St. John the Baptist Catholic Church 313 East Second Street Jordan, Minnesota 55352 Phone: (952) 492-2640, Fax: (952) 492-5683 www.sjbjordan.org January 11, 2015 Mission Statement St. John’s Parish family prayerfully worships, studies, teaches and lives our faith in Jesus Christ. A Note from Father Yanta This Sunday we not only reflect on the Baptism of our Lord, but the gift of our union with His Paschal Mystery in and through our own baptism. I ask you to please bring this to prayer this week as we reflect on the meaning of this, and the gift of becoming Children of God. What does this mean for you to bring this into your own public life, as Jesus did? Oh God, my Father, give me the grace to be generous, to receive, and to experience your overwhelming love for me, your beloved son/daughter in Jesus Christ. Amen Also, we will celebrate as a parish the continual achievement of many significant goals of our Stewardship Drive. Two of those goals: 1) over 50 percent of our parish has participated in our Stewardship drive and 2) we have well passed our first goal, our “Celebration Goal” of 1.7 million dollars. In fact, we are almost at our “Victory Goal” of 2.2 million, with the 1.86 million dollars in pledges we have committed. I want to give a big thank you for all the work, labor and love that has helped us and continues to help us be so successful in our stewardship drive. First, of all we thank God for the great outpouring of grace that continues throughout our endeavors….it has helped us to be generous, to receive, and to experience living as beloved sons and daughters in Christ. Second, for all the parish staff that has had much more extra work and orchestration that is needed for all this to be successful. Third, for our Stewardship Campaign leaders, Rodney & Denise Andersen, John Breunig, Matt & Mary Eckman, Francis Schatz, Marc & Genell Hollahan, Terry & Lanny Holzer, Marty & Lori Huss, Joe & Michelle Lopez, Ken & Sue Malz, Allen & Sharon Menke, DJ & Jen Noyes, John & Rebecca Ringsmuth, Miguel Salinas, Ken & Susan Warras, and Mark & Sue Zimitsch, for saying “yes” and making a true commitment of love for the benefit of all the parish. Fourth, for David Ortman, from the Steier Group, for his direction and leadership. We all know that we would never have been able to achieve this continual success without his leadership and direction. Fifth, for the Strengthening Our Parish Committee formed by the Archdiocese that financed most of the costs of running the Stewardship Drive. And finally, of course to all of you, who bring such great hope with the love you show with your sacrificial giving. May God bless all this for many generation to come, Fr. Yanta Thank you for the donations received to the St. John’s Building Fund in memory of Bernice Kuechle, Vangie Wolf, Evelyn Seifert and the estate of Jeanette Bischoff. Welcome to St. John’s We would like to welcome all those visiting with us today. Open Hours: Friday 3:00am Saturday 7:00am (winter sub needed) If you would like an open hour, please call Sue Pieper at 952.492.3340 or Wendy Niemeyer at 952.807.8664. Please pray for Bernice Kuechle and her family. Bernice’s Mass of Christian Burial was here on December 22, 2014. Please pray for Evelyn Seifert and her family. Evelyn’s Mass of Christian Burial was here on December 27, 2014. Today we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord. The U.S. bishops pastoral on stewardship reminds us that Baptism gives all of His disciples a share in His priestly work and calls them “to offer up the world and all that is in it—especially themselves—to the Lord of all.” The Baptism of the Lord Thank You! We would like to thank everyone who helped comfort us at the time of our mothers passing. A special thank you to Father Yanta, the Mass servers, choir, organist and soloist. Thank you to all who brought food and for the ladies who served the lunch. Your kindness will always be remembered. The Family of Evelyn Seifert January 22nd MCCL March for Life On Thursday, January 22, join thousands of Minnesotans at the State Capitol in St Paul at 12:00 noon for the 41st Annual MCCL March for Life. The March commemorates the deaths of more than 57 million unborn babies killed by abortion since the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court's decisions legalizing abortion on demand for all nine months of pregnancy. Your presence will help show elected officials and the public the depth of support for pro-life legislation protecting women and unborn babies. For more information, visit www.mccl.org. Jordan Council of Catholic Women All women are invited to attend the JCCW Meeting on January 20th at 7:00pm in Louis Hall. A Note from Joe Zabinski Greetings Parishioners of St. John’s from the Holy Land! As a part of the seminary, my third year class and I have traveled to the Holy Land! All of us and all the luggage made it safely across the pond. Now, while I could write about all the amazing sites and insights that I have learned from our guides, I will speak about a few of the ones that stick out to me personally. The first site that sticks out to me is going to Caesarea. It was there that the first gentile became a Christian, without which none of us would be a part of the Church! Up until Peter came and baptized Cornelius, the only Christians were Jews who believed in Jesus being the Savior, but with Cornelius this all changed. In Acts 10, it mentions that Cornelius and the others there had received the Holy Spirit after Peter preached the Good News to them and the people there started speaking in tongues and praising God. Up until that point, the Christian religion had only been passed on through familial blood as the Jewish religion does, but with this event the first Pope, St. Peter, realized that all people should be able to become Christian through the blood of Christ! The second site is the town of Nazareth at the Church of the Annunciation and the Church of St. Joseph. We had the privilege to celebrate Mass at the Church of St. Joseph this past Sunday. That was a blessing to be there, because with my having a great devotion to St. Joseph, I got to see the place where He had his carpentry shop and where Jesus learned and saw his Foster Father work! There I offered the Mass for all of you who work with your hands as well as more generally for all of you at the Church of St. John’s. Then just down the hill from St. Joseph’s Church, is the site where the Angel appeared to Mary at the Annunciation at the Church of the Annunciation. That day I got to pray my Holy Hour there and was blessed to meditate on the Annunciation scene in Luke’s Gospel (Lk. 1:26-38). What struck me was that at the altar, there is a latin phrase which translates into “And the Word was made flesh here.” It doesn’t just say as we say in the Angelus “and the Word was made flesh” (Jn. 1:14), but it adds the word ‘here’ showing the significance of the place- that the Word was made flesh right at the spot where I was praying! This was truly an awe filled time being there at that Church. Please continue to pray for all of us here and I will continue to pray for you all. Stay tuned for what happens next time on Joe’s amazing journey. God Bless You! This year's conference will be held July 10th-12th at the Rochester Mayo Civic Center. Our event will begin Thursday, July 9th with an overnight and tubing adventure. What is a Steubenville conference? A Steubenville Youth Conference is primarily an invitation to spiritual growth. The conference is about hearing dynamic speakers instruct and challenge teens in: prayer, chastity, service, and the power of the sacraments. You will discover that Christianity is not for the weak and timid; it is not a crutch; and it is not boring! It is about meeting hundreds of people on fire for the Lord: laughing, crying, talking, singing, praying, dancing and being encouraged to take a stand for Christ.
