What will yours be? “I should go to the cinema more”, “I should watch more foreign language films”, “I should stop making myself watch the films of Adam Sandler”… Well we at the Belmont Filmhouse are here to assist you, and our fantastic range of films and improved membership offer (which now includes a free ticket and £10 to spend in our café bar) will really help to expand your cinematic horizons. There’s that old saying “you can’t know where you’re going until you know where you’ve been” and we are starting 2015 with a look back over some of the best titles of 2014, including Boyhood, 12 Years a Slave and Under the Skin. And this year looks to be just as strong in terms of quality – straight out of the gate we have The Theory of Everything, Birdman and Whiplash which will all find themselves mentioned quite frequently with words like BAFTA and Oscars in the coming months, with Birdman in particular showcasing what can be achieved cinematically from a technical and storytelling standpoint. It is important to stimulate and nurture that love of cinema from a young age so that is why we are introducing Filmhouse Junior screenings on Saturday mornings. Not only will we feature the best in new family films such as Paddington and The Book of Life but also classics like Mary Poppins and The Jungle Book, and tickets are only £3.50 – bargain! And for those of you who have fond (or even unfond) memories of their teenage years, we recommend coming to our special screening of Beyond Clueless, which examines the teen movie genre and the messages behind the films and will be followed by a Q&A with director Charlie Lyne. Whatever your age and whatever your cinematic tastes are, we will have something for you in 2015, so become a member and enjoy a fantastic year of movies at the Belmont Filmhouse. New Releases THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING BIRDMAN The Theory of Everything Birdman Showing from Fri 2 Jan Showing from Fri 2 Jan James Marsh • UK 2014 • 2h3m DCP • 12A – Contains brief sexualised images, mild bad language Cast: Eddie Redmayne, Felicity Jones, Charlie Cox, Emily Watson, Simon McBurney. Alejandro González Iñárritu • USA 2014 • 1h59m DCP • 15 – Contains strong language, sex references Cast: Michael Keaton, Zach Galifianakis, Emma Stone, Naomi Watts, Edward Norton. The extraordinary story of one of the world’s greatest living minds, based on Jane Hawking’s memoir, ‘Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen’, and directed by Academy Award winner James Marsh (Man on Wire). In Alejandro González Iñárritu’s big, bold, and beautifully brash new movie, one-time action hero Riggan Thomson (a jaw-dropping Michael Keaton), in an effort to be taken seriously as an artist, is staging his own adaptation of Raymond Carver’s ‘What We Talk About When We Talk About Love’. As Thomson tries to get his play in shape for the opening, he must contend with a scene-hogging narcissist (Edward Norton), a vulnerable actress (Naomi Watts), an unhinged girlfriend (Andrea Riseborough), a resentful daughter (Emma Stone), a manager who’s about to crack up (Zach Galifianikis)... and his alter ego, the superhero who made him famous, Birdman. For young Stephen Hawking (Eddie Redmayne) the future looks limitless, his brilliant mind ensuring his success as a cosmologist, while his relationship with fellow Cambridge student Jane Wilde (Felicity Jones) promising a fulfilling personal life. Then tragedy strikes when, at the age of 21, he is diagnosed with motor neuron disease. “Redmayne towers: this is an astonishing, genuinely visceral performance which bears comparison with Daniel Day-Lewis in My Left Foot.” - The Guardian An extravagant dream of a movie, alternately hilarious and terrifying. James Kent • UK 2014 • 2h10m • DCP 12A – Contains scenes of bloody injury Cast: Alicia Vikander, Kit Harington, Taron Egerton, Colin Morgan, Dominic West, Emily Watson. Director Tim Burton reunites with Ed Wood screenwriters Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski to tell the extraordinary true story of Margaret Keane (Amy Adams) and her husband Walter (Christoph Waltz), who took credit for his wife’s distinctive artworks and enjoyed fame and fortune while she toiled in anonymity, painting for sixteen hours a day under lock and key. Eventually Margaret decided she couldn’t take any more and left Walter, but how could she prove he had