Baldwin recalls
how Vietnam
was a different
kind of war
A Reluctant Hero
LAUREN ZECHIN
[email protected]
W
hen 19-year-old
Bill Baldwin got
a letter from the
government in
1968, he knew what to do.
“We stuck it back in the
mailbox and we moved. I
thought, ‘I’ll check this out
later,’” Baldwin said.
The Keokuk native was
married, living in Davenport
and working for
Aamco Transmissions.
“The draft – it
was traumatic
for you,” Baldwin
said. “Your life
is fairly well on
Baldwin
a path, and then
all of a sudden you get jerked
out of it.
“My wife was pregnant
with our first baby, and everybody says, ‘Well, if you’re
married and you got a family,
they won’t draft you.’ It didn’t
stop them. She got so upset,
she lost the baby.”
The second letter came
hand-carried – by an FBI
agent. Failure to report
meant time in Leavenworth.
Baldwin didn’t want to be
called because he didn’t want
to die.
“We were replacements.
There was 50,000 killed and
they needed somebody to take
their place,” he said.
ASSIGNED TO GERMANY
He may have joined up
reluctantly, but once he’d
completed his Army training, Baldwin knew what he
needed to do and was prepared to do it. To this day,
he can’t understand why he
wasn’t sent to Vietnam.
“We were trained for jungle
training, but me and one
other man out of 500 did not
go to Vietnam,” Baldwin said.
COURTESY / AMY MORGAN
Bill Baldwin of Warsaw, Ill., excelled in marksmanship during military training at Fort Riley, Kan., during the Vietnam
War era.
COURTESY / BILL BALDWIN
In 1968, Bill Baldwin received a life-changing letter. He had
been drafted into the Army during the Vietnam War. He still
has the letter.
“They had us all in a big area
and all of us were for infantry. I trained in artillery.
“The day they assigned
where everybody was going,
everybody sweating bullets,
they had pulled me and one
other fella out of line and said
we were going to the Czech
border in Germany.”
Baldwin suspects his
response to a pre-assignment
interview was the only reason he was singled out.
“They ask you – like you
got a choice – ‘Where do you
want to go overseas?’ And I
said, ‘I want to go to Vietnam.
You brought me in here for
this. You put me through 16
weeks of hell. I’m ready, but
I’m not dying over there.
I’m taking enough firepower
that I’m killing anything that
moves.’
“I have to believe that’s the
only reason they didn’t send
us. I volunteered to go and
they said, ‘No. We don’t need
another maniac over there.’
“I’m quite content to go to
my grave never having killed
anybody.”
LIFE IN BAVARIA
But the non-combat zone
wasn’t without its challenges.
Baldwin was stationed in
Grafenwoehr, Bavaria, for
seven months – two and a
half months on an ICBM portable missile.
“Forty below zero, three
to four feet of snow – it was
cold,” Baldwin said.
There was a lot of animosity toward the American
troops. Signs of World War II
were still everywhere.
“I saw Dachau, the prison
where they burnt the Jews
– gruesome place,” he said.
“We saw a lot of buildings
where machine gun fire went
right up a wall. Towns were
literally blown off the map.
There were signs, ‘Fraternizing with female population
is a hanging offense.’ The
American military had no
jurisdiction.”
And to top it off, they had
a superior officer who agreed
to hide their alcohol and
cigarettes prior to an inspection, but never returned the
contraband. They also had a
commanding officer who had
a tent with a wooden floor
and kept his heater fuel in a
tree so it didn’t freeze. The
C.O. never did find out who
switched off his heater fuel
supply one frigid night, and
Baldwin’s not telling.
DIFFERENT KIND OF WAR
Baldwin kept up with news
from the combat zone.
“We got news, letters from
them. Guys that we trained
with that were over there
were coming back in bags,”
he said. “The odds were 10
to one. There was 500 of (the
enemy) and 50 of you. Plus,
they had 100 years to build
underground tunnels. They
could shoot you over here, get
underground, run five miles
and get behind you. There
was no front lines. You were
in a jungle and they were all
around you.”
Vietnam was completely

