It is testimony not only to our product range but also to the excellence of the whole Ford team, our colleagues at Ford Credit and, of course, of our dealer partners. Fiesta and Focus have been the number one and two best sellers all year, with Fiesta on its own outselling the car ranges of all but five rival car makers. It is great to see our products featuring in TV ads, and if you haven’t yet seen the new ads for new Focus and all-new Mondeo, please look out for them. I was delighted, with Stephen Odell, to welcome prime minister David Cameron and business secretary Vince Cable to Dagenham for the announcement of an additional £190 million investment in the plant to produce an advanced new 2.0-litre diesel engine, which will create 318 new jobs. Two weeks later we had another Ford Dagenham visit from Priti Patel MP, the exchequer secretary to the Treasury who, like David Cameron and Vince Cable, wanted to hear about the technology and the people who will make that investment – which includes £8.9 million from the Government – work. She also wanted to learn about Ford’s work encouraging women into STEM (science, technology, engineering or maths) studies and engineering careers, and I would like to thank engineers Julie McIlroy, Tamsin O’Hagan, Sarah Cartwright, Grace Dalton, Katy-Jane Wells, Kerry Smith, Carly Hinton, Alexandra Walker, Dawn Sharp, Hannah Pearlman and Kirsty Williams who were there to meet her. They are all exceptional ambassadors for the Government’s Your Life initiative to encourage young people to study STEM subjects, which Ford is co-sponsoring. In early November, Graham Hoare, Ford director of global engineering operations, attended the opening of the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) at Warwick University, where Vince Cable announced £1 billion funding from Government and industry to support low carbon vehicle technology development in the UK. Part of the announcement was for a London Advanced Propulsion Centre located on the Olympic Park. Ford is closely involved in these discussions and is playing an active role as part of one of the industrial consortiums that are supported by the APC. Finally, as this is my last column before Christmas, I would like to thank everyone for their support during the year, and I wish each of you a restful and peaceful holiday. According to the official figures for October from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT): n Ford was market leader for cars, commercial vehicles and total vehicle sales n Fiesta and Focus were number one and two in October and year to date n Transit nameplate sales would place the brand third in UK total vehicle sales n Ford’s total vehicle sales lead over its nearest rival now exceeds 100,000. Ford of Britain chairman and managing director, Mark Ovenden, said: “In a buoyant UK market, Ford beat the total vehicle sales growth in October, to maintain our strong sales momentum. “Fiesta and Focus continue to lead the UK market while the success of our extended Ford CV family can be measured by the fact that total Transit nameplate sales exceed those of any car – apart from Fiesta “Fiesta on its own outsells the car ranges of all but five of Ford’s rival car makers” and Focus. These sales results are founded on a continuous stream of new models and innovative technology delivered through our dealer partners, who make up the strongest network in the UK.” The official figures released by the SMMT show that total UK car sales in October were up 14.2 per cent at 179,714, compared with October 2013. Ford’s October car sales were 24,221, up from 21,325 in October 2013. For the year to date (end October) total UK car sales were 2,137,910, up 9.5 per cent compared with the same period in 2013, while Ford car sales for this period were 286,975, up from 270,342. Ford Fiesta’s total registrations of 116,087 for the year to date make it the UK best seller by a significant margin. This sales total would place it seventh in the list of top-selling car manufacturers, meaning that Fiesta on its own outsells the car ranges of all but five of Ford’s rival car makers. Ford’s broad customer appeal across its car range is demonstrated by Fiesta, B-MAX, Focus, C-MAX, Kuga and Galaxy all being placed in the top three in their respective market segments. UK commercial vehicle (CV) sales in October were up 25.4 per cent at 35,495, compared with October 2013. Ford CV sales in October were up 30.4 per cent at 7,527, compared with October 2013. For the year to date total UK CV sales were up 13.6 per cent at 309,705, compared with the same period in 2013. Total sales of Ford CVs for the year to date were up 18.8 per cent at 72,905, compared with 2013. The full availability of Ford’s extended CV family helped deliver Ford light commercial sales and share increases in October (1,946 and 23.9 per cent versus 479 and 6.6 per cent in October 2013) and for the year to date (14,589 and 17.9 per cent versus 8,594 and 10.8 per cent for the same period in 2013). Ford News December 2014 / January 2015 5 Mustang launched at Warley Ford of Britain chairman and managing director Mark Ovenden pulled the covers off a Ford Mustang in the Warley foyer, to the delight of staff waiting to get a close look at the iconic car. The Mustang, which will be on sale in the UK next autumn and can be ordered in the meantime through Ford dealers, will deliver world-class levels of performance and refinement, as well as classic design elements. These include the sleek profile, three-dimensional, tri-bar taillamps and signature trapezoidal grille with Mustang pony emblem. The new Mustang also features all-new front and rear suspension systems and standard Performance Pack chassis tuning for Europe. Ford’s acclaimed 5.0 litre V8 engine produces 418PS and 524Nm of torque, and the 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine delivers 314PS and 434Nm. Before unveiling the Mustang, Mark showed off the new Ford Focus ST, which is on sale now with both petrol and diesel powertrains. Ford of Britain chairman and managing director Mark Ovenden poses with the Mustang, above right, after unveiling it in the Warley foyer, right Ford College staff hit the road to help train UK dealers Staff from the Ford College at Daventry took to the road during the autumn to help prepare UK dealers for some important changes in the way training is delivered to workshop personnel. In a series of roadshow meetings around the country, the Ford College team explained the new technical training curriculum which will apply to all dealer technicians from the start of 2015. The new curriculum and associated training courses have been developed following consultation with the dealer network, and will help provide a more flexible spread of skills within each dealer. “We’ve listened carefully to feedback from the dealer body, and have developed a training map for technicians which supports their business needs more closely,” explained Ford College development and quality manager Nigel Stimpson. “We wanted to ensure that technicians are able to explore specialist routes during the training, so that dealer workshops have access to a broader mix of skills to meet customer needs. The roadshows were a great way of explaining the changes, and giving dealers the chance to ask any questions before the new system went into operation,” added Nigel. From January 2015, the new curriculum caters for two different categories of workshop staff: Ford Trained Technicians, and the higher level Ford Qualified Technicians. Under the new curriculum, 100 per cent of dealer technicians are trained by Ford College, and each dealer must have 40 per cent of technicians at Ford Trained level, and 60 per cent at Ford Qualified level, with a minimum number of specialists in body, chassis, and powertrain and electrical. The roadshow meetings also highlighted the role of eLearning modules as a vital part of the training courses, and stressed the importance of allowing delegates some preparation time before attending to help them maximise the benefits of the training. 