All Of Me
LovingAll Of You
By Kathleen Swift • Photos by Artistic Expressions
Ashley
had saved the white lace handkerchief for 15
years. Her grandmother gave it to Ashley when she was
a teenager and told her to keep it for her wedding. So
when Ashley married Caleb on August 2, 2014, the white
lace handkerchief wrapped the stem of the bouquet she
carried as she walked down the rose petal-strewn path.
Tucked in among the roses of the bouquet were brooches
from Ashley’s mother, her great-aunt and both of her
grandmothers, adding to the vintage elegance Ashley
and Caleb wanted for their wedding day.
The romantic, Art Deco wedding was held at the Crescent Hotel in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. “We
wanted a Gatsby-style wedding,” said Ashley, “and the hotel was the perfect site.” The couple was
married outdoors in front of the fountain with the vintage hotel and the rolling hills as their backdrop.
Ashley’s gown was stunning with its elaborate beaded shoulder strap that continued down the back,
ending in a bow at her waist. “As she came down the aisle, I thought she was gorgeous,” said Caleb.
“I was amazed.”
The couple’s two-year-old twin sons were a part of the wedding, too.
“The boys carried signs as they came down the aisle. One said, ‘Here Comes Your Bride,’ and another
said, ‘Daddy, have you seen the rings?’ But one of the boys had become fascinated with my mom’s
black clutch purse and insisted on carrying that down the aisle. They were so excited to be a part of
the ceremony,” said Ashley.
During the wedding ceremony the couple each poured a bottle of sand into a monogramed glassfronted box as a symbol of joining their lives together.
“Each of the boys had a little bottle of sand, too,” said Ashley, “and we felt that we really became
a family.”
Ashley had surprised Caleb by arriving at the ceremony accompanied by her father in a horse-drawn
carriage. “It was magical for me. Getting in the carriage with my dad and driving to the ceremony,
being dropped off and walking up the aisle,” said Ashley.
Caleb responded, “It was a complete surprise for me. I didn’t know anything about the carriage until
she arrived.” The magic continued after the ceremony when the newly married couple left the venue in
the carriage for a short ride. “It was wonderful to just have a few minutes alone after the ceremony,”
said Caleb. “It was quiet and just us together.”
When Caleb and Ashley returned to the Crescent Hotel, they made a grand entrance into the ballroom
to celebrate with family and friends. The Art Deco-designed cake complete with flourishes of pearls
and feathers complemented the Gatsby theme. In a delightful coincidence, Caleb’s friend caught the
garter, and his friend’s girlfriend caught the bouquet. To top the evening, Caleb and Ashley danced
their first dance to one of their favorite songs, “All of Me,” by John Legend. “It was the perfect song,
and it is how we are,” said Ashely.
Life for the couple now revolves around a busy family life. “We are more of a unit since our wedding,”
said Ashley. “We are role models for our boys, and we are a united front providing stability for the kids.
It is different being married. We are so happy.”
Both Caleb and Ashley agree that their wedding was elegant and meaningful in many ways, and they
will cherish the memories of that day in their family for years to come.
“As she came down
the aisle, I thought
she was gorgeous.”

Love
in the Stars
By Kathleen Swift • Photos by Tracy Owen
It was in the stars for Chris and Brandi
Spurling to be married. In fact, it was under
the stars that Chris proposed. “We met years
ago in junior high, and we were good friends
all through high school,” said Brandi. “But we
didn’t date until we had both graduated.”
For their first date, Chris took Brandi stargazing. “I knew then that when I proposed
to Brandi it would be under the stars.”
When he did propose five years later, he took Brandi back to that same spot where
they lay looking at the stars. “The problem was that I couldn’t figure out a way to
get the ring out of my pocket while lying down,” remembered Chris. “So I suggested
that we get up and move to another spot to get a better view. That let me get the ring
out of my pocket.” Brandi got up, grabbed the corner of the blanket, and when she
turned around Chris was on his knee and asked her to be his wife.
It was a perfect scene. But Brandi said she had just gotten off of work and had
changed into grubby clothes, not knowing that the stars were about to align to bring
their lives together forever. “I was surprised, and if I had known he was going to
propose, I would have dressed differently,” she said with a laugh.
Chris and Brandi were married at Timbered-in Catering in Grove, Oklahoma. Chris
worked for the owners, Shane and Kim Berry, so the couple knew the venue well.
“The first time I saw Timbered-in, Chris was housesitting, and I knew it was the
place I wanted to get married,” said Brandi. The homey feel of the cottage in
the woods and the serenity of the setting appealed to the couple who wanted
a storybook wedding.
To create the vintage look, the couple looked to the recent past. “I’ve loved
Lucille Ball since high school, so we decided to have a 1950s-influenced
wedding,” said Brandi. Her vintage dress was handed down with love
through the family from her aunt Shannon Watson’s mother-in-law, who
first wore the dress when she was married in 1956. Shannon also wore the
dress, which had a dropped waist, for her wedding. To make the dress fit
her style, Brandi and her great aunt reworked the dress to raise the waist. The
addition of a big petticoat completed the vintage look.
“I knew then that
when I proposed to
Brandi it would be
under the stars.”
--Chris Spurling, groom
“We wanted a small, intimate wedding,” said Brandi, “and Shane and Kim at
Timbered-in Catering helped us have that.”
Everything about the reception suggested vintage, from the flowers to the mismatched
antique china to the simple rough-iced cake. “The reception was amazing in both the
setting and in the catering, and without Timbered-in, we could not have had such a
beautiful wedding.”
When Brandi looks back on that day, she remembers how moved she was by the
words shared by their friends at the reception. “Hearing how they felt about us and
our wedding made me extremely happy.”
For Chris, the most touching part of the wedding was that the minister officiating
at the ceremony was a close friend. “He got ordained so he could marry us,” said
Chris. “It meant a lot to have him be the one to marry us.”
As the celebration ended and the last dance was danced, the light faded, ending a
beautiful day just as their love had begun, under the stars.
