By Gordy Peterson Thanks again to all and may God Bless, Gordy Peterson soon to be a Jr. Past Potentate This will be my last article as your potentate. By now most of you know we lost our Brother and good friend, Past Potentate Jimmy Hobaugh. We had a wonderful turnout of Nobles and their ladies from Ahmed for his visitation, masonic and military services on Saturday December 13. Our thoughts, love and prayers go out to Virginia and her family. We will miss his smile, kind words and dedication to our kids. Incoming Potentate Message By Doug Wolfe Hope this article finds you all enjoying the Holiday Season. Thank you for your vote of confidence at our recent elections. Your new corps of officers will give their very best effort to make this year one of growth and progress. Planning this upcoming year has focused on I had a long list of things I was going to include in inclusion and recognition of as many clubs and units my last article, but it's not going to happen. I talk way as the year permits. The temple will meet for Spring too much but the one thing I do want to say from the Ceremonial April 11, 2015, at Kingsford in bottom of my heart is a GREAT BIG THANK YOU conjunction with Royal Arch All Degree Day with our to each and everyone. You made my year happen; initiation banquet and dance following their work. your advise, support, and love gave me the strength I The Potentate from Beja plans on coming up from needed to serve and survive as your potentate. In closing, one of my short falls was not being more active with our Shrine clubs and units. There are a lot of work, goals, and understanding that needs to be addressed. We must have faith in each other and try to work and pull together as a team. I made several visits to one of the Shrine clubs to try to resolve some very important issues. My best efforts fell short, in fact very short of what I hoped to have achieved. Enough said. I wish nothing but the best for our members and our newly elected and appointed divan officers. The Sportsman’s raffle appeals to a different group and could really help if we put tickets in the hands of local merchants who draw that crowd. Be aggressive at finding those people and let them help our kids. Onions are a big help and they get the public to see us at work. Get some orders ahead and develop a goal for your unit or club. You will be helping Ahmed, your own units and the transportation fund. Lastly, be busy with your units so that we are visible in the community. I believe that visibility may be the whole key to our success as an institution by fostering increased cooperation within the community and attracting good men to make us stronger. Enough for now… I’ll try to visit each Shrine Club MEMBERSHIP AND RETENTION this year and go to all the circuses. My hope is that we According to statistics and records over the last two will be a closer, happier, and better informed group this year. Some thoughts for today: "He who has health, has hope. And he who has hope has everything." - Benjamin Franklin "You are never too old to set another goal, or to dream a new dream." - C. S. Lewis Greeting, Nobles, from the Southern end of the U.P. I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season as it is the time of year of giving. The Greatest gift of giving was given to us by God of the Universe. I had the pleasure of meeting one of our Shrine children this past week. What a wonderful heart warming experience to see what we all do by being motivated to help those who stand no chance of being helped except by the motivation of people like yourselves, whether it be in raffles, dances or fishing tournaments, they all help these children lead a normal life. You all bring a smile, a step forward physically, one they may have never had the chance to do if it was not for you giving of your time and energy. That motivation of helping those who are not as fortunate as those of us who can get out of bed or walk down the street without the aid of a wheelchair or crutches. I still marvel at the young Shriner girl who by her way of giving back had the motivation of collecting can tops so she could purchases a new wheel chair for other Shrine children to use and now her Dad wants to join to give back what they received. I don’t know about you but that in itself is enough motivation to keep going forward in helping our Temples and transportation fund. May your hearts be blessed with the Spirit of God. I leave you now with these words from the Lost Keys of Freemasonry titled Motive. “What motive leads the Masonic candidate out of the world and up the winding stairway to the light? He alone can truly know, for in his heart is hidden the Page 5 December 4 was another very exciting evening for Gladstone Lodge. The Installation of Officers was conducted that evening. The event started at 6 p.m. with a dinner provided for and was prepared by the outgoing and incoming Worshipful Master and cook, Frank C. Irons. After welcoming