To fulfill our mission, The Kempe Foundation provides financial support for the programs of The Kempe Center. The Kempe Center Mission Statement The Kempe Center will provide and improve direct clinical services, improve clinical service delivery systems, and provide training, education and consultation programs to prevent and treat child abuse and neglect in Colorado and throughout the nation. The Gary Pavilion at Children’s Hospital Colorado • Anschutz Medical Campus • 13123 E. 16th Avenue, B390 Aurora, CO 80045 • 303.864.5300 • www.kempe.org Letter from the CEO and Center Executive Director Dear Friends, As we reflect on the past year, we have learned how to maximize resources enabling us to do the most good for children and families from each dollar we raise. Our community partners support effective programs that are truly life-changing. Dedicated professionals and volunteers work to reduce and someday end child abuse and neglect. Resource cuts, brought on by our struggling economy, make your gifts more important than ever. During the past two years, 1,236 more children in Colorado suffered abuse and neglect than in previous years. Fatality rates for child abuse victims in Colorado are also on the rise. The suffering of so many children is a tragedy for our community, and we must work together to protect these children. However, there is hope. Children who have been abused or neglected are not beyond help--most children, with the support of their families, and, as needed, medical and mental health services, go on to lead productive lives. During the last year, The Kempe Center provided direct services to nearly 800 children through prevention and intervention programs including the Child Protection Team, Child Trauma Program, Fostering Healthy Futures Program, Perpetration Prevention Program, State and Regional Team for Crimes Against Children (START), Training, Education and Consultation Program, and Access to Services for Parent Infant Relationship Enhancement (ASPIRE). Our staff also trained thousands of current and future professionals throughout the U.S. and around the world. With the help of individual, community, foundation, government and corporate supporters, The Kempe Foundation raised more than $2.5 million to continue to support efforts to end child abuse. Looking ahead to 2012, The Kempe Center will celebrate three huge milestones. First, the Center will have its 40th anniversary. The second milestone is the 50th anniversary of the publication of The Battered Child Syndrome. In 1962, Dr. C. Henry Kempe and his colleagues led the identification and recognition of child abuse with this defining paper. Additionally, the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (ISPCAN) will celebrate its 35th anniversary in 2012. Throughout 2012, we will celebrate these milestones with events and awareness activities. The Kempe Center and Foundation are moving forward with the goal of helping more abused and neglected children. Under new leadership and with our vision for the future, we will expand our services and treat more children. Your support of Kempe not only helps children today, but it will make an impact on children and families in the future. Help us break the generational cycle of abuse. Thank you for your ongoing support. Sincerely, Patricia Peterson, B.S.N., J.D. The Kempe Foundation President and CEO Des Runyan, MD, DrPH The Kempe Center Executive Director 1 Kempe FY2011 Major Accomplishments Child Abuse Prevention Month Activities More than 500 individuals celebrated in Parisian style and attended Kempe Takes Paris on April 8 at the Denver Marriott City Center. The event grossed more than $360,000 for The Kempe Foundation. The special appeal raised nearly $90,000. The Kempe Foundation also received pledges and donations from the 29th Annual Cherry Creek Sneak, raising more than $34,000. Kempe had more than 700 individual donations and more than 20 teams pledge their support. Giant blue ribbons adorned many of Denver and Aurora’s most prominent buildings to promote abuse prevention. The Colorado General Assembly and Gov. Hickenlooper recognized Child Abuse Prevention Month with resolutions and proclamations. Thousands of Denver Metro Area residents recieved blue ribbon magnets, blue ribbon pins, brochures and Kempe keychain wristbands during April. Additional Events Other fundraising events reached thousands of individuals in the community including: Salt on the Rim, IP5280’s Climbing for Kids, Keeping Kids on Track, Four Seasons Denver Grand Opening, Lowry Wine Walk, Saks Galleries Exhibit Opening, SPIRE Designer Within Event, the Champs Kickoff Event, and numerous Kempe Alliance activities. Foundation Awareness In FY2011, The Kempe Foundation increased the total news stories in newspapers, magazines, radio and television newscasts by 340 percent over FY2010. Kempe launched a redesigned website in October 2010 with easier navigation and mobi capabilities, making it viewable on smart phones. Additionally, Kempe’s social media presence on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Wordpress Blog grew exponentially during the last fiscal year. The 2011 Kempe Superheroes included: Carlos Gonzalez, Colorado Rockies; Brian Dawkins, Denver Broncos; Dr. Evie Dennis, Community Leader; Mary Lou Makepeace, Community Leader; and Patricia Barela Rivera, Community Leader. Superheroes appeared in public services announcements and on posters throughout the community. Kempe Center Accomplishments During FY2011, The Kempe Center hired Des Runyan, MD, DrPH, as its new Executive Director. Under his leadership and with his strategic vision, The Kempe Center will begin offering mental health clinic services to children and families in early 2012, treating more abused children than ever before and helping to break the generational cycle of abuse. The number of professionals trained by Kempe Center staff increased significantly over the previous year, from 6,336 in FY2010 to 8,298 in FY2011. Kempe Center staff have expanded their training and outreach throughout the United States and internationally. 