Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about being Required to Withdraw
Q. Why am I ‘Required to Withdraw’?
A. If you have been Required to Withdraw (RTW), it was for one or more of the following reasons:
i. A CGPA of less than 1.00 (except students enrolled in their first semester); or
ii. A TGPA below 1.67 while on probation; or
iii. Violation of any approved Department/School Standing variation; or
iv. Violation of a Probationary Contract (e.g. including: Failure to submit a Probationary
Contract.).
Q. What does it mean to be ‘Required to Withdraw’?
A. To be Required to Withdraw means that you will not be allowed to continue in the Ted
Rogers School of Business Management program for one full year (unless you are eligible to
take part in the Fresh Start Program mentioned above), during which time you will not be
permitted to take any courses at Ryerson, and any courses taken elsewhere will not be counted
for credit towards your program or used for qualifying purposes for your program whatsoever.
Q. How long must I sit out of the Ted Rogers School of Business Management program if I
have been ‘Required to Withdraw’ and I am not eligible to take part in the Fresh Start
Program?
A. Students who have been Required to Withdraw from the Ted Rogers School of Business
Management program may not continue their studies for a minimum of one full year. i.e. twelve
months. Students who are Required to Withdraw as a result of their Fall 2014 Academic Standing
are not eligible to return to any Ryerson classes until Winter 2016, subject to program permission,
a 'Qualifying' probationary contract and course availability.
Q. How do I return to the Business Management program?
A. You may return to the Ted Rogers School of Business Management program if and when you
are eligible, and will have a ‘Qualifying Probationary’ status. Upon returning, you will be
registered as ‘probationary’ and must agree to adhere to a Qualifying Probationary Contract.
Students who wish to return will formally declare their intention to do so by submitting
appropriate applications to the Office of Student Achievement.
Students assigned a RTW status at the end of the Fall 2014 semester (and do not take part in the
Fresh Start Program) are eligible to return for the Winter 2016 semester. Please complete the
Request for Reinstatement form at:

documentation to support your rational in the Supplementary Form section of the Request
for Reinstatement. The deadline to apply for reinstatement can be found under Significant
Dates in the Undergraduate Calendar.

If you are Required to Withdraw as a result of your academic standing, you should inquire
by email about returning on a Qualifying Probationary basis, to the Coordinator, Student

Q. What is a Qualifying Probationary Contract?
A. THIS IS THE CONTRACT YOU WILL BE ISSUED AFTER RETURNING FROM YOUR
12-MONTH REQUIRED TO WITHDRAW PERIOD, if you did not take part in the Fresh Start
Program.
FULL-TIME STUDENTS
The contract will list exactly two courses, selected by the Student Achievement Advisor (not the
student) that the student must take in their qualifying probationary semester and obtain at least
least 1.67 (C-) in each course in order to continue as a Ted Rogers School of Business
Management student with Probationary or Clear academic standing, as your CGPA allows. Any
deviation from this, i.e. more than two courses, or registration in courses other than those
selected by the Student Achievement Officer, will result in your being Permanently Withdrawn
from the University with no chance at further reinstatement in the Ted Rogers School of
Management. The contract will be signed by both the student and the Student Achievement
Advisor.
If you seek permission to drop one of your two prescribed courses before the deadline date to do
so in Good Academic Standing, you will be required to take the course the following semester
once again on a qualifying basis with a new Qualifying Probationary Contract. Further, if you
take one course per semester, you must achieve a minimum of "C-" in each course. You have
the option to drop each course once on your Qualifying Probation Contract.
PART-TIME STUDENTS
The contract will give the student the option of taking one or two courses, selected by the
Student Achievement Advisor (not the student) that the student must take in their qualifying
probationary semester and obtain a TGPA of at least 1.67 in order to continue as a Ted Rogers
School of Business Management student with "Probationary" or "Clear" academic standing, as
your CGPA allows. Any deviation from this, i.e. more than two courses, or registration in
courses other than those selected by the Student Achievement Office, will result in your being
Permanently Withdrawn from the University, with no chance at further reinstatement in the Ted
Rogers School of Business Management. The contract will be signed by both the student and the
Student Achievement Advisor.
Q. Is a Qualifying Probationary Contract the same as the Probationary Contract that I have
filled out in the past?
A. No, these two contracts are not the same. The Qualifying Probationary Contract is more
restrictive, and represents the last chance a student will have in attempting to continue their
studies in the Ted Rogers School of Business Management. If a student is not successful, they
will be Permanently Withdrawn. (PPW)
Q. Which courses will I have to take during my qualifying probationary semester and why?
A. The courses will be selected by the Student Achievement Advisor using a set of objective
criteria which are guided by the following principles:
I understand that I must take two courses to complete my qualifying contract. Do they need to
be taken in the same term?
No, you can take two courses in one term or one over two consecutive terms. See the different
rules below.
Single-term Qualifying Period
i)
You must take the two courses identified by the Advisor in one term and must achieve a
minimum TGPA of 1.67.
ii)
You may drop each course only by the deadline only once but must take it in the
subsequent term. Choosing this option means you must follow the two-term qualifying
period regulations.
iii)
You may receive an INC only once in each course.
Two-term Qualifying Period
i)
You must take one course in each term as determined by the Advisor.
ii)
You must receive a minimum 1.67 or C- in EACH COURSE. This is regardless of your
TGPA or CGPA.
iii)
You may drop a course with permission but must take it in the subsequent term.
The successful completion of these courses will meaningfully improve your CGPA.
The successful completion of these courses will signify to the School that you have overcome
past failures which will increase the chances that you will successfully complete your degree.
As a general guideline, you will be required to take the two courses that you had the most trouble
with in the past (usually F’s), depending on availability. Students will not be permitted to select
their own courses for their qualifying probationary semester. Any deviation from the contract will
result in Permanent Withdrawal from the School of Business Management.
Q. What if I don’t achieve a TGPA of 1.67 in the courses selected for me during my qualifying
probationary semester?
A. Required to Withdraw students will only have one chance at qualifying to continue their
studies with the Ted Rogers School of Business Management. If you do not achieve a TGPA of
1.67 (an average of C-) in your qualifying probationary semester, then your Academic Standing
will be Permanently Withdrawn from the Ted Rogers School of Business Management program,
with no chance at further reinstatement into the Business Management program.
Q. What do I do about courses for which I have signed up for the next semester, not knowing
that I would be ‘Required to Withdraw?’
A. If they are day school courses, they will be dropped by the school. If they are CE or Distance
Education courses, then you are responsible for dropping them. You are entitled to a refund.
Q. Will I be eligible for OSAP for my qualifying probationary semester?
A. Often students most likely will not be eligible for OSAP if they take less than three billing
units (courses) in a term. Students are therefore advised to plan ahead in order to finance their
qualifying probationary semester, in which they will not be permitted to take more than two (2)
courses. Further, students may have to begin paying back OSAP they received prior to their
Required to Withdraw period during their Required to Withdraw period.
