P O Box 2092, Saginaw, Mi 48605- 2092 NOTICE The club mailing address is now, Last year we kicked off the IDPA/Defensive Pistol Practice program. Saginaw Field and Stream Club became an IDPA “sanctioned” club and sent 6 members to become trained and certified as IDPA Safety Officers. Starting in June, every Thursday night, new shooters came out to see what it was all about and discovered an exciting sport shooting experience. Each night we saw anywhere from 9 or 10 to over 20 people come out to try their hand. The Thursday night shoots became a quick draw from around the area to shooters looking to learn, train and grow as competitive shooters while building defensive pistol skills. Now, we plan to take our IDPA involvement to the next level and have plans to host a match next July. The program for our January meeting will be presented by Dave Alexander and Gary Cuttitta. Both have been instrumental in starting the IDPA program at the Linwood Bay Sportsmen’s Club and will talk about the benefits this program has provided to their club, what the shooting sports movement is doing and how it can become a positive experience for the membership as well as the club. With videos and photos of some of our own shooters, everyone will get a chance to see IDPA in action and why it’s become so popular. 1296 N Gleaner Rd Saginaw, MI 48609 9495 Club Shooting Hours Guest’s Are as follows, 0800 AM until sunset, use you hunting guide to determine sunset. As I have previously stated, this is bad deal for the citizens of Michigan. We should not be selling huge blocks of land to foreign entities, for any reason. Graymont can accomplish their stated objectives, and Michigan can ensure environmental responsibility with a long-term lease of this land. A Federal judge has placed our wolves back on the Endangered Species list, nullifying our wolf management plan. This apparently happened in response to a Humane Society of the United States lawsuit challenging the original decision to remove wolves from the endangered species list. This also applies to the wolves in Minnesota and Wisconsin. I don’t know if this can be appealed, we’ll have to wait and see. Graymont is still trying to acquire 10,000 acres of land for limestone extraction in the UP. They have reduced the amount of land that they want to purchase outright to about 8262 acres and have offered other parcels in other areas of the UP in exchange for 1739 acres. Graymont has also offered a royalty fee of 18.75 cents per ton December, 2014 NATURAL RESOURCES REPORT For legislative issues go to “Lansing Watch” on our web page. (saginawfieldandstream.com) William (Bill) Rustem received the first Thomas L. Washington Lifetime Conservation Award. I have known Bill for many years and can’t think of a more deserving person. Bill has just retired from being Governor Snyder’s director of strategy. Previously he served on Governor Milliken’s staff. He was instrumental in the passage of the Bottle Bill and the establishment of the Michigan Natural Resource Trust Fund. He served as manager of the Great Lakes Fishery Fund and as director of the Center for Great Lakes in Chicago. He has been an ongoing supporter and advisor of MUCC, and managed to get in some hunting and fishing. Bill is a long time supporter of scientific wildlife management and has been continually active in the natural resource arena. Congratulations Bill. I have just heard about a federal court decision to relist the wolves in the mid-west as endangered species. This is based on a law suit by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) opposing the delisting by the Fish and Wildlife Service. I am sure this will put a crimp in any wolf hunt plans until it is overturned. I understand the decision was not made on scientific data but on the failure of the Fish and Wildlife Service to follow proper procedures – whatever the %#&! that means. Now that we have the lawyers involved, we will end up with a resolution so convoluted, restricted and burdensome that it will actually encourage vigilante activity and physically place the wolf on the endangered list. The sad thing is, sound scientific wildlife management has again fallen to misdirected emotions one of its biggest enemies along with economics and stupidity. It seems like every corner I turn someone is trying to take away some piece of our natural resources. I have discussed Graymont’s effort to control some 10,000 acres of state land in the U.P. Their new proposal has shifted away from a purchase to some kind of a combination of land swaps and leases. No matter, the end result is they want control which means the public is out. There is an effort to establish aquaculture in the Great Lakes. That’s where fish are raised in large net containers placed somewhere in the lakes. This means the public cannot utilize that section of the lake. Not to mention the pollution from the droppings and excess food. In addition, these fish often escape and can add yet another invasive species or disease. The ridiculous thing about it is, these aquaculture companies are not competitive in the world market and will probably go under and abandon their equipment. As of this writing there is a letter being prepared in opposition to the Graymont proposal. This letter will be signed by all the members of the Conservation Coalition. The Coalition is made up of the state and national conservation organizations, spearheaded by MUCC. We have a seat on the Coalition and will be signing the letter. There were a number of presentations on the youth programs being put on all over the state. These volunteers, with DNR assistance, are doing a wonderful job. Thanks to them for insuring the future. The preliminary results of the 2014 deer season were reviewed. I won’t go into that as most of you already have the data. Jim De Clerck There are awards presented at almost every meeting. They range from C.O.’s for life saving events to long time Hunter Education instructors to DNR personnel receiving national awards. Normally I do not comment on these, but there was special one this meeting. The Trap & Skeet Field Mike Meyer Here it is, late December and we’re in the middle of the Christmas Holiday Season already. I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and has a Blessed New Year. The Trap and Skeet fields will be open on Tuesdays and Saturdays throughout the winter. Most days we’ll have a good fire in the fireplace. We will probably be having our Snowbird Winter Traveling Trap League again this coming year. (We haven’t heard from the organizers yet). This league is held in conjunction with The Shiawassee Conservation Club and the Brant Gun Club. It’s a great opportunity to meet some of the shooters at a couple of other nearby clubs. If it follows the pattern of the previous years, it will be held every other Sunday, starting at the Shiawassee Conservation Club on January 4th. If you miss a shoot, you can either make it up later or don’t worry about it. There’s still time to join the league. Call or stop out at the club for details.