6 Ford News December 2014 / January 2015 Holly wins Ford Prize for Women Cambridge undergraduate Holly Giles has won the inaugural Ford Prize for Women in STEM Study competition, which recognises the achievements of women studying STEM-based subjects. It recognises that women are traditionally under-represented in STEM (science, technology, engineering or maths) studies and related professions and acknowledges the achievements of women in STEM, encouraging other women to become involved. The £1,000 cash prize – and four runners-up prizes of £250 – was for a female student in her first year of a STEM degree, who can demonstrate how she is inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers and technologists. Holly, who is in the first year of a natural sciences degree at Cambridge, “clearly demonstrated her skills as a great ambassador promoting the study of STEM subjects, and conveyed her commitment for encouraging others,” said Dunton-based university programmes specialist Angela Morley. Holly, who last year was awarded a Nuffield scholarship, has been given the opportunity to maintain a link with Ford throughout her studies via a personal Ford mentor. Ford’s commitment includes being one of eight main corporate sponsors of the Your Life campaign to ensure young adults in the UK have the maths and science skills needed to succeed in the current competitive global economy. Your Life is a Government initiative with the aim of boosting young people’s participation in STEM subjects, and is is targeted at 14-16 year olds, a key educational decision-making time. Your Life also aims to inspire young people, especially girls, to study maths and physics as a gateway into wide-ranging careers while also triggering employers to recruit and retain this talent. As part of the campaign, Ford is on track to increase the number of registered female STEMNET ambassadors by 30% by the end of this year and to double the number of female registered participants and mentors on the IMechE and IET monitored professional development schemes by May 2015. Ford of Europe chief operating officer Barb Samardzich, one of the senior figures on the campaign’s corporate advisory board, said: “Your Life is a campaign that Ford recognises has the potential to revolutionise the way that young people in the UK see the opportunities offered by science and maths. We have a responsibility to ensure that young people know that sciences can lead to all sorts of exciting careers and Ford is playing its part.” Holly Giles, winner of the Ford Prize for Women in STEM Study Transit again tops fleet reliability survey The Ford Transit has been crowned Britain’s most reliable van for the third successive year and the seventh time in eight years, and Ford is the most reliable manufacturer, also for the third year running and for the seventh year out of eight in surveys carried out by Fleet News. The Transit and Ford topped the tables in the 2014 FN50 light commercial vehicle reliability survey, which assessed the reliability of both manufacturers and models, based on feedback from Britain’s leading leasing companies. Importantly, the survey is based on solid fact, rather than opinion. Only multi-marque leasing companies are included in the annual survey, which looks at the number of breakdowns per 100 units of each vehicle model on their fleets. The FN50 reliability results back up findings from Ford’s own performance tracking process, which monitors quality and customer satisfaction with new vehicles after three to four months in service. n The Ford S-MAX has been named Britain’s Best MPV in the National Car Awards, whose editor-in-chief, Sue Baker, said: “Space and pace endear the S-MAX to owners, and their views have propelled it into the number one position.” Ford News December 2014 / January 2015 7 Ford and AA extend fleet supply deal Around 85,000 AA Driving School learners a year will be at the wheel of Britain’s most popular cars, the Ford Fiesta and Ford Focus. Ford’s exclusive supply agreement with AA Driving School, originally struck in 1998, has been extended for a further three years, up to the middle of 2017, with the school’s franchised instructors taking delivery of around 2,000 new Ford models annually. With fuel economy a key priority for the instructors, the models powered by the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engines are expected to be the top choice. “We will be offering them the Focus EcoBoost and we expect that it, and the Fiesta EcoBoost, will get the biggest take-up because they offer such fantastic fuel economy,” said the AA’s head of fleet, Sarah Dopson. “We are very pleased to be continuing this longstanding agreement for a further three years. We are constantly benchmarking and Ford always comes out with the best model range, the cars most suitable for purpose, and with the most competitive pricing.” Ford’s direct sales business manager, James Powell, added: “This is not only great news for Ford in terms of the large number of new models being delivered to the AA Driving School over the coming three years. It means also that thousands of newcomers will learn the art of driving at the wheel of a Ford, and that in turn means a Ford will be their natural choice when they pass their test and buy their first car.” AA instructors also provide the tuition for Ford’s free driver training programme – Driving Skills for Life – designed to fast-track the skills and experience of new drivers after they have passed their practical test. 11 Transit Couriers join Scottish emergency service fleet The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS), an amalgamation of Scotland’s eight regional fire and rescue services, has added 11 Ford Transit Couriers to its nationwide fleet. Their work will chiefly involve fire prevention – carrying equipment and personnel to assess fire risks in buildings and as part of fire safety demonstrations. The Transit Courier is ideal for the role, said SFRS fleet manager Scott Roberts: “It’s a small van but the load space within is excellent and more than adequate for the job, but our chief concerns are whole-life costs and ease of maintenance. When you have a region to cover as large as Scotland, an extensive dealer network is vital and, of course, Ford has a dealer in nearly every large town.” The service has also selected the Transit Custom for deployment in the Highlands, where double cab-in-van models perform an essential function as a back-up to fire-fighting appliances, carrying breathing equipment and other tools. Water rescue missions