MWGM LeVeque was conducted to the East and WM Frank C. Irons had the Past Masters of Gladstone Lodge recognized. Then the widows of Past Masters attending the installation were recognized. MWGM LeVeque conducted the Bible Presentation to our two new Master Masons; Andy Pullin and Kyle Ball. Frank C. Irons was then escorted to the Alter for installation where he knelt and Grand Soloist Doug Wolf sang, "The Lords Prayer". After Frank's oath was acknowledged he was escorted by MWGM Captain of the Guard LeVeque and he installed the rest of Gladstone's By Frank C. Irons Officers. Is he seeking the light of the East? Is he seeking the wisdom eternal? Does he bring his life and offer it upon the alter of the Most High? Of all things motive is most important. Though we fail again and again, if our motive is to be true, we are victorious. Though time after time we succeed, if our motive be unworthy, we have failed. Enter the Temple in reverence, for it is in truth the dwelling place of a Great Spirit, the Spirit of Masonry. Masonry is the ordained of kings. It's hand has shaped the destinies of worlds, and the perfect fruitage of its molding is an honest man. What nobler thing can be accomplished than the illumination of ignorance? What greater task is there than the joyous labor of service? And what nobler man can there be than that Mason who serves his Lights and is himself a light unto his fellow men. Page 6 Jimmie Hobaugh, P.P. (December 23, 1935 - December 4, 2014) Jimmie Harris Hobaugh age 78, of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, passed away after a valiant battle with cancer on Thursday, December 4, 2014 in his home surrounded by loved ones. Jimmie was born on December 23, 1935, in Noble, Oklahoma to Charles and Lottie Hobaugh. He would often remark with tongue in cheek, “I’m just a red dirt farm boy…” He graduated from Noble High School in 1953. After high school he took some classes at the University of Oklahoma where he met his future bride while flipping burgers at the student union. He proposed on their first date, and he married Virginia Mae Smith in May of 1954. He then joined the United States Coast Guard as a Seaman Recruit. He worked his way up through the ranks to Chief Boatswain’s Mate. In 1963 he was a member of the honor guard for President John F. Kennedy’s funeral. He attended Officer’s Candidate School and worked his way upward from Ensign to Captain. He was stationed on shore and on ships on the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, Lake Erie, and Lake Superior in all sea conditions. It was during his time as captain of the Woodrush, a buoy tender based in Duluth, that he made his mark in Lake Superior history. During that fateful storm in November of 1975, he and his crew risked their lives to search of survivors and wreckage of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Later he would return with the Woodrush to survey the underwater wreckage. He was often called for interviews and speaking engagements about his experiences with the Fitzgerald. He retired from the Coast Guard after 37 years of service in 1991, and he and Virginia chose to stay in Sault Ste. Marie rather than move back to Oklahoma because they loved the area and the people. He worked as executive director for Le Sault de Ste. Marie Historic Sites for several years. Jimmie also found purpose in serving others through many community groups. He was a member of Bethel Lodge #358 F. & A.M., a Royal Arch Mason, a Knights Templar, a member of the St. Bonaventure Conclave of the Red Cross of Constantine, the Upper Michigan York Rite College #40, and the Michigan College Societas Rosicruciana. He earned the special rank of 33rd Degree Mason. In addition, he was a member of the Scottish Rite, past Potentate of Ahmed Temple in Marquette, a member of the Hillbillies and the Jesters, and a past president of the Sault Shrine Club, currently the treasurer. He was the treasurer for the Queen of the North Chapter #8 Order of the Eastern Star. He was also the past president of the Rotary Club of Sault Ste. Marie, past Trustee of the Elks, member of the Hiawathaland Law Enforcement Officers Association, the Soo Pilots Association, and served on the Sault Ste. Marie Airport Board stemming from his past as a private pilot. Jimmie was honored to give back to this community and its people. Jimmie loved his ever-growing family. Though Page 7 (Continued on page 8) (Continued from page 7) scattered throughout the country and beyond its borders, he proudly bragged about each of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He had a way of making all of them feel like they were his favorite and somehow they all were. He also had an extended “family” of people he met, befriended and encouraged wherever he went. He was fond of distributing small laminated cards with a copy of “Desiderata” on one side and “The Man in the Glass” on the other side. He inspired many with his integrity, his