APA NEWS
January 2015
Things have settled down to a dull roar in
the office. I ended the year on a good note
by attending the APA Annual in Knoxville the
first weekend of December. It was a busy
weekend, but I really enjoyed talking with
everyone. The club did a great job with the
show, it was very well run and with over
4,000 birds, I’m sure there were a lot of tired
club members on Sunday evening. I would
like to thank them all for their dedication to
exhibition poultry.
The directors had a very productive meeting on Friday evening. The by-law changes
that were advertised were approved by the
board, and the Splash Cochin and Blue
Wheaten Old English were accepted into the
Standard. Complete information on both
items will be published in the January News
& Views. The board also approved the Flock
Certification program, which they hope to
implement as soon as possible; once again
the complete information will be in the News
& Views.
The general meeting on Saturday evening
began with a great meal at a local restaurant
in Knoxville, and the highlight of that meeting were honoring people who have devoted
a good part of their life to promoting and
APA and standard bred poultry. Congratulations go to Doris Robinson, Andy Marsinko,
Roland Romig, S. Robert Powell and Curtis
Oakes.
I will begin sending show reports this
month, please be sure to read the paperwork
that comes with the report as there will be
some minor changes. Also, please note on
your dues notices that if your dues expire on
January 1 and you have not renewed by July
1 you will be put on an inactive list and all
points you have will be voided. I will continue this with anyone who has dues due on
July 1, 2015.
Merchandise sales have been good in December, there still seems to be interest in
the 2010 Standard for Christmas gifts; this
shows that there are still a lot of new people
becoming interested in standard bred poultry. One of the special items offered at
Knoxville was a t-shirt designed just for the
Knoxville Show.
We had a great response and only had 3
shirts left. I would like to know from the
members if you think this is something we
should continue with for every annual meeting. If you have time, just let me know.
Ruth Caron of Texas was the designer, she
does a wonderful job and I am sure would be
willing to help with another one if asked.
The paperwork is again piling up, so I will
get back to work

Probiotics, prebiotics & yeast: Do your chickens need them?
Shoreview, Minn. [December 16, 2014] –
Probiotics, prebiotics and yeasts are three big
buzzwords in backyard flock nutrition – but
what’s the story behind these feed ingredients and how do they work?
Gordon Ballam, Ph.D., director of lifestyle
innovation & technical service for Purina
Animal Nutrition, says probiotics, prebiotics
and yeasts aid in feed digestion and nutrient
absorption by supporting digestive health.
“The hen’s digestive tract is complex, with
many moving pieces,” he says, citing Figure
1. “After birds gather and eat feed, the feed
travels to the foregut (esophagus, crop,
proventriculus and gizzard) where it is digested and prepared for absorption. Feed then
travels to the midgut, or the small intestine.
Here, nutrients begin to be absorbed. Remaining nutrients travel to the hindgut (large
intestine, ceca and cloaca) where waste is excreted.”
“Millions of bacteria, known as microflora, live inside the digestive system,” Ballam
says. “Some of these bacteria are beneficial,
while others are harmful and can cause digestive upset and internal damage. The suc-
cess of the digestive system depends on a
higher ratio of beneficial to harmful bacteria.”
One way to promote this internal balance
is with probiotics, prebiotics and yeasts.
Look for these ingredients in a complete
layer feed.
Pro biot ics
Probiotics work to strengthen the beneficial bacteria in the digestive system.
“Probiotics are essentially the beneficial
bacteria required by the digestive tract,”
Ballam says. “They support the other bacteria in the digestive tract. A healthy digestive
system helps feed to break down and be absorbed which supports chick and hen health.
You can feed these beneficial bacteria directly to your birds through their feed.”
Pre biotics
The role of prebiotics is to provide nutrients to the healthy bacteria.
“While prebiotics help support digestive
hea lth, the y work diffe rently than
probiotics,” Ballam explains. “Prebiotics are
not actual live bacteria, but are a form of carbohydrate. This carbohydrate provides nutrition to the healthy bacteria, supporting their
growth.”
Yeasts
The third component in the digestive health
equation is yeasts. Yeasts work to promote
the growth of healthy bacteria in the digestive tract, while keeping the harmful bacteria
in check.
“Dried yeasts have been used in animal
nutrition for many years, primarily as a source
of quality proteins and B vitamins,” Ballam
says. More recently, yeasts have become an
important ingredient to poultry feed because
of their ability to support digestive health and
immune function.”
Three ingredients in one feed . . .Because
each ingredient plays a different role in diges tive tra ct health, a combina tion of
probiotics, prebiotics and yeasts is recommended to help keep birds healthy.