been deceiving the world for years and finally get the recognition she deserved? National Gallery Sun 11 Jan at 2.00pm Frederick Wiseman • France/USA/UK 2014 • 3h1m • DCP 12A – Contains infrequent strong language • Documentary Master documentarian Frederick Wiseman’s latest takes us inside one of the world’s greatest art collections, the National Gallery in London, for a privileged look that deepens our appreciation for art and its upkeep. Filming over twelve weeks in 2012, Wiseman takes in visitor tours, staff meetings, restorations, classes, and protests. As usual, he practices a strict observational approach, eschewing voice-over and interviews. His method calls upon viewers to draw their own meaning from the material, just as we do with paintings, and, for art lovers, there are endless riches to enjoy over the film’s three hours – Wiseman concentrates mostly on Old Masters, and his visit coincides with major exhibitions of Titian, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Turner. “A great, great film.” - The Telegraph Vera Brittain’s beloved WWI memoir is exquisitely realised in this moving and timely adaptation. Intelligent and free-spirited Vera overcomes the narrowmindedness of her conservative parents, winning a scholarship to Oxford. Entranced by her brother’s dashing friend Roland, who shares her literary aspirations, she plunges into an intoxicating romance. Blooming, in love and on the cusp of fulfilling her ambitions, Vera’s dreams are brutally shattered by the onset of war. “Traditional, heartfelt and stirring in all the right ways, the film feels as though it is the natural successor to the war romances of Powell and Pressburger.” - The Times New Releases WHIPLASH ENEMY Whiplash Enemy Showing from Fri 16 Jan Showing from Fri 23 Jan Damien Chazelle • USA 2014 • 1h46m DCP • 15 – Contains very strong language, strong sex references Cast: Miles Teller, JK Simmons, Paul Reiser, Melissa Benoist. Denis Villeneuve • Canada/Spain 2013 • 1h31m DCP • 15 – Contains strong sex, strong language Cast: Jake Gyllenhaal, Mélanie Laurent, Sarah Gadon, Isabella Rossellini, Joshua Peace. Fierce rhythms and ferocious humour drive Damien Chazelle’s riveting film about an ambitious jazz drummer pushed beyond his breaking point by an instructor who takes tough love to extremes. Andrew Neiman (Miles Teller) is an ambitious young jazz drummer, single-minded in his pursuit to rise to the top of his elite conservatory. Terence Fletcher (JK Simmons), an instructor equally known for his teaching talent and his terrifying methods, leads the school’s top jazz ensemble. Fletcher discovers Andrew and transfers the aspiring drummer into his band, where Andrew’s passion to achieve perfection quickly spirals into obsession, as his ruthless teacher continues to push him to the brink of both his ability and his sanity. “Demolishes the cliches of the musical-prodigy genre, investing the traditionally polite stages and rehearsal studios of a top-notch conservatory with all the psychological intensity of a battlefield or sports arena.” - Variety Based on the 2002 novel ‘The Double’ by late Nobel Prizewinning author José Saramago, the brilliant new film from Academy Award nominee Denis Villeneuve breathes new life into the doppelgänger tale. Adam Bell (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a glum Toronto history professor who seems disinterested in everything, even in sex with his beautiful girlfriend (Mélanie Laurent). While watching a movie on the recommendation of a colleague, Adam spots his exact double, an actor named Anthony Clair, in a bit part, and decides to track him down. When the two men meet, they find their lives becoming bizarrely and irrevocably intertwined. With masterly control, Villeneuve takes us on a gripping journey through a world that is both familiar and strange. 