THE CONSECRATED LIFE
There are many paths to the spiritual life. While
the Mass is the source and summit of our relationship with
God, our personal prayer life can be exercised in many
forms.
A few summers back the parish held a series of
talks on the “Six Ways to Pray.” We talked about the
prayer forms developed from the spirituality of Saints
Francis of Assisi, Clare, Ignatius of Loyola, Therese of
Lisieux, Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross. Each has
a style of approaching God that is distinctive. For example, Ignatian spirituality uses the head to image biblical
passages in order to sense the presence of God, whereas
Franciscan spirituality uses nature and the heart to “feel”
God’s nearness.
Women and men who dedicate their lives to God
and the ministry of the Church can take on various forms
as well. Men can become priests or religious brothers.
They can live in community or as individuals as most
parish priests do. Women for the most part live in groups
or community.
Women also have the option to consecrate their
lives to Christ but live by themselves. This is called “The
Order of Consecrated Virgins”. The custom of consecrating women to a life of virginity flourished even in the early
Church. It led to the formation of a solemn rite constituting the candidate as a sacred person, a “surpassing sign
of the Church’s love for Christ.” (Rite of Consecration).
She is a faithful reminder of the life which is to be ours in
the Heavenly Reign of God, which is a life belonging
completely to Christ. This form of life of the virgin living
in the world is a most intimate union with Christ, which is
reflected in the ancient title given to the consecrated
virgin, “bride of Christ.”
She offers the gift of her physical virginity to
Christ, as a sign of the dedication of her entire being to
Him. Through a Rite of Consecration, the Church receives
the gift of the virgin and calls down upon her the grace of
the Holy Spirit that she may never fail in her resolve to live
in perfect continence for the sake of Christ and His
Church.
There is a ceremony that went out of use for many
years that has been resurrected by the Second Vatican
Council. In May of 1970 the “Rite of Consecrating Virgins”
was reinstated in the rituals of the Church. While not a
Sacrament, it is called a “Sacramental”, that is, it is a rich
source of grace not instituted by Christ. Rosaries, statues
& medals are examples of these. A “Rite” is a solemn
ceremony exercised by the Church.
Our Lady of Hope Parish - 506
Women who are widowed or whose marriage was
annulled are not eligible. The criteria states: never been
married or lived in public violation of chastity; by their
age, prudence and universally approved character they
give assurance of perseverance in a life of chastity and
dedicated to the service of the Church; that they be consecrated only by a Bishop in an approved rite.
The Church accepts no responsibility for the
virgin’s well being, that is, she remains in the secular
state, providing completely for her own material needs,
medical care and retirement.
She receives from the Bishop a ring signifying
that she is a “Bride of Christ”. While a veil is given to her
during the ceremony, it is not to be worn in public as
vowed religious women may do. She also receives a book
of prayers that she vows to recite each day for the good of
the Church.
She promises to wear the ring, dress modestly
and live a simple lifestyle befitting of one dedicated to
God’s ministry in the world. She involves herself in the
work of the Church as much as she can.
AN INVITATION
Why all this information about consecrated
virgins? AnnaMae Muryasz was a parishioner of Our Lady
of Hope for many years. She helped in many facets of the
parish life, namely Religious Education and the Evangelization Committee among other things. She went to Wildwood, NJ to take on the role of Religious Education Direction in the parish there.
AnnaMae has decided after much prayer and discernment to enter the life of a Consecrated Virgin. She will
be received by Bishop Sullivan at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Camden on Wednesday January
21 at the 12:05 Mass.
AnnaMae has graciously invited those who
remember her and others to witness this ceremony. I and
the priests of the parish will be attending. If you need
directions or more information, contact one of the priests
or the parish office.

The Baptism of Jesus
JESUS WAS BAPTIZED BY JOHN IN THE JORDAN. AS HE CAME UP OUT OF THE WATER, THE
HEAVENS OPENED AND THE SPIRIT DESCENDED
LIKE A DOVE ON HIM. AND A VOICE CAME FROM
HEAVEN, “YOUR ARE MY SON THE BELOVED;
WITH YOU I AM WELL PLEASED.” MARK 1:9-11