are part of the SFRS’ work and the 4x4 Ford Ranger is its choice for towing the service’s rescue craft. The Ford Focus is meanwhile carving a niche for itself as an effective fast-response vehicle. Ford direct sales manager, Terry Adams, said: “For the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, the extensive Ford range of cars and commercial vehicles ticks all the boxes, with a model ideal for every function within the service. Ford provides an unrivalled customisation service for ‘blue-light’ applications, and of course its service network across the UK is second to none.” 8 Ford News December 2014 / January 2015 Ford racers win MPG challenge Formula Ford drivers Harrison Scott and Louise Richardson drove a Fiesta ST to victory in the ALD Automotive/Fleet World MPG Marathon, achieving the biggest improvement in fuel consumption over their car’s official figures. Formula Ford cars are powered by the same 1.6-litre EcoBoost engine as the acclaimed Fiesta ST, which recorded 75.77mpg over 307.4 miles to win the Best Improvement award by improving on the car’s declared combined economy figure of 47.9mpg, by 58 per cent. “It was a very different challenge to the driving I am used to,” said 18-year-old Harrison, who is one of six finalists for the prestigious McLaren BRDC Autosport Award. “The Fiesta ST is a seriously quick car but, if you ease off, and carefully optimise all of its fuel-efficient capabilities, it’s surprising how little fuel it consumes.” The 182PS ST is Ford’s fastest-ever production Fiesta, able to sprint from 0-62mph in under seven seconds and with a top speed of 139mph. It is the first Fiesta ST to use Ford’s EcoBoost engine technology, which this summer won International Engine of the Year for the third year in succession. The EcoBoost’s low weight contributes towards improved handling and economy, and features technologies including turbocharging, high-pressure direct fuel-injection and twin-independent variable cam timing. Close behind was a Focus ST which achieved 65.78mpg, an improvement of more than 44 per cent on its official combined economy figure. The Ford Fiesta ECOnetic was the outright winner of the MPG Marathon in 2012 and 2013, and defending champions Nick Chapman and Rosemary Homer returned at the wheel of another 1.6-litre Fiesta ECOnetic diesel, which returned 97.08mpg this year, missing out on the best overall mpg prize by a fraction. Formula Ford racers Harrison Scott and Louise Richardson with their MPG Marathon-winning Fiesta ST Upgrades for Kuga range The Ford Kuga is now available with significant upgrades that include the most powerful diesel powertrain to date. Improvements to the Kuga’s diesel and petrol engine range also deliver lower CO2 emissions. Kuga is offered with more advanced technologies as standard that help reduce fuel consumption and lower emissions, including Auto-Start-Stop and Active Grille Shutter. It is also the first Ford to be offered in bold new colour Tiger Eye Metallic. Peak power of Ford’s 2.0-litre TDCi diesel engine, which powered 95 per cent of the Kugas sold in the UK during the first nine months of 2014, has now increased by 17PS to 180PS, with peak torque now 400Nm, up from 340Nm. Ford is introducing its new 1.5-litre EcoBoost petrol engine to Kuga, reducing CO2 emissions to 143g/km from 154g/km – an improvement of more than seven per cent over the outgoing 1.6-litre EcoBoost engine. Also available is a 150PS 2.0-litre TDCi option that delivers 122g/km CO2 – an improvement of 12 per cent. Kuga’s Ford SYNC with AppLink will now enable drivers to voice-activate apps, which already include leading music-streaming service Spotify, Audioteka, Glympse and Radioplayer. Focus ST on sale The new Focus ST 12-model range has gone on sale ahead of first deliveries from February 2015. A new sports exterior design, enhanced and improved interior, two engines, three series and two bodystyles – estate and five-door hatch – make up the hot new Focus ST range. Both the 250PS EcoBoost petrol and 185PS TDCi diesel 2.0-litre engines are offered in the ST-1, ST-2 and ST-3. The diesel's emission figure is only 110g CO2/km, while the CO2 output of the petrol engine is reduced by 10g to 159g. In addition to the full ST body styling kit, sport tuned suspension and 18-inch unique ST alloy wheel standard features on the Focus ST-1, ST-2 has LED daytime running lights as standard and upgrades on the top ST-3 include ‘Rock Metallic’ alloys with red brake callipers, illuminated scuff plates, privacy glass, SYNC 2 with 8-inch touchscreen and cruise control with speed limiter. Both petrol and diesel models offer Auto-Start-Stop for the first time, improving the EcoBoost engine version’s fuel efficiency by six per cent and making it the most fuel-efficient petrol Focus ST ever. Ford News December 2014 / January 2015 9 Tickled pink! Ford people in Dunton and Warley baked cakes and bought flowers to raise money for a cancer charity The Pink Day sale of pink roses and pink cakes raised £1,700 at Dunton and £1,669 at Warley for the Breakthrough Breast Cancer charity. “My thanks to everyone involved. We absolutely could not have achieved this without everyone’s involvement including everyone who bought cakes – fantastic effort,” said Ford Credit Europe IT director Jayne Miles, one of the organisers. “I have no idea how many cakes we had, but they completely covered seven long tables – and we sold all 700 roses at Warley.” Her words were echoed by Dunton-based powertrain manager Wendy Graham, who said: “Thank you to all those to supported the event by donating their time, baking and making purchases on the day.” Wendy Graham, Alex Walker and Hope Cansdale at Dunton. Right: Debbie Robinson and Simon Webb at Dunton Anthony steps out for cancer centre Bridgend engine plant line worker Anthony Morgan has begun a series of charity fund-raising walks in memory of his late father, who was one of the first employees at the plant in the late 1970s. Anthony, son of Ron Morgan who retired in 2006, has completed the first of his walks in aid of Velindre Hospital, Cardiff. Anthony walked along the Wales coastal path the 27 miles from Barry to Bridgend and raised about £1,000 for the cancer treatment centre, and now plans to do more sections in future to keep adding to the fund. “I have always liked walking and appreciate getting out into the fresh air so I thought this would be a good way of raising money for the hospital which looked after my father so well,” said Anthony. “It took me nine hours to do the coastal path around South Wales and I started out when it was dark so I could meet my family in the daylight at the end. “I was on my own and thinking about my father as I walked so it was emotional for me but seeing my family at the end made it all worthwhile.” He took his tablet computer with him and recorded sections of the journey and the dramatic scenery along the way as a record of his achievement. Anthony has led other walking groups around Mid-Glamorgan but this was his first charity walk in memory of his father and it will not be his last. “I have been thinking of possibly doing more of the Welsh coastal path in sections over coming months but it will need some planning and I will give it thought over the winter,” he added. He is also considering walking from the Brecon