Northwest Saddlebred Association
NWSA Says Goodbye to a Founding Member
F
rom the Dust Bowl wheat fields of Dakota to the Big Timber Country of Oregon,
Willard G. Deardorff spent his 102 years pursuing various interests and projects involving timberland, rock quarries, land development, road building, lakes and ponds,
commercial properties, livestock and American Saddlebred horses.
He was a founding member of the Northwest Saddlebred Association as well as the
Clackamas Tree Farm Association. He served on the Board of the local Federal Land Bank
and the Clackamas County Fair Board where he was the President of both. He rode with the
Clackamas County Mounted Posse drill team and was famous for his enormous flock of peacocks and various exotic birds. Willard loved animals and nature and was enhancing wildlife
habitat before the age of environmentalism and was naming rocks before landscapers discovered them.
A Saddlebred enthusiast since the 1940's, his affinity for the breed started as he
cruised his tree farms in Molalla, Oregon on horseback. He acquired a mare named Lady
Whirlaway and eventually bought his first stallion, Victor Stonewall and his breeding program began under the Doubletrees Farm name (named after the two large double-trunked trees on the property that he lived on until his death).
Willard Deardorff eventually had one of the largest breeding programs in the country from the 1970's to the late 1990's.
He is responsible for breeding the

Willard was the second of
four sons born in Wildrose, North
Dakota to Avery and Charlotte Jane
Deardorff. He graduated from Wildrose High School in 1930 before
moving with his family to Silverton,
Oregon during the Great Depression.
He received a homestead grant in
the Molalla, Oregon area from President Roosevelt where cut firewood
for money and hunted deer for food.
The timbered homestead was the
beginning of his ever-growing tree
farm business, which he managed
throughout his lifetime. In 1945 he
met and married Betty Jane Van
Fleet. They lived in the Hollywood
area of Portland until moving with
their three children--Gary, Don and
Jane--to a farm in Molalla in 1951,
where Willard resided until his death.
Willard is survived by two sons and their wives, Gary and Joan Deardorff and Don and Brooke Deardorff and
son-in-law Garry Wynn. He leaves grandsons Eric (Alyssa) and
Kevin (Tricia) Deardorff, Brent (Lisa) and Darren (Bridgett) Wynn; granddaughters Julie (Dan) Gilkison and Allison
Deardorff (Marc Hevern), and nine great grandchildren--Anna Rose and Evan Deardorff, Kyle, Ryan and Lauren
Gilkison, Avery Deardorff, Cade Wynn, and Carson and Charlotte Wynn. His daughter, Jane, predeceased him in January of 2011 as did his wife, Betty in 2013.
The family will hold a private internment at Russellville Cemetery. Willard’s memorial service at the Molalla
Nazarene Church is being planned for February 24, 2015 at 1 p.m. Contributions in Willard’s name may be made to the
Willard Deardorff Memorial Fund at Grace Church in Molalla (901 N. Molalla Avenue, Molalla, OR 97038), or to The
Salvation Army.

ALLEN BOSWORTH
Allen Bosworth has been an American Saddlebred owner since 2004 and over the past decade has
owned, along with his wife Julie, many horses that their daughter has successfully shown. He has served on
the Board of the J.D. Massey Horse Show
for the past five years and is in his second
year as President of the Board. Allen is
an active member of the ASHA Charter
Club Council and he has served as Chair
of the ASHA Marketing Committee for
the past two years. He is the author of the
current
Marketing
Plan
for the
ASHA. Additionally, Allen is an associate member of the UPHA. He currently
serves as an owner, CFO and COO of
Erwin-Penland, a $100M marketing firm
with offices in New York and South Carolina that provides advertising, event marketing, public relations and strategic planning services to many major U.S. companies. He has an undergraduate degree
from UNC-Chapel Hill, a Master’s Degree
from the University of Georgia and a
high level of expertise in financial, organizational and communication skills, as
well as experience in developing innovative programs for Saddlebreds. Recently
elected to the ASHA Board of Directors,
Allen is particularly interested in continuing his work on the Marketing Committee
and the Charter Club Council, as well as
working with the ASHA Youth Committee and youth programs. His vision for
the ASHA is to drive the affinity and
awareness of the breed, while tackling the hard questions of affordability, versatility and distribution. Allen
believes that the ASHA must also take the lead in working with the USEF and other breed and discipline organizations to address negative perceptions of training methods.
MCGEE BOSWORTH
McGee Bosworth has been riding for 12 years. Her current horses are WC CH I'm Something Wicked
(Wicked), WCC CH Let's Talk (Big T or Chuffy), WCC CH Sunken Treasure (Jack), WC Moonlight Memories (Evie), Undulata's Crystal Illusionist (Eli), and Keye's Dances with Wolves (Jack-her first horse). Since
McGee has had the privilege of showing and owning some amazing horses that are all exciting and unique in
their own way, she can't pick a favorite
horse. Wicked is the horse that is just so
happy to do his job and he makes her
happy every time she sits on his back.
Big T is the powerhouse. McGee says
she has never ridden a horse with so
much power and energy and that she can
just feel it pulsing through him. Jack is
her baby, the shoulder that she can always lean on and the horse that is always there for her. When asked about her
greatest accomplishment, McGee explained it would be her last show at the
American Royal with her park horse,
WCC CH Let's Talk. She was in a twohorse workout and she won unanimously. This class meant more to her than just
a blue ribbon since it had been such a
long winding road with that horse. It
meant so much to just go in that class
and have the ride of their lives. She was really proud of that ride. McGee is also immensely proud of making
the World Cup Team and representing the United States. McGee is a senior at Christ Church Episcopal School
in Greenville, South Carolina where she participates in French Club, Outdoors Club, Yoga Club and the Photography Club, in addition to her duties as an afterschool tutor for younger children at her school. McGee’s
other varied interests include photography, working out and boxing. Her #1 priority is riding her beloved
horses and training at High Caliber Stables under the direction of Mary and Evan Orr.

