If you haven’t nailed down a New Year’s resolution for the health of your soul,
you might consider adopting one of these suggestions:
Compassion in Action/Outreach – page 9
Our Ministries – page 10
Fellowship, Et Cetera – page 11
(1) Read and ponder the Sunday Scriptures each week before you come to
worship. The Church’s three-year Sunday Eucharistic lectionary offers a pretty thorough exposure to the essence of the
Biblical witness. This year we are in “Year B” of the Sunday Eucharistic lectionary. You can access the Eucharistic
lectionary online at lectionarypage.net. Early each week St. Paul’s sends the upcoming readings to our “Morning
Reflections” email list, and we include some suggested questions to spur your thoughts about the readings.
To get on the email list, go to our subscriptions page:http://stpaulsfay.org/id137.html. (The Rev. Lora Walsh sends
a Morning Reflection to that list based on the Daily Office reading for the day on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.)
We also have instructions posted online about Lectio Divina, a traditional way to read and pray with
scripture: http://stpaulsfay.org/id272.html
(2) Pray the Daily Office. Reading Morning Prayer or Evening Prayer is one of the traditional ways Anglicans pray together
daily around the world. The Office offers a balance of prayer, scripture and response. Lowell describes how to use
the Book of Common Prayer and your Bible to read the Office at home in his Practicing Prayer booklet available from the
office. There is an online version of the Office at missionstclare.com. Many people access it from their computer, tablet or
smart phone. When you pray the office, you join millions of Anglicans from around the world in prayer. We read
Morning Prayer in the Guild Hall each weekday at 8:00 a.m. We have an abbreviated form of Evening Prayer in the
Church weekdays at 5:30 (except Wed.)
(3) Practice Centering Prayer. Based on an ancient Christian contemplative practice, Centering Prayer has been a source of
healing, wholeness and peace for many of St. Paul’s people. It is a simple prayer. The Guidelines can be found
here: http://is.gd/Centering. We have a Centering Prayer Support Group that meets Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. We host 20
minutes of shared silence each weekday right after Morning Prayer (around 8:20) and at 4:00 p.m. in the Library.
There are many ways to pray and many ways to nurture your soul. Make a New Year’s resolution to care for your soul in
2015.
Vestry Nominees Selected
Our balloting in December resulted in the following persons nominated for Vestry: Jacqui Brandli,
Alan Ostner, Sandy Prince, and Gary Whicker. Election will be held at the annual Meeting at 10:00
a.m. in the church on Sunday, January 25 th. Sally Langford has agreed to serve as Clerk of the Vestry.

January Headlines
Saturday, January 10th –
McMichael Speaker Returns
Archeologist Dr. Charles Page returns to share his
unique insight into the land
and the Bible as an
archeologist and scholar
working in the Holy Land for
over thirty years. His keynote
address will be Saturday,
January 10 at 7:00 p.m. with a
reception beforehand from
6:00-7:00. Dr. Page will offer a
briefer session Sunday, Jan. 11 at 10:00. His previous
visit in 2003 was received with great acclaim.
Burns Night
Mark your calendars for Saturday,
January 24th at 6:00 pm! The Ozark
Highlanders are once again hosting
Burns Night to celebrate the life of
Scottish poet, Robert Burns. The
night begins with happy hour at six,
the procession of the haggis at six forty-five, with dinner
and program to follow.

Linda Jones at 479-601-2571. Tickets must be purchased in

kilt and come celebrate with the Highlanders!
Delegates and Alternates
Needed for Diocesan
Convention
It is time to think about
selecting delegates and
alternates for the Diocesan
Convention in February.
This year the convention is
in Little Rock. Dates are
Friday and Saturday, February 13th & 14th. St. Paul’s is
entitled to 4 alternates and 4 delegates, who must be
confirmed and active members. St. Paul’s will cover
expenses of delegates, but not alternates.
Diocesan Convention is a good way to meet
Episcopalians from other churches and to learn what the
Diocese is about and what the issues are for the Church
in our state.
If you would like to be a delegate or an alternate,
submit your name to Suzi Freeman by Sunday, January
18. The Vestry will set the slate of names at its January
meeting on 20th.
Bible Verses Related to Today’s
Issues – Coming in February
Chuck Walling will be offering a new class beginning
the first Sunday in February and going for six
succeeding Sundays. The issues that we will be looking
at are immigration, poverty, the environment, war, and
women. Is there a Judeo-Christian approach to such
issues? Sign up and a short reading list is available in
Father Chuck’s office. See page6 for more info.
St. Paul’s Used Book Sale
St. Paul’s will host its annual used book sale Saturday,
January 31st from 9:00-5:00 and Sunday, February 1st
from 9:00-1:00. All paperbacks will be $0.50. Hardcovers
will be $1.00. Proceeds of the sale will be donated to the
Church Periodical Club. Now is a great time to clean
those bookshelves! Donations will be taken
beginning January 11th! Contact Jane Keen at
[email protected] if you are
interested in volunteering or have questions.