Beacons to Maesteg. Marcus Dain, whose career took him from apprentice to manager of critical concerns, was one of the three dozen likely lads from all over England who won coveted places on Ford’s student-apprenticeship scheme in that year. Fifty years on, many of these same student-apprentices, now all retired after up to 40 years of Company service, still meet regularly for lunch. “Ford’s student-apprenticeship scheme of the 1960s was the envy of industry. For four years, students alternated six-month periods at college studying for their national certificate with training at the Ford trade school, where they learned how to operate all the principal manufacturing machine tools, as well as spending time working in different areas of the Company, gaining practical experience,” said Marcus. Along the way, Ford made sure that they were exposed to the leading-edge developments of the day and they remember the thrill of being shown around the prototype Ford GT40 which was about to sweep the board at Le Mans in 1966. The success of From left: Brian Wells, Rob Herrick, John Ford, Nick Burnell, Chas Morlham, Marcus Dain, Nick Miller (behind Marcus Dain), Dave Hutchinson, Dom Burnell (twin brother of Nick Burnell), Al Pereira, Barnabas Greenyer, Ken O’Brien, Ian Buller, John Owers, Dick Eling the scheme was evident from the wide range of positions of responsibility in every operational activity which these young men went on to occupy. Marcus added: “Ford was an extraordinary company to work for. “I recall Henry Ford once describing it as “the family of Ford” and you had to work for the company to understand why he described it thus. As manager of critical concerns, I dealt extensively with other motor manufacturers and it was always apparent that Ford was unique in this respect; none of our competitors understood the feeling of “belonging” which pervaded employment with Ford.” Ford News December 2014 / January 2015 11 VIPs welcome £190m Prime minister David Cameron and business secretary Vince Cable welcome Ford’s ‘vote of confidence’ in UK manufacturing Prime minister David Cameron and business secretary Vince Cable have welcomed Ford’s investment of an additional £190 million in its Dagenham site to produce an advanced new engine and the Company’s commitment to Dagenham and the UK. Mr Cameron said when he and Mr Cable visited the plant that it was “a vote of confidence in our long-term economic plan to back business, create more jobs and secure a brighter future for Britain.” Mr Cable said it was “testament to the strength of our automotive sector.” Ford’s investment is to produce an all-new advanced technology 2.0-litre diesel engine for cars and commercial vehicles. This investment includes £8.9 million from the Government’s regional growth fund. Ford is creating 318 new jobs connected with this investment. The announcement confirms the second phase of investment in the new engine programme following the original investment of £287 million with support from the Government’s regional growth fund. This brings the total invested in the project to in excess of £475 million, and underlines Ford’s commitment to engine manufacture at Dagenham. State of the art The first phase of investment relates to the production of state-of-the-art low carbon 2.0-litre diesel engines for Ford commercial vehicles globally. The second phase is for low carbon, 2.0-litre diesel engines for cars. This all-new range of low carbon 2.0-litre diesel engines for cars and CVs has been designed and developed at Dagenham and Dunton. This latest diesel engine programme at Dagenham is part of a £1.5 billion UK investment by Ford in low-carbon and environmentally friendly engine and vehicle technology over five years. The first ‘phase one’ engines will come off the line towards the end of next year. Production capacity will be up to 350,000 units per year – one every 30 seconds – and will be installed in Ford commercial vehicles from 2016. This new, low carbon,Dagenham-built 2.0 litre advanced diesel engine will deliver dramatically lower NOx emissions, satisfying the air quality requirements of the London mayor’s proposed ultra low emission zone (ULEZ). The second phase of engine production is scheduled to start in 2017, with the first installation in Ford cars planned for 2018. The added capacity of up to 150,000 units for this phase brings the total annual capacity for the all-new engine range to up to half a million units. Ford executive vice president, Europe, Middle East and Africa, Stephen Odell, said: “The overall investment of over £475 million, supported by the UK Government, underlines Ford’s commitment to the UK. “This all-new, state-of-the-art, low carbon diesel engine has not only been designed and developed here it will be manufactured by Ford in the UK too. And it will be great for UK plc as these engines will be exported to markets around the world.” Ford produces petrol engines at Bridgend and diesel engines at Dagenham. Total production from the two plants exceeded 1.5 million engines in 2013. 12 Ford News December 2014 / January 2015 David Cameron talking to Ford apprentices, top, on the line, centre, and with Chris Cowell, Ray Gibbs (both trades union), Mark Ovenden, Kenny Amos, Terry Burns (both TU), David Cameron, Stephen Odell, Vince Cable, Mick Presham (TU) and Martin Everitt n David Cameron said: “I welcome Ford’s commitment to Dagenham and the UK, which is a vote of confidence in our economic plan to back business, create more jobs and secure a brighter future. She said, after a tour of the new 2.0-litre diesel engine line: “It was fantastic to visit the engine facility and see how investment from the Government’s Regional Growth Fund is helping create hundreds of new jobs in the area.” Mrs Patel added: “The funding demonstrates the Government’s commitment to supporting the automotive sector, as part of our longterm economic plan to back businesses and create more jobs for hardworking people.” She went on to Dagenham Diesel Centre and during her visit was able to see first-hand Ford’s commitment to encouraging young people into engineering when she was introduced to eleven young women engineers and apprentices. Ford News December 2014 / January 2015 13 Ford College to offer webinars In an innovative pilot programme, Ford College is using webinars for the first time to help deliver better quality training for UK dealers, and to minimise the time and cost for delegates to attend. During the pilot, delegates are being invited to attend short webinar sessions both before and after their main training course. These sessions enable delegates to gain a better understanding about the training, ask any questions, and maximise the benefit of the classroom time. This can be achieved without requiring the delegates to leave the dealership, optimising the use of time and reducing the expenses. “Webinars can help us achieve better outcomes from our training, while minimising the time which delegates spend away from the dealership,” said Ford College curriculum manager Jackie White. “This pilot provides a great opportunity to trial the technology, and explore the benefits that it can bring. “Looking further ahead, we also believe that webinars could have a major impact on how we deliver training, allowing us to offer full courses via the