, structured, smooth drinking. Spain’s wines have been in ascendency in recent years, and these two bottles are particular favourites with our customers. Albariño – peach-laden and elegant – is an ideal match with shellfish, bringing a whisper of sunshine to the table even in winter. On the other hand, this gutsy Rioja guided by star producer, Álvaro Palacios, has cigar-box spice and expressive red fruit: a real find. Just as you can learn much from a restaurant’s house wine, so too should you be able to judge a wine merchant by its own-label bottles – and we wouldn’t put our name to anything which wasn’t delicious to drink. This trio of our most popular seasonal choices – a gorgeous, sparkling Crémant de Limoux, our five-star Bordeaux and an elegant Burgundy – are excellent examples of their type and, when packaged together, make a lovely gift. From the heartland of wine-producing excellence, this trinity of French wines will satisfy those who enjoy Old World classics. The fine Sancerre comes from highly respected Loire producer André Dezat, meanwhile the red Burgundy – a superb addition to the Christmas feast – is a fruitfilled yet refined offering from rising star Sylvain Loichet. The Bordeaux, matured for over a decade, is ready to bring statesman-like structure, dark cassis and complex leather flavours to the table. Contains one, three or six bottles (75cl) each of the following: − 2012 Chablis, Domaine du Colombier, Burgundy − 2009 Ch. They are based on a design by Francis Berry and shaped from one continuous piece of high-quality glass to bring the best out of each specific wine. THE ‘CHAMPAGNE’ GLASS We have revised the popular Champagne flute, giving it a fuller bowl and wider opening, to allow for the fullest aromatic expression of the wine – particularly important when drinking Champagnes with age. The bottom of the bowl is shaped and etched to ensure a stream of fine bubbles. F00352 THE ‘WHITE BURGUNDY’ GLASS 28 £47.50 per pair THE ‘RED BURGUNDY’ GLASS £50.00 per pair F00371 THE ‘RED BORDEAUX’ GLASS The shape of this glass is designed to concentrate the aromas of fresh, aromatic young wines and to highlight crispness and elegance on the tongue, so it is perfect for blancs from Bordeaux and the Loire, as well as Riesling, Chenin Blanc, Albariño, Gewürztraminer and Muscat. F00372 £47.50 per pair THE ‘PORT & SAUTERNES’ GLASS Pinot Noir demands a wide bowl to give full vent to its heady bouquet. This glass obliges and its shape directs the wine onto the palate in a way that allows full appreciation of its silky texture. Powerful Piedmont wines also thrive in this glass. Like the Red Burgundy glass, this is designed to reflect the sensual quality of Burgundy. A wide bowl to maximise aromatic expression and a rim fluted slightly outwards to maximise the texture on the tongue make this glass ideal for Chardonnay and other richly textured whites. F00370 THE ‘WHITE BORDEAUX’ GLASS £55.00 per pair This has the familiar depth and breadth of the classic Claret glass, but is not so big as to swamp the aromas of more delicate wines. Shaped to enhance the expression of fruit on the mid-palate, this glass would also work well for Northern Rhône reds. F00373 The complete range of our events can be found on our website at bbr.com/wine-events or by requesting a copy of the calendar by calling 0800 280 2440. If you’re unsure which event might suit your intended recipient, then gift vouchers, available in denominations of £10, £25, £50 or £100, can be redeemed against any of our Wine Events, and can be presented in a gift box along with details of our Wine Events Calendar. THE ‘WHISKY & WATER’ GLASS Comfortable and perfectly balanced in the hand, this is ideal either as a water glass or a tumbler for spirits with mixers and ice, the clarity of the glass lending extra appeal to a Whisky and soda, Gin and tonic or whatever your poison may be. This glass is designed to bring the best out of any aromatic wines served in small measures, such as Port and Sauternes. We have made sure there is enough room in the glass to swirl the wine, allowing the drinker to experience the full glory of its bouquet. F00369 £52.00 per pair Held in our historic cellars and buildings at No.3 St James’s, or in our Hampshire Tasting Room, giving the gift of a wine event at Berry Bros. & Rudd is a truly memorable experience. Whether you select an evening of Grand Cru wines hosted by a producer, a decadent dinner led by one of our experts or something a little more educational such as a tutored tasting, all our events are designed to indulge our guests’ passion in wine and gastronomy. £27.50 per pair F00368 £35.00 per pair Free UK delivery on Christmas gifts included within this brochure bbr.com/xmas | [email protected] | 0800 280 2440 29 CHRISTMAS DRINKING WINES Whether you are looking for wines to furnish the festive table or delicious bottles for parties and gatherings, our experts have compiled their favourite seasonal choices. We have grouped these into ‘six of the best’ categories, so you can browse by your preferred grape variety or style: for whites we have Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Alternative Whites; for red, Bordeaux Blends, Pinot Noir and Alternative Reds, not forgetting Champagnes, Sweet Wines, Ports and Spirits. And to begin, we have a rather tempting offer from Pol Roger. 