So Many People to Thank This
Time of Year!
The clergy and staff of St.
Paul’s extend incredible
thanks to all of our
volunteers – phone and
office, Community Meals,
newsletter mailing crew,
van drivers, ministry
leaders, and all others who make what we do possible. Y’all are
serious lifesavers; you keep our hair from going completely
white and help to define the community we are so proud to
represent. Thank you.
Thank you to all who contributed to our Secret Santa
program, sending gifts to children of the NWA
Correctional Facility. Our parishioners sent gifts to 40 kids
for 18 moms, with a card "From your Mom's Santa's
Helper," letting them know that their mother is
remembering them on Christmas.
Thanks to all who baked a
holiday ham for
Community Meals. And
thank you to those who
purchased gifts for our
Angel Tree, for our
Community Meals guests. A
special thank you to Susie
Arnold, Amanda Robinson
and her wonderful youth group volunteers, Rebecca
Hass, and the many parishioners who helped out giving
away gifts on Monday, December 22nd.

Thank You, cont’d
This year’s Fake It, Don’t Bake
It cookie and baked goods sale
netted $728 for 7hills Homeless
Center. Thank you Katherine
Thrift for organizing and
leading the project and to
everyone else who baked and
bought.
A MOUNTAIN OF THANK YOUS goes to Matt and
Pene Musial for their incredible work promoting the
Pictorial Directory. We could not have done it without
them, and we are so excited about the project! Here’s a
brief note from Matt:
Thank you to Kaye Bernard,
Sallie and Cliff Langford,
and Shea Weidner who
helped with registering
people who came in for
photos. They were a
tremendous help when Pene
and I needed them. The next
steps are to get with Suzi on
the printed directory then send everything to Lifetouch
for them to print up a draft copy for review.
And thanks to all of the 273 families and individuals who
had their pictures taken for the Parish Directory.
We could never have
pulled off the Advent
Wreath Making and
Soup Supper without all
the help offered,
especially from those
who just show up and
ask what they can do.
Thanks specifically to the following individuals:
Bruce & M.L. Wilkins: Making candle bases
Betsy Corwin: Making soup
Brad & Rebecca Gilmer: Parish Hall setup and clean up
LaNita McKinney & Bill Brookshire: Setup and serving
during the event
Rebecca Hass & Jana Mayfield: Providing natural
materials for wreaths
Alan Ostner, Charlie Rigsby & Bruce Wilkins
New Furniture!
Former
parishioner Sandy
Nelson recently
sold her house and
gave St. Paul's
some great
furniture, books
and equipment.
Chairs for the Library, some adjustable tables for our
classrooms, other chairs and a great collection of books
for our upcoming CPC Booksale. Many of you
remember Sandy as Laura Alexander. She changed her
name a while back. We are so grateful for her
generosity.