internet, while still providing engaging content and lots of interaction with the tutor.” The pilot began in September, and involves two 45-minute sessions for delegates attending the Introduction to Warranty and Service Managers Assessment courses. The webinars are hosted by the course tutor, allowing delegates to gain a clear idea about the objectives of the training, and to think about their own personal training goals. The post-course webinar then gives a chance for delegates to reflect on how they have been able to put the training into action. To participate in the sessions, dealerships are able to utilise a standard PC equipped with a webcam and a headset, a suitable internet connection, and a quiet location for the delegate to join the meeting. Dealers preparing for Tech Live event Tech Live will help dealers introduce high-tech features on the new Mondeo and Focus to customers Ford dealers across the country are inviting customers to sample the latest Ford technologies for themselves during a ‘Tech Live’ event. Participating dealers will have a line-up of the latest technology-packed Ford vehicles including the new Focus and, at many dealerships, the all-new Mondeo. ‘Tech Live’ begins on Friday 16 January and runs through the weekend. As well as demonstrating the technologies on static vehicles, some dealerships will be offering on-road demo drives and some will have videos showing the technology in action. “We want as many customers as possible to come along and experience Ford’s superb technology for themselves,” said Ford of Britain sales operations manager Bob Garwood. SYNC 2, launching on the new Focus, enables drivers to control key in-car systems using voice commands and a new high-resolution eight-inch colour touch screen. As well as having the incredible safety feature of being able to contact the emergency services in the event of an accident the SYNC 2 features in the new Focus make it easier to control the car’s entertainment system, climate control, satellite navigation and linked mobile devices using voice commands. SYNC 2 will also be introduced as standard on the all-new Mondeo. Focus is also the launch pad for new technology Enhanced Transitional Stability that can predict when a car might skid – and by stepping in early could prevent the driver from losing control in the first place. Focus and Mondeo both feature an advanced version of Active Park Assist featuring Perpendicular Parking which enables drivers to detect suitable spaces and reverse in hands-free. Park-Out Assist helps drivers to exit parking spaces and Side Parking Aid warns of obstacles to the side, front and rear. Among other new Focus technologies are Blind Spot Information System with Cross Traffic Alert. The all-new Ford Mondeo marks the global debut of a new pedestrian detection technology, Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection, that could help reduce the severity of accidents or help drivers avoid them altogether. The Ford Kuga illustrates customer demand for new technologies: around a third of vehicles are sold with Rear View Camera and more than half with Active Park Assist. Kuga’s other standard or available technologies include Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, Hands-Free Tailgate, Blind Spot Information System, Active City Stop, Lane Keeping Aid, Lane Keeping Alert, Auto High Beam, Driver Alert and Traffic Sign Recognition. Daventry college construction milestone Installing the roofing panels 14 Ford News December 2014 / January 2015 Construction of the new Ford College training centre at Daventry has reached its next major milestone as the roof panels are put into place on the former warehouse building. The latest pictures of the state-of-the-art training facility taken at the end of October show the exterior structure taking shape, while fabrication work on the internal mezzanine floor framework continues at an off-site location. At the same time, additional works on the building’s drainage system and the concrete foundation slab prepare the structure ready for the next stage of construction. Once operational in 2015, the new Ford College facility will create a completely new training centre of excellence for technicians, sales staff and management from Ford’s UK dealer network. The facility will take over the training functions which are currently split between the existing locations at the Henry Ford College in Loughborough and the Technical Training College in Daventry. EDAP exercise studio celebrates 10 years The exercise studio run by Dunton EDAP celebrated 10 years of keeping Ford employees fit in October. Powertrain director Brian Wolfe funded a cake to celebrate the landmark, attended by studio instructors and users of the fitness centre. Dunton EDAP administrator Anne Christmas said that the studio timetable currently offers 12 lunchtime and four after-work classes, ranging from yoga, pilates, cardio pump, kettle bells, ‘Fight Klub’ and many more. She added that the studio is going from strength to strength, with around 120 members regularly using its facilities. n Anyone interested in taking part in the studio classes or any of the other EDAP courses on offer at Dunton should contact either Anne on extension 2982 (or via email at achristm@ ford.com) or Jane Haydon, extension 3360 (or email [email protected]) Cutting the celebration cake, above, are instructors Tracey Roche, Jan McCrerie and Sarah Brand. Below: gym users gather to mark the 10th anniversary Liverpool raises Macmillan cash The wife of one of Liverpool’s Transport Operations (TOps) drivers has helped to raise £1,200 for Macmillan Cancer Support. Joan O’Callaghan, whose husband Kevin works on TOps’ Outbound fleet, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in November 2013 and had a subsequent six-month course of chemotherapy. She particularly wanted to do something for the charity, as she said Macmillan was a huge help to her during her treatment, and so TOps Liverpool took part in the Macmillan Coffee Joan O'Callaghan Morning on 26 September. Joan said: “On the day I was given my diagnosis, I was introduced to a Macmillan specialist nurse, who immediately began to put my mind at rest. Since then, I have had a lot of contact with the Macmillan nurses and find they are a great source of comfort and information. “I wanted to do the coffee morning at Ford to show my support for them and the work they do.” The cash was raised between the Inbound and Outbound fleets at Speke, who enjoyed some amazing cakes, all baked by Joan, while a hamper filled with homemade jams and chutneys was raffled, with the top prize going to TOps’ John Gargan. Joan added: “I am really proud and would like to thank everyone at TOps in Liverpool, who helped us to raise this fantastic amount.” n To find out more about the work Macmillan does, go to www.macmillan.org.uk. Ford News December 2014 / January 2015 15 Larain thanks DDC for fund-raising effort Engineer off on Indian bike journey A Dunton engineer hoping to ride his motorcycle from London to India in 15 days has set off on his epic journey across Europe and Asia. Sushanth Shetty is hoping to set a world record by getting from the English capital to the Indian border, a distance of 5,592 miles, in a little over two weeks, riding on a specially-prepared Suzuki Hayabusa