Hello Oak Grove Community and Happy New Year!
At our last few faculty meetings we’ve been practicing our ability to teach students how to
read complex text across content areas and focusing on asking students text dependent
questions. Turns out, we are ahead of the trend! As you are reading with your child, try to
ask questions that cause them to refer to the text when forming their opinion. Here is what’s
“IN” and what’s “OUT” for 2015 regarding reading and literature:

sure to study your packets and join us for the
spelling bee meeting this week on Thursday
during your lunch/recess time. Meet in Mrs.
Evans’s room (108) for a reading of the bee rules
and an opportunity to ask questions. See you

Oak Grove Wrestling
Oak Grove Wrestling started the season with a
win against Northwood (Highland Park) 41-39.
The meet featured wins by Gavin Brown, Ian Riley,
Brandon Murphy, Danny Pucino, Chase Baczek,
and Nick Comella. The wrestling team is home
against Daniel Wright Wednesday Jan 7th @ 4pm
in the Junior High Gym.

7th Graders Give Back!
“Exceptional in character,
amount and extent” The
dictionary definition
of extraordinary was
demonstrated by our 7th
graders the day before our
holiday break. The class
began to collect food items to
make individual lunches for
the clients at PADS of Lake
County. This organization
provides emergency shelter
to those in need and the students learned this when
Stephen Love, Development Director of PADS, visited
our team. The students also collected toiletries and held
the annual Penny Wars contest between the homerooms
to raise money for the organization.
The food, toiletries
and money collected
will benefit people
here in Lake County.
The small but mighty
class had a goal of
making 100 lunches
but far exceeded that
collecting enough
food to make 400 lunches!! There were also hundreds
of personal care products, toothbrushes, soaps, and
deodorants donated by parents, dentists and local
hotels. All of these products will be used by very needy
people in Lake County.
The biggest surprise came
to PADS in the form of a
check. The students nearly
doubled last years total and
set an Oak Grove record by
collecting $1,607.62.
The teachers could not
be more proud of how the
students each handled their
responsibilities of making
sandwiches, packing
lunches, writing notes and decorating lunch bags. All of
the students displayed responsible, cooperative, caring
behavior and put others needs
before their own.
Congratulations to the 7th graders
for going above and beyond to
help others.
January 6, 2015
8th Graders Give Back!
Each night the St. Joseph’s Soup Kitchen feeds over
150 men, women, and children. Each meal costs
$100. The Oak Grove eighth grade students are
active participants in our local soup kitchen. Not only
do they help serve the people of our community, but
they have also generously donated close to $1,000 to
help defray the cost of the food. Thank you to all of
them for their very generous hearts.

No PTO meeting this week. The January PTO
meeting is NEXT Wednesday (1/14) at 9:00 am in
the Jr. High Teachers Lounge. All are welcome to
attend.

“Read With Me” Program
Oak Grove 5th
graders made
the trip to A.J.
Katzenmaier School
to hold the next
“Read With Me”
Session. Our 5th
graders worked
with the same 3rd
graders that came
to Oak Grove in
October. Together
they read parts of
a biography together (that the 5th graders chose the
day before). They filled out graphic organizers, had a
snack, and spent more time with their buddy. The 3rd
graders got to show us their school and classroom.
The A.J. Katzenmaier students were so proud of their
school! There were
happy, smiling, faces
everywhere! Our final
meeting will be back
at Oak Grove in April.
We are hoping for nice
weather so that they
can also play on our
playground equipment!
This was an enjoyable
experience for
everyone involved!
Kiss That Cow Reminder for K-4
Dear Oak Grove K-4 Parents,
Thank you for your continued support in getting your
children “Mooooootivated” to read in the Kiss That
Cow Event!
We have read over 1300 books! While this is
impressive, this pace will not get Ms. Waehner to
pucker up!
Please encourage your
child to keep reading and
don’t forget to record the
books that they have read
on the link!

PowerReading is Back!
Oak Grove School is proud to once again offer
the Power Reading course for children and adults,
ages 10 and up. Mr. Allen Goldin will teach four 2
hour sessions. The registration deadline for this
popular course is January 19th. Please check the
Virtual Backpack for more information.
Engineering for Kids
Oak Grove School is
partnering with Engineering
For Kids® Lake County to
offer after-school STEM based
programs for Oak Grove
students. Engineering For Kids
brings science, technology,
engineering, and math to children in a fun and
challenging way through after-school classes,
in-school field trips, and workshops. EFK inspire
children to build on their natural curiosity by
teaching engineering concepts through handson learning. The EFK teaching staff consists
primarily of STEM based professionals (engineers,
scientists, etc.) and certified teachers.
Currently, EFK is offering programs at several
schools and park districts throughout Lake
County and is preparing to start their program
at Oak Grove School in February. The initial
class offering will consist of three classes
including Junior Mechanical Engineering (K-2nd),
Apprentice Mechanical Engineering (3rd-5th),
and Master Engineering Challenge (6th-8th). The
Junior Mechanical Engineering class introduces
the youngest engineers to fundamental concepts
of energy, materials, and movement. During
the Apprentice Mechanical Engineering class,
students use the Engineering Design Process
to design, create, test, and improve a variety of
machines and mechanical systems. In the Master
Engineering Challenge class, students will sample
different fields of engineering including aerospace,
civil and mechanical engineering and learn how
to apply the Engineering Design Process to solve
problems. During the six-week session, students
will meet weekly after-school to tackle fun and
challenging problems. Registration is now open!

date and time stamped. If we have more requests than spots for PLUS Day
Kindergarten, we will use the date and time stamp to place students. If we
have more requests for a.m. and/or p.m. kindergarten, we will use the date/
