Handshake for Peace
As the first grassroots’ tournament in the world, Norway Cup introduced “Handshake for Peace" in
2012. Kjetil Siem, Secretary General of the Norwegian Football Association had the great idea of a
special handshake to end all football matches.
The idea was further developed in cooperation with the Nobel’s Peace Center to «Handshake for
Peace". It will now be included in all tournaments run by FIFA including the World Championships in
Brazil. Internationally the first “handshake” was taken in the international game between Norway and
England at Ullevaal stadium in 2012.
This is what you do at the matches in Norway Cup:
1. The referee and the team captains meet at the center of the field where the coin toss is at
game start.
2. The captains take a "Handshake for Peace" with each other.
3. The referee takes a “Handshake for Peace" with both captains.
Handshake for Peace is performed from13 years of age and up.
Handshake for Peace symbolizes the values that the football stands for: respect, friendship and joy.

Referees and Observers
There are approximately 400 referees and 70 observers in this year’s Norway Cup. The referees judge
on all levels from NFF referees to new recruitment and club referees. There are approximately 90
foreign referees representing several countries inside and outside Europe. The referees are lodged at
Brannfjell school, situated at the end of the Ekeberg fields, where also the Referee Secretariat is.During
the tournament, the referees are observed and guided by the Observers. This is to help the referees
become better and learn from their mistakes. The Observers write a report after the game that is
submitted to the Referee Secretariat. These reports make the foundation for the Referee Secretariat
when picking referees for the play-off games including finals. The Observers shall also report any bad
behavior on or off the fields.
In classes A, B, and Q we use one referee and two assistant referees, if we have the capacity. In all
other classes there is one referee. In the play-offs assistant referees will be placed in all 11 a-side
classes. All A-finals have 4 referees.
If you are interested in becoming a Norway Cup referee, please go to norwaycup.no and press the
British flag for pages in English. There you will find information and entry form in English.