motorcycle. He was originally scheduled to set off on 4 October but unfortunately a knee injury and subsequent surgery delayed his start to 25 October. As Ford News went to press, large gasoline engine programmes engineer Sushanth was on his way across Europe – using as much of the German autobahn motorway network as he could to save time later on the journey! He is riding solo and hopes to cover around 373 miles per day of riding, staying with local people en route by utilising the Couchsurfing internet community. You can find out more about Sushanth’s journey to India by going to his website, www. theeastindiaexpress.com. Charity day raises £309 The TrustFord Alperton site held a Taste of India day at its north London dealership which raised a total of £309 for Cancer Research UK. Dealer staff wearing Punjabi costumes and jewellery set up a stall, played Indian music and served up home-made food – and it proved so popular they ran out of food. 16 Presenting the cheque for £700 to George Morgan’s family are Ford fund-raising leader Larain Powell (left) and Ford steward Andy Catrell. Centre are George and his mum Jade, and grandmother Teresa Dagenham Diesel Centre (DDC) Lion red shift employee Larain Powell wants to thank her generous colleagues for raising £700 in support of a seriously ill young boy. Larain – who is a tireless fundraiser at DDC, having run campaigns for a number of good causes during the past 20 years – wanted to do something to help the family of local child George Morgan, who suffered brain damage at birth as a result of a lack of oxygen. George requires round-the-clock support and his family are hoping to raise £10,000 for physio- therapy sessions for him, with the £700 from Ford representing a significant step towards the target. George’s mother Jade said: “It’s amazing to think people we don’t know are helping us to raise money for George. We are so grateful to Larain and everyone at Ford for the donation.” Larain added: “I’ve always tried to raise money for various charities and good causes over the years, but it’s about the people we help – and it’s thanks to Ford employees on the Dagenham estate that we’ve managed to collect this wonderful amount for George.” Volunteers help charities A team of Dunton-based marketing services and communications and drivetrain systems engineering employees (some pictured above) spent a day helping two local charities: the Lighthouse Furniture Project in Hutton and Hamelin Trust in Rochford. The Lighthouse Furniture Project provides furniture and household items to those in need: the Dunton team helped out by painting a warehouse, entrance hall, kitchen, stairs and landing. The Hamelin Trust supports disabled people and their families in the local area. Its five-acre site has a hydrotherapy pool, respite care home and a horticultural project for adults with learning disabilities. The team of 44 from Dunton cleared an overgrown courtyard and woodland walk, removed ivy from walls, removed fencing, trimmed trees, painted fencing, cleaned decking in a sensory garden and fought the brambles. A cheque for £200 was presented to Nicky Evans of Hamelin Trust on behalf of the Dunton Charity Committee. n For further information visit www.lighthousefurniture.org or www.hamelintrust.org.uk Ford News December 2014 / January 2015 Bridgend walkers The Ford Walking Club at Bridgend undertook two hard walks in the Fort William and Glencoe area of Scotland. Long standing member and club chairman Roy Fowler said: “It was hard going but an enjoyable experience.” He added that it was good to see plant retirees Jeff Rees, Huw Thomas, Owen Harries and Glanville Webley on the trip. Club members tackled Ben Nevis and landmark Pap Of Glencoe over their weekend break. The group are pictured before their climb of Ben Nevis. Dagenham retirees look for new faces A group that allows former Dagenham Engine Plant (DEP) employees to meet up for regular day trips is looking for new members. The Ford DEP Retirees Group is run by Les Miller, Alf Richards and Naresh Sharma, who got together in Ilford one afternoon and had such a good time reminiscing that they decided to make it a regular occurrence. The group meets on the first Thursday of every month, although it can be flexible if there’s a big event happening, and goes on days out around London. Some of the trips have seen the DEP retirees go to the London Boat Show, the Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park, a Westminster-Hampton Court boat trip, the Museum of London and travelling from Tower Hill to Southend on the Waverley paddle steamer, passing DEP on the way. Les said: “We really enjoyed our first meeting and decided we wanted to invite other DEP retirees along as well. The numbers have swelled, so we now meet at The World’s Inn near Romford station for a good breakfast before starting the day. “We’d love to have more people on the meets and on our Facebook page, Ford DEP Retirees Group – it’s open to anyone who has worked at DEP.” n If you want to join the group, email Les Miller at [email protected] or go to www.facebook.com and search for ‘Ford DEP Retirees Group’. UK CLAD winners announced The importance of diversity was spelled out by Ford executive vice-president and president, Europe, Middle East and Africa Stephen Odell at the presentation ceremony for the Chairman’s Leadership Awards for Diversity (CLAD). “There are many reasons why diversity is important. If you were to break it down on a business basis, our customers are different and diverse. It is important that we understand and reflect this diversity and learn from our customers,” he said. Also speaking at the ceremony in Cologne, Ford of Europe vice president, human resources, Donya Urwin, said: “Diversity is an incredibly important issue.” UK winners were: Valuing a Diverse Workforce – Marina Hallworth, marketing, sales and service; Building a Respectful and Inclusive Environment – Peter Davies, finance; Professional Engineering Network – product development; Valuing Work Life Flexibility – Stephen Rand, purchasing; Developing External Partnerships – Sarah Haslam, product development; Elutec – product development. The team took on the challenge, and after creating a sensory garden for the hospice back in late 2010 out of wooden sleepers, it was suggested to use that same theme for this project. In two days they installed the sleepers, created a new flower bed and reinstated the hospice sign. Chris Cox, the hospice’s head of corporate services, said: “We have been so lucky, not only getting the grant from Ford, but also in having the access to the Ford volunteers to help us with this project. The teams that come to the hospice from Ford always work hard and we know we can rely on them to do a quality job. There is still some money remaining from the grant so we will be planning further projects for the teams to be involved in, in the coming months.” Ford News December 2014 / January 2015 17 Dunton hosts Bring A Child To Work Day Children aged between 11 and 13 got an insight into what goes on within Dunton at the end of October. Bring A Child To Work Day saw 100 children visit the Essex technical centre to look round areas such as rapid prototyping, spray paint, clay modelling, Hyge (the crash-testing area) and also the departments concentrating