On behalf of the Board of Directors we wish you and your families
a joyous holiday season.
To say the least, it has been a whirlwind year with the stadium
project consuming virtually all of our time. We have experienced
several delays in our efforts to complete this fantastic project, but
I’m glad to report that we’re about 99% complete.
Some improvements that we are still working on include the donor brick area,
installation of the sound system, spraying of concrete on the south end slope,
construction of a deck at the end of the concourse, as well as improving the
area between LHS and Lahaina Intermediate for additional parking.
The recent addition of Lanny Tihada as the Athletic Chair, was an incredible
boost to our efforts. He was able to get things done quickly and acquire more
“in kind” consideration that we could have ever imagined. Many thanks, Lanny.
Rob Shelton was able to jump back into the fray and his input was needed as
another objective perspective in the decision making process regarding all the
issues at hand.
Jeff Rogers became the unofficial project coordinator, serving as the liaison
between the architect — Dennis Harmon, and the builder — Hawaiian Dredging,
fielding countless change orders and questions.
I wish you all could have seen our benefactor, Sue Cooley, when she came up
to the stadium recently and saw her name on the front of the building! She was
also able to witness students from the boarding program, along with the football
and basketball teams hard at work landscaping and cleaning the stadium areas.

LAHAINALUNA HIGH SCHOOL FOUNDATION
LEGACY GIVING
Last November, Kenneth Nohealani Sharpe, of Lahaina, passed away at Maui Memorial Medical Center. A few months later, the
Lahainaluna High School Foundation was advised by his financial representative that Kenneth had bequeathed his investment
account to the LHS Foundation. It was very unexpected and humbling that he had committed to gifting his funds through our
organization to benefit Lahainaluna High School.
In February of this year, one of our founders, Charles Fox III, passed away in Honolulu. Besides all that he did philanthropically for
the Foundation during his life, his family conveyed that Charlie’s wishes included donations in his memory to the LHS Foundation.
Just recently, Lahainaluna High School class of 1955 graduate and former boarding student Arthur Nikaido, passed away, and
again the LHS Foundation was also identified as a recipient of any donations. We are humbled and most appreciative of these remembrances.
Bequests and other planned gifts can have a huge impact on charitable organizations like the LHS Foundation, and they don’t take
much time or money to arrange. One doesn’t have to be wealthy to make a significant contribution to make a real difference for
Lahainaluna.
Anyone who names Lahainaluna High School Foundation in a will, trust, or insurance arrangement
may become a member of the Lahainaluna High School Foundation Legacy Program. One of the
easiest ways to make a meaningful gift to Lahainaluna High School is through a planned gift arrangement. A bequest can be made through a will in the form of a gift of a specified dollar amount, a
piece of real property, a block of stock, or a percentage of the entire estate. A simple change to an already existing will (a codicil)
is another way to arrange this gifting process.
Through planned giving, donors and their families receive the satisfaction of leaving their legacy where they feel it matters the
most. If you are considering making such a bequest, set up an appointment with your financial advisor, attorney, or contact the
Foundation directly. The LHS Foundation thanks you for your support.
Bleacher Campaign
The LHS Stadium bleacher campaign began in March of this year and will continue until further notice. To date, over
$45,000 has been raised to help fund the cost of the bleachers, an expense of over $100,000!! Nineteen classes, and
the current LHS staff, reached their goal of donating $1,000 or more and their gifts will be recognized with nameplates at both ends of their sponsored row of bleachers. Ten other bleachers have been sponsored by individuals,
families and businesses. We thank everyone who has participated in this campaign and we look forward to the other
classes (see website for a running list) who continue to work on reaching a full sponsorship in order to be officially be recognized
with their nameplate. Donations can still be made by check, or also through the website. Mahalo … I MUA Lahainaluna!

Hyundai Tournament of Champions
Hyundai is again the title sponsor for the Tournament of
Champions, PGA golf tournament. This is a winners only
event, scheduled for January 8-12, 2015, at The Plantation
Course, Kapalua Resort.
The 2014 Tournament was successful for players, fans, and the non-profit beneficiaries of the tournament. Funds are distributed
to various clubs, teams, and programs at Lahainaluna who assist with making the Tournament a success. Mark your calendars and
help make this next tournament another success for our community!

The Grants Committee meets periodically to review the grant requests submitted to the LHS Foundation. Requestors
are always welcome to be present to answer any questions about their specific grant needs. We review and prioritize
each one and submit our recommendations to the LHS Foundation Board of Directors. We are very proud to announce
that over $1,000,000 in grants have been awarded since 2002!!
Donors: your contributions towards programs and projects can be awarded through our Grants Committee, by your specifying
such when you make your donations. Along with the hundreds of individual donors, we recognize the Hyundai Tournament of
Champions and the Makana Aloha Foundation for their generosity. MAHALO TO ALL for the fulfilling service to our school.
Lahainaluna Boarders Association
Each school year the Boarding Department faces new challenges. Last year was no different when the dormitory counselors
(teacher positions) were converted to dormitory attendant positions. The 6 authorized positions were not enough to fulfill the
needs of the Boarding Program which found itself one position, one shift short in each of the dormitories. As a result each boarding student was required to check out every Sunday at 8:00 am and remain off campus until 4:30 pm that evening. Sundays were
often spent sleeping in as boarders report to work every other day of the week at 6:00 am. The day is also spent catching up on
homework, doing laundry, working off hours or just relaxing with their boarder ‘ohana. This caused quite a strain on the boarding
students, parents and sponsors as many families had to travel from as far away as Hana or Upcountry to pick up the students for
the day. Many of these parents also sponsor students from neighboring islands. None of the parents or sponsors expected that
they would be doing this and many contemplated having the student leave the boarding program.
The Lahainaluna Boarders Association (LBA), in working with the DOE, School Administration and Staff was able to
reach an agreement that allowed the existing dormitory attendants to work the additional shift on overtime
through funding provided by the LBA for the second semester. With the help of our legislators, our membership,
parents and community members, the necessary monies were appropriated this year.
A “Working Group” was been established to look at ways to sustain the Boarding Program. The group consists of members from
the administration, complex area superintendent, a community member, legislator, school community council member, current
boarder, a Lahainaluna parent, student and teacher. Richard “Noosh” Nishihara is representing the LBA and I will participate on
behalf of the Lahainaluna High School Foundation. Our first meeting was scheduled for October 30th, and with more meetings to
follow. Anyone interested in sharing ideas for the working group should send them to “Noosh” @[email protected] or to

