The Edmond Quilt Guild meets on the third Tuesday of each

The mission of the
Edmond Quilt Guild is
to preserve, teach
and share the history
and art of quilting .
It is hard to believe that we are starting 2015 already, I am still trying to
figure out where and when 2014 flew by.
For those who do not know me, I am Kathryn (Kathy) Opalka your new
President, thank you for electing me. I have only been a member of the
EQG for a year, but have been quilting since in the 1960’s. My first project was a quilted pot holder made in home economics in the 7th grade,
only I did not know it was a quilt or a quilting process. I was reintroduced to quilting at the wonderful state fairs held in every state
each fall. I continue to be amazed at the wonderful and beautiful quilts
I see at fairs, meetings, quilt shops, and in books and magazines. For
me, learning new techniques is a lot of fun and I look forward to participating in the workshops we have scheduled this coming year. I love seeing how different people use their sense of color and texture in a
pattern when taking a class.
As president I will strive to fulfill the mission of EQG by helping to preserve, teach and share the history and art of quilting. I am in a learning
mode as I start to fill the shoes of the previous presidents. We are going
to have a busy 2 years with programs and workshops, outreach projects,
and the Quilt Show in 2016. Please come and introduce yourself to me,
for there are so many members I do not know at this time.
This is your quilt guild, if you have any suggestions or comments; please
contact a board member or myself at a meeting or by phone. I will be
working closely with my board members and committees to help the
guild to continue grow.

Vice-President’s Report – Sherry Bellack
Once more for the record: Happy New Year Everyone! I don’t know about you, but I am ready
to go into a quiet place and regroup after the holidays! It seems like forever since I have been able to
go into my sewing room and just meditate over all the projects in the Cue.
I am looking forward to getting back into my routine, and what a better way than to start than
with the Winter Quilt Show and the upcoming EQG Sit and Sew on the 20th. A full day of sewing with
my fellow quilters, enjoying a new mystery quilt from Lee Gray and basking in the hum of machines and
fellowship!
December was fun, fast and furious; the Christmas Party was well attended and despite our lack
of total understanding of Bingo with fabric, the prizes were awesome and the food plentiful. Our membership continues to grow and the programs just get better and better. I have so many new techniques
and ideas I will have to live to be 100 to get them all tried.
I hope you can get to the Sit and Sew on the 20th. If you don’t want to participate in the mystery quilt, you can take the instructions and try it at a later date. Maybe you want to take the opportunity to just work on another project, or just come and pet your fabric; that is all good! If the weather cooperates we will be there, I sincerely hope you will be as well.

Program Report –
Happy 2015! I have been looking forward to my two-year term as program chairman, but I have to tell you I
am greatly in awe of Judy Elliott’s work as our out-going chairman. She has left me with more organization
than I know what to do with! It has been an exciting time this fall as she has tried to teach me the ropes. I
hope you realize how fortunate our guild is to have had her input and guidance. I was surprised at the
amount of behind-the-scenes time and effort that goes into this job. She made sure that this year was well
planned and that the transition of leadership will be seamless. Thanks from the bottom of my heart, Judy.
Because of our uber-successful quilt show, your board has been able to allot more resources to speakers,
and teachers for the coming year. This is an active and progressive guild and we are working tirelessly to
offer outstanding programs and development activities for you. With that in mind, I want to encourage you
to take advantage of every guild program and workshop. Workshops are not only a time to learn new techniques but also a time to make new friends.

BROWN BAG CHALLENGE
Inside each brown bag will be a selection of coordinating fabrics. There
may be four fabrics or there may be only two. However, there should
be enough to make a quilt top, sized approximately 45 x 60 inches - basically crib-sized. You will need to use the fabrics in your bag to make
the top and then finish the quilt …. even if the fabrics would be something you would not normally choose to sew with. That's the challenge part of this!!
You may add additional fabrics as you want; however, each fabric represented in your bag
MUST have a recognizable amount used in the top … backings and bindings do not count. (Of
note, some bags may have enough fabrics for a backing, but that fabric must also appear in the
top.)
The finished quilts will be judged by the membership at the April 2015 guild meeting, with prizes
awarded for the favorites. All finished quilts will be donated to Loving Touch, who will forward
them along to our community agencies in need.

The 2014 raffle quilt, “Passing Fancy,” designed by Kim Diehl and won by EQG member Anita Hyman at our quilt show last July, has been entered in the NQA 2015 Quilt
Show to be held in Little Rock, Arkansas June 18-20, 2015. The quilt show is going to
have a “Chapter Row” that will display quilts made by groups within NQA chartered
guilds, of which we are one. In the case of Passing Fancy, it was masterminded by
the Piecers of the Past (Bonnie Bowman, Judy Elliott, Nancy Forrest, Lee Gray, and
Wendy Wells, who also did the exquisite quilting. Members of the guild foundation
pieced the bear paw blocks that had been drafted by Bonnie and then the POTP put it
together and did the appliqué. Prior to it being won by Anita, the guild had the quilt
appraised and it was autographed on the label by Kim Diehl (this probably further increases its value so Anita, take note!). Upon inquiry, Anita graciously offered to let
us enter it in the quilt show, so long as she gets it back. It would look especially nice
if it was returned with a ribbon attached!
So if you plan to go to this quilt show (and it is close by, so maybe you should), be
sure to look for the EQG entry!

MYSTERY QUILT SUPPLY LIST
This easy two color Mystery Quilt is actually made up of only one Mystery Block.
You do as many blocks as you wish to determine the final size of your quilt.
I made a 45" x 56" quilt with only 20 blocks (4 x 5). It is a nice size throw and only
takes 1 1/2 yards of light color fabric and 1 1/2 yards of contrasting medium to dark fabric.
Supplies you will need are:
fabric (as noted in the "PRE CUT instructions" below)
Sewing machine plus all things associated.... needles, scissors, extension cords, etc
neutral thread or thread that matches your fabrics
straight pins
rulers ... 2 1/2" x 18" or 6" x 24"
rotary cutter
cutting mat at least 14" X 14"
iron and ironing surface
PRE CUT instructions:
for a 45" x 56" quilt please cut:
cut 20 - - - -10" x 10" squares - - - light color fabric
cut 20 - - - -10" x 10" squares - - - contrasting medium or dark fabric
The finished block measures about 11.25"; you can calculate additional quilt sizes from
there, knowing that 1 1/2 yards of each fabric yields 20 blocks.