Spiritual Formation for Adults
Spring Inquirers’ Classes Start February 24th
This season’s Inquirer’s Classes will be on Tuesday nights starting February 24 th, from 6:00-7:30 p.m.
in the Library. The class is a great introduction for anyone who is new to St. Paul’s or the Episcopal
Church. Our text, Your Faith, Your Life: An Invitation to the Episcopal Church, by Jennifer Gamber, is
available from the bookstore.
Bishop’s Visitation: Confirmation, Reception, Reaffirmation on Sunday, May 3rd.
Sunday Mornings @ 10:00 – Four Offerings for Adults
Sunday Morning Bible Study: The Epistle to the Romans
It may be the most important single piece of literature in Christianity: Paul's masterpiece. His
most theological and systematic writing. The Epistle to the Romans has profoundly influenced
Christian history and theology. And it's not easy to read. If you've never studied this
important book, here is your chance.
Live-Streamed on our website -- go to stpaulsfay.org and click the Church Online button in
the upper right corner. In the Parish Hall. Bring your Bible.
Contemporary Issues and the Judaeo-Christian Tradition
Coming February 1st. We will look at some of today's issues (immigration, environment, the poor, the inequality of
wealth) and see if as heirs of the Judaeo-Christian tradition can contribute to the debates about these issues. Sign up list
and a short reading list is available in Father Chuck's office.
IMMIGRATION. The United Nations estimates about 175 million people are on
in the process of immigrating from one place to another. This is a world-wide
problem and not just a border problem with Mexico. Does the Judeo-Christian
tradition have anything to add to the debate(s) about immigration?
Practicing Presence
This class meets in the Library and is reading and discussing The Path of Centering Prayer:
Deepening Your Experience of God, by David Frenette (available in the bookstore). The class begins
at 10:00 with 20-30 minutes of shared silence, followed by conversation about the book and about
being awake and mindful in the present moment.
Parents Conversation Group
This grou p m eets in the Green Room (across from the nu rsery). The grou p recently sw itched books and is
now read ing and d iscu ssing Rabbi Rami’s Guide to Parenting.
Theology on Tap – Postponed Until February
Our books did not come in, so we're cancelling January's scheduled Theology on
Tap conversation. We will start our new book the first Tuesday in February, Tuesday, Feb. 3, 6:008:00 at Emelia's Mediterranean Café on Dickson St. Our new book is The Grace in Dying: A Message of
Hope, Comfort, and Spiritual Transformation by Kathleen Dowling Singh. Dr. Singh is a psychologist
who works with hospice patients. Read the forward and first two chapters, thru page 43. Books will be
available for purchase in the bookstore sometime soon.

The Mary Miller Labyrinth – A note from Mary
You could have knocked me over with a feather when at
my retirement reception
Lowell gave me a gift and
inside was a plaque
naming the labyrinth The
Mary Miller Labyrinth. I am
so pleased and honored
and humbled.
Now that I am retired, I
hope to be more attentive
to the labyrinth schedule. We will continue to open the
labyrinth for walks on the 2nd Tuesday of every
month. Perhaps we'll also have some workshops and
other activities around the labyrinth this year.
Thank you for your prayers for and support of the
Labyrinth Ministry at St. Paul's. Next labyrinth is
Tuesday, January 13th, 7:00 - 10:00 p.m.

Weather Policies
Children’s Ministries
We always have Church on Sundays. Use your good
sense and discretion though. If the Fayetteville Public
Schools close, our default is to cancel our
programming for that day unless the particular program
wishes to meet nonetheless. If the public schools are
closed, Youth events are cancelled. If there is a hazardous
weather warning, youth events are cancelled. Go
to weather.gov, type in our zip code, and look for
warnings. We'll try to get notices out to parents and
youth.

Magdalene Fayetteville
Magdalene House Trauma Training
On Monday, Jan 19, 2015 we will start a 12 session course for people who are interested in woman and
trauma, either because they will be working with Magdalene House or for other purposes. The course
will meet on three Monday evenings a month from 6:30 to 8 pm at St. Paul's . You may get exact dates,
hard copies or email of curriculum, journal articles, book information from Katie Nichol in the Church
Office.
The information covered in the class includes phenomenology, neurophysiology, research
studies, theoretical approaches, and self-reports of trauma in children, adolescents and adult females
in the U. S. We will also focus on developmental trauma, attachment disorders, social, economic,
cultural, racial, and social issues which contribute to females, suffering every kind of abuse, and ending up addicted,
working in sex trade or surviving through sexual behaviors, becoming incarcerated and eventually reclaiming healthy
lives. Information about factors putting women at risk or factors which may be protective will be discussed. There will be
many videos of experts in the field, both researchers and clinicians. We will have several professors from the U of A
School of Social Work talking about their areas of expertise: incarceration and exiting the sex trade. There will be at least
a half hour of discussion each session. Do the reading if you possibly can, but come even if you have not. Frances
Woods, Clinical and Community Psychologist will moderate.

OUTSIDE performance Friday, May 1st in the Parish Hall at St. Paul’s. This performance

facebook or our website, http://www.nwaprisonstories.com/ for more information.
Performance of Men’s Writing from Pine Bluff
Scheduled for Saturday, February 7th at the Fayetteville Underground. This performance will showcase the writing of 20
incarcerated men from the 5-hour writing workshop we conducted during our residency in Pine Bluff last November.
This should be a truly moving, and importantly stunning event – Men in prison hearing from women in prison, and then
writing their own stories. We’ll keep you posted as details are pinned down.

