A Note from the Christian Youth Director and Preschool Director
Hello Everyone!,
Happy New Year to everyone! I plan to make this New Year an exciting adventure in
evangelizing and bringing children and youth to know Jesus Christ as their Savior and God.
In Preschool our themes for the month are: Occupations, Art, Creative Movement and the
color Blue!
Faith-Village: We will begin a new unit titled, “Man beside the Pool”. The Bible verse is “My
Father is still working, and I also am working.” (John 5:17) The objectives are for the
children to explore the story of Jesus healing the man who was lame at the pool, study what
Sabbath-keeping meant in Jesus’ day and consider where healing comes from today and how
we can be a source of God’s healing for others. God is a source of hope in our lives and
provides healing in unexpected ways.
The Youth are making cinnamon rolls on Jan. 19th! The 7 project kicks off with a youth rally
at 6:00 on Sunday the 5th and the Main rally will be held on Monday the 27th at 6:00. ALL
youth are invited to attend and support this effort!
I would like to update everyone who contributed to the quarters for education. I am using
some of the monies to update the toys and purchase new cabinets in the Nursery. I would
like the toys to be more religious than “regular,” just different from what they have at
home. The cabinets will be up high so little ones cannot get in them. Also, it was used to
purchase some posters and objects for the bulletin board in the fellowship hall. We use this
board for children’s worship on Sunday mornings and I hope all of you get a chance to view
what is on it every Sunday.
Blessings,
Kristin Carrick-Myers

Grief Recovery Ministry
January 2015
I am going to be introspective in this article as events during this time have made me stop and listen
to my heart. We have discussed in this article before about legacies that are left to us by those we have lost,
and also the legacies we will pass on when we are gone. The thing with legacies is they can be good and they
can be bad. I have been pondering which ones I am leaving for not only my children and grandchildren,
but also to those around me.
How have I lived my life? Will things be remembered after I am gone that are good and positive?
For example, when we arrived at HLUMC 28 years ago, we looked for our niche as far as Sunday school
classes. We didn't stop at the first one we visited, instead we went to a class led at that time by a gentleman
much older than we were. Some of you might remember Don Jackman. He was an awesome teacher, and
the marks in my bible will confirm that because he had us underlining, cross referencing, etc. He had
"jewels" he used to say alot, and when you hear them today, you have to think of Don. He told us repeatedly, "Let go and let God". Simple words but so difficult to do sometimes, but Don lived them. Or another
one Marcia mentions sometimes is, "I hear you clucking, but I can't find your nest". Or when you would
ask Don how he was, he would say "I am able to sit up and take nourishment". Don and Ruby and John
and Mable Wyant were best of friends. They were usually not far from each other, and the love of the Lord
they shared with each other, and all the rest of us, was very inspiring. They are not out of sight out of mind,
because the legacies they have left are still in my heart and many other's hearts who knew and loved them.
Life is difficult sometimes. We lose family members, and friends, especially as we get older. How do
we cope with all of these losses, and still maintain a good, positive, attitude? I have great passion for doing
grief work. I love being a small part of people's lives when they are going through grief. I always feel if I
can help in some small way, than I am doing what God has called me to do. I have super-sensitive radar
when I am around people, and I can usually pick up on someone struggling. Then, I can "spring into action", whatever that might entail. God gave me that gift to use.
We have pain and loss in our congregation. We have constant additions to our prayer list, and we
have many who have experienced the loss of a loved one recently. How can we help? Why don't we notice
when someone is missing from church? Why don't we make phone calls or send cards, or give words of encouragement? Sometimes the ones helping need help. We all need to be encouraged, we all need to know
someone cares whether we are here or not. We all need to know that our presence is important, otherwise
we lose people because they think no one cares.
My heart goes out to those that are hurting. I have walked, and sometimes crawled, as I have been
on this journey in my own life on many occasions, but with grief comes growth if we allow it. So, if I can
learn from others examples, and follow their lead, maybe.........just maybe.... I can leave behind a legacy
that is worth remembering. I don't mean I need a star on a sidewalk somewhere, because the truth is, what
is important to me is to have my heavenly Father say to me, "Well done, good and faithful servant" and
that is what we are all striving for.
I want my legacy to be one of a loving, compassionate, caring, God loving , woman. So as I begin this
new year, my goal is to work harder to make that my priority. May the sadness in life, not rule my life. May
God continue to use me for His glory in everything I do and say! May your journey in 2015 be one of good
health, good friends and a new and better relationship with Jesus Christ, as He uses each of us. I am here if
you need me! Happy New Year! May your blessings be many, and your troubles be few. I love you all very
much!
In His Love,
Sue Lazell- Grief Recovery Ministry Coordinator

CROP Walk Update
2014's walk is on the books, and I have to thank all of you for all you do to help with this effort. We
were up on groups participating to 17, and our total as of this date is $17,426.57, our all time record high!!!
Which means over $4300 to our local food pantries! Thank you so much!
In His Love, and mine too,
Sue Lazell, Roscommon County CROP Walk Chairman
MISSIONS UPDATE
Thank you to all the pixies who helped
make our adopt-a-family program successful. This included buying and
wrapping presents, as well as sorting and delivering them in time for Christmas. We were also fortunate to be able to include blankets for all the
families. It was definitely a team effort, and our
church was able to help 14 families this year
through your generosity. In addition, we filled 107
shoeboxes for Samaritan’s Purse.
We will begin our collection to Project Hope
again in January. For the month of January, we
will be collecting laundry detergent and dish soap.
Medium size bottles are the best. Coming up in
February, we will be collecting cereal and peanut
butter.
We will once again have our Valentine/blanket
project coming up in February. Look for updates
as they become available.
Circle of Hope
A big Thank You to our congregation for
your generous acts of kindness.
The Blanket Drive from last year went to
help a family of 6 from Abundant Grace
and to families from our preschool. They were given mostly to the Missions group.
Thank you again for all your support!