different from all other wars,
according to Baldwin. He
remembers “hippies” waiting
by the airport to spit at the
soldiers and call them derogatory names.
“They say that’s the war we
lost – we never lost nothing,”
he said. “They pulled us out.
(The Viet Cong) lost over 3
million soldiers. They became
not a power anymore. And
yet we lost the war? We lost
58,000.”
TRAINING
Military training methods
were far different in those
days, too.
“Their training was for
one purpose and one purpose
only,” Baldwin said. “Every
single day you woke up, and
the first thing out of your
mouth is ‘I’m a killer.’ You
had a chant you had to do. ...
Well, now they don’t allow
that. Back then they had no
qualms about beating your
brains out, either.”
From day one, it was clear
to Baldwin that the instructors would keep the trainees
on their toes. They’d use
mind games to humble an

BALDWIN: Basic training at Fort Still in Oklahoma prepared him for Vietnam climate

individual or teach him to
submit to orders without
question. Some of them were
just mean spirited, he said.
Baldwin suspects the tough
training he and the others
endured was intended to prepare them for the treacherous
tactics of their enemy, who
would “do anything to kill”
them. But occasionally, boot
camp resembled real combat
a little too much.
“We had three guys killed
in boot camp ... panicked ...
took off ... they got cut right
in two with (live) machine
gun fire,” Baldwin said.
“They were scared. It was
dark. You couldn’t see nothing. They took off the wrong
way. It was tough.”
After boot camp in Fort
Riley, Kan., he received basic
training at Fort Sill, Okla.
The Oklahoma humidity as
well as a man-made swamp
simulated the conditions in
‘Nam. The stagnant black water had giant leeches swimming in it as well as snakes.
“You had to go through that
with a rifle over your head in
full field gear. It was always
at night. You had to walk two
miles in it,” Baldwin said. “I
come out of there and I bet I
had 200 leeches on me. And
you can’t pull them off. You
got to rub salt on them and
they fall off.
“I bet we did that 10 times. I
hated it.”
There were occasional light
moments, however.
One day, Baldwin found a
giant spider bigger than his
helmet. He stabbed the spider
with his bayonet, and sold it
to a bug collector for $5.
Baldwin was sent to Fort
Bliss, Texas, for advanced
infantry training.
“It was so hot in that desert
and we wore wool,” he said.
“They’d take you out in the
desert 100 miles from nowhere, full of sand dunes,
daytime 125 degrees. You
might wake up weighing 165
pounds and by the time you
got back from one day’s training you’d dropped 20. You’d
literally sweat it out.”
At times, the men would
come upon venomous snakes
hiding in the sand.
“We were crawling along
them sand dunes with a rifle
across our arms,” Baldwin
said. “I popped up over one
right on top of a rattlesnake.
He rared back. I had an M-14
and there was a 20-round clip
of blanks in it. I was close
enough when I pulled the
trigger on it, it popped those
20 rounds off and killed that
snake.
“And they actually put me
on four days KP because I
shot that weapon,” he added.
“At least I got to eat good
those four days.”
Having grown up hunting
squirrels and rabbits around
Keokuk, Baldwin was expert
or better at firing any kind of
weapon.