The NWSA proudly sponsors beautiful purple necksashes that
are awarded to the high point Saddlebred competing in an
open competition show. All you have to do is give the name of
the Show Secretary to Anne Byers, and she will contact them
to see if they would be willing to keep track of each Saddlebred’s show results at their show and determine who the highest placing Saddlebred might be. We will mail them the necksash and simply ask that the winner be announced and have
the necksash awarded at the show. Afterwards, we would like
to know the name of the winning horse and rider and have a
picture of them wearing their necksash so that we can help celebrate their victory! What a great way to promote the NWSA
and show people the versatility of an American Saddlebred.

Tim Atwood Memorial Scholarship
How to Apply
Submit an essay on the following topic
How have Saddlebred Horses enriched your life and how will Saddlebreds affect your career goals
and enrich your life in the future. Essay must be 2-3 page, Typed, Font size: 12, Times New Roman, Double Space, APA Style.
Applicant Requirements
Applicant must be a senior in High School, currently enrolled in Secondary Education, or planning
to enroll in Secondary Education by the following year. The form of Post-Secondary Education is
the applicant’s choice. The scholarship is only valid for the following education year. Applicants
may apply as many times as they wish but may only be awarded the scholarship a maximum of 2
times.
Receiving the Scholarship
The NWSA will make the check out to the winning applicant’s choice of Post-Secondary Education
and the check will be sent directly to the institution. It is the winning applicant’s responsibility to
supply the current NWSA Youth Club Advisor with this information in a timely manner. If by the
following convention the Youth Advisor has not received this information the scholarship is invalid
and the money for the past year’s scholarship is placed back into the Tim Atwood/NWSA Memorial Scholarship fund for future distribution. Scholarship Amount: $500

