Central Okanagan Solid Waste
Management Plan Review
Do you ever think about where your garbage and recycling goes when
you set it at the curb? Do you wish you could get involved in shaping how
waste is managed in the Central Okanagan for years to come? Now’s your
chance!
The Regional District of Central Okanagan is updating its Solid Waste
Management Plan in 2015 to lay the groundwork for managing and reducing
our garbage over the next 20 years. Topics for future planning include
recycling, composting, waste collection and disposal for residents and
businesses throughout the Central Okanagan.
To assist with this plan review and goal setting, the Regional Waste
Reduction Office will be seeking input from individuals who represent
various business, community and neighbourhood organizations. Citizens
can get involved in many ways, including as a member of the Public
Advisory Committee (PAC). The PAC will provide input, feedback and
recommendations on proposed programs and policies that will shape the
future of how we manage and reduce waste in the Central Okanagan.
If you would like to get involved with our Solid Waste Management
Plan Review in 2015, please contact us at 250-469-6250 or email
at [email protected].

Five Ways to End
Food Waste
The average Canadian throws
away 24% of the food they bring
home.
When people toss food, all the resources
to grow, ship, process, package and
ship it get wasted, too. Most food waste
won’t happen if we take the time to
plan better and learn better food storage
skills.
1. Check your cupboards before
shopping; make a list of what you
need.
2. Plan your meals and buy only what
you need.
3. Learn the best way to store food;
search the internet for food storage
tips.
4. Freeze food for another time.
5. Use up most perishable foods first.
6. Invest in a backyard composter or
build your own to make good use
of leftover kitchen scraps.

How to Reduce Plastic
Waste
1. Always use reusable shopping bags.
2. Skip bottled water. Carry your own
refillable bottle and fill up at the tap.
3. Avoid products that use plastic
packaging that isn’t accepted in the
RDCO’s recycling program.
4. Use reusable containers rather than
cling-wrap or zipper bags for lunch or
left overs. Cling wrap and zipper bags
are not recyclable at this time.
5. Use reusable mesh bags for fresh
produce rather than plastic produce
bags.
6. Avoid disposable plastic items such
as cutlery and small plastic toys.
Tip:
Take plastic
bags to a
recycling depot;
do not place in
your curbside
cart.

Backyard Composting:
Easy, fun and useful!
Backyard composting is an easy and
inexpensive way to turn kitchen and garden
waste into a great soil enhancer!
Purchase your composter today
The Regional Waste Reduction Office hosts
an annual composter sale each spring,
just in time for gardening season. Visit
regionaldistrict.com/compostersale.
Tips:
• Layer green materials (veggie scraps)
with browns (dry leaves/newspapers).
• Stir frequently to aerate; add water as
needed (to a consistency of a wrung-out
sponge).
• Chop materials into smaller pieces for
faster decomposition.
• Compost is ready when the texture is
dark and crumbly, with an earthy smell.
(3-18 months, depending on how well you
tend the pile!)

Bee Natural
Lawns and gardens love to be
naturally beautiful and healthy.
Did you know?
Many pesticides, insecticides and weedand-feed type products are harmful
to people, pets, wildlife and beneficial
insects (including bees and ladybugs).
Tips for a healthy, natural yard:
• Mow high (7 cm/3 in)
• Leave grass clippings on the lawn
• Water only when necessary
• De-thatch, aerate and add OgoGrow or
GlenGrow compost
• Use nematodes, organic pest soaps
and other natural remedies (like
vinegar water)
Visit kelowna.ca/environment for
more pesticide-free yard tips.
Kelowna’s Pesticide Bylaw
regulates the use of pesticides
for cosmetic purposes
within the City of Kelowna.

Five Green Actions
that Reduce Waste
• Kick the bottle: switch from bottled
water to tap water.
• Grow local, shop local. Growing
your own food or buying from the
farmers market reduces the need
for prepackaged foods and extra
packaging.
• Pack a litter-less lunch. Eating out or
take out creates waste. Pack lunches
in reusable containers.
• Buy less or buy used. Decide if you
really need it. If so, try finding ‘used’
instead of buying brand new.
• Use cloth bags when shopping.
Use it up,
wear it out,
make it do,
or do without!

Don’t Toss it,
Repair it!
Four great reasons to consider
repairing something before
tossing and buying new.
REPAIR IS BETTER THAN
RECYCLING
Making our things last longer is more
efficient and cost-effective than mining
for new materials.
REPAIR SAVES YOU MONEY
Fixing things is often free, and usually
cheaper than replacing them.
REPAIR SAVES THE PLANET
Earth has limited resources. The best
way to be efficient is to reuse what we
already have.
REPAIR TEACHES ENGINEERING
The best way to find out how
something works is to take it apart.
For more info on the next Repair Café
in your area, or on Repair and Reuse
in general, visit

Make Holiday
Memories,
NOT garbage
This holiday season, choose experiences
instead of things, making time for
special activities with those you care
about and creating shared memories.
Here are just a few ideas:
• Concert or theatre tickets
• Art, cooking, photography classes
from a local community centre
• Ski or snowboard passes
• Night Out / Dinner and a Movie
• Massage or spa treatment
• Offer to teach someone a new skill:
knitting, cooking, woodworking
Gifts of experiences let you choose
something meaningful, while also
cutting back on waste that ultimately
clutters our landfill.