on noise, vibration and harshness. There were passenger rides in RS models – and a Transit – on the special surfaces track, which the children thoroughly enjoyed. One of them, 11-year-old Niamh Ambrose, wrote afterwards: “I was so excited to go to my dad’s work.” Her day started with spray painting a plastic car, which the children were allowed to take home, and progressed through test track rides. They also visited the environmental chambers where the children could write their names on an ice-covered car “which was fun”, then a hunt for a skull and crossbones buried in a sand pit in the 3D printing area. The special guests were also allowed to watch a live crash test. “At the end of the fun and educational day we went to collect our cars that we spray painted. We also got a goodie bag. “That was the end of our very exciting day at Ford,” said Niamh, who went along to Dunton for the event with her dad Mark. Bring A Child To Work Day has been running for more than 10 years at Dunton now and is always well attended, with the events, community and outreach department leading the organisation. Nicola Gregory, from the department, said: “Support from all areas of Dunton and chaperones for the children ensure it is truly a team event. “Without everyone’s help it wouldn’t be possible to put on such a successful day.” 18 Kerry hopes to offer Christmas cheer Kerry Smith with some of the blankets collected The first female machining supervisor at Dagenham engine plant is asking for donations of spare blankets and food to help a good cause this Christmas. Kerry Smith spends every December volunteering for Crisis, a charity which helps homeless and vulnerable people stave off loneliness during the festive period by offering safe places to stay. Crisis London will open its doors on 23 December this year, closing on the evening of 29 December, and Kerry will spend every day of that period volunteering for the charity, as well as helping out with organisation in the run-up. Kerry said: “This year, my role will be as a service organiser for Crisis at Christmas. It’s a big responsibility but one I thoroughly enjoy as it’s for such a worthwhile cause. “Anyone who is homeless or vulnerable – along with their pets, if necessary – can stay with Crisis during Christmas, and while there we offer life-changing services to help them improve their situation, such as education and employment training. We even offer them a little TLC; they can have a haircut or an eye test, among other services. “It is such a humbling experience. The charity relies heavily on donations, but if that isn’t possible for people, anyone with a little time on their hands over the Christmas period should think about volunteering.” n To find out more about the charity, go to www.crisis.org.uk. If you can help out with donations or by volunteering, please contact Kerry on [email protected]. In the pink at Daventry Employees at Daventry have embarked on some colourful fund-raising during the autumn, as they have changed out of their regular workwear in aid of two worthy charities. The Daventry team joined the national Wear it Pink campaign in October, raising £250 from collections within the parts warehouse and front offices. The donations from the site contribute to the over £2 million raised by the fundraising event each year, which supports the campaign to fund life-saving breast cancer research. A few weeks earlier, Daventry employees swapped their work clothes for denim, participating in the Jeans for Genes fundraising day which raises money for Genetic Disorders UK, which aims to change the world for children born with genetic disorders. Together, the denim-clad employees across the site raised over £130 for the charity from individual contributions and other donations. Ford News December 2014 / January 2015 Fund-raisers Sally Merrill, Andy Sheppard and Sylvia Docherty Hallowe’en fund-raiser at Dunton The product definition team at Dunton held another successful Hallowe’en fundraising day, raising £876 for Macmillan Cancer Care, which brought their total over four years of fund-raising for the cancer charity to £5,109. “It started small with a few homemade donations and freeflowing tea and coffee,” said Jan Ord. “Over the past few years things have really gathered a pace and now we theme each event, with every year becoming more elaborate and competitive than the last. We now make props, go to town on the decorating and even dress up as the theme’s characters. “Past events have included a summer strawberry tea, Easter, two Hallowe’en parties , a Christmas feast and Alice In Wonderland at Easter. This year’s event was Harry Potter at Hallowe’en.” Alongside the home-made cakes, jams, curry and pumpkin pasties were donated raffle prizes, competitions and an auctioned ‘monsters’ cake bought by Maureen Graham to share with her team. “Thanks to everyone who donated, baked, iced, sewed, cut out, decorated, dressed up and generally helped,” said Jan. Jan Ord, Sue Howlett, ‘Harry Potter’ Michael Bines, Julie Liell and Jacqui Cosgree Elsewhere in Dunton, two Macmillan coffee mornings, organised by Debbie Holt and Sara Bird, together managed to raise nearly £700. Bridgend boost to Saturday Club Bridgend Engine Plant has helped deliver a major boost to a pioneering skills course for young people in South Wales. The Ford-Control 2K Saturday Club at Waterton Technology Centre has been running for 18 years but in a new development this autumn it has been given guaranteed support for three years. With two courses a year in spring and autumn and about 24 each time, that means over 140 young people aged 14-16 will get through the programme. They will join hundreds who have already undertaken the courses and gone on to careers in electrical, mechanical and control systems engineering. The courses qualify for academic credits on their CVs as well. The benefits of the courses were shown to Welsh government officials last year and this year the government’s advanced materials and manufacturing sector decided it would join the Bridgend plant in sponsoring the Saturday club. Each course runs for 12 weekends at Waterton from 9am to noon and students give up their free time to attend and learn their new skills, rotating in groups to cover all aspects over the three months. The current course is full and there are only a few places left for the spring 2015 programme, such is demand for an opportunity to gain such experience. Staff from BEP assist in the sessions covering electrical and mechanical engineering which are elements of what is required for industry and inside BEP. Control 2K administrator Denise Bowen said: “This is a unique course which offers a tremendous opportunity to young people to develop the knowledge, interest and skills for future careers and everyone who completes it always praises its content and tutors. “We are very grateful that Ford has backed it for so long and encouraged by the future support pledged by the Welsh government.” “From our talented bunch of bakers, we had about 25 contributions, including sponge cakes, cupcakes, traybakes and even a huge dragon cake,” said Sara Bird. It’s Movember time It’s once again the time of year for Ford’s Mo Bros and Sistas to raise money for men’s health causes – by supporting the growth of luxuriant facial hair. Movember