Certificates are a cluster of courses in a particular area. You learn practical, up-to-themoment skills and information for job improvement or advancement. Earning a certificate can make the difference between career promotion and stagnation. Why should I complete a certificate program? • Position yourself for a promotion in your current job • Make yourself more marketable for other career options • Learn practical new knowledge and skills • Network with others • Complement a formal course of academic study with practical training • Gain credentials to advance in your career Why not just take individual courses instead of a certificate program? Certificate programs can be completed in a relatively short period of time. You walk away with skills you can use immediately, gain a focused, comprehensive educational experience, and obtain proof of concentrated study. How do I enroll in a certificate program? Call our Information Center at 612-624-4000 or visit www.cce.umn.edu/ professionalcertificates; select the certificate program in which you wish to enroll and click on the “Certificate Registration” link; select the certificate enrollment listing; then follow the prompts on screen. When should I enroll in a certificate program? We recommend that you enroll in a certificate program as soon as you register for your first course. What is a certificate discount? A certificate discount allows you to pay for all courses in a certificate at one time for a discounted rate. See the certificate overview pages for details. Do I have to be enrolled in a certificate program to take one of the classes? No. Some people may decide to focus their professional development on a particular course or may not be ready to enroll in a certificate program. If you decide you want to enroll at a later date, individual courses you have completed may count toward your certificate. Do I have to purchase additional materials for any of these courses? No. We provide all the materials and books you need for class. Why should my company pay for me to attend? Although you might understand the benefits of the course that interests you, your manager may not. To be most effective in justifying attending, you need to articulate the connection between your organization and what you will learn. Here are some things to consider: • Focus on what you will specifically bring back to the organization as return for the investment • Link what you will learn to a challenge or need your organization is experiencing Want to bring our courses and instructors on site? •O ffer to prepare and deliver a short presentation and Q & A to your colleagues to share what you learned (that way others in your unit will get the benefits of your attendance, too) •B e ready with a plan that shows who will cover for you while you are attending the course •B e sure to check out the Key Information to see if you qualify for any of the discounts If I am unemployed, how do I seek funding to take your courses?