Selection Toward a Suitable Breeding Base
By Brian Reeder
As I have been recording here in a series
of articles over the last year, I have been starting over since a weasel strike wiped me out
of my large fowl lines. I have written several
articles detailing the new methods of housing and the new birds I have brought in to
select a small breeding base of bantams. In
my last article a couple of months ago, I was
at about 24 birds. Since then, I have culled
significantly and am currently down to seven
birds (3 males and 4 females). While I would
have been ok with having had more keepers
than the seven I still have, I am also fine with
the number I am now at and may yet cull further. There is really no way to know, as I will
continue culling as any problems appear and
if I end up with only one pair, that is really all
I have to have to start over and make my own
line. However, the current group seems fairly
stable and may well remain. Time will tell.
What is interesting to me (though not surprising) is that the seven birds I have left are
six Partridge Wyandotte bantams and one
Rhode Island Red bantam pullet.
Now you may remember that I ordered
around 70 chicks this spring. I usually consider a one in ten ration to be about average
for me, as I am picky. I usually suggest to
folks that if they want to start with really good
individual birds from hatchery stock, ordering ten for every one you want is a good idea,
generally.
However, if you remember from a previous article, I only ordered ten of the Wyandotte chicks, so with six of those left, that is
a much, much higher ratio of keepers than I
am generally expecting. Conversely, the
other breeds in the order, such as Yokohama
or Old English Game Bantams actually didn’t
meet the 1/10 ration I expect in most instances. I am telling you this to show you how
the suggestion of the 1/10 ration is a generalization and will not apply in every case.
Looking back, it certainly would have been
easier to just order the Wyandotte and Rhode
Island Red bantam chicks, but I was really
hoping that there would be one or two birds
of the other types that would have worked out
for me. I will say though that I am not terribly surprised that they didn’t. There are certain behaviors/temperaments that just don’t
work with me. What is most interesting to
me is the consistency of traits within some
of these breeds regardless of which catalog
they come from or if they are show lines.
These are not just consistently bad traits
though, as every line of Partridge Wyandotte
bantams I have ever worked with have been
An Exhibition line Partridge Wyandotte Bantam Hen with a catalog type Partridge

consistently good birds, for instance. This
current experience just underlines this. So
would it have been easier to just order them?
Yes, but I was not certain what they would be,
so I felt the best thing was to experiment and
see what happened. My experience yet again
underlines how good the Partridge Wyandotte
bantams typically are.
In the past, I had ordered Partridge Wyandotte bantams from Murray McMurray and
they were typical of the lines I have seen
(though I don’t believe they are carrying these
any more). I have worked with several exhibition lines of this variety of the breed also
and have found them to be consistent. Now,
this Cackle group of the same variety and
breed show the same traits. This leads me to
suspect that this variety of the breed in the
bantam size likely descend from one basic
group or line, perhaps even a very few individuals, that happened to have these many
good qualities, and so the line is now inbred
for these traits and they are fairly locked in.
In my opinion, these traits are more locked
in, in this variety of the breed, than in any
other breeds I have ever seen or worked with.
This may well be an example of the inbreeding of good traits and how that can create a
superior line. We often think of inbreeding

stant comparison of what a calmer, better line
looks like. The one RIR bantam pullet that I
have retained is the nicest of the group with
the least tendency to bite and is a sound and
healthy bird. I hope to breed her with one of
the Wyandotte males and work toward possibly a black tailed red Wyandotte variety, but
we will have to see. I don’t want to count my
breeders before they are proven.
I will be keeping this article shorter than
usual, as I don’t have a lot to report. Right
now, I am just in a holding pattern and won’t
know much for a few more months. Once I
have more details, I will relay them here. I
hope it is helpful to some of you, especially
beginners, to understand how I form a base
for breeding from hatchery stock. I think it
is especially important for folks to under-
stand that every bird you bring in or hatch
won’t work out. It is important to be prepared
for this and helps you not to be disappointed
with losses or birds that just don’t work out
or you find you just can’t stand.
It is not infrequent that the breed we think
we must have based on visual appeal turns out
to be incompatible with our temperament or
management style/system.
While that can be disheartening, do not let
it knock you out of keeping chickens. Just
keep looking and you will find something that
works for you. If you had asked me twenty
years ago if I thought I would end up finding
the Partridge Wyandotte bantams to be the
best chickens for me, I would have been incredulous, and yet, here we are and that is
the case.

as a bad thing, but it is only bad if there are
deleterious (bad) genes there to begin with.
If there or no (or few) deleterious factors
and many good factors, then inbreeding can
concentrate those good traits to create a superior line. One of the biggest problems I
find with a really good line is how bad it makes
lesser lines appear. I believe the presence of
the Partridge Wyandotte bantams made the
other lines look even less acceptable and this
made it even less likely that I would retain
any of those. The Rhode Island Red bantams
for instance were nice, but had a tendency to
bite. I might have tolerated that more if the
Wyandotte bantams weren’t here to be a con-
Young Partridge Wyandotte Pullets from my spring 2014 order from Cackle Hatchery.