20% OFF POL ROGER Pol Roger is a family-owned house producing wines of finesse and elegance which age beautifully. Its Non-Vintage Brut Réserve, made from equal parts of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, is consistently one of the very best on the market, largely due to the high proportion of aged reserve wines in the blend. The vintage wines, on the other hand, have a slightly higher proportion of Pinot Noir, bringing with it layers of complexity as the wines mature. Whichever style tempts you, it will make a superb addition to your table this Christmas. CHAMPAGNE POL ROGER, RÉSERVE, BRUT Pol Roger’s Non-Vintage Brut Réserve is perfect for lovers of exuberantly-styled Champagnes. Feminine and fruity in its youth, the wine takes on a fuller flavour with age. Made from 33% Chardonnay, 34% Pinot Noir and 33% Pinot Meunier with the added reserve wines specially selected to achieve the requisite elegance, balance and harmony. It’s perfect for the cellar as well as current drinking. There is a fine, taut power on the palate, broader and more generous than recent vintages. Full of gingerbread, ripe stonefruit and red apple, the wine is held together by a filigree thread of acidity. Reminiscent of the superb (and underrated), 1998, the 2004 is a must for all Champagne fans; blossom, complemented by a palate which sings a stone fruit hymn with hints of hazelnut and almond at the back of the palate. While the non-vintage wines are an excellent way to sample a producer’s typical style, for more weight and refinement we have also included an array of vintage Champagnes from favourable years. Quite simply, nothing signals a celebration like an elegant glass of bubbles. BERRY BROS. & RUDD UNITED KINGDOM CUVÉE, GRAND CRU, CHAMPAGNE MAILLY Sourced from the prestigious Grand Cru village of Mailly, and benefiting from over three years ageing, our Cuvée is a classic blend of 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay. Our selected six wines take in the spectrum, ranging from lime-packed racy examples from the New World through to finely wrought Sancerre and Graves. Best enjoyed in the first flushes of youth, the wines we’ve chosen here will be stunning alongside seafood dishes and white meats. From crisp, mineral-led Chablis to fatter more buttery styles, Chardonnay is a wonderfully versatile grape. For us, its spiritual home is in Burgundy, where examples tend to combine floral notes with citrus acidity and enough weight to partner goose, turkey or shellfish. In addition, we have selected New World examples that demonstrate similarly elegant characteristics. One of our favourite categories to compile, we consider these seven wines standard-bearers for different styles and grapes outside of the classic Christmas regions. From a richly aromatic Viognier to a Grüner Veltliner that marries soft fruit with an almost savoury edge, all of these bottles come highly rated by their buyers and make exceptionally good drinking. 2013 BERRY BROS. & RUDD CHILEAN SAUVIGNON BLANC, VIÑA QUINTAY, CASABLANCA VALLEY 2013 ROBERTSON WINERY CHARDONNAY, ROBERTSON VALLEY, SOUTH AFRICA 2012 FANTASÍA TORRONTÉS, BODEGAS MAURICIO LORCA, MENDOZA, ARGENTINA Single bottle (96768B) Case price (6) Case saving Single bottle (96697B) Case price (6) Case saving £9.50 £51.30 (£8.55/btl) £5.70 2013 SAUVIGNON DE TOURAINE, JEAN-CHRISTOPHE MANDARD, LOIRE 2012 WILLIAM FÈVRE ESPINO CHARDONNAY, PIRQUE, MAIPO VALLEY, CHILE Single bottle (Z0155B) Case price (6) Case saving Single bottle (96965B) Case price (6) Case saving £10.95 £59.10 (£9.85/btl) £6.60 2013 PULENTA ESTATE LA FLOR SAUVIGNON BLANC, MENDOZA, ARGENTINA Single bottle (98320B) Case price (6) Case saving 2011 CHURTON SAUVIGNON BLANC, MARLBOROUGH, NEW ZEALAND In the Wairau valley so much Sauvignon Blanc was made in 2011 that the locals dubbed it the ‘Savelanche’ vintage. Characterised by silky tannins and appealing red fruit in youth, those older examples bring wonderfully savoury elements to the table that match so well with myriad dishes. While the Gevrey is undoubtedly the most revered name in this collection, William Fevre’s Chilean example and an excellent offering from the USA should not be overlooked. No matter how great or humble, Clarets are essentially fantastically balanced food wines, combining the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot’s