2015 Living Greener Calendar www.regionaldistrict.com/recycle • Recycling, Garbage & Yard Waste Collection Coming in 2015 Central Okanagan Solid Waste Management Plan Review Do you ever think about where your garbage and recycling goes when you set it at the curb? Do you wish you could get involved in shaping how waste is managed in the Central Okanagan for years to come? Now’s your chance! The Regional District of Central Okanagan is updating its Solid Waste Management Plan in 2015 to lay the groundwork for managing and reducing our garbage over the next 20 years. Topics for future planning include recycling, composting, waste collection and disposal for residents and businesses throughout the Central Okanagan. To assist with this plan review and goal setting, the Regional Waste Reduction Office will be seeking input from individuals who represent various business, community and neighbourhood organizations. Citizens can get involved in many ways, including as a member of the Public Advisory Committee (PAC). The PAC will provide input, feedback and recommendations on proposed programs and policies that will shape the future of how we manage and reduce waste in the Central Okanagan. If you would like to get involved with our Solid Waste Management Plan Review in 2015, please contact us at 250-469-6250 or email at [email protected]. When people toss food, all the resources to grow, ship, process, package and ship it get wasted, too. Most food waste won’t happen if we take the time to plan better and learn better food storage skills. 1. Check your cupboards before shopping; make a list of what you need. 2. Plan your meals and buy only what you need. 3. Learn the best way to store food; search the internet for food storage tips. 4. Freeze food for another time. 5. Use up most perishable foods first. 6. Invest in a backyard composter or build your own to make good use of leftover kitchen scraps. 9 To find out if you are in an A or B collection week, see maps on pages 7-8. Growing your own food or buying from the farmers market reduces the need for prepackaged foods and extra packaging. • Pack a litter-less lunch. Eating out or take out creates waste. Pack lunches in reusable containers. • Buy less or buy used. Decide if you really need it. If so, try finding ‘used’ instead of buying brand new. • Use cloth bags when shopping.