7 8 New Releases & Restored Classics GUYS AND DOLLS TRASH RESTORED CLASSIC Guys and Dolls Sun 25 & Mon 26 Jan Joseph L Mankiewicz • USA 1955 • 2h29m • DCP • U Cast: Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons, Frank Sinatra, Vivian Blaine, Robert Keith. Three young boys live in a garbage dump on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, where they spend their days searching for items they can use or sell. When they come across a wallet containing cash and a key, they soon find themselves fighting for their lives, as the corrupt local police force try to get their hands on it. A new restoration of Eric Rohmer’s comedy of manners from 1986. Left out of everyone’s summer vacation plans, unhappy Parisian student Delphine (Marie Rivière) accepts an invitation to stay at her friend’s empty apartment in Biarritz. Swedish tourist Carita tries to snap Delphine out of her bad mood by encouraging interactions with the opposite sex, but Delphine is holding out for true romance. Then a mysterious assignation brings her into contact with what appears to be the man of her dreams... Paul Thomas Anderson’s (Boogie Nights, Magnolia, There Will Be Blood, The Master) wild and entrancing new movie, adapted from a Thomas Pynchon novel, is a cinematic time machine, placing the viewer deep within the world of the paranoid, hazy Los Angeles dope culture of the early ’70s. Joaquin Phoenix goes all the way for Anderson (just as he did in The Master) playing Doc Sportello, the private investigator searching for his ex-girlfriend Shasta (Katherine Waterston), menaced at every turn by Josh Brolin as police detective Bigfoot Bjornsen. “Gloriously rambunctious.” - The Guardian Beyond Clueless/Come and See... Ed Wood BEYOND CLUELESS SPECIAL SCREENING Beyond Clueless Wed 21 Jan at 6.30pm Charlie Lyne • UK 2014 • 1h31m • DCP 15 – Contains strong sex, bloody violence, strong language, drug use Documentary ED WOOD Come and See... Monthly one-off screenings of great films we simply thought you might like to see on the big screen! A stylish documentary that combines key moments from some 200 teen movies, Beyond Clueless is written and directed by award-winning film critic Charlie Lyne, narrated by teen star Fairuza Balk and features an original score by acclaimed pop duo Summer Camp. Digging through the vaults of teen classics (and a fair few that didn’t quite make it) questions are asked about what’s really going on behind the raucous house parties, glittering prom nights and joyous graduations. Is The Craft the ultimate teenage survival guide? Can the little-seen Devon Sawa vehicle Idle Hands shine a light on the horrors of pubescence? And what’s really going on beneath the skin of Eurotrip? Putting the spotlight on the habitats, habits and behaviours of the American teenager (in all its many forms) this documentary ranges from the hilarious to the occasionally really quite scary and back again. Notoriously inept filmmaker Ed Wood, known for his hilariously bad 1950s sci-fi flicks, bizarre lifestyle and angora sweater fetish, is paid loving tribute in Tim Burton’s comedic fictionalisation of his life. Written by Burton’s Big Eyes collaborators Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, the film focuses on the ‘peak’ of Wood’s career, especially his close friendship with ageing horror star Bela Lugosi (Martin Landau, who won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his performance). The screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Charlie Lyne. “A funny, touching tribute to tenacity, energy, ambition and friendship.” - Time Out Ed Wood Tue 27 Jan at 5.45pm Tim Burton • USA 1995 • 2h7m • 35mm • 15 Cast: Johnny Depp, Martin Landau, Sarah Jessica Parker, Patricia Arquette, Bill Murray. COMING SOON A Most Violent Year A gripping New York-set drama from the director of Margin Call and All Is Lost, starring Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain. Foxcatcher Based on true events, Foxcatcher tells the dark and fascinating story of the unlikely and ultimately tragic relationship between an eccentric multi-millionaire and two champion wrestlers. Selma A powerful drama that chronicles the tumultuous three-month period in 1965 when Dr Martin Luther King Jr led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition. 9 10 7 from 14 STRANGER BY THE LAKE MR TURNER 7 from 14 A week’s worth of our favourite films from 2014! Franck’s desire continues to grow even as he witnesses Michel commit a terrible, violent act. Aware of the potential danger, possibly even excited by it, Franck ignores the advice of his wary friend Henri and indulges his passion. “The tired old trope ‘erotic thriller’ does no justice to how confrontationally and explicitly sexual this movie is – nor how thrilling, nor how menacing and complex.” - The Guardian TICKETDEAL Buy any three (or more) tickets for films in this season and get 15% off Buy any six (or more) tickets for films in this season and get 