Lahainaluna High School Foundation Scholarship Program In Its 13th Year
Lahainaluna High School hosted its 2014 Scholarship Awards Program on May 7, 2014 in the new
cafeteria, Hale Pa'ina. The LHS Foundation participated by awarding a total of $166,000! Mahalo

Debuting this year was the Ebrahim Albert
Gabbay, M.D., Memorial Scholarship, for
students to pursue medicine, science or
health related careers. Kailey Sagar received
the award, presented by Suzanne Gabbay.
The Krause Chiropractic Scholarship,
now in its second year, increased its award
to three $1,000 scholarships. Awardees
were Tyrone Agbayani, Maile Altier and
Breea Yamat. Dr. Krause presented.
Another in its second year, the Sargeant James S. Kusuda Memorial Scholarship, was awarded to Zoe
Miller. Sgt. Kusuda was a police officer for 33 years. He was a boarder at Lahainaluna from the 6th grade
when the school was known as Lahainaluna Seminary and graduated in 1926. Presenting the award was Sgt.
Kusuda's daughter and donor, May Fujiwara.
Also in its second year, The Masters at Ka‘anapali Hillside - Blaze Kalilikane Memorial Scholarship
was awarded to Corban Kaikkonen. Blaze was a LHS grad, and employee of The Masters who passed
away in 2012. Lois & Roger Ross presented the award, accompanied by Blaze's sister, Brittany, pictured.
The Front Street Scholarship, which provides for renewals of up to $35,000/year, was back for its third
year and awarded to Lorilei Vistacion. Renewals were awarded to Jeremy Briones de Gracia & Chelsey

The Fred Izumi ‘52 Legacy Scholarship

SCHOLARSHIPS impact our school’s resources and programs in coming years by providing
opportunities for our students to succeed in life. There is a great sense of satisfaction in giving
back to the community and as such donors are leaving a legacy to a school that has meant so
much to them, their families and the community over the years. Each time a new scholarship is
created, donors add to the legacy of the school. MAHALO to our donors who continue to fund
these scholarships and help to Perpetuate the Torch of Excellence. I MUA!

Sue D. Cooley Stadium...a brief history
It has been more than a decade since the LHS Foundation began discussions
regarding the lack of athletic facilities at LHS, especially the need for a real
track. LHSF Board President Rob Shelton (2002-2012) made presentations
to civic groups during that time, and what started out as a dream to improve
the track blossomed into a full, multi-purpose facility that would make it
possible for the Lunas to play at home, at night.

In 2005, the Foundation officially recognized the need for a complete
athletic stadium at a strategic planning workshop.
In 2008, the 10-year goal for the athletic committee was to have the
stadium built. (DONE!)
The LUNAS host a game at the “Imu” in 2006.
In March 2007, part-time West Maui resident, Sue D. Cooley, donated
her first, anonymous, $1,000,000 towards improvements to the athletic
field and track. The gift was the result of Sue hearing the football team
sing the alma mater after a disappointing loss to Baldwin. She was
inspired by the team’s sportsmanship and grace during and after the
game. [This answers the recurring question, quoted by Lanny Tihada on
Pg 7]

Beginning in 2008, the Foundation would reach out to
the community and those outside the community, in
search of support for the stadium project. Celebrities
Rudy Ruettiger and ESPN’s Neil Everett would answer
the call, along with many local businesses and hundreds
of alumni. The Foundation hosted fundraising events
like the “Tailgate 2009” (which would become “Fire Up
da Imu”), a golf tournament, and a continuing brick
paver and bleacher sponsorship program.

In April of 2010, Hellas Construction Company started on Phase 1 of
the stadium project; the installation of an artificial-turf field, 4-lane allweather track, scoreboard, lights and makai fencing. Ninety days later
Lahainaluna had a state-of-the art field.
It wasn’t until February of 2014, that the
Foundation was able to overcome several
hurdles and begin the construction of
Phase 2. Work began on the bleacher seating for 3,000 spectators, press box, restrooms, ticket office and security fencing.

honoring her generosity in giving in excess of $7,000,000.

The Lahainaluna High School Foundation is a
non profit, 501-c-3 organization, founded by a
group of community and alumni whose vision
is to preserve and perpetuate Lahainaluna’s
culture and traditions, while providing the
students and staff with funds & improvement
projects that will promote excellence in the
educational experience at Lahainaluna.
The athletic stadium is just one of several projects
which many have supported & continue to do so
through directed donations. Brick pavers and
Bleacher Sponsorships are STILL AVAILABLE to
commemorate your gift for decades to come.
There are MANY WAYS that you can help and
continue to MAKE A DIFFERENCE. In-kind
contributions help make a positive impact, as
do monetary donations which can be directed
to the areas of your choice or wherever the
need is greatest.
The Scholarship awards continue to grow and
aid students seeking to further their education.
There’s the Friends of the LHS Library program
that continues to provide new books each year.
And remember, the LHS Foundation has awarded
more than one million dollars since 2002 towards
Grants and Sponsorships.