Board Meeting Minutes
NWSA Board Meeting Minutes – Teleconference
Monday, November 17, 2014
Attending: Anne Byers, Jody May, Allison Deardorff, Stephanie Schoenborn, Heidi Cuddeford, Pam Christenson, Cathy Sauer and Gail Erickson.
Absent: Holly Bahr and April Richardson
Guest: Doug Cross
Anne officially started the meeting at 7:08 p.m. and welcomed Doug to the call.
Anne requested approval of minutes from the board retreat on November 8. Jody requested a slight modification to the minutes per her initial comment at retreat to
include language requesting a vote by members at convention. A brief conversation regarding past concerns took place. Comments included feeling that past schedule concerns are not as much an issue now and that the quality of ribbons is doable – some agreed that it needs to be voted on and therefore Jody’s motion to modify
the minutes from retreat to include language requesting a member vote on holding championships at Fall Classic in 2015 was accepted. Anne requested motion to
approve change, Gail approved and Cathy second the motion.
Treasurer Report – Holly was not in attendance therefore Anne reported that Sally did receive from Holly the information for our tax return. She was also provided
online access information as well.
Newsletter – Allison confirmed the newsletter was sent out just prior to this meeting. She plans to send another newsletter before convention – that issue will have a
December 15th deadline and be published in early January with focus on convention details.
Silver Circuit – Pam said she received no feedback to date with change requests. There were a few miner updates only – other than that it was “good.” Cathy shared
a positive comment from a member – “they loved the new format and felt it was more competitive.” Pam also discussed coolers for 2015 show season. Pam spoke to
Karen McConnell who will research options for us. Anne mentioned she mailed all shows the Silver Circuit approval requirements and forms. Final standings for the
2014 season will be published within days. Allison will do another email blast to get members the final copy and Anne will follow up with Holly to ensure they get
posted on our web site asap. A brief discussion surfaced again regarding need for web site posting to be more timely.
Nominating Committee – Dana, Maria and Sarah who are the 2015 NWSA Nominating Committee have 4 individuals to fill all current openings – reminder that
Allison’s position is “appointed” and will be Mel. Allison included a proxy form in the newsletter and attached it to the email blast as well. Bylaws say it must be
published 30 days before convention and we have complied with that rule. It will also need to be added to the web site along with the Silver Circuit Awards. Anne
has created ballots for convention with the option to add names if needed.
Advertising / NWSA 2015 ASHA Journal – NWSA has registered in the ASHA Journal each year. As a charter club we get a reduced rate of $100. Some brief
comments included; do we get any “bang for our buck” from the ad and suggestions that it is good PR to support ASHA and ensure our region is mentioned. Anne
asked for approval to run the ad – Heidi motioned to do the ad, Jody seconded it and all approved.
2015 Show Schedule – Anne brought up concern about Vancouver Charity Horse Show in Langley in July. She asked if NWSA wants it to be a Silver Circuit Show.
Anne has reached out with no response and mentioned they currently don’t have ASHA approval – she also said they have not asked us for Silver Circuit approval as
well. Gail felt with no ASHA approval we shouldn’t get involved. Cathy inquired on if there was interest from exhibitors and trainers to support it. Doug inquired
on if dates posted a conflict with Wilsonville – which it does not. Final board consensus is that Anne will continue to reach out to them and update board if and when
there is more to report.
“HOT OFF THE PRESS” – Anne reported that spoke to Mike Galloway at Wilsonville who confirmed that Major will do Summer Showcase in 2015 and is in the
process of seeking USEF approval. Last year Major cancelled the show. If he cancels again this year he will lose his USEF standing (rules stated if you cancel two
years in a row you lose standing). General conversation regarding the challenges we face when there are two shows on the same weekend and how it splits the members took place. At this time the NWSA show schedule will publish both shows just as was done in 2014. It was noted that no paperwork or payment has been received by Summer Showcase to date.
Awards for Silver Circuit – Anne reviews last year’s awards which included a very classy frame / award with calligraphy and hand drawn picture for 1st place
Championship By Carol Bradford. Reserve Championship award was an engraved pewter horse shoe dish purchased from the American Saddlebred Horse Museum
who gives us a discount on such items. Anne reminded us we need to order soon and that Carol in particular will need to know in order to complete the awards for
convention if we choose to repeat those. Also discussed the Stall Plates/Medallions that Pam presented at retreat as an option to consider. The board will all give
some thought to ideas and suggestions and communicate via email until our next meeting on December 2 – at which time we will vote on awards and make a final
decision.
Convention – Anne mentioned there has been overwhelming enthusiasm that our retreat has been moved back to the Embassy Suites in Bellevue. The Embassy
Suites not only reimbursed NWSA for the $1,000 cancellation fee to the Hilton at SeaTac, they also will be providing $,1,000 worth of food and 2 drink tickets per
person for up to 80 people for the Friday evening event and reducing our cork fee for the Saturday evening event. Mr. Alan Bosworth has been confirmed as our
guest speaker and will travel to convention with his wife Julie and daughter McGee who will speak at Youth Breakfast on Sunday morning. We will purchase a plane
ticket for Alan however he will pay for his family to attend. The complimentary hotel room we receive from Embassy Suites will go to Alan for the weekend. He
will arrive on Thursday night – Jody will attempt to create a flyer with “fun things to do in Seattle” for his family and any other visiting guests. Some general discussion took place regarding possible break-out sessions on Saturday however final decision pending at this time. Jody volunteers with Gail’s help to be Auction Chair.

