As we move forward and work toward our 2015 goals I believe it is important to assess the 2014 year.
We believe we have seen success in meeting the goals listed in the December 2014 Newsletter. They
have since been refined as described below for 2015. Therefore we will continue along the same path
while stressing a greater emphasis on our younger generation.
2015 Goal for Response Area One:
o Strengthen relationships between Officers & Community
o Engage younger community members
o Return a sense and feeling of safety to community members
 Reduce loitering & disorder
 Reduce violent crime incidents
 Reduce Property Crime
 Property owner accountability
The goals are a direct result of some of the concerns you expressed through personal conversations,
community meetings, emails, and an in depth review of crime trends and potential cause for the
overall quality of life issues.
In this issue I have included 10 years of statistics. Its inclusion is valuable for evaluation of the end
result of the efforts over the last decade and for thorough evaluation of success or failure of our team’s
effort since 2013. Included are statistics & chart displaying specific communities defined by
environmental and geographical boundaries. Some of which have been grouped for easier evaluation.
To better understand the information I have included the following definitions:
Part I Offense: Are serious crimes, they occur with regularity in all areas of the country, and
they are likely to be reported to Police
Citizen Initiated calls for Service: Community members contact the police and request their
presence to investigate or resolve an incident
Officer Initiated: Proactive officer involvement through static and mobile patrol; Officer action
without being prompted
OR-CIT: Officer takes time to speaks with citizen
OR-TF/ST: Vehicle Traffic Stop
ZONE-CHK: Officer in a specific area patrolling based on crime trends or specific need
Other: Community event, conducting investigations, assist community member, etc…

KT Express has seen an impressive reduction in crime incidents over the past 16 months since its
change in ownership. Their partnership and commitment to North Tryon Division and the
community they serve has made a drastic difference in the surrounding community. You may have
noticed the changes on the exterior and surrounding property. This is only the beginning.
Sharon Pines formally known as Hampton Commons was sold during November 2014. This is
exciting because the new owner /new management team and North Tryon Division have developed
a relationship that will become stronger and without question change the entire community. You
have probably already noticed the changes in the landscaping (Fence around property; Trimming of
trees; Property renovations; Sidewalk Installation) all for the good of our community. North Tryon
Division thanks you for the partnership and commitment to our area.
Much of what Response Area One has experienced is due to the continued partnerships and
development of relationships throughout our community. Communication is key. Many times one of
our Team Members will send an email, place a telephone call or even visit you to gain an
understanding of your concerns and alert you to recent crime trends. We also use Nextdoor.Com to
communicate throughout our community. Here is a recent message from our team.
Good Afternoon Everyone,
We as Response Area 0711 continue to see a rise in cooper theft. Thieves will usually target vacant
homes, especially with for sale signs in the yard. They will also target your home while out are at work.
Copper is located under your home in the crawl space area and attached to your AC unit outside. If
thieves get inside your home they will steal any and all copper inside the home. The Thieves will then
take it to a local scrap yard and sell it for just a few hundred dollars, and it will cost the homeowner
thousands to replace.
I cannot stress it enough if you see something, someone or a car that does not belong in your
neighborhood CALL 911. Allow Officers to investigate. That’s what we are here for. Don’t think anything
is too small or minor to call the Police. Those “Small" things can lead to big cases. YOU can make a
difference in your community, for your family and neighbors.
Don’t forget we also have a crime stoppers program. You can call the Crime Stopper Tip Line at 704-3361400 and remain completely anonymous. You will be given a tip number after leaving a tip. If your tip
leads to an arrest you can be eligible for a cash reward.
Together we can prevent the next crime. You can always reach me by email at
[email protected] Thanks a have a Great Day.
Sincerely, Officer C.M. ”Kristy” Helms

With Officer Helms’ message in mind, I ask that you please call us with anything suspicious. This
request is redundant, however, too many times we are told after a significant incident about someone
suspicious, someone trespassing, a vehicle backed in a neighbor’s yard, et cetera… BUT no one calls
911 while these things are occurring. Reporting these things can prevent Burglaries or Robberies,
Larceny from Auto and more.
Theft from Autos*
One of the most common types of theft in our community and throughout Charlotte is theft of
valuables from your automobile. Theft from auto is strictly a crime of opportunity that can be
prevented if you take away the opportunity. Thieves generally won’t waste their time breaking into
autos that don’t have valuables in plain sight.
Please take the precautions listed below to help ensure your auto is not targeted by thieves:
1. Keep Your Valuables Out of Sight. The best way to prevent theft from your auto is to always
keep valuables out of sight. Never leave cell phones, briefcases, suitcases, or electronic devices
(cell phones, iPods, laptop computers, etc.) in your car & in plain view. Take these items with
you, or secure them—all the time, every time.
2. Secure Your GPS Device. While many GPS devices are mounted in the dashboard of the vehicle,
the MPD encourages anyone who uses a portable GPS device to take it with you, along with any
other items of value, when you park the car.
3. Use Your Trunk. If your car has a trunk, use it. Put valuables in there or in a locked glove
compartment. Hiding items under seats is better than leaving them in plain view, but securing
them inside the glove compartment or trunk is a far better deterrent.
4. Don’t Tempt Thieves with New Purchases. During the holiday season especially, or any time
you’re shopping, place packages in the trunk, not on the passenger seats or floors.
5. Remove Your Radio Faceplate. If you can unfasten your sound system and take it with you, or
lock it in your trunk, do so. And don’t forget to do the same with your CDs and tapes.
6. Lock It Up. Also, keep your car doors and windows locked—all the time!
7. Remember: “Outta sight, outta mind”—if thieves can’t see your valuables, they’re less likely to
waste their time targeting your auto. Take the time to secure your valuables; it makes a
difference