25% off These packages are available online, in person and on the phone, on both full price and concession tickets. In a small seaside town, weather-beaten patriarch Kolya lives with his teenage son and second wife. The local mayor, a drunken, corrupt bureaucrat, is set on grabbing their land for himself. When Kolya calls in his lawyer friend from Moscow, this defensive tactic triggers a series of dramatic events. Solomon (Chiwetel Ejiofor) is an accomplished violinist living as a free man in New York who is conned into joining a travelling show then brutally abducted and sold as a slave. Based on Solomon Northup’s confronting memoir, 12 Years a Slave plays out on Louisiana plantations prior to the American Civil War, exploring themes of physical deprivation, self-loathing and the absence of choice. This unrelenting, indelible work of cinema was nominated for nine Oscars and won three, including Best Picture. This superbly crafted and brilliantly acted adaptation of Bernhard Schlink’s best-selling novel opens in 1995 Berlin, where Ralph Fiennes plays aloof, emotionally numb lawyer Michael Berg. We’re swiftly conveyed back to 1958, when his younger self (played by David Kross) has a chance encounter that will forever affect him. Falling ill one day in the street, he is helped home by a stranger, Hanna (Kate Winslet). Upon recovering, he looks her up to thank her and they embark upon a passionate affair. As part of their bedroom rituals, he reads to her from books by Mark Twain, Homer and Chekhov, exposing her to worlds she never knew. But then, one day, she is gone, her apartment cleared out. Michael isn’t to see her again until eight years later, when he attends a war crimes trial as a law student in Heidelberg, and she appears as a defendant. 2 January - 5 February 2015 DATE SCREEN NUMBER & FILM TITLE Box Office 01224 343 500 www.belmontfilmhouse.com SCREENING TIMES DATE SCREEN NUMBER & FILM TITLE SCREENING TIMES Fri 2 Jan 1 1 2 2 3 3 The Theory of Everything The Theory of Everything Birdman Birdman Big Eyes Big Eyes 11.00am/2.30 6.00/8.35 11.00am/2.15 6.05/8.40 11.00am/1.25/3.45 6.10/8.30 Thu 8 Jan 1 1 2 2 3 3 The Theory of Everything The Theory of Everything Birdman Birdman Big Eyes Big Eyes 11.00am/2.30 6.00/8.35 11.00am/2.15 6.05/8.40 11.00am/1.25/3.45 6.10/8.30 Sat 3 Jan 1 1 2 2 3 3 The Theory of Everything The Theory of Everything Paddington (FJ) Birdman Big Eyes Big Eyes 11.00am/2.30 6.00/8.35 11.00am 2.15/6.05/8.40 11.00am/3.45 6.10/8.30 Fri 9 Jan * 1 1 2 2 3 The Theory of Everything The Theory of Everything Birdman Birdman Stranger by the Lake (7) 11.00am/2.30 6.00/8.35 11.00am/2.15 6.05/8.40 6.10 Sat 10 Jan * 1 1 2 2 3 The Theory of Everything The Theory of Everything The Jungle Book (FJ) Birdman Mr. Turner (7) 11.00am/2.30 6.00/8.35 11.00am 2.15/6.05/8.40 11.00am/8.10 Sun 11 Jan * 1 1 2 2 3 National Gallery The Theory of Everything The Theory of Everything Birdman Winter Sleep (7) 2.00 6.00/8.35 1.00 3.35/6.05/8.40 4.15 The Theory of Everything (B) The Theory of Everything Birdman The Theory of Everything Leviathan (7) 11am (babies + carers) 2.30 11.00am/2.15/8.40 6.00 11.00am/8.20 1 1 2 2 3 The Theory of Everything The Theory of Everything Birdman Birdman Under the Skin (7) 11.00am/2.30 6.00/8.35 11.00am/2.15 6.05/8.40 1.20/6.00 Wed 1 14 1 Jan 2 * 2 3 The Theory of Everything The Theory of Everything Birdman Birdman 12 Years a Slave (7) 11.00am/2.30 6.00/8.35 11.00am/2.15 6.05/8.40 11.00am/5.45 1 1 2 2 3 The Theory of Everything The Theory of Everything Birdman Birdman Boyhood (7) 11.00am/2.30 6.00/8.35 11.00am/2.15 6.05/8.40 11.00am/8.00 Sun 1 The Theory of Everything 4 2 Birdman Jan 3 Big Eyes 2.30/6.00/8.35 1.00/3.30/6.05/8.40 1.25/3.45/6.10/8.30 Mon 1 5 1 Jan 2 2 3 3 The Theory of Everything The Theory of Everything Birdman Birdman Big Eyes (B) Big Eyes 11.00am/2.30 6.00/8.35 11.00am/2.15 6.05/8.40 11am (babies + carers) 1.25/3.45/6.10/8.30 1 1 2 2 3 3 The Theory of Everything The Theory of Everything Birdman Birdman Big Eyes Big Eyes 11.00am/2.30 6.00/8.35 11.00am/2.15 6.05/8.40 11.00am/1.25/3.45 6.10/8.30 Wed 1 7 1 Jan 2 2 3 3 The Theory of Everything The Theory of Everything Birdman Birdman Big Eyes Big Eyes 11.00am/2.30 6.00/8.35 11.00am/2.15 6.05/8.40 11.00am/1.25/3.45 6.10/8.30 Tue 6 Jan * The majority of our screenings are scheduled well in advance, and times published in this monthly brochure and on our website.