Minutes from the last board meeting were approved as emailed. Gail motioned and Cathy seconded
Treasurer update – Holly has turned over all the books to Allison for Sally to do the taxes. It was discussed that Sally should be a second signer to
the account. It was agreed that we should present this to Sally for her opinion.
Newsletter update – Allison will be sending out an email with a list of what she will need turned into her by December 15, 2014. Anne will be
sending Allison all the convention information for this newsletter. Calendars are scheduled to be printed in time for Christmas
Silver Circuit update - All comments have been taken in and points are being finalized. Points have been emailed but haven’t been added to the
club website. The urgency and importance to keep the website updated was discussed. Winners won’t be published until after convention. Country Classic has already sent in their silver circuit application.
Nominating Committee update – Dana, Demi, Dan, Ginger and Doug are our board nominees and Mel will be the futurity appointed rep.
Amazon Smiles – Program that our members can shop on Amazon and our club will get a small percentage. We discussed the risk of hacking, but
came to an understanding that Amazons security system. The board will vote on this at our next meeting.
2015 Show schedule update – Vancouver BC charity show is applying for ASHA approval so they can get silver circuit approval.
Gail brought up that a stable membership shouldn’t have jr members. Stable memberships should be only working trainers or owners with a max of
two. We need to better define the membership guidelines as the current application has a gray area. Allison brought up that we should only have jr
and senior memberships and get rid stable and family memberships. Doug will be working towards this in the near future to better clarify.
Awards for silver circuit – Framed prints like last years Championship prizes for Highpoint. Board agreed on the Carol Bradford prints for
Highpoint in all divisions including academy. Leadline will receive a special award with their ribbon. Gail offered to donate items for the leadline
awards. Reserve Highpoint awards to be decided on at the next board meeting.
Convention Planning – Bosworths will be speaking at convention this year. They will get us their topic of discussion prior to convention. Each
board member should come up with 3 auction items from their barn. Programs are partially done from left over programs from last years event.

Meeting called to order by Anne at 7:05 p.m.
Approval of Minutes from December 2nd Board Meeting- Pam moves to approve, Cathy seconds the motion. Minutes “approved”
Treasurer Update - No official report from Holly however Anne explained that Sally is currently working to address any outstanding questions /
issues regarding the NWSA account. She thanked Allison for her assistance in following up with Holly and Sally. Sally feels confident there are
no alarming issues and plans to follow up with US Bank as well. Cathy inquired about account balance for both NWSA and Fall Classic – Anne
and others referenced Board Retreat reports that puts both in positive light. Anne asked if Sally would be an additional signer on the NWSA Bank
Account however she declined. It was suggested that the new incoming Board look closely at implementing a more consistent plan for Treasurer –
even perhaps consideration of a paid professional if needed or “in-kind” trade to an individual with the skills and time to devote to Treasurer’s
responsibilities.
Newsletter Update – Allison will send email blast and post on FB requests from members to submit asap any information, stories, photos for the
next issue which will come out in early January. The main focus of this next issue will be on Convention. Anne also requested with full support
of the Board, that this issue include a bio and tribute to Willard Deardorff. Allison also informed the Board that she will no longer be able to do
the newsletter with a formal announcement forthcoming. January will be her last issue.
Convention Packets – Anne has the materials for the packets and despite the fact that in the future these should be done 100% electronically, she
agreed to follow up the initial email blast with a hard copy to members this year. All information will also be on the website and Facebook.
Amazon Smiles – Board members were asked to review this program at last meeting and come prepared to vote on it here. Anne recapped that
NWSA would receive quarterly donations from purchases on Amazon.com – Conversation with Sally confirmed there were no major concerns
about checking account information needed to comply with the program. Jody made a motion to approve the Amazon Smiles program that will
become a fundraising tool for NWSA and Gail seconded the motion. Anne will move forward on paperwork to get our organization signed up.
Invitation from TWH Club – The Tennessee Walker Horse Club wants NWSA to join them in a show in April. Consensus of Board conversation
is that we need more information in order to discuss and make final decision. The show is held at Oregon Equestrian Center in Wilsonville. April
timing could be good for NWSA members. Anne will request more information on exact dates and ASB classes and report back at next meeting.
It was also brought up at this time that Mt. Hood was purchased and that the new owner plans to re-open as an Equestrian Facility.
Membership Restructuring – Board conversation that continued on from last meeting. Gail reported on research she had done regarding what other
clubs charge for fees and concluded that they are much higher than our fees. Gail suggested we can restructure however this should be a project
for the new Board since it will need further review and discussion. Current structure does not make sense financially and each category should be
looked at to ensure it makes sense for members, the organization at large and will improve the organization’s ability to get accurate counts on
members. Pam made a motion to have new Board review and evaluate a restructuring of membership definitions and fees. Gail seconded the motion. There was no further discussion however Cathy abstained explaining she sees conflict of interest in her role as membership outreach with
any major changes. Motion approved.
NWSA Coolers – Orders need to be placed for 2015 Show Season. Anne forwarded an email with options and Board discussed all. Pam made a
motion to stick with the same cooler as used in 2014 and Cathy seconded the motion. It was approved along with unanimous decision to use Karen
McConnell as our official vendor.
Silver Circuit – Board reviewed prize options and reached decisions on;
Lead Line – Grooming Bag and big ribbon (was noted there are 7 Lead Line kids). Grooming bag prizes will be paid for by Pam, Gail and Anne.
Academy – Anne requested final number for prizes.
Reserve Champion – After review of many options, Pam made a motion to do the beaded edge metal oval tray from www.hollandboone.com assuming the NWSA Logo and “Reserve High Point” verbiage could be engraved on the center of the tray. Gail seconded the motion– all approved.
Anne will forward to engraver for price quote asap.
Auction – Allison brought up request from Teddie Estes to donate a horse for our live auction at convention after a post was made on Facebook.
She was actually serious about the offer and would request a $4,500 reserve on the horse. NWSA would receive any money above the $4,500. If
there is no bid/taker, than there is no loss. Allison volunteered to haul the horse as well to the new buyer. The horse is a 4-year old mare. Board
agreed it was worth a shot – and showed good faith to her in hopes for continued future support of NWSA. Allison will request a short video or
photos and other information about the horse.

