Miami - Nassau Race 2014 on MIRAGE
Submitted by Christian Schaumloffel
It's always a new challenge whether we can pull it off in 8 days from Hampton via
Miami to Nassau and back. Usually the rock stars in sailing jump on a beautiful big
yacht after they familiarized themselves with boat, crew and race course. Well, I
have the feeling the whole MIRAGE crew fit the above definition by default. And
yes, we finished in the middle of all these beautiful big yachts after a slow light wind
30 hour race. 2 years ago it was the record breaker and 22 hours for us. This race
was a challenge right from the start. We were 7 minutes late and I was rather
unhappy with my lack of foresight into opposing wind and current.

Happy New Year!!!
A New Year is upon us. As your new Commodore, I would like to start off the year by thanking all of our members,
volunteers, staff and management for another great year at HYC! Without all of you, HYC would not be the great
club that it is.
For 2015, I look forward to the new challenges that await us and know from past experiences that we have the people
in place to make the best of these opportunities. I would like to take this time to pledge that the board and I are committed to maintaining fiscal responsibility while bringing the same level of success to the club’s traditions and activities
both on and off the water that we have enjoyed in the past.
I would also like to report that once again our Holiday membership drive was a success bringing aboard a number of
new members! I know we all look forward to meeting the wonderful new members who have chosen HYC as their
Yacht Club! Please be sure to say “Hello” and make them all feel welcome.
I look forward to the New Year and serving HYC as the commodore!

“Broadening the Scope of Junior Sailing”
February 9th, 2015 at 7:30 pm
Featuring NEVIN SAYRE
Before Nevin Sayre was a five-time U.S. National Windsurfing Champion, he was a four-time college sailing AllAmerican. Sayre not only understands the competitive side of sailing, he understands that competition isn’t necessarily what sailing is all about. So why is the U.S. struggling to turn youth sailors into life sailors?

HOW A “LIVING SHORELINE” CAN HELP PROTECT YOUR WATERFRONT PROPERTY
January 12, 2015
HYC Membership Meeting at 7:30pm
Are you a shoreline property owner?
Do you have an erosion problem?
Is a “living shoreline” project suitable for your property?
Do you need permits for a living shoreline project?
What if your property is currently defended by a revetment or bulkhead?
How do you plant tidal marsh grasses along your shoreline?
Where can you get more information on living shorelines?
Christine Tombleson, Coastal Advisory Scientist with the Center for Coastal
Resources Management (CCRM) at VIMS, will share a presentation on what
are known as “living shorelines.” Many local shorelines are stabilized with
Hermitage Living Shoreline Initial Planting
hardened structures, such as bulkheads, revetment, and concrete seawalls.
Ironically, these structures often increase the rate of coastal erosion, remove
the ability of the shoreline to carry out natural processes, and provide little
habitat for estuarine species.
Christine will discuss a more natural bank stabilization technique called living
shorelines, an approach that uses plants, sand, and some rock to provide
shoreline protection and maintain valuable habitat. Living shoreline projects
use a variety of structural and organic materials, such as wetland plants, submerged aquatic vegetation, oyster reefs, coir fiber logs, sand fill, and stone.
Benefits of living shorelines may include: reducing bank erosion and property loss; providing an attractive natural appearance; creating recreational use
areas; improving marine habitat & spawning areas; more affordable construction costs; and improving water quality and clarity.
Hermitage Living Shoreline after Growing
Ms. Tombleson serves as the primary contact for provision of technical advice to local governments, state agencies and the general public with regard Season
to tidal shorelines and coastal zone management, and conducts field work for
marsh inventories and research projects. She has served as Environmental Programs Administrator and Wetlands Board staff
for local government, and had a private marine permit consulting business. She holds a B.S. in Biology and an M.S. in Environmental Science.

(Continued from page 1)
The wind was against the Gulf Stream but not too forceful. The calm starry night was beautiful with a prominent meteor sighting. At least we had the spinnaker up the last half of 176 nm race and liked the view at dawn. Not only could we see the Caribbean blue water but competitors in a size range we didn't expect. The last leg towards Nassau was a mix of reach and run and
on MIRAGE we kept it close to the optimal wind angles and often changed course to keep us moving. The leading boats encountered lighter wind ahead and jibed dozens (plural) of times to keep moving. Nassau finish line here we come with several J120 around us and other big rigs. Finishing right after a gorgeous sunset we headed for our dock, hotel, shower and Nassau YC.
There Bahama Mamas and a fantastic all you can eat buffet was practically waiting for us there.
The next day's awards party had something new in store. It wasn't the Junkanoos but the same brass band and Caribbean drums
without the costumes around the swimming pool. Everybody got into the rhythm and we knew this was the best place to be in
Nassau. MIRAGE won the Nassau Cup last year since the only class then was PHRF. This year the bigger boats sailed for the
Nassau Cup under the IRC rating. We were happy with our 2nd place in PHRF but even happier that we beat the first place
boat in IRC.
From previous years’ experience I knew that we didn't need to be an early riser for the return trip. We arrived at our favorite
beach after 17 hours in the dead of the night and anchored in some lumpy seas. At dawn we moved around into a sheltered
bight in accordance to good seamanship. I wouldn't have dared to do the same in pitch black with unknown reefs. Fun at the
beach and corals was followed by feeding stingrays in ankle deep water. Stingrays in the wild aren't a petting zoo but they were
very friendly. Even big daddy in the size of a 5 foot dining room table was nice but a little unnerving by its sheer size.
The weather forecast projected 20 knots wind from the NE which would have turned the Florida Straits into steep waves with
the Gulf Stream opposing it. We liked to miss this challenge and left a little earlier to arrive in Biscayne Bay by midnight. The
nightly warm shower at Coral Reef YC was heavenly and we slept great the rest of the night. A very pretty picture MIRAGE
received as 2nd place survived the sail back in mint condition and serves as a reminder of a successful round trip back in
Hampton Roads.
