from St. Catharine Church to the internet,

3D printing capacity in St. Catharine School.
This Science, Technology, Engineering and
Math lab will benefit students from Pre K
through 8th Grade, and contribute to the goal
of making St. Catharine the pre-eminent

Now that we are striding resolutely into the New
Year, and Christmas is a distant past, I want to take
the opportunity of thanking so many parishioners
(from both here and Florida) for responding
generously to our request for help with three special
projects for the parish and school. We have already
contracted with a company to install 24 hour
streaming video from St. Catharine Church and this
should be in place before long. We are moving ahead
resolutely with the STEM lab project at St.
Catharine School, and have been visited by some
robots who talked to us and sold us on their expertise
and their value as an educational tool. We are
exploring 3D printing, and a member of the parish
has offered his expertise in this area. It is not too
late, if you would like to help with any of these
projects. We intend to have the Prekindergarten
classroom ready for Catholic Schools Week at the
end of January, and will be open for business by
September.

I heard this joke recently
a pious soul goes to
heaven and comes fact to face with the Mother of
God. ‘Why’, he asks with all her blessings, she so
often appears in paintings as a bit sad and wistful; ‘Is
everything OK?’ ‘Well,’ she answers; ‘everything
is great. It’s just that…well, actually, we had
always hoped for a daughter”.
I heard the joke from a woman who believed that
women should have a more official, decision making
role in the church. She made the case that in the
early church, in the first century especially; women
played a much different role in the church than today.
In fact, Pope Francis has been reminding us in recent
times that Jesus himself focused more on ordinary
men and women and on the needy and the poor rather
than dogma, and went out of his way to engage
women and treat them with great respect. St. Paul in
Romans 16 refers to a woman called Junia as
prominent among the apostles, and to a woman called
Phoebe who served as a deacon in the church.
As I read Pope Francis’ description of the church that
he would like to see, in his Apostolic Exhortation
“Evangelii Gaudium”, I am reminded that there are
actually two – sometimes distinct, churches. One is
the rigid, all male church of the Vatican hierarchy
that often seems out of touch and obsessed with
dogma and rules and regulations - and before Pope
Francis came along, out of touch with issues of social
justice.
And then there is the grass roots church that is often
ignored by the media and gets little credit for the
difference that it makes in the world. This is the
church of the sisters and priests, brothers and lay men
and women who toil on the front line educating,
supporting, healing and advocating for the common
person, and for the forgotten and the destitute in the
inner cities and in the depths of Africa and Central
America.
I know, for me, when I read about the scandals in the
church that always make the headlines, I remember
that other Catholic church. The sick and the
wounded, the lepers and the forgotten AIDS orphans
in Swaziland or India or the slum dwellers in San

Paolo or Calcutta, may never in their lives see a
cardinal or a bishop, but every day they come face to
face with the church in the person of women and men
who are content to spend their lives trying to make a
difference in places where no reporter or
photographer ever ventures to see, and where they
put their very lives on the line each day that they rise
in the morning. .
It is encouraging to see that in the person of Pope
Francis, the “official” church is at last taking
inspiration from this side of the church – from the
men and women whose magnificence comes not from
their vestments, their gold crosses and their authority
but from their humility and their selflessness. That
surely must make the Mother of God smile.

Communion Under Both Kinds
Following the advice and counsel of health
conscious parishioners, we will not begin offering
the Communion Cup until after the flu season is
over. This will also give us time to invite
additional extraordinary ministers OF
Communion to help us in this ministry.
VOCATION PRAYER:
Dear God, bless our family life and nurture us with
your love and care. Help us to be attentive to the
needs of one another. Guide us to reach beyond our
home in service to others. We ask you to open the
hearts of our children to hear your voice, to know
their true vocation, and to find true happiness in you.

Bishop David M. O'Connell, C.M., underwent surgery,
Dec. 29, in a Trenton area hospital to remove his left
foot, ankle and part of his lower left leg reaching
halfway between the knee and the ankle. The surgery
was needed to address several serious infections
brought about by complications with his diabetes.

Bishop O'Connell's surgery was described as
successful by his surgeons and his recovery is going
well. He will remain in the hospital for a brief period
of observation, and then will be moved to a local
rehabilitation center. He is expected to make a full
recovery, and will be fitted for prosthesis at a time to
be determined by his doctors.

St. Catharine School 2014
Christmas Concert!
SCS held its annual Christmas Concert on Thursday,
December 18th. The 8th grade performed their
version of the Christmas story accompanied by
performances by students in each grade.
We are happy to announce that through a process of
prayer and discernment, 12 members of the pastoral
council were elected on December 13. The three hour
process was directed by Terry Ginther, the Director of
the Diocesan Office of Pastoral Life and Mission. The
members of the council were called from the parish at
large. They do not necessarily represent certain
ministries or groups that already exist in the parish.
They were selected through a process of prayer and
reflection and discernment. The aim of the process was
to call forth those who are able and willing to commit to
the time needed for prayer, study and the work of the
council.

Some characteristics that are of value in a Christian
leader were considered during the process. These
included: a willingness to listen; honesty; enthusiasm
about the future of the parish; a commitment to work
towards consensus; a desire for personal spiritual
growth and the growth of the community; flexibility;
openness to new ideas, etc.
In the coming weeks, an annual calendar of meetings
will be established for the council. The members,
working with the pastor will decide upon when, where,
and how often to meet in order to fulfill its duties. It is
recommended that the council should not meet less than
four times a year, but I would envisage us meeting once
a month formally, with subcommittees meeting more
often.