is a worldwide fund-raising campaign which sees men around the world forgo shaving their top lip for the entire month, while women can show their support by either sporting fake moustaches or partaking in other fund-raising efforts. Movember is designed to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health issues, through the growth of moustaches and supporting events. Ford of Britain, as part of a global effort by the Company, has once again taken part this year and at the time of going to press, the 2013 grand total of £48,505 looked like it would be surpassed. The Company has been taking part for seven years now, with around £116,000 raised by Ford’s Mo Bros and Sistas. Ford’s 2013 amount was the highest yet raised by the Company, with 465 people registered as members of the network. Matt Loynes, the Dunton-based global coordinator of Movember, said: “Once again, the Ford Movember network has shown huge interest in taking part in this vital campaign. We will have the usual fine array of moustaches on show in Dunton, Dagenham and all sites across the UK, but there are other events – like a drop-in clinic at Dunton, involving the occupational health team. “We’re hopeful that the amount raised and the number of Mo Bros and Sistas taking part in Movember 2014 will be the highest figures we’ve yet seen.” n You can find out more about the Ford team by going to http:// mobro.co/onefordonemo, http://monetwork.co/ford, or https:// uk.movember.com. We’ll bring you a round-up and pictures of Movember 2014 in the next edition of Ford News. Ford News December 2014 / January 2015 19 Corporate challenge A team from Ford European warranty operations and three from Essex and east London dealership Allen Ford took part in a corporate team challenge run on the Olympic mountain bike circuit in Hadleigh, Essex, to raise money for Havens Hospices, which needs to raise £6.2 million a year. It is hoped that the event, over 3k and 5k distances, which was sponsored by Allen Ford, will have raised at least £20,000 for the hospices when all the sponsorship is in. The warranty operations team (Ian Murphy, Scott Bailey, Debbie Maginn and Gio Anastasi) raised £311. Bridgend turbine work Work was beginning on the erection of the 79-metre high wind turbine at Bridgend engine plant as Ford News went to press. The power generator at the top, with three near-30 metre long blades, will be commissioned before the end of the year. More than a year of planning has gone into the design, location, sourcing and engineering studies to ensure that the new turbine at the engine plant in Wales is as unobtrusive as possible. Dunton hosts Track Test Dunton will host the fifth Track Test Ten 10-mile run which takes in both the high-speed and multi-surface tracks, on behalf of St Luke’s Hospice, on 22 February, 2015. It was organised by apprenticeship training co-ordinator Ellie Gunn, whose son suffers from Ataxia, apprentice administrator Linda O’Brien, and apprentices John Bayliss, Davinder Dhaliwal, Spencer Wood and Pat Kiely. Ellie’s son was diagnosed with Friedreich’s Ataxia seven years ago. “He is now 16 years old and a full-time wheelchair user and dependant on others to do everyday tasks we take for granted,” said Ellie. “A big thank you to all the apprentices who helped raise money and awareness.” Ataxia is a type of neurological condition that affects balance, speech, and co-ordination. It is progressive, meaning it gets worse with time, until people become entirely dependent on others for all their needs. More than 10,000 people in the UK have ataxia and there is currently no cure. n Ataxia UK is the charity for people affected by ataxia. For more information visit www.ataxia.org.uk History help Ford Sunday League referee Dale Sharp has turned detective to fill in some gaps in Essex County FA’s history, but needs some help. “Essex County FA have all the winners of their county youth cups, but in a lot of cases the runners-up, scores and venues are unknown,” said Dale, who is looking for information on three historic games in the Essex County FA Butcher Under-18s Cup: n 1944/45 Ford Sports Juniors won the cup against whom? n 1953/54 Briggs Sports Minors vs St John’s YC n 1957/50 Briggs Sports Minors against? “If anyone can help, I would be most grateful,” said Dale, who can be contacted at [email protected] Christmas food bank collection In the run up to Christmas there will be a collection of goods for the local food bank in Brentwood, which is run by the Trussell Trust, the UK’s leading food bank charity, which operates more than 420 food banks nationally. “Nationally, in the year to 31 March, 2014, over 900,000 people in crisis were provided with emergency food supplies and, of these, over a third were children,” said Ford dealer systems manager Ann Cardus, who is organising the collection. “Demand for food banks has risen sharply in the last couple of years. The primary reasons people need help are delays in benefit payments and low income. “Brentwood may seem to be an affluent area but there is poverty on our doorstep. It costs very little to buy a couple of extra items when doing the grocery shop but that small gesture can have a big impact.” “The Trussell Trust website www.trusselltrust.org has a handy shopping list to help you donate something suitable. And it would be nice to provide some Christmassy items too,” said Ann. The information-packed website also has a food bank location map for anyone wanting to donate to a food bank in their local area. Food donations can be left in the room next to Facilities on the Warley concourse up to 16 December. “There are people that need your help this Christmas. It costs little but means a lot,” said Ann, who can be contacted on extension 3783 at Warley. New Mondeo debuts air filter system Climate change and pollution contribute to increasing numbers of people suffering from allergies, and sneezing while driving at 60mph may result in “driving blind” for up to 20 metres. Ford is introducing a new air filtration system on the all-new Mondeo that blocks up to 99 per cent of pollen, almost all nitrogen dioxide – a key trigger of asthma – as well as gaseous pollutants and odours. “Fresh air may not be as apparent to drivers as how a car looks, or how it drives, but it is an important part of the quality experience delivered by Ford cars that will be equipped with the filter,” said Ford of Europe technical expert Volker Scheer. “The new filter is 50 per cent more effective than its predecessor at blocking ultra-fine particles that are less than one thousandth of the width of a human hair.” Developed by engineers from Ford’s European research centre in Aachen, Germany, the new filtration system detects carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide levels outside the car and shuts down incoming air. As required, it also automatically switches on the advanced filtration and air recirculation. The all-new Mondeo will offer best-insegment filtration when it debuts the system, alongside further new technologies including Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection. The system also will be available on further Ford vehicles including the all-new S-MAX. £20 crossword Quick across Cryptic across 1. 3. 8. 9. 11. 13. 14. 17. 20. 21. 22. 23. 1. 3. 8. 9. 11. 13. 14. 17. 20. 21. 22. 23.