Our Ministries
Healing Touch
One of our most powerful quiet ministries is Healing
Touch, a grounded practice of prayer and healing
energy. We have several trained ministers of Healing
Touch who serve both at St. Paul’s and at Hi Acres, 500
N. Sequoyah, the beautiful former home of Eva Stalker
on the top of Mt. Sequoyah given to St. Paul’s and First
U. Presbyterian Church for our ministries.
Holly Aaron is passing the scheduling plate to Grace
Culpepper, who has so graciously accepted the duty.
Holly will continue to coordinate the classes and the
Healing Touch gatherings, but people should contact
Grace for appointments. Continue to contact Holly for
information or classes or if they are interested in serving
in the ministry. Grace's her phone number is 479-2008902 and her email is [email protected].
Caring Friends Respite Ministry
Caring Friends is an outreach ministry offering 4 hours of
respite care weekly for families who live with a loved
one who has dementia or Alzheimer's disease.
We welcome up to 12 "Friends" to stay with us on
Thursdays, 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. "Companions" play,
exercise, sing, eat and do various fun and stimulating
activities together with our Friend guests. During that
time their caregivers have an opportunity to attend to
things that they need to do outside the home, and maybe
have a nice, leisurely lunch.
To inquire about having your loved one participate with
us as one of our Friends, please email
[email protected] or call Stephanie Sawyer at 4452640. We welcome volunteers to be Companions who
work with our guests, and volunteers to help prepare
snacks and lunch in the kitchen. More volunteer info
from [email protected]
Rosen Movement
Based on physical therapy and set to music, these easy
unhurried movements are designed to improve
alignment and flexibility and to lubricate the joints. They
increase range of motion, ease of breathing and deepen
awareness of the body. Movements are simple; yet,
stress releasing and energizing – class participants leave
feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and more in touch with
themselves. Bring a mat, and wear comfortable clothing.
Class meets Thursdays from 8:30-9:30 am in the Parish Hall.
Yoga
One hour, soft yoga classes offered twice weekly – free
of charge and open to all. Both classes follow the school
schedule for closings due to inclement weather.
 Tuesdays at 5:30 pm, led by Judy Stephen
 Fridays at 8:30 am, led by Jamie Leigh White
Note: we will NOT have yoga January 30 due to St. Paul's
annual book sale. (Be sure to check out the great deals)
Centering Prayer Support Groups
We have a group meeting to support people in their
practice of Centering Prayer. Our evening group meets
on Tuesday nights at 7:00 pm in the Upstairs Green
Room.
The group is open and people are encouraged to join
any time. Some knowledge of Centering Prayer is
helpful, but we can give instruction for anyone trying
Centering Prayer for the first time.
Community Meals
Community Meals feeds over 300 meals to low income
and homeless people each week. If you would like to be
a part of this important ministry please contact our
volunteer coordinator Susie Arnold, or just drop by and
see what we do on Mondays and Wednesdays
beginning at 9:00 am.
Helping Paws Too, a therapy dog support group
Leashed and well behaved dogs are welcome to attend.
Please bring a snack or treat to share if you can. Also
any blankets or washable old towels will be
collected along with treats and toys, leashes and collars
(gently used is fine) for the animal shelter. Contact
Kathy Wilson, [email protected], for more information.
This is only a sampling of the wonderful opportunities offered through St. Paul’s. Visit the church calendar online to
view our calendar of events or call the office with specific questions about our ministries.

Fellowship, Et Cetera
Dinners for 8
This is our Rotating Potluck Dinner for 8 (more or less). Singles, couples, nonchurch members, ALL are welcome to share food, drink and good conversation.
Dinners have been everything from take-out pizza to full-course meals; around
a kitchen table, in a formal dining room or on a patio, on the floor, or in a
restaurant. Usually meets the last Friday of the month.
Email Teresa Uth to participate: [email protected]. She'll email you back to see if
you would like to host or to attend, then she'll align the group up among the hosts. Hosts call the shots – how many,
where, and cuisine. It's great fun and a good way to deepen old friendships and make new friends.
Gallup Poll
A recent Gallup survey says 82% of people who don't attend church would attend if
invited by a friend.
INVITE A FRIEND TO ST. PAUL'S!
It's an 8 out of 10 chance that they would love for you to do so.
Help us Host Interfaith Harmony Day
On Saturday, February 7th, St. Paul’s will host Fayetteville’s Interfaith Harmony Day, a delightful
event which showcases diverse faith groups in our community in a spirit of celebration and