Sponsors of Families in our Mother
of Mercy Parish in Asbury Park
Ten of our parishioners generously provided gifts of toys and clothes to
ten Mother of Mercy families, both parents and children. These were
very needy families identified by the parish priests and staffs. As the
beautiful wrapped gifts were delivered to the parish center, I had the
good fortune to meet one of the parents who was receiving the gifts. As
you might imagine, she was most grateful and a bit overwhelmed. It
made Christmas more meaningful for me and I hope for the other
families who so generously purchased, wrapped and delivered the gifts.
Christmas is such a busy and joyful time for us all; helping strangers in
need provides a good perspective to this Holy Season. Much thanks to
the families who sponsored the families.
The Center in Asbury Park
Please, if you don’t want to contribute frozen
meals to the Center, remember, we need nonperishable toiletry items as well. The Center
provides "Hygiene Bags" for our clients to assist
them with their basic needs. Many of these
items are things that cannot be gotten with food stamps and yet they are
necessary items. If you can help The Center with these items we would
be most appreciative. The basic needs items are: Shaving Cream,
Deodorant, Hand Lotion, Hypo-Allergenic Body Lotion, Mouth Wash,
Body Soap, Band-Aids, Hair Conditioner, Shampoo, Toothpaste, &
Toilet Paper. Containers for this collection are given out on the 3 rd
week-end of every month. On the 4th weekend frozen meals and the
above mentioned articles are returned and delivered to the Center. For

PARISH INFORMATION
BAPTISMS: Baptisms are usually on the 2nd & 4th Sundays of each month at 1:30 PM.
Baptism Preparation Class must be taken before the Baptism. The next class is Tuesday,
January 6, 2015 at 7:30 PM in the Convent. We urge parents to take the class before
the baby’s birth. Please call 732-449-5765, ext 102 to arrange for Baptisms and the
Preparation Class.
CHILDREN'S LITURGY OF THE WORD: All children, ages 4 and up are
invited to attend the Children's Liturgy of the Word at the 10:00 AM Mass in St.
Margaret's Church. There is no fee or registration required.
MARRIAGES: Those planning marriage should notify the pastor at least one year in
advance. The Church sees marriage in one’s own parish as the most proper arrangement,
therefore, people who reside in St. Catharine - St. Margaret Parish have a right to be
married here. Others should receive the sacrament in their own parishes. The bride, the
groom, or their parents must be registered and living in this Parish for at least one year.
Pre-Cana or Engaged Encounter Weekend is required as is participation in FOCCUS; a
self-diagnostic inventory designed to help couples learn more about themselves and their

Because of great interest in the topic of human
trafficking, the venue for the next meeting has been
changed to accommodate the number expected. The
next meeting is Thursday, Jan 29th @ 7:00PM in
St. Catharine School Cafeteria.
Fr. Padovani will introduce Winifred Dougherty, a
Good Shepherd Sister from Ireland, and Ellen Kelly a
Good Shepherd Sister living in Queens, NY, to
present on the very current and critical issue of
Human Trafficking and what it means for women
and families today. (Cf Bios below)

Winifred Doherty is a Good Shepherd Sister
from Ireland. Winifred has been the NGO
Representative to the United Nations for the
Sisters and Mission Partners since 2008. She
is a social worker by profession graduating
from University College Cork, Ireland. She
worked in Ethiopia for 16 years empowering the girl child and
young women through education and micro finance programs.
She has experience in community mobilization for
infrastructural development - water, sanitation, walkways and
kitchens. She facilitated the girl child and young women to
confront extreme poverty and the many discriminatory
practices that plagued their lives - FGM, early marriage,
kidnapping of girls, gender based violence, sexual exploitation
and trafficking. As NGO representative at the United Nations
she collaborates with other NGO's in efforts for poverty
eradication, ending prostitution and human trafficking, ending
violence against women and girls and the promotion of the girl
child. She is a director of the Working Group on Girls and is
currently a core team member of the NGO Global Coalition for
Social Protection Floors.
Ellen Kelly is a Sister of the Good
Shepherd currently living in Queens, NY.
She has been the New York Province
Leader since 2008. She has her Masters in
Clinical Social Work from Fordham
University. Prior to assuming the role of
Province Leader she was a social worker
for 8 years and then served for 12 years as Executive Director
of Collier Youth Services in Wickatunk (Marlboro), N.J. She
has continued her interest in empowering young women and
men through her involvement in supporting the efforts of her
religious congregation in programs here in the US and in many
countries around the globe. Sisters of the Good Shepherd are
currently in 72 countries with a mission focused on persons
who are trafficked, forced to migrate, oppressed by abject
poverty or marginalized in any way. She also is active in a
coalition of Catholic religious in the NYC area that provide
education on human trafficking, advocacy and supportive
housing and services for victims of human trafficking .

Women's Bible Study
Women’s Bible Study Group is an opportunity for women of
all ages and all levels of Biblical knowledge to gather in

Oppenheimer Funds will speak at our Tuesday, January
27th meeting at St. Margaret Church Hall at 1 p.m.
His topic, "Getting your financial house in order," will
include a worksheet and Q and A on a subject of general
interest to seniors. Coffee, tea, light refreshments and an

And Finally…. Some Catholic Humor
While shopping, two nuns happened to pass by the liquor section. One
sister asked the other if she would like a beer.
The second sister answered that yes, it would be very nice to have one, but
she was embarrassed about purchasing it. “Don’t worry” the first sister
said; “I’ll handle it”. She picked up a six pack and took it to the cashier.
He was surprised, so the sister said: “This is for washing our hair.”
Without blinking an eye, the cashier reached under the counter and put a
pack of pretzel sticks on the counter with the beer, and added: “These
curlers are on me, Sister.”
