T.J.’s selfless thoughts for others
– people he would never know
– set into motion a vision that
would captivate the hearts and
imaginations of countless others.
His story has brought together
some of the most well-known and
accomplished recording artists,
entertainment executives and,
most recently, legendary golfer
Arnold Palmer who was chosen
by the T.J. Martell Foundation as
the honoree of the 2011 Lifetime
Achievement Award.
T.J., a 17-year-old high school
student, was battling leukemia. He
asked his father, music industry
executive Tony Martell, to raise a
million dollars for cancer research
so that “no one else will have
to experience what I am going
through.”
As I traveled to New York to attend
the awards gala, I could not help
but reflect on how one measures a
life well-lived. Is it determined by
how far we climb in our careers?
Fame and fortune? The material
possessions we accumulate?
Perhaps it is as simple as linking
our personal passion, our life’s
work, and the resulting fruits
to ultimately benefit people for
generations into the future.
Although Tony had no fundraising
experience, he agreed. Two years
later T.J. passed away, and Tony
set forth on his journey to fulfill

During the event, held at
the Marriott Marquis Times
Square in New York, several
awards were bestowed on
entertainment and business
leaders while raising a
record $1.3 million for cancer research. Among the other
celebrities in attendance were daytime television icon,
Susan Lucci, Grammy-winning country group Rascal Flatts,
Donald Trump, and Will.i.am from the Black Eyed Peas. Rucker performed two songs for the crowd, including a
Frank Sinatra song dedicated to Mr. Palmer.
The T.J. Martell Foundation has been a driving force
nationally for leukemia, cancer and AIDS research. The
foundation has given over $250 million for these causes,
primarily through their partner hospitals and research
facilities. In 2011, Arnold Palmer Medical Center joined
the elite list of only eleven partner hospitals in the
country, which includes The Mayo Clinic, Memorial
Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Massachusetts General
Hospital Cancer Center and The University of Texas
MD Anderson Cancer Center.
As a designated research facility Arnold Palmer Medical
Center was awarded $50,000 from the T.J. Martell
Foundation in April 2011. The grant will help the
hospital continue performing research and developing
innovative cancer treatments and protocols. We are proud
to be recognized by the T.J. Martell Foundation for the
groundbreaking work occurring each day at Arnold Palmer
Medical Center.

The Chatlos family has held a long tradition of
generous philanthropic leadership at Orlando
Health. Over the years, their significant gifts
to our organization have helped provide lifesaving care in many areas including the Level
One Trauma Center at Orlando Regional
Medical Center, MD Anderson Cancer Center
Orlando and Arnold Palmer Hospital.
Earlier this year, when the conversation turned
to our urgent need to expand capacity within
the Alexander Center for Neonatology at
Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies,
the response from our friends was swift. The
Chatlos Foundation pledged a gift of $100,000
to support enhancements to the delivery of
care for our tiniest patients.

Runway to Hope Pledges $1 Million
to Arnold Palmer Hospital
Funds Will Help Pediatric Brain Tumor Program
Expand Research, Education and Technology
Created in 2011 by founders Mark and Josie NeJame, the
non-profit Runway To Hope is already making an impact
on the Central Florida community. Thanks to the success
of its annual fundraising events and the support base it has
developed, Runway To Hope pledged $1 million over seven
years to the Pediatric Brain Tumor Program at Arnold
Palmer Hospital.

CONNECTED TO A GOOD CAUSE.
Runway To Hope’s mission is to serve and provide direct
support to the children and families in the Central Florida
community who have been impacted by pediatric cancer.
The organization’s annual Spring Fashion Soiree is a starstudded event, featuring approximately 30 children, ages two
to 18, who either are battling or have overcome cancer. The
children walk the runway arm-in-arm with one of the dozens
of national and local celebrity escorts.
The event has focused much attention on kids dealing
with cancer, and has also garnered several muchdeserved awards, including Best Charity Event from
Orlando Business Journal, and the Award for Excellence
in Fundraising by a Nonprofit Organization from the
Association of Fundraising Professionals.
But the Runway To Hope team says the biggest reward will
be watching the impact their $1 million gift will make on
the patients of Arnold Palmer Hospital, as the Pediatric
Brain Tumor Program continues to grow.
“Runway To Hope’s commitment and contribution to
Arnold Palmer Hospital will have a tangible effect on
countless children and families in Central Florida,” says

The Give Hope Foundation, which
has been a great partner of Arnold
Palmer Hospital since its inception
in 2005, has recently pledged
$30,000 to our Center for Children’s
Cancer and Blood Disorders.
The volunteer organization
provides support in a variety of
ways to children and families
in Central Florida who are
battling childhood cancer. In
addition to their pledge to Arnold
Palmer Hospital, the Give Hope
Foundation also operates the Give
Hope Hero Program to help grant
a wish or, more often, much needed
basic assistance to these families.
“We, unfortunately, all know
someone who has had cancer,” says
Pete Piacenti, president, Give Hope
Foundation. “It is a horrible disease
when it strikes at any age, but
somehow, when it affects a child,
it seems even worse, and you feel
even more helpless. The Give Hope
Foundation was created to try and
make a difference in the lives of the
families battling cancer – meeting
them at their time of greatest need.”