tenacity, his sharp, quick wit and his encouraging pep talks. He lived his whole life as an example to prove what he often told others, “Follow your dreams and never give up.” Jimmie is survived by his wife of 60 years, Virginia Mae (Smith) Hobaugh; his daughters, Terri (Marty) Wolski of Sault Ste. Marie, Charlotte Gentry (fiancé Kevin Brosemer) of Tennessee, Kathy (Mike) Capron of Maryland; his son, Charlie (Cori) Hobaugh of Texas; 15 grandchildren, Mandy Browning, Beth (Mike) Mugavero, Anna (Vincent) Vlaminck, Emily (Nick) Partaka, Tessa Browning, Nathan (Megan) Gentry, Ben Gentry, Jake Gentry, Philip Gentry, Alison Capron, Ryan Capron, Nick (Catherine Lanae) Hobaugh, Stephanie (Matt) Hill, Rachel Hobaugh, Dustin Hobaugh; and 3 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Ervin Hobaugh; his mother, Lottie Mae (Harris) Hobaugh; his brother, Billy Ray Hobaugh; and his sister, Dolores Jean (Hobaugh) Butler. Jimmie would have also liked to express heartfelt appreciation to the doctors and nurses who cared for him in his last months of life, as well as to his many friends and wellwishers. He truly had a very full, well-led life. An open house gathering was held from 1:00-3:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 13, 2014, at C.S. Mulder Funeral Home. Immediately following the gathering a memorial service was held with the Masons officiating. Condolences were left online at www.csmulder.com. Page 12 East West Shrine Game Football is a great sport; it teaches teamwork, discipline and perseverance in reaching goals. It's exciting to watch and fun to play. As the longest running college all-star game in the nation, the East-West Shrine Game has been woven into America's football tradition for 90 years. Shriners created the East-West Shrine Game in 1925, driven to help children and families in need. They dedicated the game to raising awareness and support for Shriners Hospitals for Children. Today there are 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children locations; back in 1925 there just were nine. As the game grew, legendary coaches like Don Shula, Dick Vermeil, Paul "Bear" Bryant, and Jerry Glanville joined renowned players like Gale Sayers, Tom Brady, John Elway, Alan Page, Dick Butkus, Brett Favre, Gino Marchetti and Walter Payton in supporting the East-West Shrine Game. The game is an important opportunity for the nation's top college players, giving them the chance to display their talents to a national television audience and over 300 NFL scouts. As part of the game week tradition, teams visit Shiners Hospitals for Children - Tampa. The true meaning of the game hits home when the players and coaches spend time with the kids, experiencing their courage and determination. All will tell you, time spent with the kids is both humbling and inspirational. January 17, 2015 marks the 90th game in this special tradition. This is your chance to see tomorrow's legends in the making and support a very important cause. History Some of football's greatest legends have played and coached for the East-West Shrine Game. Since 1925, the game has brought the nation's top college football players together from the East and West sides of the United States to compete in a thrilling all-star game played to benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children. Make no mistake, after 90 years of play the East-West Shrine Game has become a serious part of America's football tradition. This year, going into training camp, over 100 players from the 89th East-West Shrine Game signed with NFL teams. Any given season there are about 265 East-West alumni on NFL rosters. More than 70 alumni have been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, having showcased their talents on the East-West gridiron before launching their professional careers. The East-West Shrine Game has come a long way from its humble beginnings in San Francisco, originally a baseball game played between the local Shriners and Elks. These two fraternities had played a charity baseball game for years, with all of the proceeds donated to Shriners Hospitals for Children. The idea of expanding the game into a larger event blossomed and, in 1925, Capt. E.J. "Jack" Spaulding proposed that the Shriners host the first all-star football game in the nation. The best players from the East would compete against the top players in the West in an exciting and unusual match-up of great football talent. Noble Sam Goodman agreed and proposed that all proceeds from the game benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children. An unparalleled football tradition was born. The very first East-West Shrine Game was played on December 26, 1925 at San Francisco's Ewing Field before an audience of 25,000 fans - the largest crowd in the ballpark's history. The game profited $25,000 which was donated to Shriners Hospital for Children - San Francisco. Page 13 2014 Ahmedian Paper Supporters Help fill this page !