2 50th and 40th Kempe Anniversaries A Legacy of Hope In 1962, Dr. C. Henry Kempe and his colleagues led the identification and recognition of child abuse with their defining paper, The Battered Child Syndrome. This paper was regarded as the single most significant event in creating awareness and exposing the reality of abuse. We never, ever forget his mission, vision, and belief that change is possible. Fifty years after its original publication, The Battered Child Syndrome continues to be the top download on www.kempe.org. The Kempe Center and Foundation are living legacies of a brilliant researcher, teacher and prominent pediatrician who became one of America’s pioneers in the prevention and treatment of child abuse and neglect. Due to the catalyzing efforts of Dr. Kempe, reporting laws exist in all 50 states. His efforts also led to the passage of the 1972 Colorado law requiring legal counsel for the child in all cases of suspected abuse. Dr. Kempe also recognized that practitioners and professionals would need the help of the entire community to end child abuse. The Kempe Foundation was established and community leaders, philanthropists and business people were called upon to spearhead fundraising, awareness and advocacy efforts in order to recognize and do something about child abuse and neglect. The Kempe Center and Foundation have touched the hearts and minds of children, professionals, individuals, and communities across the country and with each new move, Kempe continues the fight to stop child abuse and neglect while granting a more hopeful future for children and their families. In 2012, The Kempe Center celebrates its 40th anniversary. It also marks the 50th anniversary of the publication of The Battered Child Syndrome. While child abuse is at its lowest level in human history, we still have much to do to end child abuse. We depend on the support of dedicated professionals, committed volunteers and generous donors to help stop the devastating effects of child abuse. We have accomplished much during the last 50 years, but with more than 11,000 children abused or neglected in Colorado last year, we still need your support until organizations like The Kempe Center and Foundation are no longer needed. With a history of excellence and a new vision for the future, The Kempe Center and Foundation are moving forward with renewed conviction, energy and passion for helping abused and neglected children. Published research shows that CPTs improve diagnosis, treatment follow through, professional coordination and decreased professional “burn-out.” The Kempe Center Child Protection Team continues today. The Kempe CPT is the only hospital-based multidisciplinary child abuse program in Colorado. Its mission is to offer comprehensive, multidisciplinary consultation, assessment, treatment, and referral services for children and adolescents who may have been physically or sexually abused or neglected. Dr. C. Henry Kempe with children The Lay Therapy Program was instituted, which utilized nonprofessionals to support abusive and neglectful parents. This program laid the foundation for home visitation programs that continue today. 55 1970’s The Kempe Center opened with one vision: to recognize that children were being abused, the threat was real, and we must do something about it. The First Crisis Nursery was created, which provided care for abused and neglected children. Today, a crisis nursery is found in most U.S. communities. The Kempe Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, was founded. The International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (ISPCAN) was organized. The Kempe Child Protection Team—Offers comprehensive, multidisciplinary consultation assessment, treatment, and referral services for children and adolescents who may have been physically or sexually abused or neglected. This is a joint program of The Kempe Center and Children’s Hospital Colorado, in the University of Colorado School of Medicine’s Department of Pediatrics. The Kempe Trauma Program—Gives abused children access to the highest quality mental health treatment through providing evidence-based clinical services, training professionals, and collaborating with the National Child Traumatic Stress Network to bring expertise from all over the United States to Colorado families. The Kempe Fostering Healthy Futures Program—Fosters resilience and promotes success for pre-adolescents who have been placed in foster care following child abuse and neglect. The Kempe Perpetration Prevention Program—Reduces the risk of children being abusive, as children, as adolescents and ultimately as the next generation of adults, by promoting primary, secondary and tertiary perpetration prevention strategies. The Kempe Training, Education And Consultation Program—Provides training, education and consultation services to help audiences within Colorado and across the country prevent and treat child abuse and neglect. Access to Services for Parent Infant/Child Relationship Enhancement (ASPIRE) Program—ASPIRE treats trauma exposed children to ensure that these children do not become abusers themselves. ASPIRE is a component of The Justice Initiative for Drug Endangered Families (JI-DEF) collaboration. New Mental Health Services: Under the leadership of new Executive Director Dr. Des Runyan, The Kempe Center will begin offering mental health clinic services to children and families in 2012, treating more abused children than ever before and helping to break the generational cycle of abuse. 11 Kempe Center Metrics Activities and Outcomes Report Fiscal Year 2011: July 1, 2010 – June 30, 2011 The Kempe Center’s mission is to provide and improve direct and clinical services, improve clinical service delivery systems, and provide training and consultation programs to prevent and treat child abuse and neglect throughout Colorado and the nation.
