MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR
Designing and manufacturing gears requires a unique knowledge base and skillset. As it
is with all areas of specialization, it has its own language and lore. Still, gear production should
not, and cannot, exist within a vacuum. As an important piece in the global manufacturing puzzle,
gear manufacturers require the same constant stream of new ideas, processes and technologies
as any other successful businessperson. That, in fact, describes the impetus behind Gardner
Business Media’s decision to launch Gear Production as a supplement to Modern Machine Shop
magazine in 2013. An annual publication then, it will be produced quarterly beginning this year.
The reason for this development has to do with the response we’ve received, both from
supporters as well as the subjects of the articles we’ve produced so far. In short, we’ve taken the
Modern Machine Shop model of working directly with business owners, end users and operators
in order to explore successful experiences they’ve had and approaches they’ve developed
harnessing the power of a particular process, technology, service or piece of equipment.
By sharing these successes with our audience we’re both celebrating the achievement and
encouraging readers to take the same entrepreneurial approach to their own operations.
Every manufacturing company has its own configuration—its own DNA, if you will—that has been

shaped by events, decisions, resources, markets served, global economics and the technologies
that are available. This makes every gear manufacturer a singular case study in how it has gone
about setting, and reaching, its goals. By visiting these shops to learn about their achievements
firsthand, we are then able to share that lesson in the pages of Gear Production to the benefit
of the gear manufacturing industry at large. This is a responsibility that we take seriously, and
thoroughly enjoy meeting.
Please join us in this exploration of the industry’s best practices by reaching
out to me whenever you have an idea for an article that you’d care to
share. We are interested in your work, and—like your colleagues in the gear
manufacturing industry—we’re here to learn from your example.