The “My Healing Harmony” Music
Therapy Program at Arnold Palmer
Hospital was founded in 2010
through a generous grant from
Joey Fatone and the Fatone Family
Foundation. Music therapy can
reduce nausea, pain and anxiety
and give emotional support to
children during their procedures.
Led by a credentialed music
therapist, children can take part
in expressive group or individual
activities such as songwriting,
playing instruments and
performing – and even record
their own songs and produce
music videos in the music studio. No musical skills or experience
are necessary to participate, and
patients of all ages can benefit.

Music Charity Donates
$30,000 to Pediatric
Brain Tumor Program
Rock By The Sea, an organization that raises money
through music events and concerts, recently donated
$30,000 from their annual music festival in Panama City
Beach, Florida, to support the Brain Tumor Program at
Arnold Palmer Hospital.
Rock By The Sea president, Beth Gosnell, and her team are
passionate about music, and they are using it to support Dr.
Amy Smith and her new neuro-oncology team,” says Jeff
Muddell, Foundation vice president. “Their gift will help
our program offer the highest level of care to patients and
families across Florida who are in need of our services.”
The next Rock By The Sea festival, scheduled for April
26-29 in Panama City Beach, will also benefit Arnold
Palmer Hospital. The event will feature dozens of acts
including major recording artists NEEDTOBREATHE
and Shawn Mullins.

Festival Raises
$15,000 for Music
Therapy Program
The healing power of music comes to life daily with the
“My Healing Harmony” Music Therapy Program at Arnold
Palmer Hospital. And recently, some of the biggest names in
music helped the program while rocking Orlando.
In addition, when the auction announcement was made,
Melvin Benn, CEO and founder of the company which
produced Orlando Calling, also made a $10,000 donation
to the Music Therapy Program.
Orlando Calling, a weekend-long music festival, featured
headliners The Killers, Bob Seger and Kid Rock. Those
headliners signed four Gibson Les Paul guitars as part of
a worldwide auction that benefited the Music Therapy
Program. The four guitars raised $5,000.
“Music has always affected the human spirit in powerful
ways. And, watching its positive healing power on these
children fighting cancer is truly a remarkable experience,”
says Melvin Benn.

Institute at Arnold Palmer
Hospital.
For the twelfth year, Golf Channel
anchor, Rich Lerner, and his wife, Robin,
hosted over 100 participants, including
some of the biggest names in golf, for
The December Classic Charity Pro-Am. For the second year, the event benefited
the Alexander Center for Neonatology
at Winnie Palmer Hospital, raising more
than $70,000. Larry the Cable Guy, aka Dan
Whitney, and his wife, Cara,
have a special reason for being
involved. Their son, Wyatt,
was born with hip dysplasia,
which is the number one birth
abnormality in newborns.

Santa’s Magical Arrival and Pictures with Santa at the Mall at
Millenia Benefit Hospital
Santa delivered a big gift this year to Arnold Palmer Hospital. The
Mall at Millenia selected Arnold Palmer Hospital as the beneficiary
of their two major holiday events: Santa’s Magical Arrival and
pictures with Santa. The two events together raised over $7,500.
On Friday, November 11, families joined together at the mall to
kick off the holiday season and welcome Santa as he arrived on the
rooftop. A donation of $10 per family of four was requested to enter
the extraordinary outdoor winter scene, complete with food, music,
dancing and entertainment by stilt walkers, magicians, Mrs. Claus
and other characters from the Mall’s “Hollyville” Christmas Village.
Additionally, throughout the entire holiday season, guests were
encouraged to make voluntary contributions to Arnold Palmer
Hospital during their child’s photo session with Santa.
Santa also made a special stop at Arnold Palmer Hospital to bring
holiday cheer to children who were unable to join the fun at the mall.

