GENERAL
Hillcrest Centre - General Information
vancouver.ca/hillcrestrec
Greetings Riley Park Hillcrest Patrons,
It is with mixed emotions that I address you in this latest brochure. We have had some governance
issues with the board that should never have impacted the patrons or staff of our Community Centre.
For that we apologize and hope that we can return the Hillcrest Centre back to its roots.
The governance issues were related to the Association’s bylaws being disregarded by some board
directors, resulting in unnecessary legal expenses. Those directors have recently resigned and the
remaining board members, Ken Charko in particular along with Eli Zbar, Jaimini Thakore and myself
have been working hard in a short period of time to return operations back to normal. This has required
us to rebuild the Association’s administration, re-establish financial procedures and “put our house
back in order”.
Despite these setbacks and issues, we are excited about the future of the Riley Park Hillcrest Community
Association and the positive direction we are heading. It will return to its community focus and be
more community focused: we want to be more responsive to the community and transparent to the
membership of the Association. We also want to bring about change; instead of being problem focused
we want to be solution focused, especially with the issues surrounding the Joint Operating Agreement
with the Park Board. Most importantly, we want to rebuild our cooperative relationship with our Centre’s
dedicated staff and management.
By the time you receive this brochure, the Annual General meeting will have been held and we hope
that new leadership and grassroots involvement will breathe new life into the healthy development of
our Community’s Association.
I wish you and your families all the best this year! I hope you all continue to enjoy our awesome programs
and facilities that we have worked so hard to develop in the New Year.
Jennifer Palma,
President
Riley Park Hillcrest Community Association

Health Talks
UBC – Science Based Medicine Club
The Science Based Medicine club at UBC is devoted
ADULTS
to increasing public awareness and understanding
of Alternative Medicines and practices in BC. In this
vein, we hope to achieve the following aims: 1. To
look at the safety and effectiveness of Alternative
Medicines commonly used in BC, and 2. To
make this information accessible to BC residents
without scientific training. The club is composed
of undergraduate, graduate, and medical students
at UBC.
Homeopathy:
Commonly confused with naturopathy,
homeopathy is an alternative medicine practice
from Germany that is often seen in health food
stores and pharmacies. This talk will introduce
the historical background of homeopathy and
an understanding of its belief system. We will also
discuss the current evidence base and the ethics
behind its use.
Detox:
Detox: Science or Sales Pitch? Detoxification in an
alternative medicine approach claims to remove
alleged, but undefined, toxins from the body. This
presentation will focus on the scientific evidence
and potential risks or benefits of some common
alternative detox therapies. We will also explore
the many mechanisms in which the body protects
us from the environment.
Fad Diets:
Along with the rise in obesity rates over the last
three decades, we have seen a rise in “Fad Diets”:
that is, diets that promote irregular eating patterns
in order to promote weight loss or healthy living.
This talk will analyze the evidence behind various
popular diets, and provide you with the tools to
weigh the credibility of health claims for yourself.
PAGE 36
Cleanse Diets:
Cleanse diets have become very popular, and the
word ‘cleanse’ is used to refer to a wide variety of
dietary practices. We go through what might be
some of the benefits and potential harms of doing
a cleanse, and how to investigate a claim you might
see on the internet or in the health food store.
Physical Activity:
Physical activity - as a prescription - is not often
focused on in the medical profession. However,
with the seemingly ever multiplying technological
advancements, society is able to do more and more
without exerting that extra effort. This talk aims to
describe the difference between exercise and physical
activity, as well as discuss the evidence relating
physical inactivity to the development of disease.
Vaccines:
Vaccines are a widely used public health tool but
have recently been controversial. Concerns over
autoimmune disease, autism, and adverse reactions,
along with reduced rates of infectious disease, have
called into question the necessity of immunization.
This talk will address many questions: how do
vaccines and your immune system work? What are
the risks of being vaccinated compared to catching
a disease? And how can I tell whether information
about vaccines is reliable or not?
Accupuncture:
Acupuncture is one of the most popular and well
known forms of alternative medicine. We will
review some of the evidence behind acupuncture
treatments for specific ailments: pain + nausea,
infertility, and asthma. In discussing the research,
how acupuncture may work, and causes of the
ailments being addressed, the talk will not only
address some of acupuncture’s potential benefits
and harms, but also provide tools to critically
evaluate statements about acupuncture appearing
in the popular press.

Zumba Gold for the beginner targets the largest
growing segment of the population: baby
boomers. It takes the Zumba formula and
modifies the moves and pacing to suit the needs
of the active older participant, as well as those just
starting their journey to a fit and healthy lifestyle.
What stays the same are all the elements the
Zumba Fitness-Party is known for: the zesty Latin
music, like salsa, merengue, cumbia and reggaeton;
the exhilarating, easy-to-follow moves; and the
invigorating, party-like atmosphere. Drop-in

Lap Lane Availability
PUBLIC SWIMMING AT ALL TIMES !
The Aquatic Centre at Hillcrest offers public swimming at all times, including Length Swimming
in either 50M or 25M lanes as an integral part of the aquatic program.
The Centre aims to provide a minimum of 3 lap lanes during the pool’s opening hours for length

maximize the aquatic program requirements.
This enables the Centre to be able to offer regular Aquafit Classes (deep & shallow), a comprehensive

BULKHEAD MOVES require the main pool to be free of patrons, and is scheduled at 9:00 am 9:30 am on weekdays and at 8:30 am - 9:00 am on weekends & statutory holidays.
Our MOVEABLE FLOOR in the main pool is another great asset to the centre enabling us
to provide a wider range of programs at different depths, catering as a Teaching Pool, Aquafit Pool, or for
Access Swimming programs.
