Notes From Fr. Larry - E

Notes From Fr. Larry
January 2015
DEAR BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN CHRIST,
We are in the midst of the Christmas
season. After celebrating the incarnation,
God becoming human, we now rejoice in
the model that Mary, Joseph and Jesus
give us in the Holy Family. Next week, the
visitors from the East come to pay homage
to the Newborn King on the Feast of the Epiphany of
our Lord.
Epiphany Sunday has been designated Immigration
Sunday by the Minnesota Bishops and begins National
Migration Week as promoted by the United States
Conference of Catholic Bishops. We have just retold of
story of Mary and Joseph needing to migrate for the
Roman census and for reasons of safety, they flee to
Egypt to protect the child, Jesus. Others reached out
to them in their need while they were separated from
their home of Nazareth. In our own day, many families
face similar situations due to economic conditions or
violence in their home countries. Bishop Hoeppner
says, “We reflect on our responsibility, as a loving
Christian community, to welcome them and advocate
for just policies that respect their human dignity and
promote the well-being of their families. I hope that we
can take this year’s Immigration Sunday as an
opportunity to grow in faith by reaching out to the
strangers in our midst and by forming stronger bonds of
solidarity in our communities.”
January 22 is the 32nd Anniversary of the Supreme
Court decision that resulted in legal abortions
throughout the country.
The protection of the
defenseless unborn child must be a priority in
promoting the Gospel of Life. Many of our youth and
adults will be participating in the March for Life in both
Washington D.C. and St. Paul. May these efforts bear
the fruit of leading our nation to value the gift of life.
By the end of January, parishioners will receive a
statement of your fiscal stewardship for the calendar
year which you may need for tax purposes. I want to
thank the entire parish community for your gracious
response in supporting all of the ministries of St.
Joseph’s Parish.
Fr. JohnMelkies is home in India visiting his family. In
addition, he will be visiting our sister parish, Sacred
Heart in Kundukulam for two days. He will celebrate
Mass, visit with the parish families, and bring a booklet
put together by our Catholic School children which
describes in words and pictures our parish and school.
We look forward to hearing about Fr. John’s visit when
he returns.
Stay warm and safe during this month, experiencing the
warmth of Christ in the midst of our parish.
Your brother in Christ,
Father Larry Delaney, Pastor
Liturgy
WE ARE FAMILY You are encouraged to take a
moment after Mass to congratulate those who
celebrate sacramental moments in our midst:
baptisms, first communions, wedding and anniversary
couples, confirmed, graduates, et cetera. Let’s assure
each other of our prayerful support and get to know
one another better in our parish family.
BAPTISMS are not encouraged during Lent so please
consider your child’s baptism either before Lent or on
Easter. Lent begins on February 18 and Easter is April
5.
LITURGICAL MINISTRY TRAININGS will be held on
Sunday afternoon, January 25 in the church. Lectors
will be at 1:15, ministers of Holy Communion at 2:00
and altar servers at 3:00. To serve as a lector, one
must be in good standing with the Catholic church.
Altar servers must be baptized Catholic and in at least
fifth grade. Ministers of Holy Communion must be
confirmed, in good standing with the Catholic church
and at least 16 years old. Please consider serving our
parish in one of these ministries! We are very much in
need of all ministries, but especially communion
captains and sacristans. If you would like further
information, please contact the liturgy office. The next
training will be in April, 2015.
BOWING AT MASS Just a reminder that during the
Creed we bow at the words, “and by the Holy Spirit
was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.”
This is a profound bow…meaning a bow from the
waist. We bow because this simple gesture reminds us
of what Jesus did for us. If we truly thought about and
realized the awesomeness of these words, the bowing
would be second nature. When receiving Holy
Communion, there is a bow of just the head, and an
enthusiastic “Amen”!
MONDAY EVENINGS IN JANUARY—There will be NO
Monday evening Mass, reconciliation, rosary or
MCCM gatherings during the month of January while
Fr. John is away in India.

The devotion to the Holy Family was born in
Bethlehem, together with the baby, Jesus. The
shepherds went to adore the child and, at the same
time, they gave honor to his family. Later, in a similar
way, the three wise men came from the East to adore
and give honor to the Newborn King with gifts of
gold, frankincense, and myrrh that would be
safeguarded by His family.
Things to Do:
Say a prayer dedicating your family to the Holy
Family.
Have the whole family participate in cooking
dinner. You might try a Lebanese meal. Some
suggestions: stuffed grape leaves; stuffed
cabbage rolls; lentils and rice; spinach and meat
pies; chicken and dumplings; hummus; Lebanese
bread; tabbouleh, a Lebanese salad; and kibbi, a
traditional Lebanese dish of specially ground
meat mixed with spices and cracked wheat. This
is the same kind of food that Mary served Jesus
and Joseph.

ST. JOSEPH’S ADVENT PROGRAMS filled our hearts
with song and cheer this Christmas Season- Our
students did a beautiful job at all of our Advent
performances this year. Their songs, stories, and
music prepared us for Christmas and shared so much
joy! It was especially special to hear our children’s
voices through our new sound system. Thank you to
all of our families and supporters who helped set this
up and assisted the children with practices. Mrs.
Grieve, our music teacher is especially thankful for
the generous support that makes these evenings so
special.
AUCTION ITEM OF THE WEEK- This week’s
highlighted Dinner Dance Auction item is a

Sacred Heart Church, Kundukulam—Monthly Report
CELEBRATION OF ANNIVERSARY DAYS OF LEGION OF
MARY—Anniversary days of Legion of Mary of local
units were celebrated in Suravanthi and Itisery, the
two substations of Kundukulam parish. The local units
conducted a few competitions earlier in view of this
celebration. The celebrations started with their regular
prayer sessions conducted in a creative way where all
villagers participated followed by a procession carrying
the statue of Our Lady through the streets in
Suravanthi and around the chapel in Itisery, ending
with solemn benediction. The day ended with a
solemn Eucharistic celebration, two dances by the
children of the respective village, sweets & prizes.
CHILDREN’S DAY—India celebrates her first Prime
Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s birthday, November 14 as
National Children’s Day. We celebrated that day, both
schools together, with colorful events of both the
children and the staff. As the students were highly,
spontaneously interested in celebrating the teachers’
day, most of the programs were performed by the
staff in order to encourage the students on children’s
day. The programs started with a prayer session where
the children were very spontaneous in thanking the
Lord enlisting all the privileges that they enjoy at
home, school and the society at large.
MISSION SUNDAY—India had been the mission
country for a long period. The church here should
then contribute for the missionary activities all over
the world in return. That was the message focused
in the Mission Sunday celebration through the
liturgy. The people of St. Joseph Parish in Moorhead
were gratefully remembered for your solidarity in
our journey of faith and offered special prayers for
your well being. It was insisted that through our
prayers primarily witnessing life, promotion of
vocations and material contributions, we all can
participate in the mission activities.