Sunshine Region has coordinated
an annual golf tournament to give
back to the community. Each year,
the dollars raised have benefited
programs at Arnold Palmer Hospital
that are critical to caring for the
specialized needs of pediatric
patients. At the 16th Annual CMAA
Charity Golf Tournament, held
at Orlando’s most revered golf
destination, Arnold Palmer’s Bay
Hill Club & Lodge, CMAA raised
another $30,000, elevating the total
giving in the event’s history to more
than $321,000.
“We couldn’t be more proud to be
the host venue this year for such an
important event,” says Ray Easler,
general manager, Bay Hill Club &
Lodge. “It is our privilege to serve
the community and Arnold Palmer
Hospital. Knowing the role this
plays in improving the lives of these
special children and their families
cannot be put into words.”
The proceeds from this year’s
tournament benefit the Hewell
Kids’ Kidney Center at Arnold
Palmer Hospital, which cares for
children suffering from chronic
kidney disease.
“The support we receive from the
CMAA tournament is instrumental
in offering the highest level of care to
the children and families we treat,”
says Jorge Ramirez, MD, director,
Pediatric Nephrology at Arnold
Palmer Hospital.
In 2011, Arnold Palmer Hospital
received more than 7,000 inpatient
and outpatient visits from children
seeking treatment for some form of
kidney disease.
Success of the event is due in large
part to the efforts of major sponsor,

CMAA members and volunteers
from the UCF Rosen School of
Hospitality CMAA Student Chapter.

Panera Bread’s Pink Ribbon Bagels have proven once again they
are a big hit in Central Florida and are making a difference
for MD Anderson – Orlando and cancer patients. The 2011
Pink Ribbon Bagel campaign sold more than 52,000 bagels in
October raising over $30,000. During the past seven years, the
Pink Ribbon Bagel campaign has raised $170,256 to support
cancer services at MD Anderson – Orlando.

Local Male Celebrities Wear Pink and Raise $12,252 for
Breast Cancer Awareness
Local male celebrities hit the runway for Real Men Wear
Pink, a showcase in support of breast cancer awareness and
the latest in men’s fall fashion trends. Presented by Saks Fifth
Avenue at the Florida Mall, funds were raised through ticket
sales, a percentage of store sales and proceeds from Sak’s
commemorative breast cancer tee-shirts.

$510,000 for MD Anderson

Women Playing For T.I.M.E. (Technology, Immediate
diagnosis, Mammography and Education) presented
MD Anderson – Orlando with a check for $510,000
raised from the group’s fundraising events held
throughout 2011. The announcement was made during
WPFT’s 19th anniversary charity golf tournament held at
Lake Nona Golf & Country Club.
Since its inception in 1993, WPFT has raised a total of
$8.6 million to fund breast cancer research and other
cancers affecting women as well as community education

about early detection, appropriate screenings and healthy
lifestyles and prevention. During the luncheon, guests began making spontaneous
gift announcements, raising an additional $60,000 in
unexpected philanthropic support. Says Cheryl Collins,
Foundation vice president, “It was a complete surprise
and an incredibly dramatic conclusion to an outstanding
year with WPFT!”
Throughout Pink October, numerous and diverse events
were held throughout the community to raise awareness
and support for women affected by cancer. Following are
highlights of a few of those events.

expo. Over 25 physician offices and

Health Expo to raise awareness of
breast cancer. A total of 363 runners
participated in the run, which raised
a total of $ 7,295.

Leaving a Legacy
C. Carlisle and Margaret Tippit lived lives focused on
serving their community - a legacy that will long survive
both of them. Even after losing her husband in 2003,
Margaret continued her involvement with several charities
throughout the country until she passed late last year.
Known by family and friends as Tip and Margie, they
were beloved parents, grandparents and philanthropists.
Tip and Margie traveled the world, touring 190 countries
together. They were blessed with five children and 21
grandchildren.
In addition, they were strong supporters of Arnold
Palmer Hospital, giving through a variety of planned gifts
including charitable trusts and life insurance to create a
philanthropic legacy that will continue for many years.

Casino Night Raises $10,000 to Purchase New Technology
for Women’s Imaging Center
The Women’s Advisory Council was established by the Orlando
Health Foundation to promote advocacy and funding initiatives
in support of quality healthcare programs and services at South
Seminole Hospital. Comprised of volunteers, this leadership
group shares time and expertise to help evaluate programs;
identify new opportunities and initiatives; advocate for and
promote wellness and community outreach programs; and
build a culture of philanthropy to ultimately benefit and ensure
availability of quality healthcare services for those we serve.
Recently, the Women’s Advisory Council hosted a Casino Night
at the Sanford Zoo. A total of $10,000 was raised, enabling the
purchase of a new neoprobe for the Women’s Imaging Center at
South Seminole Hospital.

An Orlando Health Lifestyle Medicine Initiative
Spring is a time of renewal and refreshment. It’s in that light that I share the following: I
recently found myself smack dab in the middle of a major health crisis. I didn’t get there by
chance. It was not a random “happening.” Approximately four years ago, my brother was
diagnosed with a genetic heart condition. Rather than writing it off as “his problem,” I was
proactive with my own health and proceeded to be tested for the condition. I was relieved to
learn that I did not have the same condition but was surprised to learn I had “an issue” of my
own. Mine was one that is typically only discovered post-mortem… Wow! How lucky was I to
have found it early! I have since made a full-recovery and am stronger than ever…but that is
because I was proactive in making decisions to improve my health.
