As we approach the end of 2014, my thoughts turn to some of the highlights of another successful
year of serving the community.
First and foremost is the passage of Issue 3, our Library levy, which
will provide us with a stable base of local funding for the future. This is
especially important as state funding continues to decline. Ohio Libraries,
under the guidance of the Ohio Library Council, have begun the
“Restore the PLF Campaign” to convince legislators to return state
funding to previous levels. The Public Library Fund, formerly 2.22% of
the General Revenue Fund, has been cut by $105 million dollars since
2008 – a loss of 24%. State aid to libraries is now at 1996 levels despite
the increase in costs that libraries have incurred since then in necessities
such as materials, utilities, building upkeep and staff salaries and benefits. In 1996, gasoline was
$1.11, bread was $1.62 and a postage stamp was $.32. Unfortunately, increased costs today affect your
public libraries but we haven’t raised our prices. Borrowing from your library is still completely free!
Did you know that LIBRARIES ARE THE MOST POPULAR PUBLIC SERVICE IN OHIO? Surprised?
Consider that there are around 1.8 million school students in Ohio, but more than 8.9 million public
library cardholders. That’s more that ¾ of the State’s population who take advantage of the services
that public libraries have to offer.
You will see this campaign build during the year and we will need your help in advocating with our
legislators to Restore the PLF to 2.22% of the General Revenue Fund.
Thanks again for your support of our operating levy. Because of it, we have already been able to
expand hours at our North, South and Keystone branches. Please stay tuned to find out what you
can do to support our efforts to Restore the PLF.
You can also help your library by becoming a Friend of the Library. EPLS has two Friends groups –
the Friends of Elyria Public Library, and the Friends of the Keystone-LaGrange Community Library.
Our Friends groups are the fundraising arm of the Library and each has signature events annually.
The Elyria Friends held their 11th Annual BIG book sale in October and it was a great success. The
Keystone-LaGrange Friends had their annual Author’s Brunch, Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre, and
Book Sale. Both Friends fundraising efforts are vital to the Library’s programming, especially our
Summer Reading Programs for kids, teens and adults. Additionally, they help underwrite our annual
Staff Training Day, special projects such as the Teen Department renovation at our West River Branch,
and lots of things that aren’t in our normal budget. It’s great to have Friends. For information on how
to become a Friend of the Library, pick up a membership form the next time you stop in at one of
our five locations.
Finally, on behalf of the library board, staff and community, I wish to extend our gratitude to Library
Board members, Dr. William McFadden and Thomas Bowen, who will leave the board at the end of
this year. Each has reached his term limit after twelve years of service. Their dedication and commitment
to the Library and our community will be sorely missed. Now welcome new board members Debbie
Kroupa of LaGrange and Ray Armstrong Jr. of Elyria. Debbie was the library’s Keystone community
chair for our 2014 levy campaign and is a past president of the Friends of the Keystone LaGrange
Community Library. She is the Assistant Director of Programs for Girl Scouts of Northeast Ohio. Ray
is the Area Director for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Lorain County. Each will serve a four year term.
I would like to extend my best wishes for happy holidays and a wonderful new year.
Sincerely,
Lyn Crouse

library news
Make this your #1
Resolution for 2015
Just so you know…
Jen Harmon & Meghan Harr,
Youth Services Librarians,
in collaboration with Elyria
Schools’ Eastern Heights,
Northwood and Westwood,
are providing a 6th Grade Book
Club during one study hall
a month. Since October, the
librarians have met with two
groups of students at each
school.
Why? The objectives are
what you would expect—to
develop a love for literacy and
to develop critical thinking; to
instill positive habits in reading
such as reading for pleasure;
to increase and/or maintain
students’ reading proficiency
throughout the school year;
to share different perspectives
of the same book; and on the
library’s side, to foster a positive
relationship with our local
students and schools.
But why was that again? Oh
yeah, to read some of the most
awesome books that are out
there today for young adults
and to share the experience
with your friends. Oh, the
librarians are kind of cool and it
gets us out of study hall.
That’s why.
One more thing. The Friends
of the Elyria Public Library
System also thought it was an
awesome idea for 6th graders
to have this Book Club. So they
donated the money to purchase
eight sets of ten books that will
rotate between the clubs and
the schools.
Yeah, Friends, thanks!
Ask a 6th grader you know if
they are participating.

and then just imagine th
possibilities!
• Sign your kids up for that very special “Three for Me” library card of their own and make more time to read for the
whole family! Read a book by an author you’ve never read
before. Introduce your children to non-fiction books about
sports, space, and science. We all have our favorite genres,
but sometimes it’s fun to go out on a literary limb.
• Learn to maximize your new e-media devices. Our staff
can show you how to utilize Overdrive, Zinio, and
hoopla—all for free with your library card!
• Attend a family program together, just check the program
listings to make great memories!
• Make realistic goals for better health and wellness this
year. Check out our collection of books and magazines
pertaining to health and wellness. Current issues are
available for browsing at the library; all back issues can be
checked out and enjoyed for three weeks, or download your
favorite magazines of all kinds forever with Zinio—just ask
a librarian to show you how. Knowledge is powerful. Here’s
to wellness!
• Learn a new hobby. Library shelves are treasure troves
of ideas and inspiration for arts and crafts of all kinds. In
addition, we have a knitting group, Crafting on a Budget,
and other programs that can get your creative juices rolling!
Simply check out our program listings.
• Hone your do-it-yourself skills. Tasks around the house
really can be simple if you do the homework first. Check out
a book or use yet another electronic database available to
you with your library card. Choose from the Auto Repair
Reference Center or the Home Improvement Reference
Center.
• Read and learn digitally. As a cardholder, you have access
to some great digital audio and digital e-book choices. Go
to the online card catalog at http://elyria.bibliocommons.
com/ and choose your home library. Once you are there
(the online card catalog), click on “emedia” and e-books can
be downloaded to e-readers at no charge.
• Attend a computer class. Sharpen your skills or learn
about new software!
• Enjoy free WiFi at each branch library.
• Take advantage of Clevnet—Elyria Public Library System is
part of a consortium of nearly 50 northeast Ohio libraries
that share library materials. Available to you at no cost.
• Imagine the possibilities brought to you by your
Elyria Public Library System!

2015 Summer Reading Program
Every Hero Has A Story!
Yes, it’s January, but just the thought of planning for the 2015 Summer Reading Program is keeping our librarians toasty warm!
This year’s theme is Every Hero Has a Story & we say “Let’s read them all!” Planning is underway in all departments to explore and expand reading skills for all our audiences. We’re all about imagining the possibilities for programs and events that will teach, inform and delight kids, tweens,
teens, families & just about everyone else.
To add to the fun, and to create a sense of challenge that will keep us
all reading, we’ll be offering incentives, contest prizes, reading clubs, camps,
art projects and crafts, celebrity appearances and definitely super heroes!
So as we shiver this winter, think warm, happy thoughts about spending your summer
at your favorite branch of the Elyria Public Library System.
