Heat Rash (Miliaria) INFORMATION FOR PATIENTS AND FAMILIES What is heat rash? Heat rash is a bumpy rash caused when sweat glands in the skin are blocked. Many children get heat rash during hot, humid weather. Infants can also get heat rash during the winter because of overdressing, a fever or ointments applied to the skin. What are the possible symptoms? Your child may have the following symptom: Tiny, pink bumps on the neck, upper back or skin creases. What is the treatment? Your child’s doctor will talk with you about specific care for your child. Some general guidelines to follow include: • Give cool baths without soap • Let the skin air dry • Dress your child in a diaper only, or in as few clothes as possible • Use a fan when your child is sleeping When should I call the doctor? Call your child’s doctor if: • The rash lasts more than a few days with treatment • Your child has any new symptoms • You have any other questions or concerns In case of an urgent concern or emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room right away.