Meet The Board Candidates
Ginger Perry-Failor
How many years have you been involved with the American Saddlebred?
Our family has had Saddlebreds continuously for 27 years beginning with Megan, our oldest daughter’s,
riding lessons at Marywood Farm.
Describe previous and current involvement with the American Saddlebred.
Until our children left for college we were primarily horse show parents although both my husband and I
showed from time to time. Once the kids had flown the nest, we refocused on establishing a breeding program and
on occasionally showing a nice horse ourselves. We bred WC The Vega, CH Hubris and we brought along WCC
Miss Genevieve who we bought as a three year old prospect. We are currently standing a stud, Cogito (Periaptor x
Miss Genevieve), whose first foal crop is two coming three. We have several broodmares, and young horses in
training both with Eduardo Castillo at Dick Boettcher Stables and with JackieTanner at Kings Row Stables.
Have you previously served as a Board member of NWSA?
While I have not previously served on the Board, I was Futurity Secretary for 11 years. During that time,
Alan my husband, was on the Board for several years and also served as President.
If elected, what would you like to accomplish?
I am committed to improving communication between the Board and the membership and to increasing the
participation of the membership in the NWSA’s activities. In order to preserve our 501(c)3 status, we need to be
circumspect in tracking and reporting our activities and expenses. I am willing to participate in this endeavor. Our
501(c)3 non-profit purpose is educational; I would like to see the website updated to reflect current practices to be
more useful as an educational tool as well as more helpfulto members. I would also like the Board to explore opportunities to increase the venues for Saddlebreds to show in the Northwest, and to showcase them to unfamiliar audiences.

How many years have you been involved with the American Saddlebred?
It was love at first sight at the old P. I. horse show in Portland 1974. It took until 1977 to become an owner.
Describe previous and current involvement with the American Saddlebred.
I started out as horse owner and groom at Sylvia Taylor Stables. After what was a short time but seemed much longer at
the time, Sylvia retired and I anointed myself all-knowing and capable of training horses. It became apparent early,
often and still, that designation of omniscient was a little premature.
My wife, Clarissa, and I bred and showed a number of babies in the NWSA futurity. We had a lot of fun and loads of
dreams. We stood our stallion, Sultan’s Happy Day, and exhibited only our home bred “kids” at NWSA shows. Our
Happy’s Special Edition won numerous NWSA Park division HighPoint awards and was Amateur Horse of the Year. I
have shown in every division except Country Pleasure, Equitation and Hunt Seat. I continue to maintain my Amateur
card. Currently we own 4 Saddlebreds, 3 retired and 1 working daily. I also have announced horseshows from coast to
coast.
Have you previously served as a board member of the NWSA?
Yes. 2 different times. Several years as President
If elected what would you like to accomplish?
I hope to help educate the general public and other breed owners on the fun, exercise and personal accomplishment of
owning an American Saddlebred today. I wish to continue to create further value for being a member of the NWSA. In
addition I want to make sure you as a member know what the board is thinking and doing while listening to your ideas
on how to run the NWSA. On a personal note I wish to payback by my service those that have served on the Board previously and those that have given under the radar so that we have could have the fun of showing in the Northwest.
