WHO IS DEMENTIA SA
Dementia SA's primary aim is to provide counselling, support, information, training,
advocacy and research to address the challenges faced by people with dementia their
families and carers. Education, information and networking are vital to all sectors.
This ensures that health care service providers both in formal, informal and
communities, understand dementia, its impact on ageing populations and in
communities. People with dementia may be vulnerable, marginalised and exposed to
various forms of abuse as a result of memory and cognitive impairment.
We look forward to welcoming you to this our 5th Dementia SA Master Classes and
Workshop which will, for the first time, take place in Johannesburg at the Protea Hotel
OR Tambo from 26 to 28 March 2015.
Dementia is one of the biggest challenges to society today with its prevalence increasing
with population ageing. The 2010 worldwide estimate is that there are 36 million people
living with dementia. It is predicted that most new cases will occur in low and middle
income countries (LAMIC). It knows no social, ethnic or geographical boundaries and
every 7 seconds someone in the world is diagnosed with dementia – hence the need
and urgency for the services of our organization, Dementia SA.
Dementia SA’s primary aim is to provide counselling, support, information, training,
advocacy and research to address the challenges faced by people with dementia, their
families and carers.
Education, information and networking are vital to all sectors. This ensures that health
care service providers both in formal, informal and communities, understand dementia,
its impact on ageing populations and in communities. People with dementia are
vulnerable, marginalised and may be exposed to various forms of abuse as a result of
memory and cognitive impairment.
We are a registered NGO (NGO 049-191), PBO (930 022 142), VAT registered 436 025
9073 and BBBEE registered at Level 4. Our training programmes carry registration from
the HPCSA (Health Professionals Council of SA) and the SACSSP (SA Council for
Social Service Practitioners – the Council for Social Workers).
Dementia SA has for the past four years run a very successful conference in Cape
Town. Delegates from all over the country have attended. In the past year, the need
for our services and training has expanded and we have delivered training in the North
West Province, Northern, Southern and Eastern Cape. All our incoming enquiries (calls,
emails, via Health24 etc) are logged and form part of our statistics. The most enquiries
have come from Gauteng and it is with this in mind that we have chosen Gauteng for our
next year “conference”. We have changed the format and focus of the event to more a
Master Class and Workshop format. This is far more in line with better information
dissemination where it is more interactive, case-based learning and outcomes.