ripeness and fruit. The examples we have selected here, with their supple tannins and black-fruit flavours, would all be superb matches with rich game dishes, roasted red meats or even cheeses. In the New World, the Bordeaux blend takes on a more fruit-forward incarnation, as seen in our buyers’ Chilean and Argentinian choices. While, naturally, Bordeaux and Burgundy are the most coveted choices for the Christmas table, it doesn’t do any harm to shake things up occasionally. With selections here from Greece (which would surely raise an eyebrow) and Australia, alongside the more conventional stamping grounds of Rioja and the RhÔne, all of these wines are drinking superbly well and would be welcome additions to any festive table. 2012 WILLIAM FÈVRE ESPINO PINOT NOIR, PIRQUE, MAIPO VALLEY, CHILE 2013 VIÑA DOÑA JAVIERA MERLOT, MAIPO VALLEY, CHILE 2011 STONE THE CROWS SHIRAZ & VIOGNIER, SOUTH AUSTRALIA Single bottle (96966B) Case price (6) Case saving £10.95 £59.10 (£9.85/btl) £6.60 2010 CH. The palate is sweet and layered, however there’s a good linear acidity which, combined with a hint of ‘rancio’ make this an interesting and enjoyable alternative to some of the more traditional favourites amongst the fortified options available. On the nose there is an abundance of dried fruit notes, while the palate is sweet and layered; however there’s a good linear acidity which, combined with a hint of ‘rancio’ make this an enjoyable alternative to some of the more traditional sweet wines. Such was the later harvest that the fruit had more time to ripen, giving it a slightly fuller, fruitier feel overall. It’s still gorgeous to look at too, with that frothy ‘head’, while the beguiling nose sings more of lemon meringue, and grapey/honeydew notes, rather than the grassier ones of 2012. Single bottle (99786B) Case price (6) Case saving £12.95 £69.90 (£11.65/btl) £7.80 Single bottle (91149H) Case price (6) Case saving A delicate and floral nose with notes of orange blossom, honeysuckle and lemon zest all combining elegantly. The palate reveals poise and a pleasant weight, whilst there is a satisfying, mouth-coating viscosity to the wine. The finish is fresh and long; a superb match for blue cheese. £23.00 £124.20 (£20.70/btl) £13.80 £14.95 £80.70 (£13.45/btl) £9.00 Blended especially for Berry Bros. & Rudd and matured in oak for 20 years, the sweetness in this fine mellow Port is beautifully balanced by the richness of the fruit and the maturity from the wood; rich and nutty, it would be heavenly with chocolate-based desserts. £23.00 £115.56 (£19.26/btl) £22.44 Free UK delivery on Christmas gifts included within this brochure Berry Bros. & Rudd St James’s Finest Reserve Port displays a deep, dark ruby hue. The nose of lush red and black fruits suggest the full, rewarding richness to come. The palate is sweetly opulent and concentrated with vivid blackberry and black cherry fruit and silky tannins. The finish is long and fine. BERRY BROS. & RUDD WILLIAM PICKERING, 20-YEAR-OLD TAWNY PORT Sauternes is always a welcome treat whether enjoyed with foie gras at the start of meal or a lemon tart at its end, and is a must have for anyone’s wine cellar. The 2006 Ch. de Malle has intense tropical flavours such as pineapple and mango, with honey and caramel rounding out the finish. The wine is sweet but well-balanced by its acidity which stops it feeling heavy and cloying on the palate. DE CÉRONS, CÉRONS, BORDEAUX Single bottle (93032B) Case price (6) Case saving A honeyed amber liquid of some 220 g/l of residual sugar that is kept beautifully balanced with fresh acidity. A far cry from the more oxidative styles of Tuscan Vin Santo and perhaps a relic of the wine that the Venetians were so fond of in their medieval trading days? Whether you like your Port expressively fruity or complex and aged, the our range takes in the spectrum. We are biased, but it seems to us that every Christmas table should feature William Pickering’s finest – mature and mellow, with 20 years in oak under its belt, this is a serious wine for the money. As an alternative to accompany your cheeseboard, consider a rich and concentrated Oloroso Sherry, or for those who are looking for something on the sweeter side, we have a wonderful Madeira – redolent of figs and raisins. This excellent 10-year-old blend sports all that you would expect from Barbeito: precision, a perfect interplay of sweetness and acidity, a neverending finish, and the versatility to excite countless pre-dinner nibbles, challenging cheeses, and many a solid pudding. Definitely a pudding wine rather than a dessert one. Dark in colour with aromas of dried fruits, this is a rich and concentrated wine. An Oloroso (the word means ‘fragrant’ in Spanish) from the oldest solera, this would be equally at home with game or the cheese board.