Swiss Steak Dinner 2014 Update
From Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC)
I just got the final numbers in on the comparison
from the 2013 and 2014 Swiss Steak Dinner and
wanted to share with you the good news.
In 2013 we took in gross sales of $13,625. In 2014
we took in $15,623. This is an increase of about
$2,000. The $.50 increase in meal price generated
about $1,000 of that increase. The remainder is
due to the volunteers and workers paying for their
dinner.
Our expenses for 2013 were $7,521. For 2014
they were $7,575, for an overall increase of only
$54.00 dollars.
The net return to the general fund for 2013 was
$6,103. For 2014 the amount is 8,047. This was a
net increase of $1,944. Out of these net returns we
contribute 10% to the community caring fund.
It was a great year and I want you to know how
much I appreciate all of the volunteer hours that
make this event possible. THANKS to every one of
you! This event cannot happen without all of us
pulling together. THANK YOU!
We are a very active congregation with a building
constantly in use. Our staff works hard to support all the
many ministries in our facilities. Thank you all in advance for allowing staff to worship on Sundays and to relax
in off hours without facing job related questions. Please
use the index cards in the Administrative Assistant mailbox to express your needs or call and leave a message,
rather than approaching staff in off hours.
Signed comments and questions may also be
placed in the SPRC or Pastor's mailbox. HLUMC

Prayers and Squares
Prayer Quilt Ministry
Prayers & Squares is an interfaith
outreach ministry that combines the gift of prayer
with the gift of a hand-tied quilt or quilt square. P &
S promotes prayer through the use of our quilts &
prayer squares. Both are a gift of love and prayer
from the sewers and the congregation. With a
quilt’s completion, a P & S label and ties are added.
When a request for a quilt is received, one is chosen
and placed on the altar rail. After each worship service the congregation is invited to come forward to
tie a square knot in one (or two) ties and offer a
prayer for the recipient... P & S request forms can
be found on the table next to the church library.
We meet on the Third Thursday of the month at
10am. Our ministry welcomes any and all who enjoy
sewing, quilting or crafting. Bring a beverage and a
munchie! Donations of cotton material are always
welcome and can be placed in the P & S tub above
the coat racks in the west hall. Call Dottie (989-4223563) for details/questions.
How to become a United Methodist Pastor
1. Listen for God’s call: pray, fast, talk to others
about your gifts, personality, talents and abilities. Take a spiritual gifts inventory. Learn
about yourself.
2. Take Lay Servant Ministry training: this is
basic leadership training in the United Methodist Church. Try out some leadership roles in
church and community.
3. Get grounded in the Bible. Join Disciple Bible
Study or get into a small group study.
4. Talk to Pastor Tom: tell him you’re interested
in exploring full-time Christian service.
5. Consider these options:
a) Local Pastor—with a 2 week license to
preach class you can enter into full time
ministry while beginning an ongoing
training program called “The Course of
Study”.
b) Ordained Elder—calls for a Master’s
Degree from an accredited seminary.
GIRL SCOUTS AREA 572 . . . Are looking
for any girls who are entering Kindergarten
on through grade 12 to join. Some troops
already exist to join or new ones can be formed. Meetings are held on the first and third Sundays at the
church from 2 - 4 pm. Any questions, please call Nancy
at 989-202-4046.

Six years ago “Sara’s Bears” started by providing
Bears for one ambulance. Since then we now provide bears for 6 Roscommon County Ambulances,
2 local ER’s, local clinics and local funeral homes.
In these 6 years we have distributed over 5000
bears.
The time has come that I can no longer continue
on alone. In order to continue the “Sara’s Bears”
program, I am in need of someone to take over.
Our “back up” staff of volunteers is great but we
need someone to help with fund raising, distribution, etc. The Ambulance Bears program practically takes care of itself and will continue.
I would like to see this program remain a part of
HLUMC (I’m sure this would be Sara’s desire.)
I’m making one last request that someone may
say “I’m the one and will step forward”. By the
1st of 2015 I will be asking locally, as there has
been interest in some other churches and organizations to keep the program going. I’m sure God
has someone at HLUMC so we can continue with
this special program. If you are the one, please
contact Pastor Tom or me.

Thank You to everyone that helped make Pastor Tom and Karen's surprise party such a success.
Thanks to everyone that helped set up, tear down,

UNITED METHODIST WOMEN
Faith - Hope - Love in Action
United Methodist Women is an integral part of The United Methodist Church. It not
only provides advocacy and service on behalf of
women, children and youth, but also takes a lead
role in expanding concepts of mission for the whole
church. Our growing unit welcomes all women of
our church to become a part of the United Methodist Women’s organization that numbers more than
600,000 world-wide. We gather to fellowship, nurture our faith and engage in mission. You do not
have to be a member of the church to be a member
of the UMW. Join us on Wednesday, January 14th
at 10 am for light refreshments. Pastor Tom Anderson will be our keynote speaker.
*Please keep in mind that during the winter
months, if the public schools are closed due to the
weather, we too will not gather for our UMW