Military service runs in his
family. Many extended family
members have served or are
serving. Baldwin’s greatgrandfather fought in the
Civil War, his grandfather in
World War I, and his father
in World War II.
He was only 5 when his
father came back home.
“Dad didn’t talk about the
war too much. He was in
pretty hot,” Baldwin said.
“He actually served in all
four branches of the military
– took a two- to three-year
stretch in all of them.”
Even after what he’s been
through, Baldwin believes
that “every young man
should go in the military for
a stretch – at least two years.
It’s a character-builder. It
teaches you that life ain’t
free.”
He wanted his son, William
Jr., to serve for a short time.
“I wanted him to go for two
for property damage caused
by ‘flower children’ who
attended the August 1969
Woodstock Festival. More
than 450,000 people attended
the three-day event.
Jan. 8, 1958 - Bobby Fischer
won the United States Chess
Championship for the first
time. Interesting note: Fischer was all of 14 years of age.
Jan. 8, 1987 - The Dow Jones
Industrial Average closed
over the 2000 mark for the
first time ever.
Jan. 9, 1942 - Joe Louis
knocked out Buddy Baer.
‘The Brown Bomber’ defended his world heavyweight
boxing title for the 20th time
as Buddy rested comfortably
on the canvas in the very first
round.
Jan. 9, 1984 - “WHERE’S
THE BEEF?” Clara Peller was
first seen by TV viewers this
day in the famous and successful commercial campaign
for Wendy’s fast-food chain.
Jan. 9, 2001 - Astronomers
reported the discovery of a
gigantic object more than 17
times the size of Jupiter in
the constellation Serpens, 123
light-years from Earth.
Jan. 10, 1949 - The Radio
Corporation of America,
sometimes known as RCA,
week in Davenport, Baldwin’s
military pay started at $54 a
month. Baldwin’s wife Dixie
had to move in with his parents because they could no
longer afford their apartment.
After six months, Baldwin’s
pay was increased to $78.
By the time he got out of the
service in early 1970, Baldwin
was getting $410 per month.
“You weren’t in there to
get paid,” he said. “It wasn’t
a job. You were in there to
serve your country, do a
deal.”
At that time all servicemen
were paid in new cash. He
recalls one payday, an agonizing three hours standing
guard while the C.O. sorted
and distributed $400,000 –
more money than Baldwin
had ever seen.
FAMILY TRADITION
years; I didn’t expect him to
stay 12,” he said. “It was like
I didn’t have him. He was in
school; he was out; he was
gone. Twelve years later, we
got him back.”
His son served two tours on
the Korean border and two
tours in Iraq.
BACK HOME
Baldwin Sr. made it to E-5
sergeant by the time his tenure was up. They offered him
$7,000 cash, a 30-day leave and
a pay-grade raise to reenlist
for four more years. His reply
was “I’ve had all of you I can
handle.”
Baldwin returned to Davenport, where he and Dixie
lived for five years before
they returned to the Tri-State
Area to raise their kids. The
couple also has three daughters, Diana (James) Steffen,
Connie Baldwin and Amy
(Jerry) Morgan.
He owned and operated a
transmission shop in Keokuk
before his retirement. A resident of Warsaw, Ill., for many
years, he enjoys fishing with
his bass club.
He is a three-year throat
cancer survivor, and after an
unexplainable turnaround
from a traumatic bout with
heart disease, he considers
every day a blessing.
“I’ve had three shots at
dying and I’m still here,”
Baldwin said. “So evidently,
I ought to hang around for
something.”
THIS WEEK IN HISTORY
Jan. 6, 1952 - A regular feature of Sunday funny papers
debuted. “Peanuts” was seen
above the fold in newspapers
across the U.S. The Charles
Schulz creation became the
most successful syndicated
comic strip in history.
Jan 6, 1994 - Nancy Kerrigan, a favorite to win the
women’s U.S. Figure Skating
Championship, was assaulted
after she finished a practice
session in Detroit. The assailant used a blunt object to
strike the skater on the right

Income generated from additional fuel tax is needed to improve city, county and state roads and bridges. In addition - we need
to support our Farmer Friends with 15% Ethanol approved and tanks available to handle 15% Ethanol if necessary. We use only
gasoline with 10% Ethanol in all our 80 to 100 used units. These units I am sure will handle 15% Ethanol with no complications.
Many will perform well using 30% to 85% Ethanol.
