Center and Still by Meg Franklin
Alice Hirt and Jo Bearse Endowed Art Exhibition
Meg Franklin is a Brooklyn, N.Y.-based artist who was born and raised in Young
Harris. Her paintings focus on the raw physicality of objects and explore the
haziness of identity in the face of the human need to establish it. Her still lifes
are comprised of objects that fall just short of identifiable, creating a sense
of recognition while remaining too elusive to name or assign with a function.
Franklin earned her B.A. in English and creative writing from Washington and Lee
University, her M.F.A. in creative writing from the University of Florida, and her
M.F.A. in painting from the New York Academy of Art.

The Hate Project by Steve Cole
Just what does “hate” mean? How does it spread? How can intolerance be
stopped? Those questions and more are raised by this installation that depicts
the growing prevalence of intolerance and hate nationwide by graphically
illustrating the 939 “hate groups” currently active in the United States as
identified by the Southern Poverty Law Center. A professor of art at BirminghamSouthern College, Cole earned his B.S. and M.A. from Ball State University and
his M.F.A. from Florida State University.

Show and Tell by Butch Anthony
Butch Anthony is an artist not easily defined. He collects bizarre objects and
transforms them into strangely beautiful art for one of America’s favorite roadside
attractions, his “Museum of Wonder” in Seale, Ala. His hand-built home was
featured in the New York Times and is built from stones and the timber of an old
cotton mill, elegantly decorated with Anthony’s own artwork. Anthony’s artistic spirit
sees him apply his talents to a number of different modes and mediums, and he
calls his specific genre of work “intertwangelism”—an -ism of his own creation.

Where You Are
The Mikado
YHC collaborates with La Salle
University on this innovative
digital art exhibition that will take
place simultaneously in urban
Philadelphia, Pa., and rural Young
Harris. The artwork presented by
students from both institutions
will compare and contrast the two
geographic regions through a mix
of digital prints, video, and audio.
Music by Arthur Sullivan
Lyrics by W. S. Gilbert
One of the most popular of the
long line of “Savoy Operas,” this
witty tale of tangled law and love
is a satire of Victorian England
set in Japan. Nanki-Poo, the son
of the Mikado, flees his home to
avoid an arranged marriage to an
older woman only to find himself
falling in love with the beautiful
Yum-Yum, who is also betrothed—
to her guardian, Ko-Ko, the Lord
High Executioner. Will Nanki-Poo
find love or face the wrath of the
Mikado for defying his order? Find
out in this romp that weaves two
cultures seamlessly together with
humorous lyrics and elaborate
plot twists.
