Mir Sarfraz Bugti said that his province has been facing severe drought because there has been little rainfall and snowfall this winter season. Most of the deputy commissioners have produced reports to inform the PDMA about the drought situation in their respective districts. Another senior official of the PDMA said that the National Weather Forecasting Centre of the Pakistan Meteorological Department has also endorsed these reports. Bugti said that his department has already started preparations to handle the situation, though he refused to share details of the preparations. “We have informed chief minister [Dr Abdul Malik Baloch] about the possible repercussions of the drought. The PDMA has also issued emergency warnings to all provincial departments, including agriculture, irrigation and food, regarding arrangements to tackle the situation,” he added. An official of the provincial agriculture department, who has received said warning, told local media that the drought has severely affected the rain fed districts of Balochistan. More than 80 percent of the districts are rain fed in the province. Agriculture being the backbone of the provincial economy provides employment to over 60 per cent of its population. Scores of representatives from different Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), government officials of relevant departments across the country participated. The Conference convened not only to chalk out a comprehensive & collective action plan in order to mitigate the malnutrition crises but also to devise a roadmap which would lead to scaling up nutrition on sustainable basis in Pakistan. A sub-division of hilly District of Battagram,KP province; Allai is inhabited by a population of 150000 people approx. & is constituted of 8 Union Councils but still was devoid of any high school for Girls. Save the Children took the initiative and constructed the ever first Girls high School in Allai and that too in an unprecedented manner. Constructed on the scenic point at Rabat with a financial cost of 20 million PKR, the High School for Girls consists of 5 spacious class rooms, 1 examination hall, 1 laboratory, a store and many lavatories. Save the Children pledges to ensure the right of education to the Children of Pakistan especially to those who are living in the hinterlands where educational opportunities are at the lowest ebb. In the wake of 25th anniversary of UNCRC, Save the Children conducted a series of awareness campaigns focusing different Government Schools situated specially in the hinterlands of Pakistan. The idea was to make the children vocal for their own rights. Such was the interactive session conducted in one of the government schools of District Battagram, KP Province.
